My experience with the Pimax as similar, but the 60hz is not the only downside it also have no depth, you can look around but not move you head closer, leaning ect ect. Can cause nausia in some VR games i tried.
Only the rotational movement, no 6DoF? That's a shame, a dealbreaker for me. Maybe I could combine the 3 point LED model I cobbled together for flight sims to get the leaning in as well. I have to do some research.
Just to give everyone in this thread a heads up, if you don't mind dropping £100, there's a product called NoloVR that brings 6DoF movement and controllers that work the same as the VIVE's, the only downside is that it's currently 180 degrees infront, which is suitable for most games however!
Actually, that is not entirely accurate. While it may not be 6dof, there is depth. Ill refer you to Galaxy VR for Cardboard: while you are seated in the cockpit, you can move your head slightly and that lets you to look around the edge of the window allowing you to see more of the engine, for example. It is a mischaracterization to say that there is no depth. It implies that the environment is static, when its not...
Even as a Vive owner, I can only be excited by progress like this. I want to see wider adoption of VR, and lower barriers to entry will benefit everyone. VR is amazing and I can't wait to see what talented developers will bring with a wider audience.
Phillip! I want to say i loved this review! It's something different that appeals to me as i own a vive. I also own a pimax because i wanted to check out the 4k. I do want to tell you though, compared to "real vr" like oculus and vive pimax does not even compare! The oculus and vive have roomscale tracking which means you can move your head not just 360 degrees but you can move in, move out, take a few steps over to the side, it doesn't sound like much but that completes the whole experience! I highly suggest you go out and demo oculus vive, or even playstation vr just to see the in and out tracking (even though the playstation vr tracking is terrible). I also wanted to say that the screen on the pimax is, good in certain areas, like the screen door effect which is good but compared to any other major vr headset it's very lacking. These were just my thoughts and It seemed like you liked vr and i highly suggest you go check out real vr at like bestbuy or the microsoft store or something because in all honosty the pimax feels like a VERY cheap knock off with %25 of the actual features of real headsets. I also want to say, for not having a headset to compare the pimax to, you reviwed this like REALLY well.
Excellent review. It's interesting to see how decent this device compares to mainstream counterparts. Although at the time of leaving this comment, the Rift doesn't cost much more, but still it's nice to see cheaper alternatives. $800 for the Vive was too much for me to consider it seriously, but in the $400 range I'm much more likely to take the plunge (and I have).
i don't know about that. pretty soon, all you'll need for that is your phone. new android devices are all going to ship with gearvr grade vr-compatible motion tracking, so all you'll need for steam VR is a viable wireless connection to a pc, which is also coming with the new 10gbps wifi spec, and a middleware like riftcat, which is already available and works with any gyro-equipped phone (though it kinda sucks because the sensors are laggy in current phones).
so in a couple of years at worst, you won't actually have to buy almost anything to experience entry-level vr.
Exactly...people are spending a shitload of money on products that are still at an infancy level with no major titles to play on....I say why rush it...enjoy your ps4/xbox/pc games without vr for now and instead of paying a shitload of money for a test-like head-set use the money to buy a better pc/screen/graphics card....VR can wait...enjoy the technologies we have mastered at their prime and in a couple of years when the newer versions of the headsets are released with hundreds of complete compatible games and much more affordable consumer-level prices, then you can buy them and enjoy the new-age of gaming. But for the time being, VR is not worth the trouble.
Zero Budget Noob Hundreds of complete compatible games? Who will make them if you're putting people off VR? There will be no newer versions of headsets and VR is dead in the water if no one takes a chance on the tech, provided they have the means, of course.
VR is still at its testing stage...like it or not, until the newer versions of the headset are out with software improvements and more affordable prices it will not gain mass-consumer status. I'm pretty sure the manufacturers know that and as a consumer myself I won't waste close to a thousand dollars on a half-finished product with a crapload of mini-games. I'm pretty sure tens of thousands share the same concerns. In half a decade or so you'll see millions flocking to the stores for the much improved vr headsets and their advanced improvements...but today? Don't bet on it. And don't worry about vr "shutting down" because of low sales, its way past that point. The next step is improvement and availability for the standard consumer, and like it or not, it will take more than a year or 2 to accomplish that.
You say that as if there were no big titles that had support for VR. Arma 2 and Arma 3 both have full VR support and there's a complete port of HL1 for Android also with VR support. We're not as much of a long way from VR being a normal thing as you may think. Companies just have to find a way to make cheaper systems to make it more available for the everyday game consumer. My idea for position tracking, although not perfect and probably laggy, would certainly work. Sensor fusion methods would kill any innaccuracy on the prediction, too, so that would probably not be a problem.
And that would take less than half a decade to perfect? The games you mentioned "support vr" and were not exclusively made for vr. All you say after that I completely agree with...and that is exactly why as I say over and over again RIGHT NOW, as in this year(and the next) VR is NOT worth it.
I don't know how you can say that, although I will admit the possibility of an exclusively VR game being in any way successful is extremely unlikely, full VR support is as good as it gets, as mouse + keyboard is still the most common way to play games, and will be for a couple of decades, and because supporting more than one input pattern is THE way to go.
When most games have VR exclusivity, it won't be a sign of an industry evolving, but rather of an industry abandoning an entire market and leaving behind it's greatest strength, and that would be detrimental for the gaming industry overall. So I'd say VR support is as far as any game should go, not exclusivity.
Budget Noob--The problem is once you actually play your favourite game in VR, YOU CAN'T GO BACK!...even with it's present res issues and high cost! I used to play elite dangerous in normal flat-screen but then tried playing it at friends house in VR and now I spent $$$ to get VR and no regrets! Before I just play a game, now I am IN a game IN my very own spaceship! Just being honest here and not trying to sell anything.
They could just give you a "cardboard vr" 6-dof (inside-outside tracking) headset, 3-dof controller and no headphones, and still give it for 40 dollars
I owned a Pimax 4k VR for 5 months now. It is generally a great product. I never really had problems with it other than getting the software to work well with it. I had to downgrade to an older version and I use that to hook it up with Steam VR. (I don't use the crappy things that come with the Piplay program)
I'm amazed by how far we've come in 5 years. The fact the quest 2 beats all these headsets while being a mobile headset is just incredible. Looking forward to what 2027 has to offer for VR now!
I am sure that you could partially solve the lack of no motion tracking device with the Steam Controler, use the gyro for turning around when you are standing and rest of the controller like a normal controller. You would just enable the gyro to be always ON and act like a mouse, so when you would physically turn around when standing and hold the controller in front of you then you would turn around in the game as well. Actually, when I tried HTC Vive my first impression of the controllers was that they are just left and a right half of the Steam Controller, just enhanced a bit to allow you to control each hand on its own which is not very possible with the Steam Controller (maybe with a lot of thinking and tinkering you could do it but it still wouldn't be spot on).
I'd guess that VR could work well for first-person vehicle-based games, as you wouldn't have to walk around the room, and you would also be able to use regular controllers.
Hey Phillip, I like the video and I'm glad you have been able to try some VR, but please try the Vive (or oculus) sometime. The PiMax lacks positional tracking, and it's hard to overstate how important this is.
It was best headset for ED/flight/race sims (with Nolo positional tracking) until now that 5K+/8K are out. It still has better perceived resolution and SDE than 8K.
When I was watching people playing the new resident evil on psvr, they seem to have implemented a setting to help with the motion sickness when you move your field of view with the controller. It seemed odd at first, but what it seems to do is make the motion jittery and less smooth, when you use the controller, and that apparently helps. Long story short, I think getting motion sick when you control your fov with the controller is an issue faced by everyone...
Nice review, tho it's no longer a fraction the price of an oculus which gives you much more functionality. You can get the oculus along with the two hand touch controls on special now for $399, even when it goes off special it's $499 which is still a better value to get over the Primax 4K. This review does get me excited for the next revision of the oculus or the vive which are both expected to have much higher resolution as well as being fully wireless.
For the uploader: You can use the "Motion" Sensor on your vr and you wont need any controller. Really nice and easy to install, just glue it on the device. Maybe you can also solder it to the usb cable?
man, but I love the clean, almost wireless look of it. Makes it look definitely like the future, and the smooth look makes this look better than the vive in my opinion. Not to say the thing itself is better, the vive is way better than Oculus and pi.
for the vive you are paying for the lighthouse trackig with room scale and hand controls, it looked like the pi would use a gyroscope which does not have as good tracking as vive. one of the coolest and most attractive parts of the other vr headsets is that you can actually move around and immerse yourself in the world
Hopefully the Pimax 8k version will have a 4k upscaling thing for games and native 8k for movies, because if so would be a great content consuming device
now that Vive and Rift are widely available, it's a fundamental problem with the review not to be able to compare purely in technical terms.
edit: also, it needs to be said that pi max is trading more off the 4k nature of its display, rather than any genuine competing features of its rivals. Without comparison, it's a massive call to say you get "80% of the performance for 50% of the cost"
I guess you could try to lower the resolution which should allow you to increase the refresh rate. Back when I used to play GO seriously I would run it at 4:3 stretched not because I liked it, but because my LCD was able to run at 75Hz at a low resolution and it felt a lot better. I hope this helps.
If this thing would have roomscale VR with motion controllers like in the upcoming 8k version, then it would be the VR headset of my choice, but i think i still gonna wait. The 60Hz display is also kind of a deal breaker for me, but if its really not as big of a deal then i maybe i give it a chance at some point. I like the price they are going for, its actually how i expected the Vive and Oculus would have cost befor they announced their price for the consumer versions. Lets see what they are doing next, this gets me excited for VR again!
the only thing that is a let down for my vive is the resolution. I also have Google daydream with a Google pixel XL which had a resolution of 2560x1440 and after comparing the two it's definitely noticeable.
not having basestations, controllers and the worse refresh rate makes the price seem a bit overpriced... if you take the 700€ of the vive and then remove 240€ for the basestations and 200€ for the controllers (in store prices -150€ because they probably don't cost that much too make) you get about 260 € for the headset... now lets compare that to 300£ and you see wich one of them really is cheaper... (yes it does have a higher resolution display but that is balanced out by the lower framerate)
Another alternative that is 1:1 to vive/oculus which is somewhat cheaper is the razer hdk2 (it's a opensource devkit, Seated experience only or similair movement tracking like the Oculus DK2 and like the pimax no hand tracking devices, people are mentioning that you are able to hook up a kinect for room tracking and or a playstation eye camera with controller to also have motion controllers). If you think of getting a Vive or Oculus: The vive has better movement tracking up to 7.5 meters, oculus does so in 2,5 to 3m sideways and 1 to 2 meters forward/backward motion. (unless you buy more tracking stations). The vive has some weird cirular lenses (likely to prevent the screendoor effect a bit but you do notice these ingame after a while)... the visuals are much better on the oculus, and because of the soft housing it's allot lighter.
Btw: Any game that has OpenVR support can run most if not any vr-system in some matter.
Great video, and good to see someone else trying to push the technology forward. Now, what is that gorgeous keyboard and where can I get it? I have been looking for something exactly like that for ages.

There is also OSVR HDK 2.0. It's great to almost the same price.
Only question I got is if it will work in 3 months, would be cool if you could make a new video about it in some time, just to update us about how it "ages" :)
Thank you very much for your review. I've been searching for a headset that would work for my needs in viewing 360º live streaming video from a set of mini BlackMagic cameras shooting 4k at 60fps. I plan to send a ROV fitted with a high end 360º camera system to explore the ocean animals under the mini sailing cruise ships. I didn't need any head tracking systems like in the Vive or Sony products. I just wanted to bring the diving experience to people who for one reason or another are unable to dive in cold Alaskan waters.
Great video, very informative and entertaining! I particularly like the bits of you tripping and walking into things on the hoe! I have a mate in Plymouth with an Oculus CV1 and the controllers, if you wanted to do a comparison...
11:50 , you can use the nolo vr addon to get hands. It only has one base station, and costs about $100, but there are plenty of software workarounds that have been made, and have proven to work great. But if you are really on a budget, get a windows mr headset($200~$400), which has a bunch of sensors in the headset that track your head, and the controllers very well, and allow for a much bigger play space.
Does it have room scale? does it have specific controllers? Does it have guaranteed compatibility with steam games? Can you integrate real objects into the vr world? I want my Vive
I have read your Review as well as watching this video. Great amount of information. The one question that I have is that it says that the device is 110 FOV But I'm guessing its more around the 75 mark from what I have read. I am currently using F/W 1.0.0.248 As no other F/W seams to detect my device. I have a binocular effect which is quite discouraging, Annoying & is really my only issue. Please bare in mind that if I press the headset onto my face hard it gets slightly better but obviously I cant use it like this:( People in the forums are saying the opposite like to add 1cm of padding. I have tried all the IPD adjustment settings from 50-75 which seams to make no difference at all. I love the headset and like I say this is my only issue. Any way around this would be great if you have found anything out in the time you have had yours please let me know.

