Discord=Star Swirl in "Three's a Crowd"

I know this video was YEARS ago and I haven’t watched all of your videos (yet) so it might have already been addressed, but hear me out: when twilight casts the spell in Magical Mystery Cure, it switched her friends’ destinies. She was able to remind them who they were meant to be by having them do what they were always supposed to. What if that happened to the pillars when Starswirl initially created the spell as well? And he had to do that with them as well but he never made the connection. Just a random thought

Hmm interesting. The "real reason" you're proposing Discord did what he did is certainly more concrete than the one we got. However, Discord looked quite grumpy when Cadence reassured Twilight in the end, so I think he genuinely wanted to pose a test to Twilight.

And what could Twilight possibly discover about Discord in that exhibition? She has studied countless hours on Star Swirl the Bearded already, no doubt. If there was any dark secret to uncover about him or any connection to make she would have done so already... Are the writers really capable of keeping Discord's "true identity" a secret all throughout since Luna Eclipsed?

Oh, and I believe that one of the reasons many fans get the impression that Star Swirl and Discord are one and the same is Star Swirl's fan interpretation (at 0:12), where he appears to be gray and tenacious much like Discord himself. But now for the first time we have a clue about what Star Swirl really looked like; according to the poster at 1:32 , he was pure white. This doesn't exactly disprove the theory, but it's definitely a curious detail to take into account.

I still agree with this fan theory. I mean, there's a lot of stuff that tries to disprove it, but it can be easily countered.

For example, John DeLancie (I hope I spelled his name right) saying he didn't know who Star Swirl was. Let's be honest, he could have been either saying the truth OR he could have been lying to keep spoilers a secret. Saying out and loud that Star Swirl is Discord would be really heavy-handed on the spoilers, and something like that is much better kept as a surprise.

When Tirek asked about Discord being free of his stone prison, he could have easily referred to the SECOND time he was imprisoned. This fits with the timeline, since in S2 Tirek was already out and about, roaming Equestria.

The comics issue can be easily disregarded. They're endorsed by Hasbro, sure, but many of the stories that happen there clash with the canon of the show. I recall reading that they were made by fans, for fans, so if this is correct then that disproves their canonicity.

And as for the Diary of the Two Princesses, Star Swirl could have easily taught the two princesses before the whole reign of Discord happened, since they already had their cutie marks when confronting Discord. Same with his friendship with Scorpan.

Yeah I won't lie the theory is a bit farfetched sometimes, but let's be honest, there really isn't nothing in canon that disproves it wholly.

Mlp comic issue #17, starswirl was around during the time after discord was turned into stone. It seems starswirl and discord are not one and the same after all.

I have a theory of my own to share here and now , and it goes like this:
What if Starswirl the Bearded wasn't just ANY unicorn?
We all know that he was a great unicorn who helped develop alot of the magic in equestria's early days.  We also known that he lived BEFORE celestia and luna.
As far as alot of ponies in equestria can tell he's a respected unicorn. My theory (or conspiration...you choose) is that Starswirl the Bearded fell in love with Celestia (or Luna...your choice).
However for unknown reasons (it's just a suggestion that this happened) Celestia (or Luna) rejected Star Swirl's proposition[Maybe because they felt that they were more responsible for the balance of Equestria more]. That made him be angry at the Two Sisters (or maybe just Celestia/Luna). Let's say that one night he tried to talk to Celestia (or Luna...or the two together) and he was VERY desperate to get Celestia (or Luna...your pick again) to the point where he was about to unleash something terrible only to get what he wanted. Maybe that's how Starswirl vanished and turned to either one of the following two things : either THE SHADOW PONY or Discord [however that last WINK of Discord toward Celestia in Twilight's Kingdom Part 2 was kinda suspicious]. We all know that Celestia and luna have dark secrets of their own too so it wouldn't surprise me that they told nopony about this so that he can be remembered with his good deeds?

I highly doubted that Discord had any relation to Star Swirl, let alone
be Star Swirl at first. I even believed this before the Season 4
finale. I honestly believe Discord and Star Swirl are two completely
different individuals.

