I have had this theory about emotions in MLP for a long time and I'm so glad to see others explore it. Though I see it more as the emotions becoming the parasite instead of being used by one.
Well, I have mentioned long ago the exact same theory that Nightmare Moon was actually the Shadow of Pony infecting Luna from Sombra, I believe also in a Sawtooth's video. I even planned to write a story about it, but never got to.

To be fair, it is explained in the Ponyville Mysteries book that Nightmare Moon was created by the Helm of Shadows, which is her helmet. This helmet was manifested by Luna’s negative emotions as well as the negative emotions of other ponies drawn in whenever Luna was in the dream realm. It is also known that the Helm can be possessed by others and the magic will be enhanced by those negative emotions
The fact Tia said "and you will never exist *again*" has often been theorized to imply that Daybreaker has existed before, but personally I don't put much stock in it. The parasite theory is an interesting angle, though it's based on the comics which are dubiously canon; I would consider them a tertiary source at best
The parasite theory + this make sense. The parasite may have took the form of Daybreaker and invaded Celestia’s dreams after she banished Luna, like an inner demon. It would taunt Celestia and try to corrupt her.
That’s why in that episode Celestia clearly shows signs of being traumatized when seeing Daybreaker, and couldn’t stand up against her without Luna’s help.
I don't think Daybreaker has existed, but Luna knew Daybreaker's name without being told it, implying that Celestia has dreamt about the possibility before.
Why would 'Tia and Starlight dream about the same theoretical superpowered evil form tho? It only makes sense if Starlight has read or heard about it somewhere and her subconscious is manifesting a memory of that tale
There was a segment in the Diary of the 2 sisters where it was said Celestia turned into fire against a dragon when she got mad, maybe that was Daybreaker?

Jealousy and the longing for acceptance is the root cause for nightmare forms. That's been the pattern for every single pony who's had it. Stygian wanted acceptance and attention from the pillars. Luna wanted attention and love from her subjects. Sci-twi wanted acceptance in the Friendship game EQ series or whatever. Juniper from the Starlight EQ episode wanted acceptance in the theater. Sombra and Daybreaker don't have any backstories that are canon, but it's possible to assume the same. That's just my theory. :)
What about Gloriosa Daisy? Also, In SciTwi's case it was mostly the other students who were jealous of her, and treated her badly because of that, and because they were super competitive. So she wanted to leave to an independent study program and just do Science by herself. Her nightmare for is an extreme version of that, one whose "independent study program" consists of ripping the fabric of reality apart to learn more about it.
Chrysalis feels almost a bit too opposite of Cadence. She may not be Cadence's evil counterpart but maybe her reflection. Like maybe once Cadence was born, Chrissy was too? Kinda like your theory about Discord and the Spirit of Harmony. That's another reason why I love evil sides to characters, they're not only fun but just have so many possibilities.

for a good story that delves into the question of "How could our Celestia become daybreaker" i would definitely recommend 'I, Daybreaker' by Rune Soldier!
Back when Stygian and Pony of Shadows was first revealed, I had a theory that maybe Pony of Shadows was the "core" of the Nightmare. When Stygian along with Pillars got banished into the void, part of the Shadow remained and found another host, Luna. Growing inside her slowly, and since it was just small portion of the Shadow, it had no form of it's own, simply transforming Luna into Nightmare Moon.
Fun fact, in my fan fiction, The Pony of Shadows was actually a normal pony that was possessed by a nightmare force. Literally the exact same thing they came up with here. Complete coincidence since my story was written back in April of 2022😅. The nightmare force was a creation of Grogar btw, since the pony it infected (Ranthi), later the Pony of Shadows existed back during the time of Tambelon, and that’s how his body withered away, before finding Stygian as its new host. I also gave the Pony of Shadows a redemption arc😉.
what if the Nightmare force become physical or a twisted dream force, light/darkness have no mortality so if your positive emotion get out of control it cause your like negative emotion fog up your realizing. someone could have good intention but do terrible things because can't tell what's right and wrong?

I have a huge theory that the corruption has already happened to another Alicorn: Flurry Heart. Nightmare's design and Luna's design are really close to one another, so Opaline's and Flurry Heart's being relatively close to one another too makes me believe that our little baby filly has grown up and gotten corrupted.
Maybe Opaline used to be a former student of Twilight Sparkle, until THAT darkness found her and corrupted her to betray Twilight and steal all of the magic in Equestria. But, you're right, Sawtooth. Sunny Starscout could also be corrupted by that darkness as well, all because of Opaline.
I have a theory about alicorns thanks to opaline from g5. The way she wants power. Makes me think what if alicorns from before celestia and luna were all power hungry which lead to them fighting over power. Which lead to all of them going extinct.
Its something to mention that also when Twilight faced her 'biggest fear' against sombra in the 'beginning of the end' celestia turned into daybreaker in her fears. Daybreaker seems to roam around in dreams and fears, perhaps waiting to come out.
Regarding emotions being magical in Equestria, consider the Kirin / Nirik situation as well. Never get them mad lol. Also there is an old brony animation called the fall of the crystal empire, which shows that Sombra and Luna both know about the nightmare thing, and he predicted it would engulf her eventually. It did infect him as well. But even he was confused as to what Luna really had become.
This was very interesting. Also, I sort of forgot that other dimensions could have slightly different, or entirely different kinds of magic than others. Awesome video to be the first one in so long and I look forward to future theories and even remixes/possible original songs.
Dude. I’m trying to write a script for an Earthbound-style RPG but for MLP, and I’ve been trying to find how Luna actually turned into NM beyond the “she was jealous of Celestia” and stuffs in the canon and this video couldn’t be more well-timed :D
@Sawtooth Waves im not sure how I'd imagine what that could look like, maybe having a more demonic like look or maybe just darker colors and some spiky bits. Gives me the urge to look for fanfictions like that. Your video gave me inspiration for a story~ keep up the great work!

I’ve always wondered about this for so long, I always kind of veiwed what Luna and co. went through as like “Akumatization” from miraculous ladybug, (it feeds on negative emotions and gives them a more powerful form) and after watching this, this theory makes it make so much more sense and perfectly explains my theory/veiw, in a way that fits into the lore of this show!
I personally would recommend the story “I Daybreaker” it’s a pre cannon fanfic that implies that Daybreaker always exists in Celestia’s mind but she keeps her in line

Are magical abilities and weight connected? Allow me to explain.
Let's say star swirl tried to lift an apple tree. And an ordinary Pony tried to lift an apple tree.
Since star swirl is more magically talented, would he find lifting the tree easier? Or do magic and weight have no relation and both unicorns would struggle the same amount despite magical differences?
Does age have anything to do with it? We already know that young unicorns struggle to lift heavy things with their magic because they haven't used it much before. (Ex: When sweetie bell is struggling to lift the broom with her magic, and spike picks it up with ease. <Twilight Time>)
A weird simplification of my personal theory is that when there’s to much build up of a negative emotion, a pony can turn into something similar to Nightmare Moon or King Sombra
It’s an interesting thought to say the least… The idea that it’s a parasite that corrupts a pony who displays a strong form of negative emotion explains some points… And the idea that this Nightmare form dates further back before Luna is even more interesting… Theory that’s probably far fetched would be one of my own : The Nightmare Parasite comes from a Nightmaric Spawn of the past… Meaning that somewhere, there’s probably a Nightmaric Spwan creating more Nightmare Parasites to take control of other Alicorns, Unicorns, Pegasy and Earth Ponies as well as other creatures like Griffins, Yaks and Changelings… Would love to see more theories like this Sawtooth… 10/10 theory…
Man, i felt like something was missing for the past three months and i know what it was. I personally think this theory's spot on and there might be instances in show that suggests the presence of the natural counterpart of this "nightmare force". If we look across all nine season, the nightmare force's parasite isn't the only magical entity that feeds on emotions and feelings to get stronger: I think the spirit of Harmony is its direct opposite. Both of them manifest with a form that closely matches the last entity that utilized their powers (for the spirit of harmony it was Sparkly Sparkle), both of them get stronger with emotion (As shown by the name six using the power of harmony with or without the elements), both of them can work as independent entities, both of them need to be linked to someone to unleash their full potential and both of them can cause transformations (think about the rainbow power forms). The only real difference is the approach: while the nightmare force acts more like a parasite with negative emotions, like sawtooth said, the spirit of harmony seems to create a symbiotic relationship between itself and whoever uses its power using their positive emotions. For all we know, every type of specialized magic could have a force of its own. Do you think this might be it?
Another thing to back up this theory: I might be remembering this wrong, but in the Nightmare Rarity comics, creatures on the moon included Luna, turning her into Nightmare Moon by fueling her insecurities, and did the same with Rarity. They might have been the source of the parasite?

