Analyzing Star Swirl's Spell

I reckon star swirl was trying to turn himself into an alicorn.

Star swirl the bearded was a gifted unicorn. But he was ambitious. And he was extremely envious of the princesses powers. So one day, he wrote a spell. Let's break it down...
From one to another, another to one. Meant to transfer the princesses power to him. Giving the power 'from one to another'
A mark of ones destiny. A cutie mark. Or in star swirl's case, the wings he was hoping to gain.
Singled out alone, fulfilled. He was to be singled out alone, and fulfill his destiny, which he thought was becoming an alicorn.

But, star swirl wrote the last line in the spell wrong. Singled out alone, fulfilled. When he cast the spell, magic swirled around him, lifting him into the air. The spell went as planned, until he said the last line. There was a burst of light, and star swirl was lowered to the ground. But not as a unicorn, as a draconeques. He was singled out alone. Now the only one of his kind. He renamed himself discord, and vowed to wreak havoc on all of equestria, envious forevermore of the princesses power. But mind you, he still had a soft spot for celestia though.

But for what purpose would Starswirl even create such a spell

I have a theory about what would have happened if nightmare moon hadn't broken the other element stones, making them shards. This is only because twilight's element was the only whole element. If the other element stones hadn't been broken, would the other five have crowns like twilight? Just a thought.

Well, buck. Now I have to pick up the remaining pieces of my brain from the floor and walls... oh look, there's one stuck to the ceiling. Now how am I supposed to get that? Congratu-pony-lations, TBN. You did catch me off-guard.

On the other hand, though, I'm having a hard time trying to figure out Star Swirl's role in the Equestrian history after the season 4 finale. Was he really just an unicorn magician? Gotta watch some episodes again.

Great theory as usual, but here’s something I’ve like to point out for those who didn’t notice it, when the elements first reformed in the shapes of their new bearer’s cutie marks 5 of the 6 took on the form of necklaces while the element of magic not only went completely unchanged in how the gem itself looked, but it went atop a crown unlike the others and this was before Twilight became a Alicorn, I’m almost certain the elements knew Twilight was destined to become an Alicorn so her element adjusted itself to befit royalty, and notice how the element of magic started reacting the moment Starswirl’s spell was spoken and changed the other element, you gotta remember Starswirl help create the elements so it would make sense the spirit that connects them would be to recognize the work of the pony who created them, not only that, but it was the element of magic that started the process for Twilight to become a princess and by extension save the tree of harmony as she did need a bit of a confidence boost if you ask me

Am I the only one who noticed that when Twilight's friends were calling to her, their shadows where walking?

Star swirl could travel time. Right? Could i be that star swirl already knew what would happen and wrote that part to make it happen. Maybe Discord is really star swirl and he is guiding her to fulfill the destiny :D Maybe that destiny is that he will become the king of equestria main antagonist. :)

I have a theory, here is: (It ties in with the 'Discord=Starswirl theory)
Imagine how it would be if you were a powerful unicorn, but, two princesses were suddenly born, alicorns, more powerful then you? Would probably be annoying, right? Well, think of this: Starswirl wanted to be an Alicorn to have more power, so, he created this spell and became Discord. This makes sense, as in the spell it says: A mark of ones Destiny, his destiny was to be a powerful spellcaster. But then it says, "Singled out Alone fullfilled" He had no friends, and he was "Singled Out Alone", so their was no other people. Maybe, since the spell had no one else to go to, the spell turned him into a mix of all other animals, See where I'm getting at? 

THis still doesn't explain starswirl's intentions in creating the spell...

also the meaning of an amethyst may play a role in this, Twi's element is a star, composed by Amethyst, which is a stone that can bring prosperity, enhancing magical ability and pureness, also known for increasing psychic abilities

