YES, all good insights. I feel it's like being on a diet and going to a restaurant and being expected to eat the salad. But if you go to the right restaurant then there are a lot of great salads on the menu. This was a confusing analogy. Basically it's hard and I'm finding it reassuring that you're also finding it difficult as I thought I was going a bit mad

but anyway. i was sober for 3 months recently (due to circumstances) and though i love alcohol, the taste of it, the feel of it, after a couple of weeks you just kinda forget about it. and when ppl drink around you you're like "oh! people do that?? that's weird". it's really nice knowing you can abstain from alcohol and have fun without it if you so choose. so yeah, props to you, awesome of you for trying this!

The times I drank are countable on one hand and I relate to what you are saying. If the situation is fun, it's fun. It it's kinda boring- it's most likely because it actually IS boring. How weird is it that we human beings need basically this kind of drug to go to a thing that's boring, that makes in fun? I think that's kind of weird but oh well, probably because I've never been a fan of alcohol.

I get what it's like being sober at parties. I've never drank and been on lads holidays and nights out clubbing and house parties and it's the people that make the night out for me. If the people around me are happy, I'm happy. One of the best nights out I've ever had was bowling with my friends where we only drank slushes and ate chicken nuggets. You can learn to have fun without alcohol and you can learn to love other people when they're drunk and in your face. There are those of us who understand what it's like to be in your shoes and trust me, it can be a great thing being at a party sober because fun is fun, regardless of alcohol content

Keep being cool, keep doing your thing. Our society at large has a problem when we communally need to blur our vision to feel comfortable in each others company. Ironic too that we push ceaselessly for high definition in all aspects aside from our own raw social interaction.
I once felt like you did, and after 18 months off, it changed my view on alcohol from something that I loved to something that had become meaningless.
Lucy is right; if something is needs alcohol to be enjoyable, then it's probably rubbish anyway. ;)

hi Dodie! I totaly get you, i did the exact same thing a year and a half ago. I'm currently in medical school (im 23), so there are some mad parties, and pub crawls... (you get the idea and if you ever met a med. student you know how much we drink. PS. more than we need) So i basically stopped drinking and try to understand the meaning and the ways of how to have fun without getting intoxicated. Not gonna lie... it was really hard, people pure pressing you in for just to have one sip, or you thinking that its only 1 beer who cares... but infact i did manage to go without drinking anything and still being social for a month. And i really did learn the ways of having fun. So now its been almost 2 years now, i sometimes drink, sometimes i dont. It doesnt matter cause in that moment i am with the people that i want and im having fun with or without alcohol. It is not a determining factor that i used to think 2 y. ago.

So yeah! Good luck with your challange. And if you ever need support, you have this awesome communty you have to back you up!

Go Dodie!!! You can have fun without an aid and sometimes things you thought were fun simply aren't. That a really good thing to know. And it's okay for things to not be fun. Sometimes that's best. You're doing great and I e never thought you an alcoholic. It's just easy to get rid of nerves and unwanted thoughts and feelings by drinking a drink. Even if just one.

I'm wheat intolerant but it only started when I was 16 so I know the deliciousness that is actual cake and your cake analogy was too real. The pain of being in a room of delicious cake that you cannot eat SIGH one time I found myself at a pizza and cake party by accident that was some BS. So I feel you but more via the cake metaphor :P Well done anyway!

The cake metaphor is actually a good analogy. For the last month or so I've been trying to eat healthier and be more active. And it's definitely hard when my friends are eating unhealthy things that I'm trying to stay away from. I know it's alright if I have it in moderation, but the fact that I feel the need to eat junk food and don't have the willpower to stop is what bothers me. It's been an interesting little journey figuring out what I need to do to take care of my physical health and I've learned a lot about myself, mainly that my willpower is not as strong as I've convinced myself it is. Trying to change my mindset is hard and it's really cool that you're vocalizing how hard it is to make those changes in yourself.