A pony Midnight Sparkle would be so interesting to see. I want to read the comic I presume in which Celestia and Luna are pupils of the Pony of Shadows. To add to this theory, the Journal of the Two Sisters does seem to have a Daybreaker moment when Celestia gets angry. It does contradict the canon world, but it does show another world where Daybreaker is real.
An interesting theory ! Though, I may have an idea on how sombra got infected... In a previous video, when you talked about sombra being an ex-alicorn, you had brought the idea of starswirl being the one to send him away, but what if he wasn't alone? The pillars existance was hidden by him (funnily enough, one reason which can be imagined for it would be stygian's protection, since he is the weaker member and would probably get targeted as their founder AND strategist) so it wouldn't be so surprising that the tale wouldn't be known (explaining why we only learn about sombra's link with the cristal empire). And if the shadow force is a parasitic force, it would be logical that there is an incubation period. So here is what I imagine may have happened :
The pillars hear tales of voices and a possible dangerous creature rooming around the hollow shades, a forest near the foal montain and the famous ponhenge. Deciding to get a look there for a possible monster (and studying ponhenge), they begin travelling. After a fair time of walking, in the forest and not seeing any trace of anything worthwhile, they stop by a well to get some water before continuing the journey. While his most powerful comrade check out for possible timborwolves or other creatures of the wood, Stygian is making camp and unknowingly get contamined by the water.
Time passes while the group lives more adventures until they hear of the coup against the alicorn sisters. Rushing back, they find themselves having a difficult time against the newly alicorned, Stygian proposes, since they are having trouble fighting him with his newfound power, to take that power away from him as happened to the famous grogar. The plan is executed and works, but, what they don't realize when they send Sombra far from equestria, expecting him to never be able to return with his original unicorn abilities, is that while he lost a considerable amount of power, he got a new one growing within each day that passes... Just as one is growing inside their tactician.
Finally, the call of the shadow for more power become to strong to Stygian. And he decide to try a crazy plan as they are close to Ponhenge once again, cloning his friends artifacts. After all, Starswirl always talks about wanting to do experiments on them and not daring of fear to damage them. And Stygian knows the perfect spell ! Usually used to clone far less powerful artifact like magical scrolls, yes, but even when it is stopped or fails, it doesn't damage the original. And while he needs more power, Ponhenge is known for assuring a nice magical boost at this season. He knows he should talk to them about it, but would they really not listen to him if they catch him? And talking to them would take time, between parties for saving towns, recovering for battles and training, would he manage to find a time to talk BEFORE the season passes? And how grateful would they be when they see the result if they don't expect anything.
But nothing goes as planned, when they catch him, they don't listen to his plea and he find himself running away. Before realizing it, his hooves brings him to the same well he drank from so long ago. But, something strange happens, he feels like... attracted to it. A voice comes from the well.
Stygian should have known to never listen to mysterious voice but it listened to him when even his so-called friends didn't so... Wouldn't it be impolite to not do so?
(There is like, a lot of thing I could add about this, but I kinda went "story-mode" for a minute and don't want this comment to be even longer x'DDD I also kinda have an idea about what the well of shades is and when/where it comes from... But I already talked to much I feel x'DD)
I actually disagree with the idea that there's a parasite involved at all (in the show at least; there is one in the comics but those tend to contradict canon so I'm not completely incorporating them as a source).
One of my major reasons is that Sunset Shimmer, Sci-Twi, and Gloriosa Daisy were all corrupted by magic without there being any indication that any sort of Nightmare Force entered the human world. Beyond that though, I think the show's given us enough information about the phenomenon that shows a parasite wouldn't even be needed for the transformation to occur.
We already know that magic is channeled by the caster's emotions and intentions (hence the whole "friendship is magic" premise), and Starlight's bottle experiment proved that emotions have magical capabilities that can overpower ponies' normal thinking. Therefore, it's pretty easy to imagine a scenario where powerful emotions enhance powerful magic, which is strong enough to double back and strengthen those aforementioned emotions, creating a feedback loop that makes someone incredibly powerful, but so consumed by whatever feelings caused the situation that they do things they'd never be okay with otherwise. (Think of it like when speakers are loud enough that the sounds picked up by the microphone; the same sound goes into the microphone and out the speakers over and over again until it becomes a loud hum that drowns out everything else).
Think about the earlier-mentioned events, as well as Luna's. All of them had a very similar set of circumstances; someone had strong negative emotions and intentions (e.g. Gloriosa being determined to save Camp Everfree no matter the risks), then they activated powerful magic (e.g. Sunset putting on the Element of Magic, Luna raising the moon over the sun), then they transformed into a caricature of the aforementioned emotions and goals (e.g. Sci-Twi's desire to take magic for knowledge's sake it becoming greed for magic in general).
It seems to me that their powerful emotions became powerful magic, which amplified those emotions, which transformed them into their villainous counterparts. No third party required.
For the evil forms, its cool that they dont become the opposite of themselves, they become a more extreme and unbalanced -The loving warmth of the sun becomes a scathing heat of destruction -The cool watchful comfort of the moon becomes a nightmare
As for the other 2, twilight would likely become magic obsessed like midnight sparkle. Cadence though, the extreme unbalanced form of love is lust, so i think its obv why no evil form of cadence have ever been canonized lol
I have a crazy theory as well, that maybe the sirens are part of the Nightmare force--Idk if it's just the species but I was re-watching the Rainbow Rocks movie and the sirens had similar features to what the Nightmare Force seems to have. When the sirens transform into their equestrian-human form, they gain the same red eyes commonly associated with the Nightmare Force. On top of that, they also feed off the emotions of others and use them for energy to make themselves stronger. While they don't retain the sharp teeth feature as a human, they do in their fully equestrian form. The only thing they don't have in at least one of their forms is the ability to turn into a shadow.
Sorry for the long paragraph that could be wrong- Idk just a theory
I’m wondering if the thing that would make Celestia snap is exactly what we saw in that same episode. We see how much stress she goes through and the frustration to maintain a perfect image, what if one day she got fed up with that perfect image and snapped, creating Daybreaker. Her emotions overwhelm her, dark thoughts are all that run through her mind, anger, frustration, rage, it all clouds together and she just wants to watch the world burn. Emotions can be spread as well, so she could affect other people’s moods as well, just like what happened with Starlight.
I suspected the Shadow Stygian found was an Element of Disharmony as it had similar properties to the Alicorn Amulet, Juniper's Mirror, and the Inspiration Manifestation spell tome (such as the magic bonding to the host in such a way that only the host could separate themselves from it, the user becoming more corrupted by the magic as time went on, etc...) If the Shadow was also a nightmare force, that would suggest the other Elements/artifacts might have been as well. Perhaps they were all created by the same entity, or maybe even the magic that powers them are nightmares forces. That's not too hard to imagine, actually -- a malevolent creature's consciousness trapped inside a magical artifact that calls out and latches on to anyone who gets close.
This also raises what twilights possible nightmare form would be! And what about the human realm? We know transformations are possible, so could there have been a "nightmare" enemy sunset and the others had to face?
gosh i wish we could've canonically gotten more lore on luna's transformation; i feel like mlp awakened my love for "dark sides" lmao
also, how cool would it be if we'd gotten some sort of gen 4 special where all 3 alicorns get corrupted?? considering all-alicorn-magic twilight could stand up to tirek with ALL of equestria's magic in him, that would've been some cool stakes to explore 👀
If I remember correctly when Twilight faced her greatest fear against Sombra. She saw Luna turn into Nightmare Moon and Celestia into Daybreaker

I had a theory a while ago about Sombra, here's how it goes: notice the shape of his horn and mistmane's, both very similar. Then look how they booth have the flowy manes, similar. I theorized that Mistmane and Sombra were siblings but then Sombra then came corrupt in the same way Luna did, that way it also works with your theory. basically, msitmane is well loved among ponies, but sombra becomes jealous. His emotions then take him over and becomes what he is today.
5:05 Or since Luna is an Alicorn, maybe she had more strength / willpower to resist the parasite from fully taking over, and turning her into similar form as Pony of Shadows ?
To be honest I'm with the nameless one on this it's possible that the other two could've been possessed by the nightmare force and some outcomes were worse while others were good
This would actually explain why cozy glow wanted to use friendship as a source of power. If negative emotions like jealousy,rage have power, then positive emotions probably do too. Although I still don’t understand why she wanted to take all the magic into another realm (and why the artifacts from the 6 Creatures can even open a portal to another realm)
I haven’t been watching the G5 series but to keep up with the lore I read the wikia, and there’s more Alicorn lore thanks to Opaline claiming she’s a Fire Alicorn. Did Alicorns have elemental associations? Twilight Sparkle and Celestia also have an association with fire to some extent, being linked to the stars and the sun respectively. Luna, Cadence, and Flurry Heart seem more to be associated with cold, like the moon, the crystal heart, and the snow of the Crystal Empire’s geographical location. Is there something more to this? Hot and Cold being part of Alicorn physiology and magical association?
I noticed when looking through some already cannon and or made 'Nightmare versions' including Midnight Sparkle, evil sunset shimmer, Sombra, and Daybreaker/Nightmare moon it really got me thinking... Is Queen Chrysalis one? And if a changeling somehow got the parasite would they be able to control the shapeshifting aspects of their changeling power since the parasite can feed and grow power? it would make sense that it would constantly be changing... Or maybe it is just a normal unreformed changeling...
I like the Opaline is connected in part to the Nightmare Force theory, especially as she's like a leech to Misty.