I like this theory, but the season 4 finale generally disproves it. Discord and Tirek address each other as if they had previously met or at least familiar with each other by reputation. Tirek is definitely aware of Discord being turned to stone. The Sisters were ruling Equestria at the time of Tirek's and Scorpan's arrival. The flashback in part two seems to indicate that the pony befriended by scorpan seems to be starswirl, although, that admittedly would probably make starswirl fairly old.

I still don't see how a simple change of destiny could corrupt ones physical form so much. There is no other instance of ones physical from being drastically changed other than Luna to Nightmare Moon. But even thats not very drastic

I think Twilight's Kingdom disproved the theory completely. Scorpan knew Star Swirl when he and Tirek were in Equestria, but when Tirek escapes from Tartarus, he knows who Discord is an recognises him instantly, probably because he read about him somewhere before he was banished. This means Discord had to have been turned to stone BEFORE Tirek and Scorpan came to Equestria, but Star Swirl is still around at that time, meaning Discord can't possibly be him

I believe that Star Swirl wanted to create new magic like any other pony with infinite knowledge would do. Experimented on different kind of spells along the side discovering different beings on their planet. And in order to interact with those other beings he tries to become them (like to solve problems that occurred during that time but in order to understand that one must be like them. Try to create harmony but in order to do so, they need to know how it feels like to be them). To be in their shoes, per se. And with magic there comes a time where you make mistakes. As a result, Discord was formed. A harmless spell to help him create harmony ended up creative chaos and discord, thus Discord.

The tent behind the candle could have given hints about him becoming discord, like a changeling spell, and so he had to stop twilight from connecting the thing with the thing.

I think that these theories are really cool, and believable, but I don't know if mlp is the kind of show to throw in conspiracies like that

I disagree becuase tireck knew about star swirl and discord sepretly second star swirl found the elements of harmony and if he knew they might defight him then why wouldn't he just cast a spell so they can't

There was a head cannon I watched and it was that star swirl was taken out of time by discord and he didnt age he couldn't get out he just was able to watch and with the shadow pony thing maybe being star swirl it makes complete sense i litterly think its true maybe he was watching as strange ponies entered the princess's castle and he wasn't pleased and he could only appear as a shadow if you could will you do a response to this comment I would like to know you thoughts

Wasn't starswirl meant to be celestia's student at one point? If so, maybe he was destined to attempt to become an alicorn like twilight, but becaue he had no friends, and didnt understand friendship, when he cast the spell it just mixed up all his memories and body (rather than that of his friends) into an unrecognizable form. Like how  twilight's friends had confused memories of who they were perhaps this was also true for starswirl/discord and he could no longer remember himself. Maybe this could also suggest that twilight could have failed the test and turned into a horrific chimera too XD

maybe starswirl didn't become discord, discord could be a second form for starswirl created by some messed up spell. this would mean that starswirl only took the form of discord around a select few. until his starswirl side perished because his discord form wanted power starswirl prevented him from having. discord kills him and sets out to obtain equestria. this could mean that even though discord was evil he was still apart of starswirl giving him a warmspot for fluttershy and friendship moments with the mane six . starswirl didn't understand friendship, maybe he longed for it so much that when discord see certain moments of friendship he becomes nice . of course this is after his some what reform revives a small price of starswirl

 well the pitchers of Star Swirl i've seen so far kinda douse make it look like it could be true by the bread the eye brow the color of his heed, but in the season 4 season finale they bring Star Swirl into it when Tirek first time came and that made me wounder was that before or after Discord was taken down the first time be for tirek or after??? because if tirek was before discord it then it could be so but if tirek came after discord then it can't be true

Something just came to me. In hearths warming eve, that say that it was long before the rule of Celestia, and that clover the clever was a student of starswirl the bearded. However, in magical mystery cure, Celestia says that Starswirl was her student... How does that work?? Do you think you could do a video analyzing this?

I agree with your theory. In the episode 7 of season 5 discord was gonna send tree hugger to a different dimension. In the second movie of equestria girls it said starswirled banished the sirens to a different dimension.

I really like the story about Discord being starswirl but I can't aggree. Celestia told us that Discord is the spirit of Chaos and I don't really see the conecion of him being starswirl.

In that episode of disharmony I play a my little pony game and in the ever free Forest I can see the necklaces and the crown in some parts of the trees in the exact shape of the triangle or circle of the shape that they are held in.

And when Discord started coming to Ponyville, he didn't know how to be nice. Fluttershy taught him to be nice. So Star Swirl would want to be friends with Fluttershy!!