I'm so proud of how well you're doing!! It's way too easy to just have a few drinks for the sake of it but it is important to understand that you don't nEED it and it's just a lilfun sometimes when controlled and responsible 😊 I'm glad that I do know my limits especially if I'm not in the mood that night FOR EXAMPLE I went out last night but I could tell when I was getting tired and no longer getting a buzz and not because I was drinking less but bc the music was a bit poop and atmosphere not as full energy lol but also there's other nights where I'll stop drinking as much but get such a buzz from the atmosphere and tunes that I keep going and maybe alcohol helps a lil but it definitely ain't gonna give you an actual life buzz <3

I just remembered something you said when you started the challenge: how it is that Londoners see a heavy consumption of alcohol as completely normal. On a trip in the US I once met a girl from London who excessively partied almost every day of the week. And she was a nursing student, which struck me as an incredibly strange combo. Learning that it is like a cultural thing for you guys is sort of eye-opening, but I still don't get the appeal. I worked at a student's club for three years and saw so many drunken escapades (and ridiculous sums spent on drinks) while tending the bar that I feel like I never want that experience for myself ever again. I hope you'll continue to have great moments and fun without the need for the buzz. It's so much more real!

I've stopped drinking and it's been about 6 months now. I did feel the same in that I felt like i didn't have fun and that alcohol made me a more open person. But with the not drinking, I realized I'm in more control and can have a better time without it. Alcohol is good for nothing. There's no benefits to it at all.

I think there's such power to be found in showing ourselves that we really can live without things that could potentially control us - whether it be alcohol, cake, shopping or what have you. Good on you for doing it young. You'll always have the knowledge that you can have a good life either way

Going sober might do wonders for your mental health - alcohol and depression do not mix. Also, in my experience as someone who quit drinking for good (recovering alcoholic), anxiety dreams about drinking are extremely common. You'll probably have a few more this month.

I went out last night and decided not to drink as I struggle to know my limits and tend to get too drunk and vomit or blackout. It was so nice spending time with friends, remembering everything and waking up hangover free this morning! Not drinking is definitely something I'm going to take into consideration more.

I've been sober for 12 days too, it's all about who you're with and the music that's playing to have a good night I totally agree :) I don't feel the need to have alcohol ever again tbh, and to help myself I've given away all my spirits to friends/raffle prizes for fundraisers. It's so much better waking up without a hang over and not having to apologise to all your friends for throwing up in the taxi home the next day. I've had some of the best nights out these past few weeks plus discovered some awesome new non alcoholic drinks - why did I not know about ginger beer?! Wishing you luck with your sober journey xxx

I became a vegetarian almost a year ago and at first I had these horrible dreams of eating meat and I would wake up disappointed and guilty but eventually the dreams passed. I accepted vegetarianism like you accept a freckle or something on your body, like "yeah sure that's part of me but it doesn't define me", hopefully you can pass the stage where you worry about it that much and let it be. I stopped drinking about 2 years ago and recently went to a uni reunion and everyone was drinking and it was the first time in a long time that I've had that urge (it makes my anxiety worse which is why I avoid it) but I didn't drink and I'm so proud of myself.

i did the same thing with sugar last year. i didn't eat any sugar for the entire year. and at first it's really hard, but once you get used to it you start to notice a lot about how you feel left out and want things more because you can't have them. but you also really learn that you don't need it, and that the only reason (at least for me) that you want it in the first place is because everyone else has it and you're slightly addicted. it's not super fun to go without it, but it's really interesting and it actually helps you to see if you actually need it or if you're just used to having it

So, I have kept myself from drinking since I saw your other video. I also have not drunk a while before you uploaded that so I guess it has been about the same time as you since I drank. I honestly don't know for sure. Either way, when I decided I wanted to take a break from the alcohol I also decided this was a perfect time to stop smoking. I have been using my e-cigarette though, but nonetheless, I have not smoked for a week now (which btw, is a long time for me). I do crave both alcohol and cigarettes a lot... and I mean it. A. Big. I think it's funny you used cake as a metaphor as last year I was not allowed to have any sugar or alcohol for ~ 6 months. So I got both the "Why won't you have a slice of cake" and the "Why are you drinking water at a party" question. Funnily enough less people questioned the no sugar rule, while most of my friends pitied me for not being able to enjoy a drink while out ^^

(also on a side note, i've had anxiety dreams about being drunk before too, which is a particularly strange feeling since i have never been drunk. im old enough that most of my friends have been drunk, but the prospect of losing control like that makes me feel rather panicky, which is exactly what the dreams are about)

omg! I can't drink for medical reasons and I have anxiety dreams about drinking soo often, I guess it's a bit different because if I drink I'll have to go to hospital, but still, definitely something my brain fixates on.