Unicorn/Alicorn magic may work like that or maybe it works in a very similar way as Jedi Force works. As in if the magical pony is balanced maybe they will maintain their normal form or if they start leaning towards the "dark side" of magic then if their appearance doesn't change (like how Nightmare Moon, Daybreaker or Sombra did) then at the very least their personality and how their magic works may change (like how stygian did when he became the pony of shadows or how Trixie did when she wore the alicorn amulet).
Starlight Glimmer, however is what's called an "exception" because she seemed like she was born with a magic talent that is very similar to Discords (as in to be able to manipulate everything with their own free will just like how an Arcanist can).
Since Sci-Twi became Midnight Sparkle, it also proves The Nightmare Force can also possess humans, meaning they've found their way through the portal(s) to the human world and, since Sci-Twi became possessed by one, I wouldn't be surprised if a number of The Nightmare Force are/were hanging around Crystal Prep.
During Cinch's reign of the school there would've been ample negative energy around there for them to feed off of
Nightmare Moon, Day Breaker, Nightmare Sparkle, Sombra have always been a loose thread of curiosity and wonder. So many Fanfictions have spawned as a result, and their are a few connections between all of them. Emotions are definitely part of the process, that is the one constant. But the NATURE of their transformations are all different, which makes people wonder. Plus if "Friendship is Magic", it makes sense that Emotions would be magical or at least have power of some kind. Hmmmm, maybe thats why the Changelings need emotions to feed on.
But hay, NYX (everyone's favorite reincarnated reformed Nightmare) exists as a result of this curiosity, so something positive came out of all of it.
I feel like we've seen something similar if not the same in equestria girls, Sunset said to Midnight Sparkle that evil magic was controlling her and then pulled her out like Princess Twilight did with the pony of shadows in the later seasons.
This was a really great theory but it still makes me wonder why the “nightmare force” wants to turn ponies into “nightmare creatures”. This is just a theory but what if the “nightmare force” isn’t a just a magical parasite. What if it was a monster that was created by Grogar. Maybe he could have purposely created an “immortal” parasitic shadow monster without a body to make it harder to be destroyed or be detected while still being strong enough to possess ponies through their negative emotions and create more “monsters” to wreck havoc on Equestria.
An idea of evil Cadence that I have would be called Heartbreaker, but then the Elvis song 'Heartbreak Hotel' pops into my head and turns Cadence into a blues singer.

Something to add is that rainbow of light and rainbow of darkness both also respond to emotion, what of the rainbow of darkness is just a dead parasite that was so much negativity that it stayed in ponyland and the rainbow of light is just a purified version that got to much positive energy that it overloaded. Especially since MLP n'friends and MLP FIM are parallel to each other (heck what if there is a universe where Megan, Danny, or any of the ponies got possessed by that parasite.).
If there had never been a Daybreaker before, how did Luna know Daybreaker's name without anyone mentioning it. I don't recall the exact wording, but Luna references "again" when talking about Daybreaker.

Well, considering in the comics Rarity got posessed by the nightmare forces and turned into Nightmare Rarity, Cadence having a nightmare form isnt out of the question. Perhaps it just didn't find enough vulnerability in her to transform her into Nightmare Cadence/Heartbreaker, and decided to go after Rarity instead due to the nightmare forces remembering how she and the others vanquished Nightmare Moon all those years ago. Midnight Sparkle was just SciTwi corrupted by otherworldly, equestrian magic, similar to Sunset Satan. I highly doubt she was infected by the same forces that got Luna. Sombra too wasnt effected by the Nightmare forces, he is an umbrum who was corrupted by his own kinds power(i think.. If im wrong on this point, please correct me.) as he grew up under the guise of a unicorn foal in the crystal empire. Though I'll give credit, i do like the whole parasite theory. It isnt entirely debunked either, seeing how the nightmare forces in the comics preyed on Rarity and got her to transform into Nightmare Rarity.
It's understandable that anypony or creature could be controlled by the "parasite" but what if it's not one It could just be a strong emotion that controls them to the point they just turn or in stigein's case the emotion surrounds him like a puppet in some way I'm not totally sure and glad you're back love your theories
Oh, I actually have an entire story (kind of) about an evil Cadance! If you don't mind reading a stranger on the internet ramble, then, do take a listen. I have the entire story in a bit more detail on my DeviantArt, Hate-Love12, but this is a summary.
So, Alicorns. Celestia and Luna proves that they have a pretty long lifespan, and that brings into question- Shining Armor, who isn't an Alicorn (oh, and twilight's friends, but thats a different topic.) So it starts with Cadance offering Alicornhood to Shining Armor, but he refused as he didn't want to live longer than his parents. This turned into a problem when the time came for him to pass away. Cadance locked herself away to mourn in her room or something, causing Flurry Heart to take on the responsibilities in her place. What was weeks turned to months and everyone got concerned. Cadance in her grief went to scower the library for anything that could reverse death- even the forbidden sections. even consolations from family and friends weren't doing anything. finally though, she found it. dark magic is something she forbade herself to use, but her grief threw that rule out the window. she tried the spell, which the dark magic from the spell transformed her body into the nightmare form, and a shadow of shining armor appeared- but only for a few seconds before vanishing. the spell failed. as a last resort, she remembered king sombra and the (dubiously canon) tale of him and radiant hope, and brought him back. meanwhile, flurry heart noticed the crystal heart behaving strangely, being a bit faded in color and spinning slower than usual and it showed her a vision of cadance bringing back king sombra. she panicked, obviously, and sent a letter to twilight for help before confronting cadance herself. back with cadance, king sombra was hella confused when he was brought back, but seeing that cadance was now evil and full of dark magic, he put two and two together and realised that he can totally use her to his advantage. but then twilight and flurry heart came in and twilight told flurry to go rescue the crystal ponies while they fought. twilight used a handy-dandy spell she learned from luna- a spell to trap them in the dream world. ever since then, flurry was the new ruler of the crystal empire, and cadance's nightmare form became known as Arrhythmia.
and thats the end of the ramble! i don't have as much content of her as i would like, but y'know, it is what it is. thanks for reading if you did-
why do i just have the feeling nightmare cadance would be called heartbreaker and would drain ponies of their happiness and love and would leave equestria in complete anarchy
Hmm. I kinda got an idea about how magic can be good or evil. And how it might link to Pre G4, G4, then up to G5.
Emotions can link to how magic reacts. If there’s strong negative emotions, the magic can become bad and unstable. But if the pony were to calm down and be positive, the magic becomes stable. Think of this as this way.
The sirens only feed off negative emotions, which is linked to how magic works.
The windigos feed off strong negative emotions from the ponies, which makes the winter storms to become more powerful.
When the pillars disappeared, the Shadow pony exist because of the negative emotions that its host had.
Luna became Nightmare Moon due to negative emotions from thinking that ponies can’t enjoy the night.
Daybreaker could exist in the show if Celestia were to have strong negative emotions. If not, then Daybreaker can’t exist.
Opaline could be an Alicorn that became evil due to strong negative emotions, resulting in her becoming evil.
Plus when the G5 cast had glowing cutie marks, it was due to postive emotions.
I like this theory on emotions it kinda reminds me of sonic and the secrets rings this is kinda spoilers but at the climax sonic absorbs the world rings of hatred sadness and rage thus giving him a darkspine form which kinda reminds me of these nightmare forms but for sonic it just boosts his power and makes him a bit more snarky and aggressive you could correlate it to the werehog a bit aswell
One thing I'd like to say is, a good video! I really liked it! But I wanted to voice a few opinions I had while watching it. I'll be making timestamps through this on the things I agree with and disagree with. Though, a lot of it is just me expressing my confusion, lol.
For starters at 2:47, this may be a bit nitpicky. Still, I'm a bit unsure as to how the scene wherein Starlight begins to bottle up her emotions is an example of a separate entity taking advantage of a pony's feelings to gain power. Unless the example being raised had more to do with the ponies Starlight's emotions were taking control of? If the latter is the case, feel free to ignore this part of the comment entirely. Wow, we're already off to a great start with this, huh?
Anyway, at 4:08 King Sombra is used as an example of a corrupted pony, I may be wrong, but I believe that Sawtooth's original universe is the original My Little Pony universe, and in the original universe, Sombra's origins were never stated.
I suppose my confusion stems from this. Sombra's origins were never stated in the original universe, but neither was the Nightmare Force ever stated to exist in the OG MLP universe, so how can they correlate with one another?
Especially since, in the universe where The Night Forces and Sombra DO co-exist(The comics), Sombra is simply an Umbrum. And I know that Nameless touches on that fact somewhat, but I'm still unsure as to how Sombra could potentially be affiliated with the Nightmare Forces in any way. Unless Sawtooth's universe is entirely independent of the OG universe that most are familiar with, which if that's the case...