You may have actually put the final patch in the story I've been trying to get out of my head for a while. The heal/face turn of Discord was a little too abrupt in my opinion and I had always looked for a way to make it seem a little more natural. Discord trying to create a friend and having that friend turn on him (because you can't force someones friendship it must be earned) would be the origin of the lessen he learns in "Flutter On"
The problem I kept running into was "why" he would do that, I mean I could always chalk it up to "chaos" and my original moral held that chaos it's self can neither be good nor bad, because the friend Discord created was indeed chaotic but not evil, but that always felt lazy.
So check this idea. Star Swirl after creating the spell from "MMC" ends up in a mixed up bizzare body, in a last ditch effort to fix himself he get's the idea that it may take multiple ponies with multiple cutie marks to finish the spell. The end result is "Patch Work" who has lost his mark and the backfire of the spell causes Star Swirl to loose what little sanity he has left. Remembering little except that he feels Patch is "his" in some way he tries to force a friendship on the one creature that wants nothing to do with him. They part company chaos ensues, etc.etc.
Hmm, Yep a writers block finally tumbled. Now to write it up. . . and hide it where no one can see it, cause it seems only a very select few are permitted to actually write fanfic that won't immediately get tossed in the trash.

Okay, I have to point this out. On twilight's cutie mark, there is five stars surrounding the main one. When you put the mark against the tree of harmony, I realized that the small stars go in the same direction as the branches of the tree, where the other elements go. Another, less complicated explanation, the small stars can represent her friends. Tell me about what you think about this theory.

So perhaps starswirl was trying to make a spell that would utilize the power of the elements of harmony. Maybe the spell was made after celestia and luna lost their connection to the elements and starswirl didn't want Equestria to go on without it's greatest weapon against evil. I'd like to say the spell didn't turn starswirl into discord because how the spell is worded, he knows he needs the aid of other ponies for it to work, or the elements themselves, but then it would have resulted in an accident similar to magical mystery cure. Also the spell itself doesn't turn one into an alicorn, it transported Twilight, and it was celestia's magic that activated Twilight's ascension. So was starswirl's spell just something to focus the power held by the elements into something greater?

I have a theory of where the spark came from (I don't have much info yet). When I saw a glow with the sound of kind of like a spark, it was in Twilight's eyes. When I saw the second spark before she fixed the spell, it was in her eyes. So I think that the spark comes from somewhere inside Twilight, or her very spirit, which activates her element of magic. I think there might be a connection between her element and her destiny that helped her become the princess she is today. Think about it. The elements of harmony definetly helped her and her friends in a lot of situations, which is when their spirits activated the elements of harmony. But when they defeat Tyrek, (I hope I spelled his name right), it seemed that they couldn't activate the elements of harmony, because they gave them up to the tree of harmony. But when they put the keys in the box, they suddenly transform and defeat him, but this time they weren't wearing the elements of harmony. It's like as if the elements of harmony activated the spirits of the elements of harmony.

i always thought
"from one element to another, another to one, one alone's destiny is fulfilled."
Which means switching the elements and one's destiny is fulfilled, meaning the other 5 might have more of a purpose, since twi was singled out alone, her destint fulfilled.

Damn it, I liked the fan art of Starswirl before he was officially in the show. I think the darker coat, golden eyes, and generally more intimidating fan art (like the thumbnail of this video) would be more suited for his appearance in the show than the dorky dude with a short beard, far too gangly legs and just pathetic Starswirl we got in the show. Damn you, Hasbro.

I've just watched this again now and I find you missed a spot:
At the time Star Swirl's spell was written there were no six ponies to bare the elements, only two princesses.
So why was there a need for one to be singled out alone and who was that one supposed to be?
Was it Celestia or Nightmare Moon who commissioned this spell to help overthrown the other sister? Or was it Star Swirl's own attempt to take power?

Here's one thing that I guess you could also add to this theory, that one clip where Princess Celestia tells Twilight that "Starswirl didn't understand friendship" like she did. But in the book expanding on the Diary of the Two Sisters, It looked like Starswirl was good friends with Tia and Luna, and he was also friends with Tirek's brother. At first I thought Celestia was lying to Twilight for the purposes of the "Princess Test". But then I realized there wasn't any point to that. And then I thought that what she said was true, but not really expanded on. Maybe only the True Element of Magic/Friendship could complete the spell, hence enhancing the destiny prospect of Twilight in Magical Mystery Cure. Food for thought I guess.