If this is what you feel you need to do right now, that's great. But I can attest that I was feeling a lot of the same ways about alcohol as you and for quite a while it was enough for me to change my mindset to just get LESS drunk LESS often. So more about moderation.And I've been a lot happier.
But yeah, it's still not the greatest because when I DO get too drunk (which happens to the best of us) I still make dumb decisions so idk.

Last october was my sober month actually and I realized that not spending money with drinks at bars and such was quite a bit of change by the end of the month! Made me rethink my attitude with alcohol, where i might not want to drink but I feel pressured to bc of the atmosphere and so in my brain im now like its okay! you're also saving some money! Perks!

Grew up with teetotal parents, and I'm teetotal, so I never really understood drinking in general (if it tastes as bad as it smells, just why?? Mocktails are amazing). But I really didn't like the idea of needing a substance to have fun/make something fun; if something sucks I'll either work on making it legitimately better or do something that I actually find fun? I don't know if it's different with actual alcohol but I never understood that.

I find it crazy that exactly one year ago I drank alcohol for the first time, not a lot but it was the actual first time. At that time I was 15 1/2 years old and thought that I would never feel the need to drink alcohol ever... little dumb me, now 16 1/2 years old likes to have a drink every once in a while, which I honestly don't find bad as long as I don't get completely wasted every weekend
I actually only drink at birthdays, new years, going out for dinner or something like that and even then not all the time and again just a little
I'll honestly say that I like being a little drunk (that kind where you are really having fun and wake up feeling better then ever the next morning), but if you have the right people around you, drinks are not necessarily the thing you need to have a great time

One of my not drinking alcohol tips is drinking exciting non alcoholic drinks. Like if you're at a bar, order virgin drinks instead of just water or soda. If you're going to a house party bring something a bit more exciting, like a fancy lemonade or something.
It won't give you the buzz, but it will make it feel like a special occasion in the way alcohol makes it feel

I went to a party a week ago and then decided to stop drinking at about midnight and switch to water. My friends acted like I betrayed them and wanted me to continue drinking, It was really weird. I decided to completely stop drinking after that night, I believe it's for the best.

At the start, you might not enjoy denying yourself alcohol, but then you will feel more powerful and you'll have complete control of your mind, and thoughts. it sounds crazy and pretentious, but trust me, being straight edge is the best decision i've ever made in my entire life. no alcohol, drugs, smoke, animal meat and all that stuff. it feels amazing to have 100% control of your own body, mind, and soul. I can't wait to live my life whole life this way. it's refreshing and clensing. good luck with your alcohol free period of time <3 and if you can't do it, that's totally okay! drinking is totally up to you! but please be safe <3 much love for you dodie, you're one of my favorite humans

we had some past alcoholics come into pshce to talk to us, it was interesting. one thing they said was that there are different types of alcoholism. one person had a binge drinking one, which is when they can go months and months without drinking then drink a shit ton in an hour. the other one needed to have alcohol in their system literally all the time, even if they weren't binging. you could have a mild form of that?

I find it interesting that some people drink so they can relax and like losing control but I (and probably a bunch of others) are complete opposite... as soon as I notice my speech pattern being messed up, losing fine motor skills etc. I panic and stop drinking. I like the taste of alcohol and the buzz but even the thought of "getting black-out drunk" or "not remembering stuff I did" freaks me out. Not being in control of my body is like one of my biggest fears.

I basically mostly drink in family situations now lol, I actually decided to stop drinking at your cereal cafe show last year (the first one with Conor and Keeva and Lauren) because I drank an entire bottle of wine and I fell down really hard and had the most painful bruise on my leg for ages. It was bad. I had basically drank a lot because I went on my own and felt nervous. Never again. Good show though!

You are so right, I think this all the time! You can have just as much (if not more) fun sober than drunk. So drinking alcohol is literally for example, the same as pretending a joke is funny when it's actually rubbish - you know? And I find the concept of wanting getting blackout drunk weird too.. that's so weird. last Saturday I went to a party and drank EVERYTHING. it was one of the best nights of my life but I spent the entire Sunday almost dead. I couldn't eat anything, my head hurted like hell, I felt like shit. so yesterday, a week later, it was my best friend's birthday and he invited me to a club. I had the memory of the last Sunday really fresh in my mind so I end up having four beers and three waters. today I feel fine. but I was thinking about this, just right before I watched this how I didn't had THAT much fun. it was OK, I had a pleasant time, but it wasn't legendary, epic, memorable. it was just OK.
I guess it was because I didn't get massive drunk and this scares me. do I need to be hammered to have a great time? I'm certainly going to spend a lot of time thinking about this.