This is the first time ive seen 4K and "Budget" in the same sentence although it isnt really 4K which makes a lot more sense.
Just a heads up about the joystick turning sickness, make sure you're using snap turn. As someone who is both a VR enthusiast, and someone who gets motions sickness easily, its a godsend
This video shows you walking around outside wearing the headset. Does that mean that this has mobile and AR functions. That makes this pretty impressive.
here's a question for ya, do you think if you used trackir along with the Pimax that you'd be able to to get that head movement while looking around? if you don't know trackir uses IR leds to track headmovement in simulation games truck simulator and space shooters like elite dangerous
For $400, OSVR HDK v2 is almost certainly a better option. 90hz, 2160x1200, and ir tracking. 60hz with gyroscope doesn't sound optimal. The main market for VR right now is simulators (racing and flight). The extra 30hz would definitely help with motion sickness. I heard that the guys at Sony tried driveclub PS4 with psvr (60hz) and got motion sick after 30mph. I am sure you could get used to it, but I have a hard time making an argument for the pimax when the OSVR is only $400 in the US.
60hz is a killer. 90hz is the bare minimum to do what PSVR, Oculus and Vive are doing. Basically this is a completely different kind of product from the main three VR headsets.
There's a cheaper one I plan to try out myself. That's been getting good reviews. But not as high quality. That's suppose to work about the same way with tracking. (Seriously some people are using Pimax software with it apparently).
8:31 no you will get sick by moving around in same manner, on a Vive/Oculus. It is simply the "drifting" movement that makes you sick. This is why most VR experiences uses teleportation to move you around in larger spaces. Source: I own a Vive myself
What you were saying about the nausea, apparently it's more likely to happen if you're very resistant to "travel sickness". Something about your body telling your brain that you're moving vs your brain telling your body that you're moving. I experienced it while trying out HL2 in VR on a rift DK2, since I always got nauseous about halfway through a level, I could never really finish it, but it was a pretty great demonstration of what's to come. If you haven't tried HL2 in VR, I'd recommend it, since the models look to have a higher polygon count than the demos.
Gearbest is an awful site. Google their reputation if you don't believe me. You will probably get what you ordered, but any support beyond that is impossible. When I tried to return a DOA tablet, they wanted me to ship it to a warehouse in China before they sent out a replacement, and when I told shipping would cost me 130$ they basically said that's my problem, not theirs. Any return/replacement polices they have are pretty much a scam, and when you're ordering cheap Chinese brands that's not something you want.
Weird, my experience is the opposite, I once made a mistake within my delivery address, but with some pushing and pulling I got it fully refunded (minus shipping costs), which they didn't have to, as their terms and conditions states that they don't have to do anything if you, the customer make a stupid mistake as filling in the form wrong... though, the product I ordered was about 40 dollars, so not that expensive. If gearbest is still a no go, I would also recommend banggood. When the product I ordered there broke, I got a new one and I didn't have to ship back the faulty product (shipping costs where to high for that, which according to their policy they would have to pay if their product is faulty). I only had to pay the shipping costs for the new product, which isn't much, if you live in The Netherlands. Maybe I just got lucky ;)
Quick question, though I might be several months too late to ask it... Around 16:16 in this video, how scary was it to walk into that thing when basically blindfolded?
is Pimax still the best choice? I'm trying to save up for VR and I want to avoid the screendoor effect, and I'd like the highest possible FOV available. what would you recommend? also, I love your channel, subbed.
@the dark bun are you being serious? The half life series is always been about innovation game mechanics, so vr is a logical step to take in order to achieve this
I think if you had a Rift+Touch or Vive to compare it to you'd be a lot more negative. With the Windows Holographic headsets coming, I wouldn't recommend this.
The Pimax's 60hz refresh rate puts it more in line with phone based solutions like Daydream or GearVR. It uses an LCD instead of an OLED, so it has higher latency and can't do low persistence (similar to Lightboost/blur reduction on a monitor, it's why you saw ghosting). These can make some people sick, and the phones even beat it here.
Not having controllers is a big problem. Tracked motion controllers (like Vive or Touch) are the major focus for VR content. As you mentioned, the headset isn't tracked in 3D space, so you can only look around, and not move your head's position.
The only advantage this has over the Rift/Vive is the higher resolution. If you don't want to spend the extra money, Microsoft's Windows Holographic partner headsets are coming. They all have positional head tracking, and will likely have motion controllers as well. Lenovo is making one for about the same price as this, and it has low persistence 1440x1440 OLED displays for each eye.
For me VR w/o being able to orbit-look at an object is out of the question, it's not VR, it's just a bigger display. So I personally wouldn't spend that much money on an almost no-name motorcycle - I would pay double, maybe 4x for a proper, established, sports car.
Well if it was cheaper (considering no IR sensors to track your body movement AND no wireless controllers for it) i would consider to buy it as my first VR... But doesnt seem any different than VR cardboard this way that i have on my cellphone :D so definitely not worth it. BTW KUDOS for Asus monitor, i myself never switched that brand for 10 years now :D still got my first 17'' monitor running on alt pc, like a day its bought, never serviced.
brilliant stuff mate for 2 weeks worth of vr homework...im intigued by cheaper tech doing the job...i currently play in a similar fasion...s7 with gear vr,modified to use usb tether cable so i can stream games at 60fps via a app called riftcat.....
you can also use steam vr lol and play oculus games via a another app called revive that works with riftcat.
hopefully getting a new rig in coming months due to compo for a back injury at work....will be getting a headset...but dont know witch...i play games like ets and elite,pcars,dcs...im more cockpit sim guy so dont need that walking around stuff so much....i can do that with my ps4 pad.
Got an oculus rift CV1 with 2 sensors and controllers for full room scale for less then this xD also i love VR games like pavlov and have a room too small to turn around myself so have to use the in game turning but after a bit of it i got used to it now i can play any vr game with no problems
is it able to communicate with software that turns nonVR games into VR? If so then its an amazing bargain.