Next, at 4:51 The Pony of Shadows is mentioned and is regarded as a parasite, but I disagree with this.
Stygian himself admits that he freely gave into the Pony of Shadows:
"Welcome to the Well Of Shade, when you turned your backs on me, I discovered this place, The Darkness spoke to me of a power beyond any I could imagine, and I listened... The Shadow and I became one..." - A direct quote from Stygian/Pony of Shadows Pony Of Shadows Quote (Here's a link to the quote if anyone's curious)
The above seems to imply that Stygian was called to by the darkness, it offers him power, he accepts, and then he goes on the fulfill his vengeance. Something he did out of his own free will.
I think that it's likely that Stygian was being influenced by The Pony of Shadows but full-on controlled. I don't think there's enough evidence to really determine that, especially when taking into consideration Stygian's own words. Though I suppose that maybe the Pony of Shadows could have been pretending to be Stygian.
To wrap this part up, I suppose I disagree largely with describing The Pony of Shadows as a parasite. For it seems less like a parasite, and more like a symbiote of sorts. You bond with it, allow it to feed off of your negative emotions, and in return, you gain power, a new body, and a fresh pair of wings. It seems fair all things considered.
I also disagree with calling what happened to Stygian a "Possession" because that would imply that the Pony of Shadows forcefully controlled Stygian when it didn't. He's still seemingly in control of his own actions.
Which raises some interesting moral questions when you think about it. If Stygian really WAS in control, shouldn't the Pony of Shadows ALSO be given a free shake at redemption and not just Stygian?
Sure, it gave him power, but Stygian was the one that used it at the end of the day. For justice to truly be served, shouldn't BOTH of them be punished and or rehabilitated?
Anyway, time for some finished thoughts.
Personally, I was always of the mind that forms like Nightmare Moon, or Daybreaker, didn't come about because of the Nightmare Forces, but because of too many Negative emotions.
Like, look at what happened to Sci-Twi, too much magic, plus her fear, and her obsession with magic, which ended up creating Midnight Sparkle. No Nightmare Forces are needed. Even Sunset falls prey to this, Negative emotions, plus an overflow of magical energy lead to her becoming a She-demon, and still no Nightmare Forces insight.
Like, we know at large that emotions in general can change a pony's physical body, just look at Sunset's aura color from when she was still a bully, to her aura color when she reformed. From a cold cyan to a warm red. A positive emotional change can literally change ponies into a higher form of themselves, so why can't negative emotions do the same? I don't think The Nightmare Forces would be required for this whatsoever, just a pony/creature/whatever drawing on too much of one particular form of energy/emotions.
Also, at this point I'm rambling so you can ignore pretty much all of this since I already got finished commenting on the video but- I never really thought of forms like Nightmare Moon or Daybreaker as "Evil" They aren't. Not really. They're just versions of ponies that have taken in too much of certain emotions.
Like I said before if positive emotions can change you, why not negative emotions? If positive emotions like friendship, or kindness, can change you into an alicorn, why not negative emotions as well?
I'm repeating myself at this point. But to end it off, I think it's more worthwhile to think of forms like Nightmare Moon or Daybreaker, or Midnight Sparkle as less "Evil" And more Negative. The negative version of the true self.
The negative version of Twilight Sparkle is Midnight Sparkle, just like how her positive version might be the alicorn version of herself or just her regular self.
And there is a big difference between something being negative, and something being Evil. describing something as evil implies that in itself, the thing you are describing is malicious or somehow taboo, or even bad.
Negative emotions aren't and should not be considered something bad. They're something to embrace at the times when you need them, and something to recognize and let go of in other situations.
Like, anger is a big negative emotion, anger can hurt a lot of people. But sometimes we need anger to push us to be the best versions of ourselves. Sometimes being angry can help you stand up to a bully, and sometimes being angry can help you overthrow a tyrannical system or government.
I guess what I'm saying is, that it's when you embrace the negative emotions and really work to really understand them, that things improve, but understanding doesn't mean throwing them away entirely, you can still feel angry at a situation, without letting it consume you.
You can still feel and be empowered by negative emotions, without hurting yourself or other people around you. Because at the end of the day, just like positive emotions, negative emotions have their place in who we are. We wouldn't be here without our likes and dislikes, without are positives and negatives. One isn't better without the other, really they complement each other.
Well anyways, that's enough. I apologize for any grammatical errors, it's pretty late into the night, so I'm a little tired. I didn't mean to write so much, but it did so what can you do?

Three instances of magical corruption in Equestria Girls. (Twilight, Sunset and Gloriosa) Of these, they all had a catalyst of high magical energy that corrupted them. Even when that energy was technically harmonic (Twilight's element crown, magic syphoned from the EG mane 6, the EG power crystal things) it could still be harnessed and cause corruption.
well the tie-in comics did have an arc where Rarity was possessed by the Nightmare force, so it's totally possible that the nightmare parasite can affect non alicorn beings.
You've got about the same amount of evidence as a conspiracy theorist, but that's what i enjoy about this channel. It makes an interesting headcanon though i dont think it's likely. I would doubt everything from a multiversal standpoint because it's not for certain that the fundamental rules of magic are the same, even if they function the same way.
The pony of shadows could also be another species of the corrupting parasite. I mean we have HOW many kinds of mosquitos? It makes sense for multiple kinds of the parasite species that are related
What if Chysallis and Cadence were sisters, one the romantic love(Cyissilis) and friend ship love(Cadence). Crysillis fell in love with Sombra (when he was just an unicorn) but when the shadow force corrupted him, it broke her heart, so she go a Change in her. After her sister disappeared Cadence had both love powers on her hands, I think this is why she joined Celestia, to find some-pine to take one of the “love powers” off her hoofs. I think this is why she met Twilight and why she babysat her, to make sure that when she was older, she could take on one of the love responsibility’s
my take on this is that: Anyone can get infected by the darkness, EVEN ANIMALS (possibly) can get it... tho im not sure about it.. and the darkness could be transported into diffrent universes or dimentions maybe?

Maybe any creature can be corrupted when they have enough magical power. Taking "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" literally. Add that to living forever, and I can't imagine it'd be easy on them. Watching so many lives come in and out of existence while you stay the same

I think a good name for Nightmare Cadance would be Blackstorm Heart. Also, if the parasite were to have infected Stygian to transform him/trap him in the pony of shadows, wouldn't it make sense for it to have been banished to limbo as well?
My name for evil Cadance is "Opal Lust". I'm not fully attached to it, I just wanted to break away from putting the words "Nightmare", "Breaker" and "Heart".
I think powerful magic is a requirement before it can corrupt. Not just anypony could be a target. We've seen it form from alicorns and one very talented unicorn (if the part of sombra being one is true). So i don't think the nightmare force would be interested in ponies that couldn't provide it with sufficient power. So all alicorns are vulnerable. Starlight, starswirl, and sunset are probably vulnerable. Maybe some pegasi that seem especially tuned to their pegasus magic like rainbow and lightning dust? Earth ponies are least likely to be vulnerable, but if anypony has enough earth pony magic it's rockhoof. For non ponies it's hard to say if any are more or less magical than other members of their species, so specific examples would be hard to come up with.
in twilights nightmare with Sombra day breaker shows back up. I'll edit this as I go (edit one) the sirens are a living proof that someone can use your emotions for power there voices feed of it causing more crupting there will and causing more emotional response and then more power (another edit) stigien mentioned that when the pillers turned away the shadows spoke meaning the shadow was definitely a pony at a point and what if it was a pegasus and using stigiens magic gained the horn it shaped around his horn and the wings sprouted on there own
I wonder what a Corrupted Cadences name would be? Nightmares are a bad aspect of a nighttime phenomena Daybreaker just sounds aggressive Maybe an evil cadence would have "Lust" somewhere in their name because of how less genuine that emotion for the basis of a full loving relationship. "LustStruck" or something like that.
While the comics are canon unless they contradict the show (or the show contradicts them), the formation of Sombra has two different iterations. The first we get to see is Mirror Sombra, in the Reflections saga, who exists as a benevolent monarch because of corruption of our Sombra. He became corrupted because of the dark magic of the Mirror Royal Sisters clashing. When Sombra comes back in Siege of the Crystal Empire, Sombra was revealed to have been corrupted by a similar force to the Nightmare Force known as the Umbrums, and in the comics canon, Sombra and his childhood girlfriend managed to overcome the Umbrums and finally free him. And don't even get me started on Nightmare Rarity.

I'm not sure if you count this as canon But in the official MLP comics, it reveals that Sombra is an Umbra pony, not even a unicorn. He was given that form to trick the pony settlement nearby(the crystal empire) so he could one day release the other Umbrums to take/destroy Equestria Again I'm not sure if you count the comics as canon but I do find the concept of the Umbrums to be very interesting
There's also a comic were Chrysalis talks about her past and we did get to see a time in those comics where the changelings didn't have the holes on their limbs and horns I believe

@Sawtooth Waves Can you explain to me why Twillight from the Human-World does only have wings when she "Pony-Up" and doesn't when she is in Equestria? Twillight from Equestria and Rainbow Dash from Human-World on the other hand have wings in both worlds.
the Question would be: What is the opposite of Love? Jealousy or lust? If first, she would become something like the Sirens, only worse. If the Second... she would become a Succubus, feeding of others lutsful emotions and souls, instead of giving them Love. ... okay, the last thing sounds... you know. xD In both forms, she would be even in her destructive power than NM, DB and MS...
And for non Alicorns that could become Possessed by darkness, think of the time, twilight gone full rage mode (Rapidash Mode) or the power, the dark Alicorn Amulet have in it... or the black book Rarity found. Someone had to made them in the past... and each have the possibility to awake the dark side in a pony and make them vulnerable to dark magical Parasites.
The parasite could have been created from a very long ancestral pony to punish themself. Just like Luna after nightmare moon. However it seems more powerful than what Luna created. It's as if it's a being of immortal power. Think flutterbat. She was consumed by the bats ability to feed off apples. Same could be for the parasite to feed off jealousy. And her bat tooth still there.. like u said in the video, a power charge.

