A lot of people hate this one, and I agree that it's hard to watch, but it does give some interesting insight into Fluttershy's character. I think she has trouble gauging what's appropriate when interacting with other ponies; it can be really hard to determine when to defer to others and when to assert your own needs. Because she's a kind pony and genuinely doesn't want to hurt or inconvenience anypony else, she normally errs on the side of just giving in to everypony. When she's pushed to stick up for herself instead, she can't judge where to stop. I actually really relate to that struggle; I've probably made similar, if less extreme, mistakes. The level of cruelty to her friends definitely seems exaggerated for such a quick change, so a lot of people complain that she's acting totally out of character, but I think this episode is condensing a real-life problem, where over time bad experiences (and bad advice) can convince a nice person that everyone else will take advantage of their kind nature and mistreat them unless they become rude and aggressive themselves. It's a good lesson to explore, and I'm just glad Fluttershy steps back over the line to being her sweet self and eventually finds the right balance.
My biggest issue with this episode is that the ponies in Ponyville are outright assholes to Fluttershy. Seriously. The whole thing feels mean spirited and out of character for the show.
I relate to Fluttershy so much. I also have trouble speaking up. And have a hard time gauging what appropriate social behavior is. I'm shy with a social problem in other words.
@@ChiropteraNightfall Agreed. I don't think I suggested that there were no hints of Fluttershy's darker side prior to this episode--just that the way it escalated over the course of this episode felt extreme, so it's unsurprising that it's a controversial one. It's the first time we see Fluttershy be outright mean to her friends without Discord's influence. Her getting mad and chasing animals in the season one finale is played for laughs, not explored as a serious character flaw like what we get here.
But this show is great about planting things early and expanding on them over time. I love the character development. If you're watching through Ponybro's reactions, I'm sure you'll see more of my old comments geeking out about it. MLP was a huge comfort show for me in 2020. Nice to chat about it again.
@@HeavyMetalMal42 I know this is a year ago, but I do want to say this isn't exactly the first episode we've seen Shy's meaner side. That would be in the finale of season one. And then there was a moment in the starter episodes- I blanked on the name of what starter episodes are called- of season two, specifically part two of The Return of Harmony. During the balloon chase.
Really, this is one of the few standalone episodes that had setup from previous episodes.
I totally agree, in fact I on the other hand love this episode. People focus too much on the details, but the big picture is an important lesson about being assertive, and for us shy people this is actually a difficult lesson. I also feel represented with Fluttershy in so many ways, and sure: Fluttershy was cruel to her friends, but only because of what you said: she wasn't used to putting limits, so she didn't know when to stop. And she felt bad about it afterwards anyways, and her friends understood. Many of us make mistakes and even say offensive stuff sometimes.
Elian mainly when fluttershy made a personal attack on rarity and pinkie pie is what makes people really dislike this episode on the basis of how uncomfortable it is for someone who’s usually nice to essentially attack her friends on a personal level. At least that’s my reason and how much fluttershy is bullied and taken advantaged of in the first half.
@@Foreleus it does feel super contrived that everyone in Ponyville outside the Mane 6 is suddenly an asshole for one episode, and that Fluttershy can be pushed to change so much so fast. The episode has no finesse in setting up the idea that Fluttershy might have a mean streak she normally suppresses, It just happens all at once and it's too extreme.
But she makes similar mistakes enough after this (e.g. Fake it Till You Make It) that I can't call it out of character anymore. That character trait was clumsily introduced, but is a part of Fluttershy. Accepting that makes it easier for me to watch this episode without focusing as much on how jarring it is.
I've noticed that each Element of Harmony is represented not by a pony who's always been perfect at it, though it can seem that way a lot of the time, but by a pony who has struggled with it and thus put the effort into learning and improving at it. Applejack used to be a serial liar and still occasionally dodges questions or tells a white lie. Rainbow Dash has trouble being a team player. Rarity can be possessive and materialistic. Pinkie Pie sometimes takes things super hard and gets serious in a scary way (Pinkamena) or treats the wrong thing like a joke and hurts her friends. And Twilight Sparkle used to be uninterested in (and terrible at, according to Lyra) friendship, which as we all know is magic.
IMO this episode was contrived as fuck. Legit bullying fluttershy into being something she rarely is, if ever, from up to this point. Since she’s rarely assertive and as such she doesn’t know entirely where the lines are.
Yet another example of how Kindness is probably the most dangerous of the elements of harmony. The normal, uninverted element is strong enough to resist almost anything thrown against it in terms of inversion potential, and is an extraordinarily powerful force of reformation.
Meanwhile, it's inverse is dangerous in the, well, opposite way. Inverted kindness is extremely capable when it comes to breaking others down. Very strong in both the reformation department- once broken, if I recall, it is far easier to shape someone's perceptions of things- and in a more naturally offensive department. Meanwhile, inverted kindness is also very easy to put back to normal, as shown here, in the Discord episode, and in the GGG episode.
If the elements of harmony weren't mindstate dependant, and if Fluttershy was more in control of her own state of mind, she'd likely be the most important of the Mane Six.
I don't think this episode is that bad. I do like its moral and some of its writing, its comedy, and Pinkie and Rarity were awesome. Besides, anyone who hates it can agree with me on one thing: It is WAY better than another project with a doormat: Re-Animated!

I love how Pinkie Pie did the Bugs Bunny trick on the salespony and Iron Will. In the end, Fluttershy learned to say no to Iron Will, which surprised Rarity and Pinkie Pie. That never gets old 🐰🐰🐰😲😲😲🤣🤣🤣
I don’t know a lot of people hate this but I never really did. I don’t think it’s that good and probably the worst of Season 2 but I really don’t hate it per se. I think when you compare it to some of the later episodes in Seasons 6 and 8 (not that those seasons are bad they just happen to have some of the worst episodes) it’s really not that bad and kind of entertaining.
Even though Iron Will isn't a villain, Hasbro did advertise him as one in things like trading cards and the Adventure Ponies video game. It does make sense though because the show really only had two actual villains at that point (five if you count Trixie and Flim & Flam).
If you think about it the ending makes no sense at all. By standing up to Iron Will she is being assertive which she wouldn't have been able to do without iron-will's teachings so she should be satisfied and she should have to pay.
She learned it from her friends. She learned to be mean from Iron Will, but she learned to be assertive from her friends. Also she wasn't satisfied, she hated how she acted

If I had a companion like Angel who was an unappreciative brat I would let him starve if he wouldn't eat what I give him; also the only reason Rarity was able to get the asparagus from that guy was because he was attracted to her and he probably thought she might let him bone her.
I mean she was legit pushed out of character my a contrived as fuck plot of events. even her friends were encouraging her to learn something she’s unfamiliar with.
Those 2 ponies who told fluttershy to move back & get a life, OOF, I would have gone all steaming firecracker on their asses! I would have been like "Yeah no, why don't YOU move! I was here FIRST & need my asparagus. So make like a bee & buzz off"