I think it's sad that our society gives so much importance to something that's not healthy, and not compulsory to have a good time. Drinking alcohol seems to be the norm...

I love that, I didn't drink for 18 years I know legal age, but I went t party's all throughout my teen years and it's cause I'm happy and have fun without it so didn't do it, also as an anxiety sufferer I decidied not too. i've had that same anxiety dream. like i purposely don't drink (partly bc im underage, but since im in college, that doesn't really matter tbh) bc my dad is alcoholic and im scared im going to be like him. addiction runs v strongly in my family so i try not to do anything that could lead to an addiction, like drinking or drugs. but one night i had that same anxiety dream, where i had downed an entire bottle of wine without realizing. and like dream-me noticed that and started panicking bc i had broken the one promise i made it myself. when i woke up, i had to like focus on remembering if i actually did that or not. but yeah i understand the panic that those dreams can involve.
im so proud of u for doing this entire month sober. i know it's hard, but you're doing it for such a good reason and you're doing great!!! i wish u all the best! so much love to you, dear!!

i'm learning to be as understanding as i can to people who drink often, but some of your thoughts this month line up with why i tend to have such a hatred for drinking/alcohol: the "well if we feel we need a drink we mustnt be enjoying yourself" because im so!!! ready to live and just enjoy everything!! and "drunk people are so in your face!!" yes!! and somehow it seems fine if youre the drunk one, but i have never drank and have always felt uncomfortable with drunk people... but anyway, glad youre trying this out dodie! i really hope it teaches you some cool things!!

I had my wisdom teeth out two weeks ago, and it's not so much that I /need/ to drink, but it was the first time since I turned 18 that I couldn't drink? Because obviously opiates and alcohol aren't a great mix
And so I was at the farewell of my friend who was moving to Poland and everyone was drinking and we went back to mind afterwards and my parents had put ciders in the fridge so my friends were drinking those too
And I don't need to drink, last year I would go months at a time without drinking and this summer I've been drinking at most once a week but it's the difference of not being able to? Like you actually can't do the thing versus just not doing it cause you don't really feel like it
It was just an interesting distinction that I'd noticed

i can relate to this in a strange way-- i went vegan in june because i hate the way animals are treated and i wanted to be healthier, and it's still difficult. whenever my friends or people around me are eating cake or pizza or chicken fingers or whatever it is very hard because i love those things, but then i remember why i'm doing it and why its important to me. don't give up. i know you can do it dodie!

I don't drink bc of religious reasons and I've noticed that whenever I turn down a drink, people seem put off by it. not in a rude way, just in a curious way. I guess they don't understand why. like Im not alcoholic. I just don't want to bc I know that I will use drinking as a coping mechanism for my anxiety. its just that I don't necessarily want to reveal that to every person that I meet and so it's just awkward when I say no to an alcoholic beverage.

I'm doing the sober thing in February too, not because I drink a lot (I drink like once every one or two months), but because I want through a breakup recently. The day that me and the person broke up, I drank a lot and called my friend to tell her everything (sober, I wouldn't have told anyone until the asked), and the next day other friend came to stay at mines, and we drank again. So, after that, I'm trying a month of alcohol free, facebook free and eating healthy (failing horribly on that one).

You are very smart and will figure out what is best for you. :)

And I recently moved to a different country and here it's normal for kids my age to drink and get drunk (like in most countries) and idk, it hit me pretty hard because I realized that these teenagers are my age. Hey Dodie, your cake metaphor does not quite fit in the case of drinking or using other drugs. Eating a cake doesn't change your mindset as drugs do. You did mention it, if there are people on different drugs at a party you will notice that it is quite to keep a connection to those others, unless you force it. like getting yourself in the spirit of drunk. So in some way you are separating yourself from a Group or least there is the fear of separation for that Night, because you are not particapating.

I'm at Uni, and let me just say, not drinking is really quite boring!! Like I choose not to because I don't like tipsy me (let alone how others feel about tipsy me), but I always find myself excluded at parties because if there's a drinking game going on, I can't really involve myself. I also always worry that if anything were to happen with another party-goer (anything physical), I'd be in trouble as I was totally sober. But the girl who I have a massive crush on is always drinking. Not to oblivion but just enough to have fun.