Like Twilight, Cadence got her cutie mark before she found out what the entire point of it was. I also think that that one pony said "Behold the crystal princess" was implying that the ponies already knew about the Crystal Princess and was waiting on Cadence to save them all from their suffering or there was another "Crystal Princess" before Cadence that's why I assume that Twilight still must find out why she has her cutie mark is for aside from Magical Mystery Cure and Twilights Kingdom. Besides remember the magical aura that was on Cadences cutie mark when she was activating the Crystal Heart, Twilight still must do the same to confirm her destiny

Hmmm. Interesting. I didn't consider Twilight's ascension to be fulfillment of her mark explicitly. Guess I always viewed her as the larger star because the other 5 were there to help her grow in so many ways. Your interpretation of Star Swirl's spell makes it seem like he just wrote the plot for the episode though. I think it had personal meaning to him.

Here's my take on Star Swirl's spell.

Firstly, I believe Twilight "fixed" the spell by writing a new answer rather than completing the old one. In fact, they're answers are complete opposites in my eyes.

Star Swirl strictly followed the path of a scholar to its final conclusion. His unfinished masterpiece (From one to another, another to one. A mark of one's destiny, singled out alone, fulfilled) represents his approach to life. To reach one's full potential, he believed isolation and training held the key. As his verse describes a solitary journey of accumulation, Star Swirl gained arcane magic for his own sake. This granted him a wealth of knowledge about those types of magic, but little about the magic born through bonds with others (a.k.a. friendship magic).

Just how Star Swirl represents the culmination of only seeking knowledge, Twilight reveals an alternative answer. As a pony who began following a similar path, Twilight would have reached a similar ending; however, the guidance of her friends and Princess Celestia sparked a change of heart. After experiencing the magic of friendship, Twilight continued magical studies while forging ever deepening bonds with her friends. Thus, giving birth to a new answer that Star Swirl couldn't conceive. "From all of us together, together we're friends. With the marks of our destinies made one, there is magic without end". Sharing their lives with one another has intertwined their fates- giving birth to magic that grows without limit: friendship.

Since Star Swirl aimed to answer how to lead a fulfilling life, and fulfill one's destiny, the spell sets you on the path he followed. Singled out alone to focus on your goal without distraction. This made the Elements of Harmony a prime target since it symbolizes the unison of different elements/ponies to achieve something none could accomplish alone; however, Star Swirl would have believed this held them back, a sentiment Twilight expressed at the start of the series. And while only the five pillars of the Elements of Harmony had their cutie marks swapped, the citizens of Ponyville were also emotionally separated and argued with one another - which makes sense since "the elements of harmony" were thrown into disarray. It's the connection between ponies that makes Equestria such a magical place, and gave birth to the land in the first place. Friendship is what brings about the elusive sixth element; an answer that evaded Star Swirl because of how far he'd walked alone: Friendship is Magic.

I just want to add, that one, you have pushed me off neutrality and have gotten me to decide to learn more about the backstory and all that of mlp. Second, if you analyze Twilights cutie mark, you notice 5 stars, which from what i assume represent that in order to fulfil her destiny, she requires the help of five other ponies, her friends. it isn't a huge or significant fact, but it explains that her friends were required in playing a role of her destiny

I HAVE A THEORY, AND IT'S A DOOSEY.
So, let's look at Starswirl and Clover. In 'Hearth's Warming Eve', we saw Clover could in some way wield/manipulate the magic of friendship and get rid of the Windigos. At this point, she was still Starswirl's apprentice, and we can safely think it's very likely he enjoyed having such a lot of magical power. He of course will have learnt of the spell she cast, and thought she was far more powerful than him, and with the preliminary feeling of enjoying power meant he now felt he could take the power she had from her so he could be that much more magical himself. He thought about how he'd go about this and concluded he should take her Cutie Mark from her (since it seems the most easily manipulated magical aspect of ponies, for instance Starlight Glimmer) in order to get her magic.
He started devising a spell to do so, which ended up abandoned as he couldn't get it right to do what he wanted. When we look at his spell, "From one to another, another to one (him swapping with Clover), a mark of one's destiny (their Cutie Marks), singled out alone (I'll get to this one xD), fulfilled (he saw being very magical as being his destiny, so it'd be fulfilled). As for 'singled out alone', even though this related highly to Twilight's element in 'Magical Mystery Cure', it may have related to him having no friends. When we think about it, if he realised that friendship ignited Clover's power, he wouldn't try and steal it but instead realize friendship himself. Although, I find it uncanny both ways the spell was used ended up involving a pony very adept in the magic of friendship.
Hm, I feel like I filled a gap of knowledge but to no impact. Oh well, I think this theory is great xD

I would love to know you view on how Celestial and Luna were able to use the elements of harmony on their own. For twilight there is only one pony per element, yet the princesses somehow could use all of them. Is this why magic worked in the equestria girls? Does alicorn magic have enough strength to use all six?