I do think that discord is indeed star swirl , why?
Well...if you look closely at star swirl and discord,what I observed is that both of them have white,bushy eyebrows and beards.coincidence? too coincidental?
Secondly,like a lot of people said,star swirl might have wanted to be the greatest unicorn in equestria, probably even wanting to rule equestria as well,after all,he is known for his incredible magic.However,when two stronger ponies,alicorns,celestia and Luna came to equestria,it was pretty obvious that they are the next rulers,thus,star swirl might have gotten jealous of their power,using everything he can,he might have created a spell to supposedly send celestia and Luna to a different dimension or smth (as seen in make friends and keep discord,or smth else I forgot) ,but it backfired and instead transformed him into a different creature,well,discord.
Thirdly,who knows,starswirl might not be just a great unicorn,he might as well be a great unicorn of chaos,like discord :D Okay okay too little evidence is provided there.
Fourthly,magical mystery cure,that spell he wrote,he wrote it in the point of view of a pony who doesn't have friends,"the marks of one's destiny singled out alone,fulfilled".That could refer to him,he certainly didn't know the magic of friendship like twilight does,so he probably didn't experience friendship.He most likely was trying to point out that one's destiny,his destiny will be singled out from the other ponies in equestria and will be fulfilled (etc ruling equestria,being the hero,saving equestria) who knows?

What if Star Sworld helped Celestia and Luna defeat discord? In any flashback, we haven't heard his voice, at all so we don't know if he is! But how did Star Sworld turn evil? Discord was evil and, Star Sworld was ever so close to the Princesses.

Who else is really freaking excited to see if Star Swirl is the focus of season six?

I think Discord is Star Swirl because if you look at the two side by side and think about both they have many similarities like they both have the same color coat but for discord its only his head coat, same eyebrows, they both have beards, and they are both extremely powerful they can both open portals into other dimensions. That is all the evidence I have I don't know about you but for me this makes since.

Discord Cn't be Star Swirl cause' Starswirl helped tireks brother ( who I forgot his name) see that he could be good and Tirek was sent to a far away jail but in that time Tirek knew who discord was cause' in episode Twilights kindgdom Tirek knew who Discord was and if Discord was Starswirl Tirek would have not known who he was.

This sadly can be proved wrong because in season 7 star swirl actually appears officially stating your theory, wrong. (Im sorry if it sounds mean this was probably made a long time ago)

2 things, one discord has the ability to go across dimensions.... for example the sock puppet dimension. and had a friend called the smooze, so really he had a "friend" and starswirl also has a friend of what ever tireks brother is... Discord would have to know who tirek is in order to be friends with tireks brother...

in MLP EG Rainbow  Rocks   there were 3 sirens that were  making  chaos  and Star swirl banished them to EG World. so in time line there was Chaos before Discord came to be. just watch the movie.

My theory is that their was an alacorn named umbra. OK I think star swerl used dark magic to turn himself to an alacorn and used the name umbra then a few days later he turned himself in to a choes bringer witch might very well be Discord

End of season 4: He made friends with a non-pony (I forgot Tirek's brother's name). Make up your mind Hasbro! BTW this means Discord isn't Starswirl because he said he never really had a friend. Unless he means after he became a draconiquus.

i have a short theory about starswirl for the people who's favorite pony is starswirl you arent gonna like it so dont read it...STARSWIRL IS EVIL!why would he create that spell if he was good?and why would he wanna do this to other pony's ?and why would he think that it would work if it would only work when he needed relationships?

What if a tyrant tried to take over Equestria, and the mane 6 were not enough. what if the tyrant took all 6, and Discord tried to ignore them, but when he "mystically" hears Fluttershy's cries, he springs to action, defeats the tyrant, knocking himself out in the process. suddenly the elements all start glowing, raising the confused ponies, their magic all comes together on Discords limp body, raising him, and FLASH, you see a young Starswirl the Bearded laying down in his place. All the ponies gather to see what he's become, when he wakes up, he sees everyone staring at him, then he notices he's changed.

Going with the theory provided, I'd say when he performed the spell, it not only changed his body, but his magic too, causing the confusing magic mix-ups (aka chocolate milk rain, cotton candy clouds... ect). while unable to properly create magic anymore, he became discouraged and gave up trying to break the curse. (This also could explain the confussion as to how much power he actually has, because the truth is, it changes constantly, so really, it depends).

