Did Grogar Bail Out Nightmare Moon?

The theory isn't completely disproven, it's just that Grogar is still stuck as a constellation. After all, Grogar is real. Discord said so himself - "They got the Real Grogar's Magic from the bell!"

I just had a thought, so nightmare moon was released by something to do with the night, the stars.
So when the cutie mark crusaders started to act chaotic, that is when discord could be released. It could be possible that to be released from a spell you have to have aid by your type. (If that makes sense)

Interesting theory, Sawtooth! It's certainly plausible that Grogar was banished to space similar to Luna, though it probably would have taken a great deal of power to do it. Also, there's apparently an MLP comic story where Discord's dangerous "ex" Cosmos was banished and imprisoned in a constellation, got out, caused a lot of trouble, and was eventually banished (again) to the moon. If it happened to two MLP characters, it could probably happen to Grogar as well.

Something that bugs me about "Suited For success" is that Twilight's dress incorrectly shows the constellation "Taurus" as the constellation "Aries". Taurus is the bull, and is two pronged in its pattern, but Aries is no and is like a line.

I like this theory. But still a question remains. Who wrote the prophesy that nightmare moon would escape with the aid of the stars? Was it Gusty herself? Did she know this would happen when Luna was banished?

I don't know if you stated this in a previous video so I'm putting it here: I didn't think that the Cutie Mark Crusader so much "pushed" Discord to escape, but rather Discord started being able to "irradiate" disharmony as the spell was wearing out since the elements of harmony found new bearers. And I was actually also putting the first Grand Galloping Gala events on Discord's back, as him being the reason why the mane six got so mad over little things to the point it spiraled out of control. We don't see that at all happen since the attempt at reforming Discord (but then the show was under other scenarist's control), but these two events and the double episode with Discord left me thinking his character was designed with that power to irritate chosen characters's nerves to make them argue for nothing. Sooo... idk what to do "now", I mean since he's reforming, maybe he does have this power and maybe he's just not using it at all because he's reformed enough to stop with this habit at least, or maybe with a new team of scenarists the idea wasn't actually stated or pursued... (maybe I did already comment this in another video, I can't remember)

I think I might have a theory about how Nightmare Moon escaped from the moon. I think that, indirectly, Twilight caused Nightmare Moon's escape. What I mean, is that her presence, the presence of someone who was ready to accomplish something that not even Celestia could do, triggered something. As Sawthoot said stars are like agents. And those agents, could be guided by the three of Harmon as it sensed Twilight getting closer to the elements, giving them new bearers as well as new powers (since I think the elements are more effective if used by more that just one. That would also explain why Celestia didn't release Luna from her nightmare corruption). So, long story short, the tree sensed Twilight's magic and moved the stars to free Nightmare Moon, so that she could defeat her and give the elements to new protectors of Equestria

The grogar in season 9 is discord in diguise and there is a legend about him in mlp but the original is probably still there in the sky

I just imagine the MLP producers like: “ Ok we’ll make random nonsense and let all the fans create logic “

There's a problem I noticed on the constellation part. While the sky has 4 stars which you claim to be Aries/Grogar, the constellation on the dress has 5 stars. And, as we all know, 4 does not equal 5. Just a thought.

6:19 - 6:47 makes SO MUCH sense, and even though I'm still not sure Grogar aided her escape, I'd like to believe he's trapped in the stars -- but then at 6:48 you get caught up in that thing Dr. Wolf helps you with, which by the way makes total sense, except needless to say the show proved otherwise -- that you took the spotlight away from what I think is the most important thing you were getting at: 6:40 "an ancient, deeper magic; possibly stronger than the tree of harmony itself"

and my point (sorry for taking so long, thanks for those who bared with me, if there are any even) is... perhaps those two powerful magicks are one and the same. The ancient powerful source of magic Gusty may have used was one of a higher friendship between all magical beings: the magic of harmony!