Upon assumption that your theory is accurate( Which personally I Think is more probable than anything else) then It would make the most sense for for someone to have gotten infected During Episodes 1 and 2 Season 1 but not be A suitable host. After all when dealing with an infectious Parasite If you don't destroy the remains of The afflicted body then it is still possible to be affected by the parasite even if Said parasite affected pony remains are undestroyed and I'm pretty sure no pony got rid of the shell that was left over from nightmare moon so maybe someone else could have gotten affected next but who?
omg omg omg omg... the rift lore has gotten an update... this video has sooooo many inplercatons... so many! and I can't even talk about all of them... 2:24 has some very interesting inplercatons. not just for the cannon mlp, but the rift cafe, and the fandom as a whole. as one's emotions and magic going hand-in-hand, or should I say hoof-in-hoof could mean big things for many stories.
and it has some very interesting inplercatons on one story in particular... an amulet that takes hate and turns it into magic is completely possible, and we could have seen a nightmare moon like a story with said amulet happen in the mlp fandom. the reviewer part of the fandom in particular at least... as there once was a story... once... there once was a story that had an amulet with said inplercatons, but now 5-6 years later is all most forgotten. I found this video very interesting but had no one to tell this to. so I write it here, there is no need for anyone to give this the time of day. I just what to put a thought out there.

Now to think of all the other side of thier magic, when Sunset has put the crown/the element of Twilight maybe this the same power that changed Luna and all that magic changed their way to see the world and the fact that Sunset and Princess Twilight are similar but back then Sunset was alone and the 5 other elements were in equestria so this is why Sunset was tranformed in to a Demon because the elements were separeted and Sunser was alone
Question about sombra, I got the knowledge from the mlp game that he's half umbram, so my question is, is he really half umbram or is it just the mirror sombra lore?

We could had discuss 999 things in G5 that isn't answered. Who is Opaline, who are Misty's parents? How magic changed to include flora magic, what did Opaline meant by saying "Fire Alicorn"? etc..... but we discuss irrelevant G4 things about Celestia's dream evilsona from one episode.
Maybe the Pony of shadows originally posessed that unknown alicorn in the Love Story, i don't really remember how the Love Story went but Something with a Love Portion and that might have caused those Strong Feelings, knowing an alicorn lives longer than a normal Pony maybe the unknown alicorns Lover Passed and the grief Got them corrupted and when they died the parracite keept the alicorn Form, maybe thats the Secret identity of that unknown alicorn

The pony of shadows would have to have been an alicorn. But from his voice we assume his a boy. What if that was the first male Alicorn and after that happened No other males were trusted with- MIND BLOWN! ALICORNS ARE ALWAYS FEMALES AND THEY ALWAYS RULE!!!
We saw daybreaker in season 9 in fear of twilight by Sombra in episode 1 so it makes sense that celetia had changed into daybreaker otherwise in that fear celetia never changed in that
What if opaline is cozy glow? Pink to red, with light hair and CURLS? Cozy glow tried to steal the magic before, but she tried to get rid of it. She could’ve tried again, or changed up her plans. Anyways, now that the magic is back she could be trying to steal it.
Plus opaline is struggling to make friends/keep friends with misty, and we’ve seen evidence of Cozy being her true self when she’s been somebody’s friend for a bit. So opaline could’ve been all sweet on Misty in the beginning, and then revealed herself on some level later on. Making Misty feel like she’s indebted to her.🤷🏽♀️
At the very least, if twilight pulled a ‘cozy glow’ and sucked all of the magic out of Equestria, including creatures and artifacts/stones then we could be certain that the statue cozy glow was petrified in is no longer a statue and so the three creatures that were imprisoned there were also set free, though ‘powerless’ without magic.
(That’s leave the question on where are the other two?probably dead idk)
Btw, I found a theory on the interner that old mlp world is fluded in g5 and new g5 locations are near Canterlot and a bit wester (pegasi living on the top of the mountain where Canterlot was (Claudsdale has fallen there), earth ponies in ponyvile and unicorns on unicorn range). That also explains the technological difference, better technologies in place nearest to Canterlot, capital, average technologies near ponyvile and unadvanced in unicorn village (they basicaly had to build the city from scratch unlike others). What do you think?

What if....Opaline is actually flurry consumed by some sort of nightmare force? I mean she pretty much looks like a dark coloured flurry, but the mane is white instead of pink. Could be a side effect of the corruption. And yeah maybe there came a sort of 'epidemic' of alicorn corruption which Twilight and Cadence succumbed to it, and Tia and luna were able to stop flurry from dying, but couldn't free her from the corruption?
Since it's that parasite that transformed Luna to Nightmare Moon, is it possible that that is the same parasite that corrupted Sunset Shimmer and Scitwi

Well, you are forgetting one changeling, chrysalis. She has sharp teeth, slitted pupils, and her and sombra both lick their chops when around an item or being that could possess powerful positive emotions to drain from, like the crystal heart, or shining armor. So who's to say that chrysalis wasn't a victim to this corruption, and we've seen a good form of her in other worlds, so what if after she was corrupted, she produced unreformed changelings that also carried the corruption withing their dna and magic, then when a changeling reforms, the corruption becomes purified and disappears, leaving a more kind and positive creature. Like with your chrysalis reforming video, maybe she'd need help to be reformed through removing the nightmare parasite from her system so she can be her former self.
Geez, sounds hard to be a pony. You can't even be upset without the risk of being taken over by a demon parasite. No wonder Twilight wants everyone to be 'happy friends' because it's so dangerous for anyone to be anything other than that.
Sawtooth: Luna fought Sombra not long before her transformation into Nightmare Moon, what if she originally got the parasit from him, the timing is just uncanny Wow, you literally just explained the plot of "The Fall of the Crystal Empire" fan animation that was made over 8 years ago. hello hello sawtooth, i stumbled across your channel i absolutely love it and was surprised your a changeling, albeit a reformed one i absolutely love changelings and chrysalis (d'know how to spell it correctly) but i am also a changeling albeit not reformed BUT i keep trying to get away..did not bode well d'know what im doing wrong...i want to be reformed. but besides that i absolutely love your chanel and videos i have wached them all and am eagerly awaiting a new one take care of yourself :)
In my school vr game goalius had that like of nightmare force after ryuko maktoi had made her choice ( countless members of the principality of zeon where killed and including some well remembered aces like char asnible arnimo gato and kacilia zobie all killed in action by nightmare goalius )
Isn't it weird that Celestia framed the Crystal Empire thing as a test for Twilight? What if she only did that as an excuse to keep Luna from going there to face King Sombra?
I doubt rage would do it for Crysalis. In our universe all known corruption is from jealousy. As Crysalis lacks anything Cadence wants, she has none of Shining’s actual love and I doubt Cadence ever wanted Changeling powers or a Changeling army. Sombra likely was a powerful unicorn, given his traps and gift for mental manipulation likely an illusionist. If this Nightmare force did take on an alicorn previously (and from the look of Stigyin a MALE alicorn) could that be the reason why Celestia and Luna might have been the last natural born alicorns until Flurry Heart? @Reese I kinda wish they did. You know, I came up idea of Sunset dealing with her past physically. It would happen by having an other villain from Equestria coming to the human realm, he/she is like Discord, they can create illusion that becomes a reality. There's forth, they create an evil clone of Sunset, resembling her as she was in the 1st movie and they send her friends back to the 1600's, where anyone with magical powers was considered a witch, leaving sunset alone fighting her evil doppelganger, with two transformation (our Sunset in her current transformation vs evil doppelganger Sunset in a she demon form).
Another idea I had with Sunset dealing with her past is in the dream realm. Where they fight off with this other villain, who cast a sleeping spell on and smashing her geo gem, causing the others to turn gray. While the other girl try to fight off this evil for without their powers, we see inside Sunset Shimmer's mind and see her fighting off 3 variation of herself aka her three transformations from the 1st, 3rd, and 4st movie.
1st Fight "Sunset vs her transformation from Legend of Everfree" 2nd Fight "Sunset vs her transformation from The Friendship Games" 3rd Fight "Sunset vs her She Demon self from the first movie"
And when it seems like it over for her, she soon finds out that it was actually a test, to see if Sunset it willing to fight not just for herself but also her friends, than her friendship is stronger than any magic, and they give her a piece of her broken geo, and say "Good Luck Element of Friendship". After she wakes up and sees her geo fixed and looking different, she finds out her friends are endangered and heads of the save them. Once there she gets a new transformation including wings that also turn in fire for extra speed. And after they defeat the villain, and there magic is restore they soon find out that Sunset finally became an alicorn.

The Tantabus was made from Luna's guilt after she came back and was saved. She made it to give her the same nightmare over and over again to punish her for what she did as Nightmare Moon. Since she's accepted that everypony has forgiven her, the Tantabus has vanished.

This helmet was manifested by Luna’s negative emotions as well as the negative emotions of other ponies drawn in whenever Luna was in the dream realm. It is also known that the Helm can be possessed by others and the magic will be enhanced by those negative emotions

The parasite theory + this make sense. The parasite may have took the form of Daybreaker and invaded Celestia’s dreams after she banished Luna, like an inner demon. It would taunt Celestia and try to corrupt her.