Stay away from Pimax 4k. Some considerations: HARDWARE: the HDMI 1.4 does not allow to exploit the 4k to more than 30 Hz, and using the resolution to 1k and 2k I was never able to overcome the 60 hz. Videogames in vr that run under 75 Hz can cause nausea, motion sickness, headaches. It really depends on who uses them. I could never use Pimax for more than 2 minutes. The screens are LCD and not OLED. They show ghosting effects every time you move your head. They have no manual adjustment for IPD (Inter pupillar distance) but you must work on the software for the settings. Once you use the Pimax the horizon begins to slowly tilt. Every time I've played a few games in a short time I had to turn myself more and more to the right to keep the image in the center of my vision. As for the SOFTWARE: the Piplay program has come to version 1.2.57 but in the Pimax Forum is recommended to downgrade it to the version 1.1.92. Depending on the model the change in IPD is bugged more or less. With 1.2.57 pupillary distance best for me is 6.3 cm. With 1.1.92 it is 5.8. The software occasionally freezes, sometimes it does not recognize the VR headset and when you change the parameters sometimes you have to restart, others time you have to disconnect and reconnect the Pimax, others must restart SteamVR. About SteamVR, you can not understand what the parameters stored there really involve the Pimax. Brightness and contrast are adjusted in complicated ways and with multiple steps. SUPPORT: I think that selling a product that, from the outset, is potentially harmful to the health of some consumers, it is unserious. If you can feel bad using the Headset that can reach a maximum refresh speed of 60 hz, the thing should be clear. But it is not. Moreover, no one helped me to understand if the illness that I had using Pimax depended on a hardware failure, on a software failure or a from a mine low tolerance for low fps. All the people who have tried my Headset has experienced nausea or dizziness. After some simple e-mail communication, in which the support team has just advised me to update the software, no one has reply to my email. In short, I repeat: stay away from Pimax 4k!
looks great! what pc and video outputs would i need to play at least 3d SBS movies smoothly? (lets say, x264, 18GB filesize). i would like to have a very small pc
Keep the 4k, up the HZ by a lot (maybe even past 90hz) add base stations and gloves for controls, fix the issues that were in this video. All of this at the price of the vive and you basically steal the market.
For anyone watching this in the future year of 2020-2021, please do not discount VR if you get sick using joystick aiming. Phillip mentions this, the Deus Ex demo used joystick aiming and got sick from it. This is extremely common, and people who have zero issues for hours on end using "head" aiming by physically moving their head will get sick from joystick aiming within minutes.
This could work with ps move. Just get 2 ps eye cameras and 3 ps move controllers (2 for hands and 1 for head positional tracking). I've seen ppl on ytb who have done this.
it doesn't have controllers or positional tracking, but Nolo (which is on kick starter for $99 right now) can fix both of those problems. Should make for a high quality cheap headset.
I wouldn't consider this a good product, its 60hz full persistence display where as both the Rift and Vive are 90hz Low persistence. the difference between these two are huge, full persistence is smeary and nauseating for a lot of people, you mentioned this when your spoke of the "ghosting" you experienced. Low persistence is clear and the extra 30fps per second adds so much more "perceived resolution". 4k resolution sounds great but I wouldn't trade 90hz low persistence for it.
My second biggest issue is the lack of positional tracking, your brain can detect when its moving and if what you see doesn't add up to that it can be very sickening. Sort of like the opposite of getting car sick. feeling motion where there is none is not pleasant.
For PIMAX 4K if you need positioning tracking, check out NOLOVR this is official product supported by PIMAX engineers to provide PIMAX 4K with real, full powered positioning tracking feature.
Notes: PIMAX 4K with a serial number 100xxx is a real 4K Display (IPS) PIMAX 4K with a serial number 102xxx is a 2K Display (OLED)
Basically 102xxx serial is BE version (Business Edition) which is why it uses more expensive OLED screen. But lower resolution.
I played the vanishing of ethan carter in vr with the cv1 oculus, couldnt play more than 10-15 mins without feeling nausea, could take it up to 30 minute after that I would start to close my eyes while playing to keep up. In the end the ambiance of the game was stressing me and I was scared of a jump scare so I ended up stopping playing. One thing that worked great was that I screwed a ring to the ceiling to more around free, was quite nice, would also walk on place to simulate movement while using the controller.
But he hasnt even tried the vive. The vive is the best experience you can have on vr. this doesnt even have room scale or controllers it seems. I'd struggle to call it VR at all.
so have i. it was honestly a let down. the little will to buy it i had before faded completely. i'll look into it again when it hits $300 and there's actually more than just minigames on the market.
Looks great, but they say they are coming out with an 8K version. Will probably wait for that and hope for better refresh rates. Really wish PSVR would have had this kind of resolution. :-(
I still honestly would rather save for a HTC Vive and get proper room scale features and actual VR, not to forget added support and features from Valve.
Here is a tip : If you cross your eyes the right amount during the vr footage, you will get double vision. Adjust how crossed your eyes are until the left video overlaps with the right video. Now you can see in 3d.
I first saw the video about a week ago, spent most of the time since trying to come up with a good pun for the comments to challenge you with. Needless to say it was crap.
I might buy this, but I could also buy an Oculus DK2 for 250 euros used. Or a PSVR with controllers and a camera for 400 euros used. It's now possible to use it on PC. What's the best choice?
I've tried all three, the Vive, the Oculus, and recently the Pimax 4k. A friend who makes games for VR got one and let me try it. It's a pretty crazy coincidence that almost right after I try it you review it, but I was pretty disappointed. What killed it was the 60Hz. The Vive and Oculus have 90Hz. I can deal with sitting only, but the 60Hz feels choppy and nauseating compared to the Vive or Oculus. For someone who hasn't ever used VR before it might be ok, but coming from the other two is a definite and obvious downgrade. The tracking also gets a bit choppy sometimes.
the pimax site doesnt offer most of the stuff shown here anymore. the pimax only works with very very few games that do not have positional tracking and do not need the vr controllers. Most of voxpr modded older games also do not work with the pimax because it is not being recognized as a Rift.. Still: It costs less than a 55" screen and the movie experience is well worth the 300 bucks
I think that when you tried to give games the review in that respect, you only played games that would be demo'd at the HTC vive stand in Curry's, I think that if you had experienced Elite Dangerous the PC/PS4 Valkre, and other titles instead of cheap demos that use up-cycled wii remotes. If you had experienced titles like i mentioned that use controllers, (you can use a ps4 controller on pc) or even keyboard n mouse you might have been able to appreciate the singular headset instead of playing a party game that would excite aunts uncles at a drunken new years party. Well thought out review, but you missed really trying some titles that could have given the display a good run for it's money
So what you can do to use vr controls is use the Razer Hydra, i already have them and there is a steam created mod that makes them mimic the vive contollers.
One question do you think it will work on a 8 gigs ram i5 laptop? I want to get into vr but i don't want to get into VR but i don't want to have to buy a new computer to do it.
8:15 I think that turning your head with a controller is the issue here. 2 months ago i had opportunity to test oculus with quad copter demo. The copter was controlled with a controller and the whole thing made me sick after couple of minutes.
for that price and if someone has a PC that will work on the rift, might as well take advantage of the limited time offer they have going right now. The headset and the touch controllers for $399
You could have mentioned earlier that you haven't tried the oculus or vive for comparison specially after hearing reviewers from people that have experienced the other VR sets.
framerate depends on your video card. The only downside as mentioned in the video is that the Pimax has 60hz refresh rate, compared to 90 on the HTC Vibe and Oculus Rift
I'll wait until oculus or Vive become 4K or 5K with 90Hz. Then it would be worth it and I would still likely mostly watch movies as if I were in a real cinema.
if you really cant wait to try VR and have a decent smartphone with gyro sensors. try a vridge with google cardboard. . it lets you connect your phone to your PC as a steam compatible VR headset... theres even a limited trail version (10 minute gameplay sessions before restart)
Hello! Very nice video! And especially thanks for the subtitles, cause sometimes I can not understand you (you have a great diction, but I'm russian man who knows english pretty well, but still not enough to understand all) ... :) Can you please answer: is it possible to wear this VR glasses with my usual glasses? Thanks for vid and reply! You're great reviewer, bro :)
I think the Pimax 4K is pointless, I mean the Google Cardboard can do everything this thing can do for cheaper and you can use special software on your PC to connect your phone to your PC and use the cardboard to play PC VR games.
I think the bandwidth would be a lot less, and screen latency would be even higher (nausea). Also, you'd need a super high end phone with at least a 4K screen (do they even exist?) to not get screen-door effect. I've used a cardboard, and the FOV on it is laughable.
Coming from someone that has tested most of the consumer headsets I’d say mobile VR sucks. No positional tracking, No 6of controllers. However using a larger phone e.g iPhone 8 Plus would give you a much larger FOV. Depends on your lenses (Fresnel or Bipolar) focal length and IPD. However for cardboard headsets you only get a limited selection (Google, Chinese Wholesaler and those binoculars you pulled apart)
Ok, so the bandwidth issue could just be fixed by using a better connection technology than HDMI... A lot of use (including me) don't even use HDMI for our monitors because it's just not good enough, I use DisplayPort for my 2560x1440 monitor to run at 60.
Also the motion sickness, this is the main problem we have in VR at the moment, it'll go away slowly over time the more you use it, also you need to avoid Analogue movement from Gamepads, so rotating using the Right Stick, or Moving using the Left Stick, these are a big no-no... Games mostly avoid allowing these to be analogue, usually this means the rotation will simply jump a certain number of degrees and movement will just be digital, so up moves forward, slow/fast is ignored.
EDIT: One more thing, 4K (and definitely 8K) are totally pointless right now for anyone that doesn't have the most state of the art super computer and enough money to upgrade it constantly right now.
kliksphilp, please compare this to a mobile device using riftcat. It's a software which allows you to use your phone as a vr headset for your PC, using a usb cable.
You're probably not going to respond to this question, but I'd like to ask you if you could test it with Unreal Engine 4's editor? It is free, after all, and from a developer's standpoint it'd be nice to see if it works with UE4.
What about some of the triple AAA games where you'd expect a controller? GTA V has a Vr mode now i think? and games like resident evil 7? Will they all work through steam? P.S thanks for the vid... I live in China and tempted to order one.
i think a better otion is a second hand headset from ebay or something, you can get a vive or oculus for £200, thats what i plan to do once ive upgraded my computer a bit
thank u for this video. I don't need base stations or hand controllers, as I wanna play flght and car sims. so good gyro is more imprtant. Do you know if they are compatible with eye glasses?
The review is nice and all but the experience is nothing like the Vive, there is no roomscale or controllers to immerse you into the new reality although for this price it may be a good buy for someone that cannot afford a Vive. (Vive user talking)
VR without roomscale tracking is very boring and makes VR look more like a gimmick. You will never get a good deal of immersion without being able to use your hands and walk around your room.
Hey Philip! Nice Video, very informative. Can you please tell the name of that keyboard you are using? Im looking for a new mechanical keyboard, and yours looked exactly like i wanted it. A reply would be much appreciated!
Vr will become very cheap because in the future all you will need is one base station and a tracker to stick on a cheap headset. And then along with the tracker you stick a leap motion on the front to use your hands in vr.
I will wait about year until the big companys make their products cheaper. At the moment tthere are too much cheaper pc vr haedsets like this, so I will probably buy now one that is missing features that are important in the future.
I am only going to use it in games Like DCS, WarThunder, Il-2 or Elite Dangerous. I don't care about interactions, since I do have what I need to fly so all I need is a good tracking and display device
Off topic (sort of), but do you have any info about that "cheap" Chinese-made mechanical ten keyless keyboard that was "80% as good as the European version at 30% of th price?
Imo, Pimax is a bit scummy. The controllers and base stations advertised never came. There was a preorder thing for them a few months ago, but that's completely disappeared now and has been replaced with Valve's base stations and knuckles. I don't know if people who preordered the Pimax base station and controllers were given a refund, but I doubt they were seeing as how it all just kinda disappeared without a trace
But thats not "real" VR. They are described more like a 360° image viewing device. So not that immersive. But VR is still in its infancy anyway I guess (all those tech demos).
This really does not seem worth it. Very limited set of features, very limited set of games. Basically a high resolution DK1. 1/3 of the price, but 1/10 of the experience.
Lack of positional tracking and motion controllers, and even 90hz is an enormous setback. The only reason this reviewer can stand it is because he does not know what he's missing.
If you want cheaper VR just for the lolz, Android users can try RiftCat, it's emulates steamvr and oculus rift hardware for really cheap, you can try a demo. It works fairly well but there is a bit of drifting, you can counter this by buying a third party device called EDTracker and use OpenTrack! This is what I use..... On top of it all, it's wireless! :D
EDIT: Also, Philip, if you want to have controllers you can emulate vive controllers using 2 playstation move controllers and 1-3 playstation eye cameras! https://github.com/cboulay/PSMoveService
8:14 resident evil 7 has made it so that when you move the right stick(look) its snaps 30° to which ever direction (left or right)
you can play that game for hours with that mode, but if you switch the mode so that its like in the dues ex demo you played, it makes me sick within 30 seconds
tbh I feel a little bit tricked. the headset runs either at 2560x1440p@60Hz or at 3840x2160p(native resolution) with 30Hz per eye because it is only HDMi 1.4b ... :( The ghosting is also unbearable and 30Hz introduce a horrible flicker on any bright surfaces. before you ask, yes I bought one but not a new one. k got one from eBay unused.
I bricked my pi max a couple of years ago lol but kept it all as the screen was a 4k sharp 5.5" LCD, the optics were good quality, and the body was well-built. Tossed out that shitty mother board and waited for the Sony Xperia X5 premium to get cheap. Well got one yesterday for 150 Canadian dollars. Had to run Minimal ADB and Fastboot on it to set the NATIVE resolution to 3840 x 2160 at 820 ppi which is Bananas. It comes from factory stuck in 1080p with 4k kicking in only for the gallery and YouTube (sometimes). So that was quick 10 mins no rooting. Then I bought the iVRy app for 10 bucks, ran the Steam app on my PC, and after finding good USB cables made it run in REAL 4K. The PiMax was a lie it was never going to run at 4K, as the HDMI would not allow it and the main board was complete garbage. I cooked it trying to make it work... But this looks INCREDIBLE! Even with the terrible tracking it looks better than the many I've tried. I first tried with a GEAR VR headset but the optics were not adequate, so I dug up the Pi crap. I have a Lenovo Mirrage Solo I got new the other day for 90 bucks, and I might steal its onboard tracking. It works quite well, so I might find another solution. My rift is trashed from 100's of hours of use, and getting pitched from my racing wheel all the time, because I'd forget and hang it there. Might dissect that old guy. Now I have an extra 4k 5.5, so I got one of these cheap PRC projectors which just use a super bright LED some simple optics and an LCD with the back lighting removed. With a driver board (80 bucks) and a bit of delicate work I will make my 150 dollar 720p projector into a true 4K projector, sharper than the lower end 1500 dollar Optoma's available. Search 4k diy projector on the tube to see what I'm going on about. Anyway, if you got a Pi Max or a Xperia Premium or both, there is a couple ways to get your money's worth. I'll stick a link to a short video here soon...
I didn’t understand a thing you just said, but it sounds nice being able to scrap things into different items. Too bad I don’t have the knowledge to do it 😭
no tracking -> not compareable to rift or vive thats exactly where they cheaped out since this is the real point of pc vr. This experience is a lot like cardboard and not like vive/oculus
Honestly without room scale, higher frame rates and tracked controllers this is not VR. You are not experiencing VR at a lower price, just selling yourself short. Companies are ruining the VR market providing these subpar experiences. There is a big difference between room scale and having a monitor strapped to your face. It's night and day.
For anyone reading these comments: Look at Windows Mixed Reality. It's a lot better, and a bit cheaper, but didn't exist a year and a half ago when this video came out.
VR is still too expensive for the amount of fun you can get out of it , the so called ''games'' are simplistic and boring , often times you cant play for more than 1-2 hours because you''l get motion sickness. another 4-5 years and maybe VR will be worth the price.
I was like, "how the f everyone on yt is a sound expert and knows to determine highs, mids and lows, while im yet to understand what they are" and then you got me. LOL, I love your humor.
BROOO I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD THE SAME KEYBOARD AS YOU, that keyboard is honestly dope, if you're looking for a cheap mechanical keyboard, that keyboard is the AJAZZ AK33 and it's even got rgb lighting
There is a problem with this headset.... There is no standard to follow. Only hype.... It's great that Pi made the headset, but there is no position tracking or support to evolve this product more. This headset is more like a cellphone VR. In other words, once you start adding controllers and the game needs you to move around(position tracking). The headset is obsolete already. This headset will be great if it came out the same time as Oculus Rift DK1. Then again.... Oculus Rift DK1 was developer kit. It will still fail. Avoid this and keep up with the latest technology.
why do you sponsor Gearbest? when i ordered this headset (6 weeks ago) they told me to wait for max 1 week before it would arrive, but here i am mailing them about order not coming and DHL doesn't even know about my order and one of the explanations i got was that the ordered item was out of stock and there was high demand for it, but when i checked it on their site it said: 47 pieces left
This is China electronics at it's best. I love chinese stuff. Xiaomi makes some of the best phones in the world for dirt cheap, i have a bunch of earbuds that would put any european brand earbuds to shame for less than 12$. ( Quite literally, my 30$ audio technica are more durable but don't sound as good, given they cost three times the price, i can replace the chinese ones whenever i want, not even talking about other brands that cost even more and sound like trash in comparison ). They make game console like the GPD XD which is like Android Nintendo DS that emulates anything up to the PSP, and for half the price of a real one... It's awesome, but i can't help wondering about how much corporate espionnage and IP theft is actually going on. I'll still buy this stuff though, but at some point i'm sure it'll become a problem for western manufacturing and developpment and this will a problem. Right now the important bit is to make out which company really cares and which one doesn't. It's kinda like early access games. Sometimes you can end up with a product that just isn't as good as it should have been, and sometimes you can be really amazed.
this is cheap because no DOF tracking hardware. Pimax 8k version with all stuff exactly like htc vive is 800 $. Better decision i think is Samsung gearVR, or even coming asus tango - dream phone with dream hmd. Because it can use SLAM tracking with only camera
Seems to be great for VR porn. Most VR porn doesn't take advantage of neither positional tracking or motion-controllers, since they are just high-resolution 180 degree videoes. You get these features in a Vive or Oculus+Controllers, but not in the Pimax headset.
It's even more great in combination with Nolo VR (motion controllers). Pimax 4K the best in image quality I seen so far. No screen door effect. Disadvantage: LCD instead of OLED = ghosting / higher latency / higher potential for motion sickness.
Superb work dude. The cutting in the music is really distracting and annoying though. Sounds like the video is buffering. The producer was getting trigger happy with the fader...
Basically VR should be affordable plain and simple i've seen cheaper rip offs of the oculus rift that work with game consoles as well how hard is it to make side by side displays and slapping a working head tracking system with it? It's a marketing scam for people to buy there products and make it unfair to get a hold of.
Douwert PlayStation Move controllers work with some hacking, or there's the upcoming Nolo VR which adds motion controllers and positional tracking stations.
If you are only using the PIMAX 4K for sitting on youtube and watching 360 films. Do you need really hard-core gaming computer specs? could you just hook them up with a standard windows 7 laptop?
I have a modern comp with onboard graphics and the headset wouldnt work in pimax mode, so ended up in extended mode - which was rubbish. I brought a 4GB gtx card and now it is 'capable' but still not best suited for games, but video is perfect and I use the headset for this purpose.
That's interesting, I didn't know that the VR aspects of the game was a timed exclusive. I was surprised by how little support was in the game by default anyways, so this makes a lot more sense. Ty for the info.
at 8:00 the issue you had is not your headset it is the motion you can replicate this by installing vorpx and playing any game not designed for VR in VR... the second you move you feel like your eyes are bing ripped out of your skull
The video is great, but don't wear your vr outside. You have a magnifying glass on your eyes and it would just take one second looking at the sun to damage your eyes of an accident happened.
My feel: image quality centre: Oculus Rift>3Glasses s1>Pimax>Oculus Rift>>Pico Neo image quality edge:HTC vive>Pimax>Pico Neo>Oculus Rift>3Glasses s1 motion pictures: HTC vive>Oculus Rift>Pimax=3Glasses s1=Pico Neo definitely Pimax is not as good as Oculus Rift or HTC vive. but I only paid 260 euros so thats acceptable.
As a Vive owner, you will not want to play fps games like that with a VR headset. VR headsets are downright amazing... as long as there isn't any artificial movement. But when you start being moved around by the game, say in the cockpit of a plane, or using a joystick to move around as you would in a fps normally; that's when thing's start to get a bit dicey. It changes from person to person, but you WILL feel some degree of nausea. Personally I couldn't handle it for more than a few minutes at a time before my head started to complain quite heavily and, very much like phil described, I had to take a breather and lay in bed for about half an hour before my head felt right again. This is a result of our brains getting confused when faced with the differing opinions on movement between your eyes and your inner ear, one saying you are standing still and the other saying you are moving. The end result is... nausea.
The experiences we dream of in VR, at least before I got my Vive, were those of piloting planes, spaceships and the like. Intense experiences that involve a lot of artificial movement. Honestly I think these are some of the weakest examples of what VR can do, they don't push the medium to anything remotely in the vicinity of what VR can offer. One of the most fun experiences I had with the Vive when I took it home and plugged it in was not booting up Elite: Dangerous and ogling at the gorgeous cockpit in a brand new perspective. There was nothing really new, nothing anything as revolutionary as we dream of from VR; just a different perspective. No, one of the most fun experiences I had with VR that day was booting up a simple Unreal Engine 4 template that ships with the engine, and playing with a bunch of brightly coloured boxes with motion controllers like a two year old. There's something amazing about being able to interact with these virtual objects so physically, in such an intimate fashion that is just light years beyond what games like Elite: Dangerous can offer in VR. There's nothing really new to experience there. The future of VR is so completely and utterly different to what currently exists in the gaming industry that I don't think many people realise what they are actually buying until they put it on their eyes and explore what these early stages of the medium have to offer. Such simple experiences can become so much more fun when given just the right set of limitations. Limitations that VR can only truly offer. To date the most fun I've had with my Vive was in Tabletop Simulator, playing what was quite possibly the most intense game of 'snakes and ladders' in the history of mankind. Games like battlefield are not in the future of VR after my experience with it. I see something immensely more interesting in VR's future. I see a world where a simple set of virtual Lego, again with the right constraints, can be infinitely more engaging and visceral than anything that we experience on a standard monitor. More immersive than anything that you can experienced on a monitor.
well, ty for taking time to reply dis long, but i still wanna try vr with games like serious sam, halo, racing games, i have tryed htc vive for 5 minutes on some steam game job simulator, it was fun to throw stuff around, but i got sick bchus the pixels are too damn large , personaly i do play games at 640x480 or 800x600 but man the headset is too heavy. also, and expensive, and as a benq1 144hz monitor owner i say every vr should have low bluelight mode bchus screen dis close to ur eyes @100% brightness will make u blind sooner.
Well, you have the option of Touch Controllers, which are literally game changing. plus you get the advantage of a well-known company, plus that one looks kinda cheap and flimsy...
I have an Oculus Rift and it's AMAZING, and I can't imagine anything better.
no positional tracking is already a dealbreaker for me, even when just using vr while sitting. No option to easily add handtracking, the view will be blurry when looking around because 60hz and no low persistence (no oled screens) No hardware ipd adjust. And the rift has great build quality, is lighter and has good software tech that allows it so still feel very smooth even when not reaching the 90fps. And the rift probably just works with less hassle as well.
What still amazes me is how these people are able to offer this arguably pretty great 4k VR gear but aren't able to produce proper english on their site. If you aren't good in english, maybe hire a translater for 12 dollar per hour? The crappy english is what's most off putting of this device.
lol youve obviously never tried an oculus or an htc vive.. I own a vive.... and its fucking incredible and i never use it for sims like that. Onward and arizona sunshine mainly
+Carrot Survivor bullshit. novelty wears off quickly and all the minigames put together don't add up to a single decent full game's worth of playtime. it fells like a very expensive modernized wii as it is now.
I ordered a 5k Plus last march, still havent got nothing. Pimax customers services is complet crap, they barely speak english. I gave them loss notification from both carrier, they just don t care and I can t do shit about it. I just have lost 1300$. I strongly advice avoiding their products. If anyone have the same issue, plz contact me.
Reviewer claims "i dont have neither oculus or vive" and continues on to give ppl honest review and comparison? This is not a VR headset. This is DK1/Phone level of gimmick. Do not buy. In the video here the reviewer walks around with it, giving a false impression like you could do that. This does not track you through the world so you are "a camera on a stick" with no freedom in VR world. You can use some gamepad or keyboard-mouse to push that "camera on a stick" around in the VR world but you have no real freedom to move inside it by yourself. Proper VR gear give you this DEFINING freedom and thats where VR starts, as your brain will then believe it. You are better off saving money to get a real thing, with controllers to interact with virtual items.
It sounds like you haven't seen this guy's videos before, given that the bits with him walking around in VR goggles and a trenchcoat is obviously just supposed to parody the "futuristic" aspect of VR. I do agree with your points though. I have a Vive myself and I could never imagine giving up the freedom of moving your head around just to have a lower price tag. It's definitely one of the most important aspects to actually feel immersed in VR, and if philip had more experience with the other headsets I'm sure he'd feel the same way. However if you actually watched the rest of the video you'd see that he did actually bring it up, describing it as a "lack of base stations" and he does point it out as being a very big downside compared to more expensive (and upcoming) headsets, along with the lack of motion controls.
Have now seen alot of videos where they praise this headset. Conclusion is that they all have to be sponsored. THE HEADSET IS CRAP. THE SOFTWARE IS CRAP. The product is totally useless. I have the Vive, but bought this for watching movies, because of the screendoor effect. It has less screendoor effect, but you cant move your head if you don't want the picture to be totally blurry. Don't waste your money on this crap..
Everyone wants VR to take off, but how many gamers will wear that over their face FOR HOURS ON END and move around while playing? So far it's a gimmick that kids will enjoy for a while, but that's about it. Think Wii.
hey is this get blurry on the sides like deepoon? on the deepoon e2 if u are not looking the midle of the lens u see al blurry ..if this have that problem,?
The new windows mixed reality headset is the better buy well but new now but yea cheaper and here’s something cool to do if you don’t want to spend 400-1000$ for vr, find the cheapest headset that works very well, buy either the oculus or vive controllers by themselves or with the cameras of either or, or you can buy cheap psvr controllers and buy 2 ps3 cameras and done should be able to do vr cheaper
Games For Cykits Had a friend who did cheap VR with the PlayStation eye and camera stuff... You get what you pay for in that...
Honestly WMR or Oculus Quest all the way for cheap VR.
Though now Pimax makes a VR headset like the Vive that has two 4K screens at 120 FOV. So it’s hard not to be tempted to pay the extra for laser tracking, and better screens.
I'll say you feel sick cause your mind thinks it's poison which makes it want to throw up so not having full control and being able to anticipate and control it the same as a head can will cause these effects
I think Nolo VR is a better and much cheaper alternative for ghetto VR than Pimax. Nolo cost $200 USD and you can even use a shitty bargain brand android phone with no sensors since all the tracking is done with Nolo's sensors.
But PSVR is barely VR. 180° angle doesn't make VR. And its abysmal tracking doesn't help things. Maybe they'll get it right with PSVR 2, if they ever make it.
Well, the Pimax is only without controllers, but it is not made for the same type of games. The Pimax, I would say is more for racing games, where you already have a wheel or stuff like that. But the problem is that HDMI doesnät support 60Hz at 4K. So you will basicly run it at 30Hz
is that the same place you film the goddamn mechanical keyboard video? people there seem to be used to seeing a weird guy running around with a VR headset xd
My issue with oculas. Looking around is 360 which is great but the device has a wire which decides to sexually assault and intertwine into my gaming chair! So I'll be looking around only to get it lasooed round my fucking neck and suddenly I'm in cowboy 4D
PSVR is better value no? Is simple and has positional tracking and small but still functional room scale - so you can walk around a virtual space and peer into things. Screen doors is also less visible than Occulus or Vive.
SteamVR does not (yet) have linux support. So currently no. Valve is expected to make a move soon though since they are starting to sell steam machines (linux) with vives as a bundle.
not interested in vr until it has teh following specs: 4k per eye. Not 2k per eye. Not some arbitrary percentage. 4k PER EYE.' 180-200 field of view. As normal human vision. 90hz 120 maybe 240 lol. Which means we'll have to wait for new gen gpus 4-8 years from now.
That's the problem, would maybe buy the headset if there were controllers also... The controllers is the thing that makes VR Gaming a thing. Otherwise you can buy a google cardboard
Of course you earn somethung, you have a percentage from the product that is bought on amazon through your link