THEORY IDEA: I've been rewatching a lot of your videos and this sparked an idea. In ancient equestria we have figures like gusty the great and starswirl the bearded, and grogar capable of great magic. Later we have celestia and luna, powerfull yes, but not quite as the same level as those before then. Then 1000+ years after that we have twilight and starlight glimmer who, powerful in their own right, pale in comparison. And in the next generation movie, magic is all but gone in the begining limited to a few artifacts and sonny isn't even a real alicorn by the end. So what if magic is getting weaker. What if magic itself is fading. Or changing? What if, givin another 1000 or so years magic as we know it will be completely gone. Ps, sorry for long comment

I still feel like there's an untold MLP Episode where Twilight, Starlight and Princess Luna had to go back in time to help the Past Princess Celestia release Nightmare Moon for the whole Series to properly take place.
It would explain both the Disappearance of Celestia and give a great explanation as to what the 'Stars' were that aided NM's escape...

I'm guessing this video and theory was made before the revelation of how, exactly, Grogar really...returned...came up. But I like the theory that he's a constellation and is the stars in question. Notably, the way his magic works with his collar has a very "stars moving" effect to it, and the collar itself could reference (albeit with a different number of stars) Orion's Belt, too.

Though it is worth pointing out that Grogar is a goat, not a ram. The crystal ball having a goat-eye doesn't make much sense, otherwise.

Still, again, I like the stars theory.

I still think that there's partly a debuff in this theory. I believe that from what I've heard, Grogar's banishment spell was weekend in season 9 when cozy glow sucks up all the magic from Equestria. Yet the Stars dated her escape AKA nightmare Moon, in season 1. How would Grogarbe able to help nightmare Moon before he was weekend of his banishment spell?

I don't know if this adds anything to the theory, but there is something I would like to add on for symbolism or whatever. In real mythology, Ares is the Greek god of war and violence. His half sister, Athena, represents the quote unquote 'better side of war' things like battle tactics, along with being goddess of wisdom and crafting. Now, compare this to Grogar and gusty. I obviously don't think the two are related in any sort of way, but let Grogar represent Ares (based on the whole constellation thing) and Gusty represent Athena. Grogar is known for his reign of Tyranny, he is well admired amongst the villains who know of him. He likely tried going to war with many other nations in a grasp for power, and he probably gained power within Equestria through battles. Meanwhile, Gusty is cunning, crafty and intelligent. She learned what Grogars power source was and she took advantage of it. Another thing is that, within his own pantheon, Ares was very disliked, even hated amongst the Olympians, whilst Athena was admired. Grogar, for those who know of him, is remembered as a terrible tyrant who stole magic from hundreds of ponies, and Gusty is more well known and admired for her many accomplishments. Just some food for thought :)

This question just went into my head when I was watching this video, where did Celestia go when Nightmare Moon appeared. Maybe she helped Nightmare Moon escape?

I want to suggest Clover the Clever who wrote the “the stars will aid in her escape” prophecy.
As a studied unicorn, Clover could have known this 1000-year “expiration date” for banishment spells.
And then we have the question of age. Seeing how Clover was the mentee of Starswirl, Clover’s age would’ve been younger than Starswirl. It is possible that Clover was alive and witnesses the banishment of Nightmare Moon, the former Princess Luna.
Having inherited/studied knowledge recorded from Gusty (about Grogar and his motivations,) & Starswirl’s (spell-casting, Elements of Harmony) time, it isn’t a reach to say that Clover was equipped to foretell this prophecy.
It was Clover the Clever who wrote the prophecy regarding the Mare in the Moon, her banishment, and her release from the moon (thanks to the Ram in the Sky).

While this theory is sound, there's really one fatal flaw. Why would Grogar help a force of evil, when that force of evil is one set upon a flawed foundation?


Tirek is a true force of evil because he simply wants all magic for himself, he has no reason outside of his lust for power. His foundation is sound.
Chrysalis is prideful, wanting to bring down the ponies that sought to destroy her and her Hive, but now wanting revenge for ponies taking away her Hive, her lust for revenge. Her foundation is sound.
Cozy Glow is both Tirek and Chrysalis combined. She wants power, and she's prideful. She seeks that which others have through any means necessary, and sought revenge through a "if I can't have it, noone can" scenario, simultaneously blaming those that sought to foil her plans. She wants more revenge for her plans being broken. Her foundation is sound.
Sombra is a tyrant. He's prideful and manipulative. He seeks power over his subjects and wishes to wage war to take more land and subjects. He wants to rule with a tyrannical hoof for the sole reason of having the power. His foundation is sound.