0 likesJealousy and the longing for acceptance is the root cause for nightmare forms. That's been the pattern for every single pony who's had it. Stygian wanted acceptance and attention from the pillars. Luna wanted attention and love from her subjects. Sci-twi wanted acceptance in the Friendship game EQ series or whatever. Juniper from the Starlight EQ episode wanted acceptance in the theater. Sombra and Daybreaker don't have any backstories that are canon, but it's possible to assume the same. That's just my theory. :)

What about Gloriosa Daisy? Also, In SciTwi's case it was mostly the other students who were jealous of her, and treated her badly because of that, and because they were super competitive. So she wanted to leave to an independent study program and just do Science by herself. Her nightmare for is an extreme version of that, one whose "independent study program" consists of ripping the fabric of reality apart to learn more about it.

14 likesBack when Stygian and Pony of Shadows was first revealed, I had a theory that maybe Pony of Shadows was the "core" of the Nightmare. When Stygian along with Pillars got banished into the void, part of the Shadow remained and found another host, Luna. Growing inside her slowly, and since it was just small portion of the Shadow, it had no form of it's own, simply transforming Luna into Nightmare Moon.

36 likesFun fact, in my fan fiction, The Pony of Shadows was actually a normal pony that was possessed by a nightmare force. Literally the exact same thing they came up with here. Complete coincidence since my story was written back in April of 2022😅. The nightmare force was a creation of Grogar btw, since the pony it infected (Ranthi), later the Pony of Shadows existed back during the time of Tambelon, and that’s how his body withered away, before finding Stygian as its new host. I also gave the Pony of Shadows a redemption arc😉.

I have a huge theory that the corruption has already happened to another Alicorn: Flurry Heart. Nightmare's design and Luna's design are really close to one another, so Opaline's and Flurry Heart's being relatively close to one another too makes me believe that our little baby filly has grown up and gotten corrupted.

7 likesI have a theory about alicorns thanks to opaline from g5. The way she wants power. Makes me think what if alicorns from before celestia and luna were all power hungry which lead to them fighting over power. Which lead to all of them going extinct.
13 likesIts something to mention that also when Twilight faced her 'biggest fear' against sombra in the 'beginning of the end' celestia turned into daybreaker in her fears. Daybreaker seems to roam around in dreams and fears, perhaps waiting to come out.

Also there is an old brony animation called the fall of the crystal empire, which shows that Sombra and Luna both know about the nightmare thing, and he predicted it would engulf her eventually. It did infect him as well. But even he was confused as to what Luna really had become.

Since star swirl is more magically talented, would he find lifting the tree easier?
Or do magic and weight have no relation and both unicorns would struggle the same amount despite magical differences?
Does age have anything to do with it?
We already know that young unicorns struggle to lift heavy things with their magic because they haven't used it much before. (Ex: When sweetie bell is struggling to lift the broom with her magic, and spike picks it up with ease. <Twilight Time>)

I had made an evil version of Cadence before season 8 was released called Rageance. I was very proud of the name!
1 likeMan, i felt like something was missing for the past three months and i know what it was. I personally think this theory's spot on and there might be instances in show that suggests the presence of the natural counterpart of this "nightmare force". If we look across all nine season, the nightmare force's parasite isn't the only magical entity that feeds on emotions and feelings to get stronger: I think the spirit of Harmony is its direct opposite. Both of them manifest with a form that closely matches the last entity that utilized their powers (for the spirit of harmony it was Sparkly Sparkle), both of them get stronger with emotion (As shown by the name six using the power of harmony with or without the elements), both of them can work as independent entities, both of them need to be linked to someone to unleash their full potential and both of them can cause transformations (think about the rainbow power forms). The only real difference is the approach: while the nightmare force acts more like a parasite with negative emotions, like sawtooth said, the spirit of harmony seems to create a symbiotic relationship between itself and whoever uses its power using their positive emotions. For all we know, every type of specialized magic could have a force of its own. Do you think this might be it?

0 likesTo add to this theory, the Journal of the Two Sisters does seem to have a Daybreaker moment when Celestia gets angry. It does contradict the canon world, but it does show another world where Daybreaker is real.
0 likesAn interesting theory ! Though, I may have an idea on how sombra got infected... In a previous video, when you talked about sombra being an ex-alicorn, you had brought the idea of starswirl being the one to send him away, but what if he wasn't alone? The pillars existance was hidden by him (funnily enough, one reason which can be imagined for it would be stygian's protection, since he is the weaker member and would probably get targeted as their founder AND strategist) so it wouldn't be so surprising that the tale wouldn't be known (explaining why we only learn about sombra's link with the cristal empire). And if the shadow force is a parasitic force, it would be logical that there is an incubation period. So here is what I imagine may have happened :
0 likesThe pillars hear tales of voices and a possible dangerous creature rooming around the hollow shades, a forest near the foal montain and the famous ponhenge. Deciding to get a look there for a possible monster (and studying ponhenge), they begin travelling. After a fair time of walking, in the forest and not seeing any trace of anything worthwhile, they stop by a well to get some water before continuing the journey. While his most powerful comrade check out for possible timborwolves or other creatures of the wood, Stygian is making camp and unknowingly get contamined by the water.
Time passes while the group lives more adventures until they hear of the coup against the alicorn sisters. Rushing back, they find themselves having a difficult time against the newly alicorned, Stygian proposes, since they are having trouble fighting him with his newfound power, to take that power away from him as happened to the famous grogar. The plan is executed and works, but, what they don't realize when they send Sombra far from equestria, expecting him to never be able to return with his original unicorn abilities, is that while he lost a considerable amount of power, he got a new one growing within each day that passes...
Just as one is growing inside their tactician.
Finally, the call of the shadow for more power become to strong to Stygian. And he decide to try a crazy plan as they are close to Ponhenge once again, cloning his friends artifacts. After all, Starswirl always talks about wanting to do experiments on them and not daring of fear to damage them. And Stygian knows the perfect spell ! Usually used to clone far less powerful artifact like magical scrolls, yes, but even when it is stopped or fails, it doesn't damage the original. And while he needs more power, Ponhenge is known for assuring a nice magical boost at this season. He knows he should talk to them about it, but would they really not listen to him if they catch him? And talking to them would take time, between parties for saving towns, recovering for battles and training, would he manage to find a time to talk BEFORE the season passes? And how grateful would they be when they see the result if they don't expect anything.
But nothing goes as planned, when they catch him, they don't listen to his plea and he find himself running away. Before realizing it, his hooves brings him to the same well he drank from so long ago. But, something strange happens, he feels like... attracted to it. A voice comes from the well.
Stygian should have known to never listen to mysterious voice but it listened to him when even his so-called friends didn't so... Wouldn't it be impolite to not do so?
(There is like, a lot of thing I could add about this, but I kinda went "story-mode" for a minute and don't want this comment to be even longer x'DDD I also kinda have an idea about what the well of shades is and when/where it comes from... But I already talked to much I feel x'DD)
I actually disagree with the idea that there's a parasite involved at all (in the show at least; there is one in the comics but those tend to contradict canon so I'm not completely incorporating them as a source).
2 likesOne of my major reasons is that Sunset Shimmer, Sci-Twi, and Gloriosa Daisy were all corrupted by magic without there being any indication that any sort of Nightmare Force entered the human world. Beyond that though, I think the show's given us enough information about the phenomenon that shows a parasite wouldn't even be needed for the transformation to occur.
We already know that magic is channeled by the caster's emotions and intentions (hence the whole "friendship is magic" premise), and Starlight's bottle experiment proved that emotions have magical capabilities that can overpower ponies' normal thinking. Therefore, it's pretty easy to imagine a scenario where powerful emotions enhance powerful magic, which is strong enough to double back and strengthen those aforementioned emotions, creating a feedback loop that makes someone incredibly powerful, but so consumed by whatever feelings caused the situation that they do things they'd never be okay with otherwise. (Think of it like when speakers are loud enough that the sounds picked up by the microphone; the same sound goes into the microphone and out the speakers over and over again until it becomes a loud hum that drowns out everything else).
Think about the earlier-mentioned events, as well as Luna's. All of them had a very similar set of circumstances; someone had strong negative emotions and intentions (e.g. Gloriosa being determined to save Camp Everfree no matter the risks), then they activated powerful magic (e.g. Sunset putting on the Element of Magic, Luna raising the moon over the sun), then they transformed into a caricature of the aforementioned emotions and goals (e.g. Sci-Twi's desire to take magic for knowledge's sake it becoming greed for magic in general).
It seems to me that their powerful emotions became powerful magic, which amplified those emotions, which transformed them into their villainous counterparts. No third party required.

I have a crazy theory as well, that maybe the sirens are part of the Nightmare force--Idk if it's just the species but I was re-watching the Rainbow Rocks movie and the sirens had similar features to what the Nightmare Force seems to have. When the sirens transform into their equestrian-human form, they gain the same red eyes commonly associated with the Nightmare Force. On top of that, they also feed off the emotions of others and use them for energy to make themselves stronger. While they don't retain the sharp teeth feature as a human, they do in their fully equestrian form. The only thing they don't have in at least one of their forms is the ability to turn into a shadow.

I’m wondering if the thing that would make Celestia snap is exactly what we saw in that same episode. We see how much stress she goes through and the frustration to maintain a perfect image, what if one day she got fed up with that perfect image and snapped, creating Daybreaker. Her emotions overwhelm her, dark thoughts are all that run through her mind, anger, frustration, rage, it all clouds together and she just wants to watch the world burn. Emotions can be spread as well, so she could affect other people’s moods as well, just like what happened with Starlight.