2kliksphilip but why creating this video for such a long time and dedication in order not to earn anything :/ even if you like doing this you should make at least some money out of it..Sorry for my bad english btw
TheDandi Was wondering the same thing. SNSD stan? Possibly. Though SNSD is pretty darn popular in China so maybe it was just a highly rated video in the Pimax VR store.
every vr device uses low frame exposure with relatively large black exposition in between. if they don't, motion looks a lot blurrier due to eye tracking blur. that's what "anti-blur" was in oculus dk2. it's basically the same as ulmb.
2kliksphilip this is a myth. the human eye can absolutely determine over 24 fps. moreover a lot of games absolutely require it. I wouldn't even bother playing a racing sim at 30 fps for example.
Hey Phillip, there are strange artifacts on you your video, probably some optical flow retime plugins is causing that, when motion is fast, it causes strange artifacts around objects in the video. Especially visible on your video typing on mechanical keyboard. It causes me a headache, can you just not use this in the future please? It is really annoying.
Void of Space and Time but is it? He stated in the video he doesn't own a oculus or vive and hasn't worn one in months I honestly have never Have never noticed it on any of the 3 headsets.
HDMI 1.4 which they use doesn't support 4K on 30hz, so you'll have to lower the resolution to get 60hz. I think. It won't be a real 4K, then, but even interpolated 4K should look better than 1080p.
that's not necessarily due to the framerate tho. The concept of having your entire vision shift without you moving your head confuses your brain, specifically small parts of your ear that use fluids to sense motion. Same reason reading in Cars makes lots of people (including me) sick. Unfortunately this problem may never be solved entirely. If you get sick during games that only use tracking this reasoning is slightly irrelevant tho.
Do not i repeat DO NOT buy one of these headsets. I bought one recently, and although the resolution of the screens is very nice, it is very dull and the latency is so bad ( I think 30+ ms) it makes the headset entirely useless for tracking. It really is that terrible I can't stress this enough. This thing is not fit for purpose AT ALL, and after 10 minutes use you would draw the same conclusions immediately.
All these "reviews" about this rubbish item are definately being sponsored by Pimax, without a doubt because it really is such a rubbish, unfit for purpose, item.
no advertising? what is this video? cheap software? i can't imagine the Vive having "expensive" software. generic parts? i'm pretty sure HTC is a company that uses generic parts. they're not like Apple (which, funny enough, also uses child labor).
regardless, this Chinese off-brand will use the same exact software (or else it wouldn't be comparable with the Vive)... so their price cuts are coming from some other department.
it took several years for Apple to be outed as exploiting child labor... you would have probably said the same shit about Apple before 2011. the fact is that if it's cheap from china, then it's either a knock-off brand like a fake Apple that has the apple logo without a bite in it, or the company is exploiting child labor and sweat shops... or both... it's honestly pretty naive to think that you can get an equal-quality VR set for half the price it costs here WITHOUT any catch. just because i'm not on some international investigative team doesn't mean it's not true. China IS KNOWN for terrible workplace conditions. that's why everything is so fucking cheap from there... VR sets included.
yurtpoh Yes I would of BECAUSE THERE IS NO EVIDENCE to prove that they use Child labour. You are saying that because they are a Chinese company, they must be using Child labour.
the evidence is that China is the world's leader in child labor and socially unacceptable working conditions. choosing to ignore it doesn't make it any less true.
"false western propaganda." - yeah i remember being a pretentious teenager in high school.
+MrKmanStudios - so they're clearly going to make a few million before anyone finds hard evidence simply because people don't want to believe in precedent... LUL
i'm definitely not the only person who believes that China exploits child labor... seriously... educate yourself... aaaaaand you've just proven the point i made in my last comment... "they're clearly going to make a few million before anyone finds hard evidence simply because people don't want to believe in precedent... LUL"
yurtpoh errrr I never said China doesn't use child labour, I said that factory that produces the pixel doesn't use child labour. You still haven't answered my question. Give me actual evidence, not your opinion
2kliksphilip - to be fair i never said expensive things "aren't"... but if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is... for instance, if it's so cheap compared to all it's allegedly equal competitors, then what's the harm in being mindful of a catch? clearly something is up, because successful tech companies don't mark things up over 100% just for profit. vote with your dollar.

