I know I'm late on this, but I have to say this PMV is just so dang clever with its use of the UNIX terminal and how accurate it is to one. The effects used are just so well done and it evolves on all the similar styles of PMVs that have been done before. The story that it has behind it all really makes it feel complete. Congrats on Best In Show, ZX!
Congratz! Time for me to lay down some of my thoughts: I absolutely fell in love with the story. Twilight, being an immortal alicorn, outlives her friends and can't cope with such tremendous losses since her life has revolved around friendship. She then creates a simulation so she can relive those memories over and over. However, there is no off switch once the simulation starts, so no turning back.
It's a powerful story that elicits strong empathy. If anyone did not fully understand the story, you need to pay close attention to the text and lines of code. It's all there.
Personally, I think the weakest part of the video is the use of show footage. The scenes you chose were mostly old season 1 and 2 scenes which are heavily overused in PMVs to the point of being cliche. There is so much great stuff in the last 3 seasons, use it! Additionally, it's very obvious that you took heavy inspiration from Jack's Shelter PMV from last year. That's not a bad thing, but it kind of felt like I was the same kind of thing again. Some more creative scene selection would have fixed that.
Overall, it's my favorite video from you (other than collaborations) and it feels like you drew upon all your skills to craft this amazing video. Great job!
Thank you! If you're curious, you can check the description to see all of the project materials, including a story outline and detailed story map to see how close you were to the intent. (Hint: you were just about spot on.)
In regards to using show footage: because I am not an animator, I was not able to animate custom scenes to illustrate her memories in a clean, convincing manner. We had toyed with a handful of ideas for portraying this, such as stills, picture frames and popups on the computer screen, but none of them fit strongly enough, so we fell back onto show footage in order to ensure the video has something of a secure, stable backbone. We could have gone above and beyond, had either of us had the skill set, but we did not, so show footage was something to fall back on.
As for why we only used the first two seasons: as depicted in the scene where Twilight reads the "Magical Upgrade" line in the logs, she feels this was a negative turning point in her life, as it was the point where she "lost" her friends. She shared times together with them for years after the fact, but that was the event that sent her down the path of losing them. Because of this, she suppresses everything after she had become an Alicorn, and was left with memories only before that happened. We wanted it to be a more powerful experience, showing just how hurt she was by becoming what any other pony could only dream of, and using footage or other materials beyond her coronation would have muddied the waters a bit, we felt.
It's hard to get enough of this idea! A world hundreds, if not thousands of years later, in which technology seems to have become our last resort of preserving our history, our memories, and ourselves. Porter Robinson has created a FANTASTIC world of that!!!!! And PMV artists like JackDC93 and you have worked that world into Equestria BEYOND AMAZINGLY well!!! I was SO HAPPY when I saw your name come up at the Contest Results Panel for Best in Show, and it's VERY CLEAR you deserved that spot! With your hard work on WONDERFULLY SICK and CLEAN editing, unique narrative, LOVELY visuals, and AMAZINGLY FANTASTIC choice of music, you continue to amaze me with what you create, and how much you improve!!! ^-^ PS: For anyone who wasn't at the panel, when Twilight was working out the username, someone shouted out "CD_PROJECT_RED!", as a reference to the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 trailer!
Wow, that was an emotional roller coaster. Very creative use of the coding and I love how it gets all colorful as she remembers her past. Congratulations on winning the PMV contest. You deserve it.
I'm no professional brony critic but I can see that Twilight got through some things that an ordinary viewer takes for granted. This is a good video showing that.
I decoded all binary code at 3:12: "You have a very keen eye being able to catch this. This is one of many Easter Eggs in this video though. Can you find them all"
10.10.10-1030.10.10.eq3.x86_64 is my favorite LinZX Kernel! PoneOS isn't my distribution of choice, in fact I dislike all Ponian-based distros.. I prefer Arch. :P