Nightmare Moon isn't any of those. She was a Nightmare borne of jealousy, she simply wanted the love and adoration that she felt she lacked. Her Eternal Night plans were simply borne of wanting to see others adore her night. A misguided soul. Her foundation isn't sound. While yes, it required the EoH cleansing her for her to see the light, that was only because she was lost. I have no doubt that if not the EoH, she would've eventually been cleansed regardless. The Nightmare timeline seen from Starlight's kerfuffle was likely an early look into that scenario, just like the others were, so you can't even argue that that scenario shows she was irredeemable outside of being cleansed. Grogar would've been aware that Nightmare Moon was Princess Luna, one of the two most powerful ponies. Why would he help free somepony that would likely not remain evil? Jealousy is an emotion that can easily be ignored, people do it all the time.

Think like an evil mastermind, you want lackeys that won't stab you in the back. That you know are powerful, but not moreso than you. Tirek is weaker than Grogar, he's intimidated by him. In my opinion this suggests Grogar's magic cannot be succ'd by Tirek, something which is the centaur's main strength. Chrysalis is intimidated by Grogar, she's - in some opinions - stupid, but with enough love she's on par with Celestia, even beating the Solar Alicorn. Yet she's intimidated by Grogar. Cozy Glow is a foal. She's a manipulative little (censored). Ironically, Cozy Glow seems to be the only one that isn't as intimidated by Grogar as Chrysalis or Tirek, not counting Sombra. Whether this is because of ignorance or her personality, I don't know, but despite that she doesn't seem to care about him. Sombra was defiant, but he didn't seek to go against Grogar. Instead, he wanted to prove that he could beat the ponies. He was defending his pride. None of the lackeys will stab Grogar in the back. You look at Nightmare Moon, you see someone that's prideful, jealous of others. She's often portrayed in fanfiction to be incapable of working with others, and incapable of taking orders. In Starlight's nightmare, Nightmare Moon and (Celestia-whose-name-I-forgot) fought, neither of them backing down. This is a lackey you'd have to watch. Nightmare Moon was more powerful than Celestia, and while it can be argued that Celestia didn't fight her A-game because it was her sister, I'd say that still says something that she couldn't really dodge or otherwise protect herself well against Nightmare's onslaught. That's a lackey that likely won't listen to orders, would rebel at every opportunity, and is more likely to stab you in the back than bring back a magical McGuffin that'd help you win. You wouldn't free someone like that, you'd keep them locked up or try to chain them to you, hold something over their heads.

I'm not completely refuting your theory, I'm just putting my thoughts out there. Why would Grogar help Nightmare Moon? I honestly wouldn't say she's a proper force of evil. Hell, in her timeline she wasn't even a tyrant. Intimidating, yes, and a little bit cold emotionally, but I wouldn't say a tyrant.

If anyone was wondering, on the mlp game, it says that Celestia is responsible for the Sun, Moon and Stars....

Yes and in Greek mythology the spirit of the sky’s physical form was killed banishing him to be the sky without having a way out just as you described separated from everything and everyone with no power over what happens under him especially when Zeus becomes god of the sky.

On rewatching this video... I want to say that even though grogar turned out to be discord all along, and so grogar wasn't the one to free nightmare moon...
There might've been a single most chaotic PONY, who released nightmare moon....

That pony is... Celestia!
Just think about it? Who was in control of the sun and moon AND the stars when Luna was banished?? Luna's responsibilities are explicitly said to include the raising of moon and stars! (and overlooking dreams of ponies but that ain't important) therefore.... Celestia.

She released her beloved sister. She had faith that twi could bring back Luna so... Similar to how Discord disguised as Grogar and brought villains together to boost twilight's confidence, Celestia too brought nightmare moon back, so twilight could begin her true journey on becoming an alicorn, and Tia could have her dear sister back.