Every product in your home was probably made in China or some other asian country that uses cheap labour or child labour. Microsoft, Sony, Apple, all the big names, use chinese/asian labour and factories such as foxconn, who have a high number of suicide workers. When conditions were so bad that the workers went to the roof ready to jump off, instead of these multi million dollar companies saying hey, we will pay more for your products so you can sort out workers pay and conditions since we sell at a large markup anyway, they ignored the situation and allowed the bosses to place suicide nets instead. Western consumers are mostly blind to the facts, they see a high price tag and think hey, good quality, worth it, if its cheap it must be bad. Many expensive product are made on the cheap and sold at massive profit margins using a logo people link with quality, such as an apple....point is, look at what these companies pull in every year in profit, and look at who actualy makes the poducts and parts for them, and you will soon see you have had a new one ripped. Saying if it's made in china or some other asian country it must be made by kids or cheap labour makes no sense when almost everything you own comes from asia in some form or another anyway. Taiwan, China, Malaysia, its often cheap labour and poor conditions regardless thats just how Asia is. I think Japan is the only exception but not sure, either way, big brand often means big profits, not high quality, the 2 are not always linked. These companies prove time and time again that money comes before the lives and welfare of their workers. Forcing apple to make products in the US may be Trumps only decent policy, at least it will save or improve lives and put a stop to many overpriced, low quality products like those from Apple and microsoft etc. No excuse for the prices they charge given overall cost, and then they have the cheek to give you a 1 year warranty on a £1000 plus product unless you pay for longer....not just apple but most brands! Because they know people will pay it! Hey are products are so crap were scared to offer a longer warranty so your gonna have to pay for longer, ye? OK great idea, sign me up! The world has gone mad!
You totally missed the point, it matters not were you buy from, the small parts used to make whatever or whomever you buy are from low paid badly treated factories, and nobody, including you, can avoid this. Almost always the small electrical components are from those type of places, and since you are using a device right now to access youtube, you are contributing to this. Sorry but i do my research and it is 100% unavoidble, do yours and you would know this. Throw away everything electrical you own or deal with it, those are your only 2 choices. P.S i am not talking about children, i'm talking about low paid misstreated workers. As for children, anyone who assumes children are used just because something is cheap is an idiot and you have done no research at all in to pimax whatsoever before posting your comments you are just making dumb statements with no proof and making yourself look like a complete wally. I respect that you won't buy anything made by children, me neither if i can help it, but my point was about low paid workers and nobdody using children for complex intricate electrical jobs, i think everyone apart from you realises this and yes i did google it, no proof whatsoever of what you are claiming, not even a hint at it. The very fact you even think there is an army of children doing that type of work is ridiculous, so the only left from them to do is make the plastic housing etc, and do you really think thats going to knock the price down? Cheap often means the seller is not greedy and corrupt, it does not mean always that kids are used. And if your computer is either apple or microsoft you already contributed in a massive way to treating workers badly, this has been proven many times, sorry.
I was at a shoe factory producing cheap to luxury brands in China with over 70,000 employees due to work for over 2 months, there were no signs of child labor. I know your Google skill is high, but just because some Chinese or Indian companies use child labors, doesn't mean all do, and it's more rare to see that in tech companies. Imagine if some ignorant person says they would never buy an American product because the company's staff is probably a mass shooter? That's how stupid that sounds.
So you are sticking to the version where you have concrete evidence specifically about Pimax that they use child labor, and the company I worked at is the only company in China that does not employ child labor?
no i'm sticking to the version where unheard-of low prices typically mean there's a catch that may or may not be entirely legal. child labor and poor work environments are just the easiest go-to for a chinese company since there is precedent.
"Easiest go-to" or laziest go-to? Every country has history of child labor, and unheard of low prices has never automatically equate to a catch or illegal activity, SpaceX delivers same amount of payload as competing space companies at roughly 30% the cost, Pimax is only delivering significantly less features than Oculus at 65% of its cost. Is SpaceX using child labor to squeeze the margins?
yeah, key word: "history" ..... china is one that still DOES lmao. holy shit, 30% off is much different than 65% off of an alleged equal competitor. and that's the thing is that Pimax is advertising itself as equal to the Oculus. philip even said it's hard to tell the difference... so if the quality is roughly the same, then where are they cutting expenses?
It doesn't, please re-read the post and stop shifting the goalpost for a second, anyone who thinks Pimax advertises itself as equal to Oculus doesn't know anything about VR, Pimax is a rotational tracker, Oculus is a constellation tracker, they might have "better" display, but their tracking technology is no where near Oculus. Also SpaceX is 70% OFF, where is Pimax is only 35% OFF, it is indeed much different, SpaceX is ONLY 30% of the total of what their competitors charges, I repeat, 3/10 of the cost, 70% LESS, and they did it with efficiency, innovation, streamlining manufacturing and outsource as little as possible. Which Pimax is not anything like that, it's just a cheap product because it doesn't do all that much except have higher resolution, lower quality display panels, and at 65% the price point of the Oculus, which isn't even that good a deal.
it's only "shifting the goalpost" if you've got tunnel vision. pimax is half the price of an oculus, not 65%. idk where you got that number. and since you were wrong about that one, it's safe to say that spacex isn't 70% off.
My experience with the Pimax as similar, but the 60hz is not the only downside it also have no depth, you can look around but not move you head closer, leaning ect ect. Can cause nausia in some VR games i tried.

Robbaz one of my favorite channels watches another one of my favorite channels :D so cool!
27 likesYeah. He did mention this in the video.
0 likesOnly the rotational movement, no 6DoF? That's a shame, a dealbreaker for me. Maybe I could combine the 3 point LED model I cobbled together for flight sims to get the leaning in as well. I have to do some research.
9 likesoh shit he is here.
0 likesIf you can't lean/duck and dodge. I'd rather save for the Vive, thanks for your input Robbaz.
10 likesJust to give everyone in this thread a heads up, if you don't mind dropping £100, there's a product called NoloVR that brings 6DoF movement and controllers that work the same as the VIVE's, the only downside is that it's currently 180 degrees infront, which is suitable for most games however!
5 likesYeah, Nolo VR is the solution. Kickstarter goal was reached within 8 hours.
0 likesI can't even afford the pimax. I settled on google cardboard.
3 likesI recommend VR Box 2.0 for mobile VR. Much better and comfortable than Google Cardboard. Very popular and cheap.
0 likesRobbaz what is ur config?
1 likeRobbaz i am hoping that my 60hz ir tracker will fix the axis problems.
0 likesStop sleeping in VR and edit more videos Robert!
0 likesWell they say on their site it has 90 Hz.
0 likesRobbaz
0 likesActually, that is not entirely accurate. It implies that the environment is static, when its not...
ect
0 likesYeah, just get an oculus go if you don't care about leaning, walking, room scale, etc... It even comes with a controller for $100 less!
0 likesAnd there's no pc required, only downside is lower resolution (equal to Rift), and 60-75hz framerate, which this one is locked to 60 anyway
0 likesEven as a Vive owner, I can only be excited by progress like this. I want to see wider adoption of VR, and lower barriers to entry will benefit everyone. VR is amazing and I can't wait to see what talented developers will bring with a wider audience.
20 likesPhillip!
7 likesExcellent review.
0 likesReally great review and hilarious. YouTube finally suggested something good for once! Subscribed.

Marcos42563 yeah, 2k, 90hz+ and no headphones, proper controllers, 300€... to dream is free 😔
25 likesMarcos42563 or make it 2k with all six directions of tracking
2 likesi don't know about that. pretty soon, all you'll need for that is your phone. new android devices are all going to ship with gearvr grade vr-compatible motion tracking, so all you'll need for steam VR is a viable wireless connection to a pc, which is also coming with the new 10gbps wifi spec, and a middleware like riftcat, which is already available and works with any gyro-equipped phone (though it kinda sucks because the sensors are laggy in current phones).
1 likeso in a couple of years at worst, you won't actually have to buy almost anything to experience entry-level vr.
1 likeZero Budget Noob Hundreds of complete compatible games? Who will make them if you're putting people off VR? There will be no newer versions of headsets and VR is dead in the water if no one takes a chance on the tech, provided they have the means, of course.
0 likesVR is still at its testing stage...like it or not, until the newer versions of the headset are out with software improvements and more affordable prices it will not gain mass-consumer status.
0 likesYou say that as if there were no big titles that had support for VR.
0 likesAnd that would take less than half a decade to perfect? The games you mentioned "support vr" and were not exclusively made for vr. All you say after that I completely agree with...and that is exactly why as I say over and over again RIGHT NOW, as in this year(and the next) VR is NOT worth it.
0 likesI don't know how you can say that, although I will admit the possibility of an exclusively VR game being in any way successful is extremely unlikely, full VR support is as good as it gets, as mouse + keyboard is still the most common way to play games, and will be for a couple of decades, and because supporting more than one input pattern is THE way to go.
1 likeWhen most games have VR exclusivity, it won't be a sign of an industry evolving, but rather of an industry abandoning an entire market and leaving behind it's greatest strength, and that would be detrimental for the gaming industry overall. So I'd say VR support is as far as any game should go, not exclusivity.
Budget Noob--The problem is once you actually play your favourite game in VR, YOU CAN'T GO BACK!...even with it's present res issues and high cost!
1 likeI used to play elite dangerous in normal flat-screen but then tried playing it at friends house in VR and now I spent $$$ to get VR and no regrets! Before I just play a game, now I am IN a game IN my very own spaceship! Just being honest here and not trying to sell anything.
It is obvious you have not tried VR yet!
They could just give you a "cardboard vr" 6-dof (inside-outside tracking) headset, 3-dof controller and no headphones, and still give it for 40 dollars
0 likesGreat video! It's nice to see that there are cheaper VR alternatives to the Vive and the Oculus.
7 likesI owned a Pimax 4k VR for 5 months now. It is generally a great product. I never really had problems with it other than getting the software to work well with it. I had to downgrade to an older version and I use that to hook it up with Steam VR. (I don't use the crappy things that come with the Piplay program)
0 likesI'm amazed by how far we've come in 5 years. The fact the quest 2 beats all these headsets while being a mobile headset is just incredible. Looking forward to what 2027 has to offer for VR now!
0 likesGreat video. Really helpful and enjoyable to watch. Despite it being a relatively long video. Your style of filming and humour keeps me watching.
1 likeThe set certainly does appear to bring VR to more people with its price. I assume that it doesn't register forward and back head movement (zoom)
I've tried a Vive and the biggest letdown for me was the low resolution. This being 4k looks like it might be the solution!
0 likesVery nice, fair, honest review. I love your stuff, as always.
3 likesI am sure that you could partially solve the lack of no motion tracking device with the Steam Controler, use the gyro for turning around when you are standing and rest of the controller like a normal controller. You would just enable the gyro to be always ON and act like a mouse, so when you would physically turn around when standing and hold the controller in front of you then you would turn around in the game as well.
0 likesActually, when I tried HTC Vive my first impression of the controllers was that they are just left and a right half of the Steam Controller, just enhanced a bit to allow you to control each hand on its own which is not very possible with the Steam Controller (maybe with a lot of thinking and tinkering you could do it but it still wouldn't be spot on).
I'd guess that VR could work well for first-person vehicle-based games, as you wouldn't have to walk around the room, and you would also be able to use regular controllers.
0 likesHey Phillip, I like the video and I'm glad you have been able to try some VR, but please try the Vive (or oculus) sometime. The PiMax lacks positional tracking, and it's hard to overstate how important this is.
0 likesIt was best headset for ED/flight/race sims (with Nolo positional tracking) until now
0 likesthat 5K+/8K are out. It still has better perceived
resolution and SDE than 8K.
0 likesNice review, tho it's no longer a fraction the price of an oculus which gives you much more functionality. You can get the oculus along with the two hand touch controls on special now for $399, even when it goes off special it's $499 which is still a better value to get over the Primax 4K. This review does get me excited for the next revision of the oculus or the vive which are both expected to have much higher resolution as well as being fully wireless.
0 likesFor the uploader:
0 likesYou can use the "Motion" Sensor on your vr and you wont need any controller.
Really nice and easy to install, just glue it on the device.
Maybe you can also solder it to the usb cable?
Seems to me like a well ROUNDED device -

0 likesman, but I love the clean, almost wireless look of it. Makes it look definitely like the future, and the smooth look makes this look better than the vive in my opinion. Not to say the thing itself is better, the vive is way better than Oculus and pi.
0 likesI'm glad that VR could bring competition to make these headsets cheaper and higher quality.
0 likesfor the vive you are paying for the lighthouse trackig with room scale and hand controls, it looked like the pi would use a gyroscope which does not have as good tracking as vive. one of the coolest and most attractive parts of the other vr headsets is that you can actually move around and immerse yourself in the world
0 likesI think this headset would be a great solution for people looking to use them with driving or flightsims.
0 likesYou definitely need to look into virtual desktop. It acts as a giant customizable desktop and will allow you to play YouTube 360 videos.
0 likesAlso Kodi is a great choice, very versatile. Look into the plugins and get to ripping your video collection.
Hopefully the Pimax 8k version will have a 4k upscaling thing for games and native 8k for movies, because if so would be a great content consuming device
0 likesnow that Vive and Rift are widely available, it's a fundamental problem with the review not to be able to compare purely in technical terms.
0 likesedit: also, it needs to be said that pi max is trading more off the 4k nature of its display, rather than any genuine competing features of its rivals.
0 likesIf this thing would have roomscale VR with motion controllers like in the upcoming 8k version, then it would be the VR headset of my choice, but i think i still gonna wait.
0 likesthe only thing that is a let down for my vive is the resolution. I also have Google daydream with a Google pixel XL which had a resolution of 2560x1440 and after comparing the two it's definitely noticeable.
0 likesIt's not the best VR headset for gaming but for movies. No screen door effect.
1 likeIf they had equivalent controllers this'd be a brilliant buy.
0 likesIf the 4k headset doesn't have IR emitters on the headset itself, the base stations wouldn't work for spacial positioning.
5 likesnot having basestations, controllers and the worse refresh rate makes the price seem a bit overpriced... if you take the 700€ of the vive and then remove 240€ for the basestations and 200€ for the controllers (in store prices -150€ because they probably don't cost that much too make) you get about 260 € for the headset... now lets compare that to 300£ and you see wich one of them really is cheaper... (yes it does have a higher resolution display but that is balanced out by the lower framerate)
3 likesAnother alternative that is 1:1 to vive/oculus which is somewhat cheaper is the razer hdk2 (it's a opensource devkit, Seated experience only or similair movement tracking like the Oculus DK2 and like the pimax no hand tracking devices, people are mentioning that you are able to hook up a kinect for room tracking and or a playstation eye camera with controller to also have motion controllers).
0 likesBtw: Any game that has OpenVR support can run most if not any vr-system in some matter.
I think this is really good for simulations such as Project Cars or DCS, where moving around is not necessary.
0 likesGreat video, and good to see someone else trying to push the technology forward. Now, what is that gorgeous keyboard and where can I get it? I have been looking for something exactly like that for ages.
0 likesThere is also OSVR HDK 2.0. It's great to almost the same price.
0 likesOnly question I got is if it will work in 3 months, would be cool if you could make a new video about it in some time, just to update us about how it "ages" :)
32 likesThank you very much for your review.