However, when he performed the act of sacrificing one's self for another (or in this case, 6 others), he showed the greatest act of kindness there is to show, thus, breaking the spell & showing his true self again.

none is more surprised then Fluttershy, the two get to know each other again, then after a time of courtship (i think Fluttershy would appritiate that) Discord... I mean, Starswirl, purposes marriage.

Now note, I only just came up with this on the fly, it's just an idea... but you gotta admit, in the words of Rainbow Dash, "That would be totally AWESOME!"

I completely agree with your theory. But i have one thing to add. I remember twilight saying that starswirl was "the father of the amniomorphic spell" and "the most important conjurer of the pre-classical era" so there are to words that pop out conjurer and amniomorphic. We should all know what conjurer means but what of amniomorphic. If we spit it in two we have amnio and morphic. I cannot find out what amnio exactly means but it sounds close to animal and morphic or morph means to change so animal change. So what if when he was trying to make that last spell he accidentally morphed him self with other animals that he conjured up. Which also could have change his state of mind like it did with twilight's friends. Also In Friendship is Magic Issue #17, Princess Luna describes Star Swirl as having a similar personality to Pinkie pie. Which explains discord's personality.

What if Discord was all ways a dracqoniquis and he grew up with a dracqoniquis mom and dad? There could have been a few families of the same kind and they lived in some far away land, but one day... say the dracqoniquis kind wanted more land and there was a war. It could have been the war that luna and celestias parents were killed in, along with all of the dracqoniqis kind? Discord could have ran away when the war started, because, since he was very young, he would have been terrifyed. Then, lets say a month later, when Discord had been living on cotton candy and chocolate milk, he decided to go look for his parents, not knowing they were dead. At the same time, Celestia and Luna werer searching for there perants, and the young princesses met Discord. They explained that they were looking for there perants, and quickly befriended him. They played togeter every day, eating Discords cotton candy and drinking chocolate milk, until the two sisters wanted to claim there royal duties, and help the other ponies. Of corse, Discord still wanted to play.
Weeks later, the sisters had claimed there royal duties, and never played with Discord. He found it very funny if he played pranks on the two princesses, or the royal gurds. Celestia and luna tried to stop him, as his pranks were getting more dangerous. It was then that Discord saw his true nature, the bringer of CHAOS. The sisters then had to use the elemants of harmony to turn him to stone.

ooook, listen up. here is my theory. discord is NOT starswirl the bearded, but rather his son? it sounds crazy but I can prove it. yes the timeline is correct but it proves that starswirl disappeared AFTER discord was turned to stone. so here's wat I think, starswirl used the spell he created to see wat would happen. surrounded by his items he has collected from the past, a snake tail, bat wing, pegusus wing, egale claw, his own DNA, a sharp yellow tooth, a lions paw, a random horn, a deer's antler, a zebras mane, and a deer leg, they mix together to. create discord. starswirl tries to take care of him but is quickly shunned by his son. his son causes chaos and is turned to stone. starswirl lives a while longer, but runs off to try and hide wat he had done. its only a theory but I also think that's y discord kept twi and cadence away from the fair. to keep his father a secret.😐

By the time I'm writing this comment season eight has already come out, so discord isn't starswirl the other pillars and him they sacrificed themselves to banish the pony of shadows

I do think that Discord is StarSwirl the bearded. Because on Season 4 Three's a crowd Discord is sick the day the StarSwirl the bearded exhibit is open. Coincidence? No.

I wonder how StarSwirl turned to Discord. Here's my theory(s). StarSwirl was trying a spell that changes your form like Changelings. But it backfired causing him to not turn into the pony he desired, but his opposite self. Turning him into Discord.

Another theory is that StarSwirl had the alicorn amulet and used spells he couldn't handle. Then one night he tried to overrule Celestia and Luna, but they used a spell to alter the target. Himself. The spell changed as well turning him to Discord.

"From one to another, another to one, a mark of ones destiny, singled out alone fulfilled." This is another theory. StarSwirl performed that spell. But he didn't have any pony to cast the spell on. So it altered his form turning him to Discord.

Those are my theorys.