I felt that the stars just have magical abilities such as refracting so much "magical" light into the moon that it opened a portal for Nightmare Moon to escape? But I do love this theory as it adds connections and relationships between Grogar and Equestria and the sisters 😺👍🏻

i think the stars are just balls of magic. luna is the princess of night so she just may have used her magic to slowly pull in the stars, used their magic, and escaped.

Episode 1. Story begins with Celestia took over responsibly of the sun and moon. Which means she has control of night and the stars and dreams. She put Luna in and took her out.

There is a flaw with the theory of how Grogar escaped. If almost all magic was sucked out of Equestria, then wouldn't Gusty's spell on mount everhoof have weakened as well? I myself didn't watch season 9, but from clips I saw, the wind didn't change too much. Someone tell me nicely if I'm wrong please, but I think Grogar escaped another way. No evidence proves this btw. There is a small chance that when Nightmare moon escaped, she felt bad for him, and brought him with her. He was weak so she could bring his spirit and place him back into equestria, during the time between season 1 and season 9, Grogar could have built back his strength and knowledge of how equestria was thriving. Being in the stars for SO long would have really impacted his co-ordination and knowledge of the lands. By season 9, he felt ready to take back equestria and he rose out of the shadows. It is highly unlikely, but still a cool concept.

Remember if Grogar was the starts and the spell that put him was super strong it couldn't have weekend too much and remember Discord was Grogar the whole time in that period so Grogar is still the stars so that means Grogar did free Nightmare Moon but also brought back Cozy Glow, T-reckand and Queen Chrysalis not only that i think Grogar also freed Discord too, when he saw the CMCs were fighting Discord put alittle magic that is alao enough for Grogar to free him i know this doesnt make much sence sorry

This needs revisiting as you could also see the stars as cosmos from the comics.

I just noticed something that isn't adding up, when we saw Twilights dress with star constellations the Ares had five stars, not four that broke out nightmare moon. Where did the fifth one go?

Y’know, you were asking what stars actually are in the mlp universe. I think I might have a small theory on that, which even has some (not much, but it’s still significant) proof.
In a lot of religions (and one particular book series that I like), there’s a belief that when someone passes away, their spirit becomes a star. I think that that might actually also be the case in mlp. Now I really only have one bit of proof, and tbh it’s pretty flimsy, but I haven’t watched every episode from season 5 onward, so there might be more. In the episode ‘Apple Family Reunion’, when (I believe) Granny Smith is talking about how everyone’ll be coming this time, you can quickly see two shooting stars flash across the sky when Applejack looks out the door. Now it’s pretty obvious that Applejack’s parents are dead even if it’s never been explicitly said in-show, and I’m pretty sure the entire fandom knows by now that those two stars were meant to represent Bright Mac and Pear Butter, but what if they weren’t just representations of those two? What if they actually were them? Showing their eldest daughter that they were still watching over her in the best way they could?
Now I’d kinda like to use an example from a completely different fandom to help explain a tie-in point. In the book series Warrior Cats, it’s made pretty clear that when dead cats go to Starclan (that series’ version of Heaven), they become visible in the sky as stars. They also have the ability to walk in living cats’ dreams, and also appear to Leaders and Medicine Cats (basically the ‘healers’ of that universe), and on very rare occasions also to normal cats. They can come for a variety of reasons, but there is always one thing that all Starclan cats have in common. They are always described as being vaguely transparent with stars in their fur. If I remember correctly, they are at some point also described as not leaving any pawprints in the dirt, and I’m pretty sure their voices also sound further away than they should compared to the distance between speaker and listener. Not only that, but when they appear to a Medicine Cat or something, their visit is always signified with a shooting star before they actually appear.
Basically what I’m trying to say is that I think that those two shooting stars were Applejack’s parents coming to make a very brief visit to their children, even if we didn’t see them on-screen.
Now I just thought of something and I have no idea if it’s even true, nor do I have any substantial evidence, but what if the Apple parents were actually visiting Apple Bloom that night? Apple Bloom seemed to have trouble waking up that morning, and while we could really just chalk that up to being woken up prematurely, maybe she didn’t want to wake up for the same reason that Spike didn’t want to in Winter Wrap Up? You made a video on Spike’s dream in that episode a long time ago, stating that maybe Spike was dreaming about his parents. What if the same was happening to Apple Bloom. I mean, we know from the episode ‘A Royal Problem’ that the Apple Parents have appeared in at least Applejack’s dreams (background during the scene where Celestia first goes into the dream world, one of the bubbles shows Applejack’s dream), so what’s to say that they haven’t in Apple Bloom’s? Again, not really substantial evidence, but evidence nonetheless.