Captain Jack when are you going to release your VR Video? I can't wait to feel that experience.
0 likesExcellent review!
0 likesHas anybody tried connecting this directly to a blu ray player just to watch films?
The controllers really are the reason I'd still go with the Vive over this, because there's more games you can play with said controllers
0 likesGreat video, very informative and entertaining! I particularly like the bits of you tripping and walking into things on the hoe! I have a mate in Plymouth with an Oculus CV1 and the controllers, if you wanted to do a comparison...
0 likesThank you very much for this excellent and detailed overview!
0 likes11:50 , you can use the nolo vr addon to get hands.
0 likesDoes it have room scale? does it have specific controllers? Does it have guaranteed compatibility with steam games? Can you integrate real objects into the vr world? I want my Vive
0 likesSince it doesn't have VR controllers or those body movement sensor thingies, then this means it would be great for a cheap VR sim racing experience.
0 likesI have read your Review as well as watching this video.
0 likesThis is the first time ive seen 4K and "Budget" in the same sentence although it isnt really 4K which makes a lot more sense.

1 likeIn some games my Vive sometimes reaches 45 fps maximum, it depends on the person but i didn't feel sick after playing with it for a while.
1 likeJust a heads up about the joystick turning sickness, make sure you're using snap turn. As someone who is both a VR enthusiast, and someone who gets motions sickness easily, its a godsend
0 likesGreat video. Really makes me think about using the product if I had one.
0 likesThis video shows you walking around outside wearing the headset. Does that mean that this has mobile and AR functions. That makes this pretty impressive.
0 likesCan't believe the Deus Ex devs ever thought controlling head direction with a controller was a good idea.
11 likesthe light house and controller's are the whole point c: and plus I feel like 90hz is necessary
0 likes4K is not a gimmick, it's a must on VR.
0 likesScreen door effect is really obvious on FHD and 2k VR
here's a question for ya, do you think if you used trackir along with the Pimax that you'd be able to to get that head movement while looking around? if you don't know trackir uses IR leds to track headmovement in simulation games truck simulator and space shooters like elite dangerous
0 likesFor $400, OSVR HDK v2 is almost certainly a better option.
0 likes60hz is a killer. 90hz is the bare minimum to do what PSVR, Oculus and Vive are doing. Basically this is a completely different kind of product from the main three VR headsets.
5 likesReplies (4)
Oh and headtracking is very important that this is missing.
0 likesThe killer is not 60hz. The killer is LCD for VR. Pimax (LCD 60hz) and Gear VR (OLED 60hz). LCD = higher potential for motion sickness (ghosting).
0 likesPSVR is also 60hz, and this uses the same fake 120hz interpolation.
2 likesI can't help but be somewhat impressed that the PSVR runs at 90Hz on a PS4. Pretty good optimization (sorry for necroing the comment thread).
0 likesThere's a cheaper one I plan to try out myself. That's been getting good reviews. But not as high quality.
0 likesThat's suppose to work about the same way with tracking. (Seriously some people are using Pimax software with it apparently).
those built in headphones actually look really good, they look much better than what other headsets do
0 likes8:31 no you will get sick by moving around in same manner, on a Vive/Oculus. It is simply the "drifting" movement that makes you sick. This is why most VR experiences uses teleportation to move you around in larger spaces. Source: I own a Vive myself
0 likesWhat you were saying about the nausea, apparently it's more likely to happen if you're very resistant to "travel sickness".

1 likeGearbest is an awful site.

0 likesThe more companies the better, competition is the greatest innovator and I cant wait for vr to get more affordable
0 likesQuick question, though I might be several months too late to ask it... Around 16:16 in this video, how scary was it to walk into that thing when basically blindfolded?
0 likesis Pimax still the best choice? I'm trying to save up for VR and I want to avoid the screendoor effect, and I'd like the highest possible FOV available. what would you recommend? also, I love your channel, subbed.
1 like13:54 it seems valve was working on HL3.

@the dark bun half-life Alyx IS half-life 3
4 likes@the dark bun are you being serious? The half life series is always been about innovation game mechanics, so vr is a logical step to take in order to achieve this

1 likeI think if you had a Rift+Touch or Vive to compare it to you'd be a lot more negative. With the Windows Holographic headsets coming, I wouldn't recommend this.
0 likesThe Pimax's 60hz refresh rate puts it more in line with phone based solutions like Daydream or GearVR.
The motion sickness was definitely caused by the turning smoothly. Any good friends title will have you teleport instead of smoothly move and rotate.
0 likesFor me VR w/o being able to orbit-look at an object is out of the question, it's not VR, it's just a bigger display. So I personally wouldn't spend that much money on an almost no-name motorcycle - I would pay double, maybe 4x for a proper, established, sports car.
0 likesBTW, what's the system @11:54?
Well if it was cheaper (considering no IR sensors to track your body movement AND no wireless controllers for it) i would consider to buy it as my first VR... But doesnt seem any different than VR cardboard this way that i have on my cellphone :D so definitely not worth it. BTW KUDOS for Asus monitor, i myself never switched that brand for 10 years now :D still got my first 17'' monitor running on alt pc, like a day its bought, never serviced.
0 likeshow is it for stationary stuff? like elite dangerous or DCS world? stuff that doesn't need special controllers or weird movement.
14 likesalso now i want icecream, god damn it philip.
Great video - well thought out. Thanks Philip!
0 likes4K @30Hz and 1440p @60Hz. Maybe you can overclock the display using Nvidia control panel to 1440p 75Hz? It's worth a shot.
0 likesbrilliant stuff mate for 2 weeks worth of vr homework...im intigued by cheaper tech doing the job...i currently play in a similar fasion...s7 with gear vr,modified to use usb tether cable so i can stream games at 60fps via a app called riftcat.....
0 likesyou can also use steam vr lol and play oculus games via a another app called revive that works with riftcat.
hopefully getting a new rig in coming months due to compo for a back injury at work....will be getting a headset...but dont know witch...i play games like ets and elite,pcars,dcs...im more cockpit sim guy so dont need that walking around stuff so much....i can do that with my ps4 pad.
Got an oculus rift CV1 with 2 sensors and controllers for full room scale for less then this xD
1 likealso i love VR games like pavlov and have a room too small to turn around myself so have to use the in game turning but after a bit of it i got used to it now i can play any vr game with no problems
YouTube recommended something I actually wanted to watch? I'm blown away.
3 likesis it able to communicate with software that turns nonVR games into VR? If so then its an amazing bargain.
0 likesStay away from Pimax 4k.
0 likesI'm thinking of getting this for flight sims, would this be a good choice. the 4k is very attractive.
0 likesReplies (1)
*2K it's not actually 4K. The Pimax 4K is sporting 2x 2K displays, hence the "4K" in the same. Same thing goes for the Pimax 8K, it's not 8K, it's 4K.
0 likeslooks great! what pc and video outputs would i need to play at least 3d SBS movies smoothly? (lets say, x264, 18GB filesize). i would like to have a very small pc
0 likesI wish there was a cheaper, 1080p version :/

But it's already quite cheap....and 4k is their selling point
13 likesYou're probably gold with the OSVR HDK1, never tried it but it seems like it does what's on the tin.
0 likesyea, I just want to watch movies
0 likesKodredCud agree with those below. A OSVR 1.4 or a DK2 is provably what you want. Just remember you get screen door effect at those lower resolutions.
0 likesAirplaneRandy for movies just get like google cardboard for your phone
0 likes1080p is too low for 110 degree field of view.
0 likesKeep the 4k, up the HZ by a lot (maybe even past 90hz) add base stations and gloves for controls, fix the issues that were in this video. All of this at the price of the vive and you basically steal the market.
0 likesFor anyone watching this in the future year of 2020-2021, please do not discount VR if you get sick using joystick aiming. Phillip mentions this, the Deus Ex demo used joystick aiming and got sick from it. This is extremely common, and people who have zero issues for hours on end using "head" aiming by physically moving their head will get sick from joystick aiming within minutes.
0 likesYou can use psmove controllers for the hand tracking or leap motion. those are cheap solutions not perfect but goog enough for the price
0 likesStill gonna get the Vive. Hand trackers + 90hz + roomscaling is more convincing for me than just 4k.

0 likesThat turning sickness thing is combated by having you turn in 8 angles inatead of turning smoothly, Resident Evil 7 uses this very well.
0 likesIt seems like a cheap Oculus, I wonder how long until there is a good room-scale VR alternative.

This could work with ps move. Just get 2 ps eye cameras and 3 ps move controllers (2 for hands and 1 for head positional tracking). I've seen ppl on ytb who have done this.
0 likesI own a one of these. It's pretty awesome.
0 likesAre you able to use the Pimax as your HMD and pair it with Vive controllers for motion control VR Gaming?
0 likesDamn it! It's so close, and yet so far! My 4K monitor will have to suffice for now...
1 likeI just found out that pimax released a controller named Nolo.
4 likesMaybe you could check it out? ;)
it doesn't have controllers or positional tracking, but Nolo (which is on kick starter for $99 right now) can fix both of those problems. Should make for a high quality cheap headset.
0 likesI wouldn't consider this a good product, its 60hz full persistence display where as both the Rift and Vive are 90hz Low persistence. the difference between these two are huge, full persistence is smeary and nauseating for a lot of people, you mentioned this when your spoke of the "ghosting" you experienced. Low persistence is clear and the extra 30fps per second adds so much more "perceived resolution". 4k resolution sounds great but I wouldn't trade 90hz low persistence for it.
0 likesMy second biggest issue is the lack of positional tracking, your brain can detect when its moving and if what you see doesn't add up to that it can be very sickening.
0 likesNotes:
PIMAX 4K with a serial number 100xxx is a real 4K Display (IPS)
PIMAX 4K with a serial number 102xxx is a 2K Display (OLED)
0 likesYou sold me. I love the HTC vive but the bugger is too expensive.
9 likesReplies (4)
But he hasnt even tried the vive. The vive is the best experience you can have on vr. this doesnt even have room scale or controllers it seems. I'd struggle to call it VR at all.
1 likeI have tried the vive myself.
1 likeso have i. it was honestly a let down. the little will to buy it i had before faded completely. i'll look into it again when it hits $300 and there's actually more than just minigames on the market.
0 likes@GraveUypo I think it's reached that point now ;)
0 likesLooks great, but they say they are coming out with an 8K version. Will probably wait for that and hope for better refresh rates. Really wish PSVR would have had this kind of resolution. :-(
0 likesI still honestly would rather save for a HTC Vive and get proper room scale features and actual VR, not to forget added support and features from Valve.
1 likeReplies (1)
This is entry level VR on a budget.
0 likesWhat controllers can you use for these?
0 likesFrom what I read the Vive and Touch controllers only work with their partner headsets..
Here is a tip : If you cross your eyes the right amount during the vr footage, you will get double vision. Adjust how crossed your eyes are until the left video overlaps with the right video. Now you can see in 3d.
1 likeWelp, I wrote in the Discord something about Philip and VR, and two minutes later this is published. Nice.

I first saw the video about a week ago, spent most of the time since trying to come up with a good pun for the comments to challenge you with. Needless to say it was crap.
0 likesSo, you are like god now, right?
0 likesI might buy this, but I could also buy an Oculus DK2 for 250 euros used.
0 likesOr a PSVR with controllers and a camera for 400 euros used. It's now possible to use it on PC.
What's the best choice?
It would only be truly competitive if it had handsets and position sensing and stuff. until they do that it's not really worth it in my opinion.
0 likesloved the outdoor scenes.
0 likesspecially 18:16
3 likesReplies (3)
tagtag123 it's 60hz
1 likeOops yeah, that's a typo. Fixed it thanks.
0 likesLmao 30Hz would be unplayable
0 likesHigher refresh rate, fix the ghosting and lower the resolution and it'd be considerable imo.
0 likesThe OSVR HDK 2.0 is a far better choice for the same price.
0 likesthe pimax site doesnt offer most of the stuff shown here anymore. the pimax only works with very very few games that do not have positional tracking and do not need the vr controllers. Most of voxpr modded older games also do not work with the pimax because it is not being recognized as a Rift..
0 likesStill: It costs less than a 55" screen and the movie experience is well worth the 300 bucks
I think i ll save my money and wait for the VIVE price to go down a bit. I want to try fps vr so bad :)
0 likesDoes it induce nausea if you use the Pimax while eating 500g of sugar free gummi bears?
3 likesThose looking for budget VR should rather look at OSVR, it's got 90Hz and it'll probably be supported the longest of all systems, being open source.
0 likesWhat codec do you use that turns areas of the video that are rich with details into kaleidoscope image?
0 likesI think that when you tried to give games the review in that respect, you only played games that would be demo'd at the HTC vive stand in Curry's, I think that if you had experienced Elite Dangerous the PC/PS4 Valkre, and other titles instead of cheap demos that use up-cycled wii remotes.
0 likesSo what you can do to use vr controls is use the Razer Hydra, i already have them and there is a steam created mod that makes them mimic the vive contollers.
0 likesHahaha that intro tho.
37 likesjust a tip: never take your hmd outside. The sun kills the screen via lenses.
1 likeThx 4 the info. Will buy the 8K version with controllers, if it's usability is up to Vive.
0 likesOne question: Can you play in a resolution lower than 4K?
0 likesOne question do you think it will work on a 8 gigs ram i5 laptop? I want to get into vr but i don't want to get into VR but i don't want to have to buy a new computer to do it.
0 likesCan you use wii-motes?
3 likes8:15 I think that turning your head with a controller is the issue here.
0 likes2 months ago i had opportunity to test oculus with quad copter demo. The copter was controlled with a controller and the whole thing made me sick after couple of minutes.
Nice review and the outdoor shots were hilarious
0 likesIt only has 60Hz which might be a bit too low for VR.
0 likesfor that price and if someone has a PC that will work on the rift, might as well take advantage of the limited time offer they have going right now. The headset and the touch controllers for $399
0 likes>bamdwidth limitations
7 likeswhy not use HDMI 2.0??? silly company.
Did you try overclocking the panels on the headset to run at a higher refresh rate?
0 likesphilip, that intro was amazing 10/10!!
0 likesYou could have mentioned earlier that you haven't tried the oculus or vive for comparison specially after hearing reviewers from people that have experienced the other VR sets.