A little late to the party I guess, and this might have already been said, but I feel the need to draw on a few of your videos here.
So the spell, as Starswirl wrote it, was essentially to help fulfill one's destiny. Cadence and Twilight always thought they had done everything to fulfill theirs, but then we got an episode out of finding out they didn't. Starswirl could have had the idea he was missing something in life and forged the spell to help him find it. Then boom, your Discord=Starswirl series takes from there. Doesn't that all seem to fit?
Now, I sincerely doubt anyone on the staff would ever think of that, but it's like you said. They haven't said anything on it yet, so nothing in the story we've been given so far says it didn't happen.

Fixing what I previously said,
 it seems like a switch spell, like in a movie of which I can't remember, where a spell caster uses a spell to swap places with someone to live longer. in this sense, Star Swirled used it to switch with another pony due to his old appearance.
maybe the spell isn't unfinished, but unwritten. perhaps he did use the spell to switch with someone and forgot to write the finished product down.........or, taking Discord's side, he didn't have a chance to due to some  alicorn otherwise known as an eidolon, false god, i.e. Celestia and her sister, Luna.
one reason Star swirled might have had trouble with this spell is that he notes "a mark of ones destiny, singled out alone, fulfilled" has two interpretations.
1. he wanted to switch the destiny (cutie mark) with him so he could keep his fate the same.
2.he wanted Equestrians to have only one cutie mark ,therefore only one fate....... wow! star swirled is evil. fact proven
     that last part was a stretch but literally, in this sense, it means the transposition of a fulfilled cute mark from one to another (and so on) this part is debatable.

Let me throw a wild idea everyone's way:

What if the spell actually wasn't incomplete, and Celestia merely failed to comprehend what it was truly for; hence dubbing it unfinished.

If the spell was in fact unfinished, why did it successfully target something and act upon it? That sounds like all the elements of a complete spell. Perhaps the only reason it didn't work as intended was that Twilight callously read the spell aloud without a focal point.

Now for the second part of my wild idea: consider Discord for a moment. He's supposed to be the mischievious spirit of Chaos (Celestia's own words). This is not so much a being as it is a fundamental force of nature, by design. Yet Discord from what has been known of him thusfar in history has shown him merely to be a trickster; a being with Godlike power who refuses to kill IN SPITE of being the very aspect of something that shouldn't care about life or death.

My hypothesis from these two pieces of intel plus the timeline presented? Starswirl crafted this spell when the TRUE spirit of Chaos began terrorizing the land thousands of years ago. In doing so he condemned himself to a hellish enternal existence where he would never be able to die and would lose himself; becoming another being altogether...

...BUT it would also trap the spirit of Chaos within a somewhat limiting physical form, provide it a sentient conscious with a comparitively strong sense of ethos, and alter its destiny in reality overall.

And thus, DISCORD was truly born. An amalgam of the true spirit of Chaos, the sacrificed spirit of Starswirl the Bearded, and one "unfinished" spell designed to make this sacrifice work.

I loved this video but I realized once you said twilights cutie mark was on the tree of harmony before she had ever come to see it well I realized that the same thing happened to cadence so shouldn't it have been obvious that the tree of harmony would have become her new home in ponyville some how

The Unfinished spell was actually written by an imposter posing as Starswirl the Bearded and this imposter Starswirl is the true hidden main antagonist of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic

(i actually think the whole elements being in one was meant to represent the tree of harmony needing the elements back but i do like your idea on it ^^)

well after watching this a few times i saw why she had the 6th elemant of harmony i her eye,it was because she did something that followed her destiny.