0 likesI suspected the Shadow Stygian found was an Element of Disharmony as it had similar properties to the Alicorn Amulet, Juniper's Mirror, and the Inspiration Manifestation spell tome (such as the magic bonding to the host in such a way that only the host could separate themselves from it, the user becoming more corrupted by the magic as time went on, etc...)
1 likeIf the Shadow was also a nightmare force, that would suggest the other Elements/artifacts might have been as well. Perhaps they were all created by the same entity, or maybe even the magic that powers them are nightmares forces. That's not too hard to imagine, actually -- a malevolent creature's consciousness trapped inside a magical artifact that calls out and latches on to anyone who gets close.

0 likesI had a theory a while ago about Sombra, here's how it goes: notice the shape of his horn and mistmane's, both very similar. Then look how they booth have the flowy manes, similar. I theorized that Mistmane and Sombra were siblings but then Sombra then came corrupt in the same way Luna did, that way it also works with your theory. basically, msitmane is well loved among ponies, but sombra becomes jealous. His emotions then take him over and becomes what he is today.

I haven’t been watching the G5 series but to keep up with the lore I read the wikia, and there’s more Alicorn lore thanks to Opaline claiming she’s a Fire Alicorn. Did Alicorns have elemental associations? Twilight Sparkle and Celestia also have an association with fire to some extent, being linked to the stars and the sun respectively. Luna, Cadence, and Flurry Heart seem more to be associated with cold, like the moon, the crystal heart, and the snow of the Crystal Empire’s geographical location. Is there something more to this? Hot and Cold being part of Alicorn physiology and magical association?

0 likesUnicorn/Alicorn magic may work like that or maybe it works in a very similar way as Jedi Force works. As in if the magical pony is balanced maybe they will maintain their normal form or if they start leaning towards the "dark side" of magic then if their appearance doesn't change (like how Nightmare Moon, Daybreaker or Sombra did) then at the very least their personality and how their magic works may change (like how stygian did when he became the pony of shadows or how Trixie did when she wore the alicorn amulet).

So many Fanfictions have spawned as a result, and their are a few connections between all of them. Emotions are definitely part of the process, that is the one constant. But the NATURE of their transformations are all different, which makes people wonder. Plus if "Friendship is Magic", it makes sense that Emotions would be magical or at least have power of some kind. Hmmmm, maybe thats why the Changelings need emotions to feed on.
But hay, NYX (everyone's favorite reincarnated reformed Nightmare) exists as a result of this curiosity, so something positive came out of all of it.

This was a really great theory but it still makes me wonder why the “nightmare force” wants to turn ponies into “nightmare creatures”. This is just a theory but what if the “nightmare force” isn’t a just a magical parasite. What if it was a monster that was created by Grogar. Maybe he could have purposely created an “immortal” parasitic shadow monster without a body to make it harder to be destroyed or be detected while still being strong enough to possess ponies through their negative emotions and create more “monsters” to wreck havoc on Equestria.

0 likesWell, considering in the comics Rarity got posessed by the nightmare forces and turned into Nightmare Rarity, Cadence having a nightmare form isnt out of the question. Perhaps it just didn't find enough vulnerability in her to transform her into Nightmare Cadence/Heartbreaker, and decided to go after Rarity instead due to the nightmare forces remembering how she and the others vanquished Nightmare Moon all those years ago. Midnight Sparkle was just SciTwi corrupted by otherworldly, equestrian magic, similar to Sunset Satan. I highly doubt she was infected by the same forces that got Luna. Sombra too wasnt effected by the Nightmare forces, he is an umbrum who was corrupted by his own kinds power(i think.. If im wrong on this point, please correct me.) as he grew up under the guise of a unicorn foal in the crystal empire. Though I'll give credit, i do like the whole parasite theory. It isnt entirely debunked either, seeing how the nightmare forces in the comics preyed on Rarity and got her to transform into Nightmare Rarity.

0 likesOh, I actually have an entire story (kind of) about an evil Cadance! If you don't mind reading a stranger on the internet ramble, then, do take a listen. I have the entire story in a bit more detail on my DeviantArt, Hate-Love12, but this is a summary.
0 likesSo, Alicorns. Celestia and Luna proves that they have a pretty long lifespan, and that brings into question- Shining Armor, who isn't an Alicorn (oh, and twilight's friends, but thats a different topic.) So it starts with Cadance offering Alicornhood to Shining Armor, but he refused as he didn't want to live longer than his parents. This turned into a problem when the time came for him to pass away. Cadance locked herself away to mourn in her room or something, causing Flurry Heart to take on the responsibilities in her place. What was weeks turned to months and everyone got concerned. Cadance in her grief went to scower the library for anything that could reverse death- even the forbidden sections. even consolations from family and friends weren't doing anything. finally though, she found it. dark magic is something she forbade herself to use, but her grief threw that rule out the window. she tried the spell, which the dark magic from the spell transformed her body into the nightmare form, and a shadow of shining armor appeared- but only for a few seconds before vanishing. the spell failed. as a last resort, she remembered king sombra and the (dubiously canon) tale of him and radiant hope, and brought him back. meanwhile, flurry heart noticed the crystal heart behaving strangely, being a bit faded in color and spinning slower than usual and it showed her a vision of cadance bringing back king sombra. she panicked, obviously, and sent a letter to twilight for help before confronting cadance herself. back with cadance, king sombra was hella confused when he was brought back, but seeing that cadance was now evil and full of dark magic, he put two and two together and realised that he can totally use her to his advantage. but then twilight and flurry heart came in and twilight told flurry to go rescue the crystal ponies while they fought. twilight used a handy-dandy spell she learned from luna- a spell to trap them in the dream world. ever since then, flurry was the new ruler of the crystal empire, and cadance's nightmare form became known as Arrhythmia.
and thats the end of the ramble! i don't have as much content of her as i would like, but y'know, it is what it is. thanks for reading if you did-

0 likesEmotions can link to how magic reacts. If there’s strong negative emotions, the magic can become bad and unstable. But if the pony were to calm down and be positive, the magic becomes stable. Think of this as this way.
The sirens only feed off negative emotions, which is linked to how magic works.
The windigos feed off strong negative emotions from the ponies, which makes the winter storms to become more powerful.
When the pillars disappeared, the Shadow pony exist because of the negative emotions that its host had.
Luna became Nightmare Moon due to negative emotions from thinking that ponies can’t enjoy the night.
Daybreaker could exist in the show if Celestia were to have strong negative emotions. If not, then Daybreaker can’t exist.
Opaline could be an Alicorn that became evil due to strong negative emotions, resulting in her becoming evil.
Plus when the G5 cast had glowing cutie marks, it was due to postive emotions.
I like this theory on emotions it kinda reminds me of sonic and the secrets rings this is kinda spoilers but at the climax sonic absorbs the world rings of hatred sadness and rage thus giving him a darkspine form which kinda reminds me of these nightmare forms but for sonic it just boosts his power and makes him a bit more snarky and aggressive you could correlate it to the werehog a bit aswell