4 likesReplies (6)
framerate depends on your video card.
9 likesThe only downside as mentioned in the video is that the Pimax has 60hz refresh rate, compared to 90 on the HTC Vibe and Oculus Rift
And it doesnt have controllers and stations. As a Vive owner thats something must have with vr.

0 likesare there vr controllers for these? just because I don't feel the vr that much and the controllers is the coolest thing in vr.
0 likesPhilips is such an expert at reviewing shit, I love him
0 likesI think the Pimax 4K is pointless, I mean the Google Cardboard can do everything this thing can do for cheaper and you can use special software on your PC to connect your phone to your PC and use the cardboard to play PC VR games.
7 likesReplies (7)
I think the bandwidth would be a lot less, and screen latency would be even higher (nausea). Also, you'd need a super high end phone with at least a 4K screen (do they even exist?) to not get screen-door effect. I've used a cardboard, and the FOV on it is laughable.
2 likesComing from someone that has tested most of the consumer headsets I’d say mobile VR sucks.
0 likesWith a couple of cameras, a good quality USB cable a good phone and some know-how anything is possible.
0 likesWell what about refresh rate? Your probably going to get 30HZ from a 7 Plus (coming from experience)
0 likesCan't play Elite Dangerous on a smartphone.
0 likesYes you can with VRidge.
0 likesIt's for people like me who want visual clarity for flight and racing sims and are allergic to SDE and smartphones
0 likesOk, so the bandwidth issue could just be fixed by using a better connection technology than HDMI... A lot of use (including me) don't even use HDMI for our monitors because it's just not good enough, I use DisplayPort for my 2560x1440 monitor to run at 60.
0 likesAlso the motion sickness, this is the main problem we have in VR at the moment, it'll go away slowly over time the more you use it, also you need to avoid Analogue movement from Gamepads, so rotating using the Right Stick, or Moving using the Left Stick, these are a big no-no... Games mostly avoid allowing these to be analogue, usually this means the rotation will simply jump a certain number of degrees and movement will just be digital, so up moves forward, slow/fast is ignored.
EDIT:
One more thing, 4K (and definitely 8K) are totally pointless right now for anyone that doesn't have the most state of the art super computer and enough money to upgrade it constantly right now.
Will be perfect for the sim racing.
0 likeskliksphilp, please compare this to a mobile device using riftcat. It's a software which allows you to use your phone as a vr headset for your PC, using a usb cable.
0 likesYou're probably not going to respond to this question, but I'd like to ask you if you could test it with Unreal Engine 4's editor? It is free, after all, and from a developer's standpoint it'd be nice to see if it works with UE4.
0 likesWhat about some of the triple AAA games where you'd expect a controller? GTA V has a Vr mode now i think? and games like resident evil 7? Will they all work through steam? P.S thanks for the vid... I live in China and tempted to order one.
0 likesA great deal of compromise in quality to give you 4k.

0 likesi think a better otion is a second hand headset from ebay or something, you can get a vive or oculus for £200, thats what i plan to do once ive upgraded my computer a bit
0 likesI think the vive 2 will be the best thing for a long time. Until something akin to "full dive VR" like in that crappy anime comes out.
0 likesDid you try any racing games yet? Would the 60hz be too low for those?
0 likesIf it doesnt have 6dof tracking and 6dof tracked controllers, it doesnt count as vr, period.

0 likesThe Oculus rift is now the same price (Well almost) As the PiMax

0 likesWonder how this works with games like war thunder/ Elite dangerous/etc.
0 likesYou have to try House of the Dying Sun. 2 hours of space flying ecstasy!
0 likesVR without roomscale tracking is very boring and makes VR look more like a gimmick. You will never get a good deal of immersion without being able to use your hands and walk around your room.

0 likesTry connect PS Move as controllers, there are tutorials on the Internet.

Mouse/Keyboard Or A Controller.
0 likes8K?!?! I think I might have to upgrade my R9 280X.
0 likes0:54 That warping on the keyboard.
0 likeshave you tried DCS with it? 6DoF would be useful though...
0 likesVr will become very cheap because in the future all you will need is one base station and a tracker to stick on a cheap headset. And then along with the tracker you stick a leap motion on the front to use your hands in vr.
0 likesHoly cow you have the same controller as me I feel so special
0 likesHow does one control the Pimax, when watching movies for example,...does the buttons on the set Work for selecting stuff in menu's etc. etc. ???
0 likesthere are two reasons i want a VR headset. Warthunder with a joystick, and racing games with a pedals and racing wheel
0 likesnvidia shutting out others that don't have hardware made by them or their partners? NEVER
0 likesI think I'm gonna wait for Occulus Gen 2 before I get a VR Headset
0 likesI recommend you the nolo vr that’s permit you to have controller and move in the environment
0 likesCan you trust it? Can you trust a reviewer who models a headset as everyday wear in public? (kidding)
0 likesSounds like it might be the biz for sim games where you're sitting down, looking straight ahead and moving your head to look about.
Nice review, btw, have you tried Project car with it ( or others car games ) ?
0 likesI love the Pure Pwnage reference at 1:08, haven't thought about that show in years
0 likesIf I can play racing games with this it'll be more than enough! Don't need hand controllers :-)
0 likesTHIS IS THE ONLY DECENT REVIEW I HAVE EVER SEEN OF VR DOOOO MORE
0 likeswhen you can play in higher resolution on vr than I can normally.
0 likeswell ... on a rewatch ...
0 likesI assume the "buzzing" is probably the resistor.
It happens with every chinese appliance.
I "think" it's to save on materials, as you build just one circuit and change the resistance for the desired effect.
yes it is cheap, but it is missing tracking, and without that it is equivalent to a google cardboard.
0 likesI will wait about year until the big companys make their products cheaper. At the moment tthere are too much cheaper pc vr haedsets like this, so I will probably buy now one that is missing features that are important in the future.
0 likesI am only going to use it in games Like DCS, WarThunder, Il-2 or Elite Dangerous. I don't care about interactions, since I do have what I need to fly so all I need is a good tracking and display device
0 likesOff topic (sort of), but do you have any info about that "cheap" Chinese-made mechanical ten keyless keyboard that was "80% as good as the European version at 30% of th price?
0 likeshi man kinda new to vr and i was wondering if a i5 4690k and a gtx 1060 (3gb) could do the trick
1 likethis "budget" vr is still well over 300-400€ ..for anyone who is wondering
0 likesi got my Oculus rift for 222 pounds and it came with two sensors and the two touch controllers
0 likesBtw the oculus + controllers is 400 pounds on amazon
0 likes60hz on a vr headset? Idk if my stomach would handle it xd
0 likesi see that it does not have any tracking cameras, how does it feel when panning?
0 likesImo, Pimax is a bit scummy.
0 likesWhich keyboard is that? I might get myself one of those!
0 likesif it comes with controllers and support for VIVE games I am in.
1 likethe vomit-inducing controller thing is a known issue with VR on all platforms, it's not exclusive to the pimax
0 likesOnly 60hz?
0 likesNah man, I am out.
Gonna wait for something else :D
Great Video though!
Very good presentation :)
Replies (3)
no offense but u havent tried it
0 likesAll mobile VR headsets = 60hz. Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream....
0 likesBut thats not "real" VR.
0 likesThey are described more like a 360° image viewing device.
So not that immersive.
But VR is still in its infancy anyway I guess (all those tech demos).
pimax 8k sounds good, I'll wait :)
2 likesOh how far vr has come.
0 likesCan you use any form of touch controls
0 likesThis really does not seem worth it. Very limited set of features, very limited set of games. Basically a high resolution DK1. 1/3 of the price, but 1/10 of the experience.
0 likesLack of positional tracking and motion controllers, and even 90hz is an enormous setback.
0 likesEDIT: Also, Philip, if you want to have controllers you can emulate vive controllers using 2 playstation move controllers and 1-3 playstation eye cameras! https://github.com/cboulay/PSMoveService
Lovely video Philip!
0 likesCan you use this with Oculus Touch Controllers?
1 like2010: Dont sit too close to your screen, you will hurt your eyes.
0 likes2018:
finally you have a decent desk and proper mousepad !
0 likesThis looks PERFECT for war thunders VR mode
0 likesYou get 60 fps by using twixtor or fram interpolation right?
0 likesExcellent Review. Thx
0 likes8:14 resident evil 7 has made it so that when you move the right stick(look) its snaps 30° to which ever direction (left or right)
0 likesyou can play that game for hours with that mode, but if you switch the mode so that its like in the dues ex demo you played, it makes me sick within 30 seconds
You can use leap motion vr controllers, or nolo vr controllers.
0 likesthe 8k version is available on gearbox
0 likes20 minutes of phillip?
0 likesNever before have I clicked a video so quickly...
tbh I feel a little bit tricked. the headset runs either at 2560x1440p@60Hz or at 3840x2160p(native resolution) with 30Hz per eye because it is only HDMi 1.4b ... :(
0 likesThe ghosting is also unbearable and 30Hz introduce a horrible flicker on any bright surfaces.
before you ask, yes I bought one but not a new one. k got one from eBay unused.
technically you're going to have a slight bias because they gave you a free headset but I still loved the review!
0 likesI guess you have to get VR now, since Half-life
0 likesI bricked my pi max a couple of years ago lol but kept it all as the screen was a 4k sharp 5.5" LCD, the optics were good quality, and the body was well-built.

Too bad I don’t have the knowledge to do it 😭
0 likesno tracking -> not compareable to rift or vive
0 likesthats exactly where they cheaped out since this is the real point of pc vr.
This experience is a lot like cardboard and not like vive/oculus
Replies (1)
You can add your own positional trackers. The Pimax 8K will have built in positional tracking.
0 likes1:34 ...right in the feels ,right in the third era
0 likesI really like the random shots with the headset on your head. Looks very futute.
0 likesOhh now I regret buying my osvr for about the same price last year, this looks sooo much better ;((((
0 likesReplies (1)
explodingcamera and then you would regret buying this next year when the next device is out. Don't dwell too much on the past
0 likesSadly no controllers for each hand.
0 likesNow add PS move to it and you can have Vive like controllers, and head tracking
0 likesReplies (4)
The Move Controllers are Honestly shit.
1 likeI ain't playin' with no dil-do
0 likesexcept no headtracking because there are no leds or anything on the headset for the camera to track like on the rift and psvr.
0 likesYou can use 3 move controllers, and a camera. Then use 2 controllers are actual controllers, and the third one as head tracking.
0 likesThere is also osvr and thats made by razer and thats 120 hz
0 likesI want a review if your keyboard and controller that you showed in this video. I just can't get enough kliksphilip in my life.
0 likesI want the newer pi max 8k
0 likesOh Philip, you should have just waited until you could emulate PC VR on mobile headsets...
0 likesWill it work with DJI Mavic Pro??
0 likesDoes it come with motion controller?
0 likeswill it work with oculus touch?
0 likesYes but runs at 60Hz when the ideal is 90Hz.
0 likesWait... How did you play Vive games without the Vive controller?
0 likesI just bought an Oculus Rift for the same price as this...lol
0 likesI'd take the oculus out of the decision...
0 likesBut VR is no use without controllers...
0 likeshow do you get around so many of the Steam VR titles needing the motion controllers to work!?
0 likesReplies (1)
You might want to re-watch the video.
0 likesOculus and vive have room tracking, but this doesn't. It's basically cardboard with high quality screen.
0 likesBut can you use the htc vive controllers with it?
0 likesHonestly without room scale, higher frame rates and tracked controllers this is not VR. You are not experiencing VR at a lower price, just selling yourself short. Companies are ruining the VR market providing these subpar experiences. There is a big difference between room scale and having a monitor strapped to your face. It's night and day.
0 likesI have an AJazz Keyboard also. I've had it since September 2015 so my WASD, Shift, Ctrl, and Space keys are fading lol.
0 likesFor anyone reading these comments: Look at Windows Mixed Reality. It's a lot better, and a bit cheaper, but didn't exist a year and a half ago when this video came out.
0 likesJokes on you Philip, the VR support WAS for Half Life 3!
0 likesI've been told my field of view is wider that most, mine is wider than 180 degrees.
0 likesVR is still too expensive for the amount of fun you can get out of it , the so called ''games'' are simplistic and boring , often times you cant play for more than 1-2 hours because you''l get motion sickness. another 4-5 years and maybe VR will be worth the price.
0 likesi was thinking about your confusion abuot the 2k making the resolution look worse, don't forget the 4k is in fact 2x 2k lcd's one 2k per eye,
0 likesI was like, "how the f everyone on yt is a sound expert and knows to determine highs, mids and lows, while im yet to understand what they are" and then you got me. LOL, I love your humor.

0 likesDeal breaker is the no controllers
0 likesBROOO I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD THE SAME KEYBOARD AS YOU, that keyboard is honestly dope, if you're looking for a cheap mechanical keyboard, that keyboard is the AJAZZ AK33 and it's even got rgb lighting
0 likesWhen you were using it outdoors was the cable plugged into your phone?
0 likesno controllers! can very easily make up the price difference.