What makes you think he got out at all? He may have aided nightmare moon, but it's never implied the real grogar is out again. Instead it's revealed to be discord. So while he could be watching, there isn't a reason to assume he managed to break free.

Does he have any more theories about this, incorporating what Lauren Faust implied about Celestia freeing Luna?

Did they forget that in the orginal series where this character CAME FROM, there were 'normal' Humans helping the ponies at that time? Apparently, they did.

In my theory, is tht since Grogars banishment took place before Equestria, the land was still young, and the ponies and monsters were still new.
Hear me out but i think Gusty's magic is a bit like the Weather Trio in Pokemon. During the early pre - Equestria days, magic was still primal so some unicorns there were able to use magic to its fullest.
Whenever smth is created during the early days of the world, its first stage is basically showing its true potential.
Example: natures way of showing its primal powers is basically the world overgrown by flora, like during the prehistoric era.
So, Gusty was able to use magic to its fullest when banishing Grogar and sealing the bell.

What if the Ursa major/Ursa minor was grogar attempt to create a moster strong enough to break the stars that imprisoned him. If grogar had enough magic to help free nightmare moon he could have enough magic to still make moster down in equestria. If he did make the Ursa major/minor he probably made other moster aswell mabey not to help him escape but to wreck havoc to all of equestrian (e.g the cockatrices, the minotaurs, bug bear and others) if he did make these creatures while still trapped in the stars it would explain why they are only combinations of two or more animals and not full out monsters he probably didnt have enough magic left in him to make any real moster after making the Ursa's. Grogar has had thousands and thousands of years to gather magic so it would not be foolish to believe that he mabey made more then one real moster mabey even a draconequus friend we know.

Yes but in School Raze Cozy Glow said, and I quote, "...and with the magic gone from Equestria, I'm not even sure the tree of harmony will be as helpful as it ones was..." She mentioned that but we know from past episodes that even if magic is lost it will always come to the rescue, in a way. So if what you said is true, that Gusty used a magic source more powerful than the elements, how could her spell have weakened?

Saw a comment that made me see something completely differently. The royal sisters + the elements stone prisoned discord for 1000 years, and the royal sisters + discord turned the villains to stone in S9.
Celestia says the reason discord broke free is because they were no longer connected to the elements, so what's to say that the sisters and discord spell won't last forever?
Although there's an argument to the fact that the elements turned discord to stone, so they must be more powerful, but I doubt that because of one important thing. Just because one of the attacks/uses of the elements turned Discord to stone, what's to say that he simply COULDN'T not turn to stone? How are you supposed to deflect an attack like that? What's to say it simply wouldn't work if discord was more powerful? These are the questions I need answered XD

i would guess the line about the star aiding in nightmare moon escape is a reference to a celestial alignment that weakened the banishment spells enough for nightmare moon to escape.

I disagree, the banishment to the stars/moon is a princess celestia thing. the ponies from the previous generation seemed to always send powerful enemies/weapons to different dimensions such as the "human" realm where star swirl sent the sirens & clover the clever sent the memory stone. Also there's the "limbo" where star swirl sent the pony of shadows. It seems other dimensions is where they like to send their equestria trash, why not grogar too.
Woah, I just realized that luna was sent to the moon via elements of harmony which didnt exist until after the pillars planted the seed of their elements or whatever. So, they couldnt have been used to send grogar to the stars. But then again the element kind of have a mind of their own, each time they are used something different results: luna was purified of her hatred, discord was turned to stone, sombra banished then transported then vaporized, and tereck was drained of his power. Why is the element's effects always on auto-shuffle.