Still, I'm a bit unsure as to how the scene wherein Starlight begins to bottle up her emotions is an example of a separate entity taking advantage of a pony's feelings to gain power. Unless the example being raised had more to do with the ponies Starlight's emotions were taking control of? If the latter is the case, feel free to ignore this part of the comment entirely. Wow, we're already off to a great start with this, huh?
Anyway, at 4:08 King Sombra is used as an example of a corrupted pony, I may be wrong, but I believe that Sawtooth's original universe is the original My Little Pony universe, and in the original universe, Sombra's origins were never stated.
I suppose my confusion stems from this. Sombra's origins were never stated in the original universe, but neither was the Nightmare Force ever stated to exist in the OG MLP universe, so how can they correlate with one another?
Especially since, in the universe where The Night Forces and Sombra DO co-exist(The comics), Sombra is simply an Umbrum. And I know that Nameless touches on that fact somewhat, but I'm still unsure as to how Sombra could potentially be affiliated with the Nightmare Forces in any way. Next, at 4:51 The Pony of Shadows is mentioned and is regarded as a parasite, but I disagree with this.
Stygian himself admits that he freely gave into the Pony of Shadows:
"Welcome to the Well Of Shade, when you turned your backs on me, I discovered this place, The Darkness spoke to me of a power beyond any I could imagine, and I listened... The Shadow and I became one..." - A direct quote from Stygian/Pony of Shadows Pony Of Shadows Quote (Here's a link to the quote if anyone's curious)
The above seems to imply that Stygian was called to by the darkness, it offers him power, he accepts, and then he goes on the fulfill his vengeance. Something he did out of his own free will.
I think that it's likely that Stygian was being influenced by The Pony of Shadows but full-on controlled. I don't think there's enough evidence to really determine that, especially when taking into consideration Stygian's own words. Though I suppose that maybe the Pony of Shadows could have been pretending to be Stygian.
To wrap this part up, I suppose I disagree largely with describing The Pony of Shadows as a parasite. For it seems less like a parasite, and more like a symbiote of sorts. You bond with it, allow it to feed off of your negative emotions, and in return, you gain power, a new body, and a fresh pair of wings. It seems fair all things considered.
I also disagree with calling what happened to Stygian a "Possession" because that would imply that the Pony of Shadows forcefully controlled Stygian when it didn't. He's still seemingly in control of his own actions.
Which raises some interesting moral questions when you think about it. If Stygian really WAS in control, shouldn't the Pony of Shadows ALSO be given a free shake at redemption and not just Stygian?
Sure, it gave him power, but Stygian was the one that used it at the end of the day. For justice to truly be served, shouldn't BOTH of them be punished and or rehabilitated?
Anyway, time for some finished thoughts.
Personally, I was always of the mind that forms like Nightmare Moon, or Daybreaker, didn't come about because of the Nightmare Forces, but because of too many Negative emotions.
Like, look at what happened to Sci-Twi, too much magic, plus her fear, and her obsession with magic, which ended up creating Midnight Sparkle. No Nightmare Forces are needed. Even Sunset falls prey to this, Negative emotions, plus an overflow of magical energy lead to her becoming a She-demon, and still no Nightmare Forces insight.
Like, we know at large that emotions in general can change a pony's physical body, just look at Sunset's aura color from when she was still a bully, to her aura color when she reformed. From a cold cyan to a warm red. A positive emotional change can literally change ponies into a higher form of themselves, so why can't negative emotions do the same? I don't think The Nightmare Forces would be required for this whatsoever, just a pony/creature/whatever drawing on too much of one particular form of energy/emotions.
Also, at this point I'm rambling so you can ignore pretty much all of this since I already got finished commenting on the video but- I never really thought of forms like Nightmare Moon or Daybreaker as "Evil" They aren't. Not really. They're just versions of ponies that have taken in too much of certain emotions.
Like I said before if positive emotions can change you, why not negative emotions? If positive emotions like friendship, or kindness, can change you into an alicorn, why not negative emotions as well?
I'm repeating myself at this point. But to end it off, I think it's more worthwhile to think of forms like Nightmare Moon or Daybreaker, or Midnight Sparkle as less "Evil" And more Negative. The negative version of the true self.
The negative version of Twilight Sparkle is Midnight Sparkle, just like how her positive version might be the alicorn version of herself or just her regular self.
And there is a big difference between something being negative, and something being Evil. describing something as evil implies that in itself, the thing you are describing is malicious or somehow taboo, or even bad.
Negative emotions aren't and should not be considered something bad. They're something to embrace at the times when you need them, and something to recognize and let go of in other situations.
Like, anger is a big negative emotion, anger can hurt a lot of people. But sometimes we need anger to push us to be the best versions of ourselves. Sometimes being angry can help you stand up to a bully, and sometimes being angry can help you overthrow a tyrannical system or government.
I guess what I'm saying is, that it's when you embrace the negative emotions and really work to really understand them, that things improve, but understanding doesn't mean throwing them away entirely, you can still feel angry at a situation, without letting it consume you.
You can still feel and be empowered by negative emotions, without hurting yourself or other people around you. Because at the end of the day, just like positive emotions, negative emotions have their place in who we are. We wouldn't be here without our likes and dislikes, without are positives and negatives. One isn't better without the other, really they complement each other.
Well anyways, that's enough. I apologize for any grammatical errors, it's pretty late into the night, so I'm a little tired. I didn't mean to write so much, but it did so what can you do?
If anyone reads all of this, I'm actually kind of interested in what you think, whether you agree or disagree with me. Also, I apologize if certain parts of this begin to repeat, like I said before it's late, and this is a subject that I've taken a lot of time to think about, so I have a lot to say on the matter.

I think powerful magic is a requirement before it can corrupt. Not just anypony could be a target. We've seen it form from alicorns and one very talented unicorn (if the part of sombra being one is true). So i don't think the nightmare force would be interested in ponies that couldn't provide it with sufficient power. So all alicorns are vulnerable. Starlight, starswirl, and sunset are probably vulnerable. Maybe some pegasi that seem especially tuned to their pegasus magic like rainbow and lightning dust? Earth ponies are least likely to be vulnerable, but if anypony has enough earth pony magic it's rockhoof. For non ponies it's hard to say if any are more or less magical than other members of their species, so specific examples would be hard to come up with.

The first we get to see is Mirror Sombra, in the Reflections saga, who exists as a benevolent monarch because of corruption of our Sombra. He became corrupted because of the dark magic of the Mirror Royal Sisters clashing. When Sombra comes back in Siege of the Crystal Empire, Sombra was revealed to have been corrupted by a similar force to the Nightmare Force known as the Umbrums, and in the comics canon, Sombra and his childhood girlfriend managed to overcome the Umbrums and finally free him. And don't even get me started on Nightmare Rarity.

0 likesBut in the official MLP comics, it reveals that Sombra is an Umbra pony, not even a unicorn. He was given that form to trick the pony settlement nearby(the crystal empire) so he could one day release the other Umbrums to take/destroy Equestria
Again I'm not sure if you count the comics as canon but I do find the concept of the Umbrums to be very interesting
There's also a comic were Chrysalis talks about her past and we did get to see a time in those comics where the changelings didn't have the holes on their limbs and horns I believe

After all when dealing with an infectious Parasite If you don't destroy the remains of The afflicted body then it is still possible to be affected by the parasite even if Said parasite affected pony remains are undestroyed and I'm pretty sure no pony got rid of the shell that was left over from nightmare moon so maybe someone else could have gotten affected next but who?

0 likesPlus opaline is struggling to make friends/keep friends with misty, and we’ve seen evidence of Cozy being her true self when she’s been somebody’s friend for a bit. So opaline could’ve been all sweet on Misty in the beginning, and then revealed herself on some level later on. Making Misty feel like she’s indebted to her.🤷🏽♀️
At the very least, if twilight pulled a ‘cozy glow’ and sucked all of the magic out of Equestria, including creatures and artifacts/stones then we could be certain that the statue cozy glow was petrified in is no longer a statue and so the three creatures that were imprisoned there were also set free, though ‘powerless’ without magic.
(That’s leave the question on where are the other two?probably dead idk)

0 likesBtw, I found a theory on the interner that old mlp world is fluded in g5 and new g5 locations are near Canterlot and a bit wester (pegasi living on the top of the mountain where Canterlot was (Claudsdale has fallen there), earth ponies in ponyvile and unicorns on unicorn range). That also explains the technological difference, better technologies in place nearest to Canterlot, capital, average technologies near ponyvile and unadvanced in unicorn village (they basicaly had to build the city from scratch unlike others).

Well, you are forgetting one changeling, chrysalis. She has sharp teeth, slitted pupils, and her and sombra both lick their chops when around an item or being that could possess powerful positive emotions to drain from, like the crystal heart, or shining armor. So who's to say that chrysalis wasn't a victim to this corruption, and we've seen a good form of her in other worlds, so what if after she was corrupted, she produced unreformed changelings that also carried the corruption withing their dna and magic, then when a changeling reforms, the corruption becomes purified and disappears, leaving a more kind and positive creature. Like with your chrysalis reforming video, maybe she'd need help to be reformed through removing the nightmare parasite from her system so she can be her former self.

As Crysalis lacks anything Cadence wants, she has none of Shining’s actual love and I doubt Cadence ever wanted Changeling powers or a Changeling army. Sombra likely was a powerful unicorn, given his traps and gift for mental manipulation likely an illusionist. Some amount of jealousy corrupted him making his illusions even more powerful, given he took Cadence’s kingdom it was likely Cadence he felt jealousy towards.

0 likes@Reese I kinda wish they did. You know, I came up idea of Sunset dealing with her past physically. It would happen by having an other villain from Equestria coming to the human realm, he/she is like Discord, they can create illusion that becomes a reality. There's forth, they create an evil clone of Sunset, resembling her as she was in the 1st movie and they send her friends back to the 1600's, where anyone with magical powers was considered a witch, leaving sunset alone fighting her evil doppelganger, with two transformation (our Sunset in her current transformation vs evil doppelganger Sunset in a she demon form).
0 likesAnother idea I had with Sunset dealing with her past is in the dream realm. Where they fight off with this other villain, who cast a sleeping spell on and smashing her geo gem, causing the others to turn gray. While the other girl try to fight off this evil for without their powers, we see inside Sunset Shimmer's mind and see her fighting off 3 variation of herself aka her three transformations from the 1st, 3rd, and 4st movie.
1st Fight "Sunset vs her transformation from Legend of Everfree"
2nd Fight "Sunset vs her transformation from The Friendship Games"
3rd Fight "Sunset vs her She Demon self from the first movie"
And when it seems like it over for her, she soon finds out that it was actually a test, to see if Sunset it willing to fight not just for herself but also her friends, than her friendship is stronger than any magic, and they give her a piece of her broken geo, and say "Good Luck Element of Friendship". After she wakes up and sees her geo fixed and looking different, she finds out her friends are endangered and heads of the save them. Once there she gets a new transformation including wings that also turn in fire for extra speed. And after they defeat the villain, and there magic is restore they soon find out that Sunset finally became an alicorn.

Daybreaker appeared in the episode "A Royal Problem", where Starlight was tasked with solving a friendship problem between the royal sisters. Daybreaker appeared again in the season 9 premiere, when Sombra made Twilight see her worst fears of failing and disappointing the sisters.

For all we know you can alter a piece of clothing without to make it magical either (right now I'm thinking about Twilight's WWU jacket, that got teleported around Twilight). I'm not far enough in the video, but I'd dig in stuff like the stream of silence or how Tirek took magic and Starlight sealed cutie marks.