2 likes0:55 the encoding makes this look trippy as fuck
0 likesYou should try out Windows Mixed Reality
0 likesbetter and cheaper then PS4's PSVR
0 likesDeus Ex is sickening on all headsets.
1 likeThere is a program called Trinus VR that lets you use PSVR on PC. It's the cheapest way to get a good VR experience in my opinion.
0 likesReplies (2)
SmokedKittens81 I disagree that this is the cheapest for good VR.
0 likesAs the WMR headsets made by Asus and Lenovo are now $200. With an HMD stand-alone by Lenovo for $100.
WMR headsets are natively supported by most games now. So it’s probably better to pick one of those up.
However that still leaves the requirement of a good PC. So really the best budget VR is going to be the Oculus Quest.
@The Safehouse Yeah the Oculus Quest will probably be a better option.
0 likesI liked the pure pwnage reference when you were walking in public. Gave me some nostalgia and now I'm watching cooking with dave (He's pro at cooking)
0 likesThere is a problem with this headset....
0 likesrequired games support to use it on gaming ?
0 likesI want VR to be super Cheaper
0 likesThat may sound dumb, but couldnt you just use Wii remote controllers, instead?
0 likesI heard there is no head tracking in pimax. can you still look everywhere by moving your head?
0 likeswhy do you sponsor Gearbest?
1 likewhen i ordered this headset (6 weeks ago) they told me to wait for max 1 week before it would arrive, but here i am mailing them about order not coming and DHL doesn't even know about my order
and one of the explanations i got was that the ordered item was out of stock and there was high demand for it, but when i checked it on their site it said: 47 pieces left
300 dollars seems high now that the mixed reality headsets are out for 200? and has better software.
0 likesDo a review of the G900 (i saw you had one on your desk).
0 likesThis is China electronics at it's best.
0 likesSo basically, save up for htc vive. The compatibility is pretty bad it seems.
0 likesIf you have a google cardboard or similar device, use TrinusVR
0 likesHow about VRbox 2.0?
0 likesthis is cheap because no DOF tracking hardware. Pimax 8k version with all stuff exactly like htc vive is 800 $. Better decision i think is Samsung gearVR, or even coming asus tango - dream phone with dream hmd. Because it can use SLAM tracking with only camera
0 likesSeems to be great for VR porn. Most VR porn doesn't take advantage of neither positional tracking or motion-controllers, since they are just high-resolution 180 degree videoes. You get these features in a Vive or Oculus+Controllers, but not in the Pimax headset.
0 likesCan you get hand controllers separately?
0 likesReplies (3)
Yes, there is a demonstration video on YouTube.
0 likes@VR VIDEOS 3D So with a 5 dollar hand controller, this headset could be pretty great, right?
0 likesIt's even more great in combination with Nolo VR (motion controllers). Pimax 4K the best in image quality I seen so far. No screen door effect. Disadvantage: LCD instead of OLED = ghosting / higher latency / higher potential for motion sickness.
0 likesI would personally pay the extra sixty bucks for the occulus
0 likesI want eye tracking as well.
2 likesSuperb work dude. The cutting in the music is really distracting and annoying though. Sounds like the video is buffering. The producer was getting trigger happy with the fader...
0 likeswaaayyy too long of a vid, you start to say stuff you already said :/ for the rest nice video, love the idea of some cheaper vr competition
1 likeHow long did this take to edit?
0 likes359$ discount?
0 likesI can buy a PC with that
That's a strange looking PlayStation 2 controller.
0 likesIll wait another 10 years when VR is either widely adopted or dead.
0 likesBasically VR should be affordable plain and simple i've seen cheaper rip offs of the oculus rift that work with game consoles as well how hard is it to make side by side displays and slapping a working head tracking system with it? It's a marketing scam for people to buy there products and make it unfair to get a hold of.
0 likesI'd halt call it a budget they are all still a weeks wages or more for some
0 likesGreat video. Still waiting for Destruction Darius 2 :)

Douwert PlayStation Move controllers work with some hacking, or there's the upcoming Nolo VR which adds motion controllers and positional tracking stations.

0 likesReplies (1)
I have a modern comp with onboard graphics and the headset wouldnt work in pimax mode, so ended up in extended mode - which was rubbish. I brought a 4GB gtx card and now it is 'capable' but still not best suited for games, but video is perfect and I use the headset for this purpose.
0 likesIf you focus on one side of the video, it will feel 3d xD
0 likesPhilip, would the Pimax work with Resident Evil 7?
0 likesReplies (3)
There is a PC version.
0 likesThat's interesting, I didn't know that the VR aspects of the game was a timed exclusive. I was surprised by how little support was in the game by default anyways, so this makes a lot more sense. Ty for the info.
1 likeYou can use Tridef 3D to play RE7 on Pimax 4K. Of course, it's not the same VR quality as native VR support but it works good :)
0 likesIs there any chance of you giving link and doing video about that keyboard you get yourself? ;D
0 likesWhat am I supposed to use for a controller?

0 likeswell then vr is pretty much uselsess for the next few years or more :/
0 likesAs a Vive owner, you will not want to play fps games like that with a VR headset.
1 likeThis is a result of our brains getting confused when faced with the differing opinions on movement between your eyes and your inner ear, one saying you are standing still and the other saying you are moving.
0 likesOculus is far superior, save up the extra $200 or buy one second hand.

In what way?
0 likesWell, you have the option of Touch Controllers, which are literally game changing. plus you get the advantage of a well-known company, plus that one looks kinda cheap and flimsy...
0 likesI have an Oculus Rift and it's AMAZING, and I can't imagine anything better.
EnderTech599 Gaming HTC is proven company. The Rift was a kick starter, not a "proven" company.
0 likesI said well-known.
0 likesno positional tracking is already a dealbreaker for me, even when just using vr while sitting.
0 likesNow thats a good explantion

0 likesWell the occulus and vive is made in china so i dont see why not.

0 likesWhat still amazes me is how these people are able to offer this arguably pretty great 4k VR gear but aren't able to produce proper english on their site. If you aren't good in english, maybe hire a translater for 12 dollar per hour? The crappy english is what's most off putting of this device.

0 likesReviewer claims "i dont have neither oculus or vive" and continues on to give ppl honest review and comparison?
0 likesReplies (1)

0 likesHave now seen alot of videos where they praise this headset.

Games For Cykits Had a friend who did cheap VR with the PlayStation eye and camera stuff... You get what you pay for in that...
1 likeHonestly WMR or Oculus Quest all the way for cheap VR.
Though now Pimax makes a VR headset like the Vive that has two 4K screens at 120 FOV. So it’s hard not to be tempted to pay the extra for laser tracking, and better screens.

0 likesWhat do you mean? Just headset or with controllers and stations?
0 likesWell, the Pimax is only without controllers, but it is not made for the same type of games. The Pimax, I would say is more for racing games, where you already have a wheel or stuff like that. But the problem is that HDMI doesnät support 60Hz at 4K. So you will basicly run it at 30Hz

0 likesHey Phillip, there are strange artifacts on you your video, probably some optical flow retime plugins is causing that, when motion is fast, it causes strange artifacts around objects in the video. Especially visible on your video typing on mechanical keyboard. It causes me a headache, can you just not use this in the future please? It is really annoying.
3 likesI have a vive and a oculus and this . Don't get this headset! It plays at a max of 30fps and it sucks! Save the money and get a oculus or a vive.

"Save the money" "oculus, vive" yeah, sure.
34 likesVoid of Space and Time as in save up it's worth the extra price for for the quality. Fps,image quality, every thing is better on the oculus and rift
3 likes@8 Lives I wouldn't say image quality is better. As he already showcased, screendoor is much reduced on a 4k headset.
8 likesVoid of Space and Time but is it? He stated in the video he doesn't own a oculus or vive and hasn't worn one in months I honestly have never Have never noticed it on any of the 3 headsets.
1 like@8 Lives From an image comparing vive and this headset, it seems that it is almost unseeable from afar. Not sure about up close.
1 like+8 Lives it is very noticable if you look for it.
1 like@BlindingShotz or if you just put the headset on and have 20/20 vision still.
1 likeHDMI 1.4 which they use doesn't support 4K on 30hz, so you'll have to lower the resolution to get 60hz. I think.
3 likesIt won't be a real 4K, then, but even interpolated 4K should look better than 1080p.
8 Lives rekd
7 likesMake sure you're using DisplayPort 1.2 as it is the minimum to display 4k at 60 fps
1 likethat's not necessarily due to the framerate tho.
0 likesPimax sucks. Without positional tracking, or controllers it's just an improved oculus dk1. Even worse than the dk2 imo
1 likeno it should play at 60
0 likesDo not i repeat DO NOT buy one of these headsets.
4 likesAll these "reviews" about this rubbish item are definately being sponsored by Pimax, without a doubt because it really is such a rubbish, unfit for purpose, item.

But it is enough for VRChat...
1 likeGo go vr chat!!
0 likesSamsung vr is great I played minecraft vr and it felt so weird
0 likesit's cheap because it's made by children.

yurtpoh Can you prove that?
0 likesyurtpoh So every and all Chinese companies use child labour? No.
5 likesJust because they are a Chinese company doesn't automatically mean use Child labour.
Don't be ignorant.

4 likesJust because they are a Chinese company doesn't automatically mean use Child labour.
Don't be ignorant.
how do you think this shit is so cheap if it wasn't for underpaid workers or child labor?
0 likesthink a little.
yurtpoh no advertising, cheaply made software, and generic parts.
1 likeno advertising? what is this video?
0 likescheap software? i can't imagine the Vive having "expensive" software.
generic parts? i'm pretty sure HTC is a company that uses generic parts. they're not like Apple (which, funny enough, also uses child labor).
That's racist tbh
1 likeit's not racist at all.
2 likesquit reaching.
@yurtpoh steamVR is not cheaply made software.
1 likeregardless, this Chinese off-brand will use the same exact software (or else it wouldn't be comparable with the Vive)... so their price cuts are coming from some other department.
0 likesYou have no evidence to prove that it was manufactured using child labour, so don't try to convince people that what you are saying is fact.
7 likesit took several years for Apple to be outed as exploiting child labor... you would have probably said the same shit about Apple before 2011. the fact is that if it's cheap from china, then it's either a knock-off brand like a fake Apple that has the apple logo without a bite in it, or the company is exploiting child labor and sweat shops... or both...
0 likesit's honestly pretty naive to think that you can get an equal-quality VR set for half the price it costs here WITHOUT any catch.
just because i'm not on some international investigative team doesn't mean it's not true.
4 likesthe evidence is that China is the world's leader in child labor and socially unacceptable working conditions.
0 likeschoosing to ignore it doesn't make it any less true.
@yurtpoh can you share this evidence?
0 likeshttp://www.voicesofyouth.org/en/posts/child-labor-in-china
0 likesyeah i know... google is hard to use...
not to mention, i DID post two links above already... it's not that hard to look.
yurtpoh That is not evidence that this company uses child labour.
3 likes+yurtpoh stop trying to spread your false western propaganda.
3 likes"false western propaganda." - yeah i remember being a pretentious teenager in high school.
0 likes+MrKmanStudios - so they're clearly going to make a few million before anyone finds hard evidence simply because people don't want to believe in precedent... LUL
+yurtpoh lol you're the only person who believes it. If you have real evidence tell me the exact name and location where the VR is produced.
1 likei'm definitely not the only person who believes that China exploits child labor... seriously... educate yourself...
0 likesaaaaaand you've just proven the point i made in my last comment...
1 likeyou know you can scroll 11 comments up and see my answer to this question that has already been asked.
0 likesyurtpoh duh I have. None of them answer my question. The 'internet' is not a credible source.
0 likes2kliksphilip Exactly.
0 likes2kliksphilip - to be fair i never said expensive things "aren't"...
0 likesbut if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is... for instance, if it's so cheap compared to all it's allegedly equal competitors, then what's the harm in being mindful of a catch? clearly something is up, because successful tech companies don't mark things up over 100% just for profit. vote with your dollar.
0 likesAlso, during your life, exactly how many children have you met that could assemble and solder small complex electronic parts....
0 likesYou totally missed the point, it matters not were you buy from, the small parts used to make whatever or whomever you buy are from low paid badly treated factories, and nobody, including you, can avoid this.
0 likesI was at a shoe factory producing cheap to luxury brands in China with over 70,000 employees due to work for over 2 months, there were no signs of child labor.
0 likesexcept your analogy falls apart because of statistics.
0 likesand 70k people in a country of 1.3b is nothing.
So you are sticking to the version where you have concrete evidence specifically about Pimax that they use child labor, and the company I worked at is the only company in China that does not employ child labor?
0 likesno i'm sticking to the version where unheard-of low prices typically mean there's a catch that may or may not be entirely legal.
0 likeschild labor and poor work environments are just the easiest go-to for a chinese company since there is precedent.
0 likesyeah, key word: "history" ..... china is one that still DOES
0 likeslmao. holy shit, 30% off is much different than 65% off of an alleged equal competitor.
and that's the thing is that Pimax is advertising itself as equal to the Oculus. philip even said it's hard to tell the difference... so if the quality is roughly the same, then where are they cutting expenses?
0 likesit's only "shifting the goalpost" if you've got tunnel vision.
0 likespimax is half the price of an oculus, not 65%. idk where you got that number. and since you were wrong about that one, it's safe to say that spacex isn't 70% off.