I can only imagine the feeling of seeing grogar transform into discord. This theory is so good.

Celestia sent Nightmare moon to the moon, so couldn't Celestia set how long she would be up there. Also, the time when Nightmare moon returns is written in a history book. If I was Grogar, I wouldn't tell anyone when your demise was coming.

Another theory is maybe when celestia put Luna in the moon she put a time when she though Luna had enough, but misjudged the situation causing this all to happen then remembering a vision (like you said) talking about twilight and her friends fighting Luna making her nice Luna again

Theory: The MLP universe used to be inhabited by humans, but humanity slowly died out when an evil dictator discovered magic somewhere and released it. And if grow car couldn’t watch anything that was happening down below then he wouldn’t have seen nightmare moon get banished. So he wouldn’t know there is even somebody there to set free in the first place. Which means this theory is wrong. Which brings back the question how did nightmare moon be freed?

That's the thing, because Discord was pretending to be Grogar, Grogar would still just be a constellation if that theory were canon. Which is definitely going to be my head-canon from now on ^^

Grogar's real first appearance was in MLP G1 back in the 90's which means MLP G4 is referencing the older generations

Actually the Cutie Mark Crusaders didn't cause Discord to be able to break free from his banishment.
Celestia states that it was because she and Luna who banished Discord using the Elements were no longer connected to the Elements anymore, and that unravelled the banishment.
But because of the timeline, maybe they did have a part in his escape, but their hijinks at his statue wasn't really the main cause of Discord's escape.

Besides that though, I like the idea that Grogar has just been helping out fellow villains all this time, I mean, that's kinda what he's doing so it fits. Loved the theory!

If this theory is true, then does that mean all constellations are different villains and potentially dangerous creatures that have been banished to the sky, or at least the Zodiac/most popular (or most known) constellations? If so, might they show up later in future seasons or even future generations of mlp? And 2. A little off topic, but after his bell was retrieved, how could grogar not notice it's presence? It could be that this is true but since Luna controls night could mean that she also controls EVERYTHING IN night as well including you guessed it stars,hence nightmare moon being Luna could use some of her power that is left to use the stars to bail herself out of the moon. I think Gusty the great is part Kirin and part unicorn. Think about it. if the combined magic of three types of ponies is, like,super powerful, think of how much magic something would be if it was two types of species.

Ok but why didnt Groagar escape when Tirek sucked magic out of Equestria? Tirek did it too and he was so much cooler then Cozy. I stand by that Groagar never escaped and what we see of him in season 9 is all Discord, even though i hated this twist from the bottom of my heart. I was such a g1 fan and i was excited to see Groagar and then they just ruined both my favourite villain from g1 and my favourite villain from g4. God, show writers, one has to have a talent to ruin all of my childhood dreams in one episode.

My theory is that luna broke herself out of prison. Because in the diary of the two sisters starswirl tried to teach luna to move the stars. To touch up, I think when celestia banned luna she took away luna's power over the moon as she may still cause chaos. But when Luna's banishing spell ended, she used the spell break herself out. Of course, brony's theory about Grogar is very convincing, on twilight's dress, the ram constellation has FIVE stars, not FOUR! (Btw I'm not hating, I'm just saying my own ideas)

Cozy becomes an alicorn tirek just grows in my opinion and chrysalis gets armour and new powers. The bell can be used to take power or give power. They use the bell on discord stripping him of his form of grogar turing him back to himself. He now has to run away on his own feet. They try to give his power to cozy but it doesnt work so they keep it in the bell. They actually take over eqestria by taking out everyone that could stand a threat besides the crystal empire. Then at the very end twilight uses the past, present, and future ponies/creatures that hold the power of friendship connected to the tree to defeat the villains. At the end stripped of their power celestia luna and discord whisper about something then turn them to stone just like discord. The last episode will not be spoiled here tho that is never to be done it would be evil. Lets just say it ends up in the future a little confusing i know but after watching you will understand.