Seeing as the show is now finished there is one thing that bothers me. When twilight finished the spell and cast it we are never shown what the spell actually did. I'm sure many say it turned her into an alicorn but I felt it was pretty clear that Celestia did that. So I have the theory that the spell when it basically killed her or whatever it did when it transported her to what ever realm celestia was in took twilights and the other 5 main characters values storing them in the elements and when they put the elements back into the tree gave the tree sentience. After that the tree started to do things on its own, making the box and growing all kinds of buildings and giving test and stuff. Its just a theory and needs to be cleaned up a bit but its the only explanation i really have as to why the tree and elements weren't already sentient for the last 1000 years but now all of a sudden are. It used the new spell which was friendship magic to gain sentience and become like their own friend in a way. Just a thought...

I didn't realize till just now, but when the elements of harmony get "assigned" to the main six, the 5 of honesty, loyalty, generosity, laughter, and kindness became necklaces.

But with Twilight's element of magic, it became a crown. Part of it may be due to how big it is compared to the others, but anyone else think that the crown could be foreshadowing, from the start, that she'd become a princess later on?

Remember in the season 4 premier, Discord told twilight, that he helped her learn a valuable lesson in friendship/being a princess? Well if what you say is true, the probability of the discord-star swirl relation got boosted to 70% in my mind, since star swirl wrote the spell to help twilight become a princess.

Watching this episode after not watching mlp or you in years, my jaw is dropped. I’ve never slapped my mouth in shock so hard.

Its bothered me for a while this spell actually. Ive always argued she should have been the Princess of HARMONY. Because - she combines the elements. When the last part of the spell is cast the power of the other elements shoots INTO her, almost like they are powering her up.
The spell itself 'marks of our destinies made one'. The others' cutie marks represent their destinies AND their elements. So if their destinies become one, why not the elements? Could Twilight be wielding the power of all 6 elements?
Lastly - even Princess Celestia says she has all the qualities of a princess (using words for the elements as she goes, AND the 'camera' zooms in on the corresponding pony)

Here is a question, what was Star Swirl trying to do when he created that spell that was "unfinished". He didn't have any friends in witch to mess up the cutie marks, he also doesn't have any connection to the elements of harmony so he wasn't trying to do anything with them so it was probably a coincidence that when twilight used the spell that it just so happen to do the mane six. Unless Star Swril was perposly trying to mess with Celesta and Luna witch held the elements in those days. Another question is what dose Twilight's new spell (That justifies her becoming a princess) actually do besides fix star swirl's broken spell. What if she her new spell again when their destinies aren't switched up?

Alternate idea (and to go along with the whole Discord=Starswirl):

The reason the spell is unfinished is when Starswirl first made the spell and said it, it TURNED HIM IN TO DISCORD. Think about it. This spell does nothing but create CHAOS. And since there is no evidence that Starswirl had friends for this spell to backfire on, the spell backfired onto him, making him chaos incarnate, aka Discord. Just a thought. Also, since Discord is still around, the same transformation would not happen to Twilight since she had friends for this to affect. I have a longer explanation for this, but that's the shorthand of it. Also, I have a 'theory of everything' for the series that takes into account alot of your theories. 

I never really payed attention to the spell star swirl had made, now i have a reason to, when it says "There is magic without end" i get what that means, it means that there is FRIENDSHIP with out end. "singled out alone, fulfilled" This spell was always confusing to me, i actually never cared, pony notion has brought more knowledge to me about MLP than any other person i've ever watched. That line meant that, what notion said, her element/cutie mark stayed untouched, and when she finishes the spell and brings her friends back together, like when discord changed them, she fulfills her destiny to be the princess of friendship, or to just fulfill her destiny to become the fourth princess. That's all very nice, but what did Star Swirl intend the spell to DO exactly? I think he wanted to find a way to activate the Elements of Harmony.

My theory is Starswirl is so powerful he can change forms. He was Mr. Moochick, then he was a female earth pony, in these stories he is as he should be.

Star Swirl's spell sounds more like a prophecy than a spell. Twilight fulfilled her destiny long after she got her cutiemark. It sounds like Star Swirl had some sort vision or a blurred dream that made him write this spell/prophecy. Also I think Cadence saw the Crystal Empire when she was just a little foal. Maybe she was born there as a royalty but born a pegasus and later got her alicorn status when Celestia adopted her as her royal niece. Just think of that pony who called her the "crystal princess." Maybe he recognized her from the Crystaling when Cadence was born.

and Celestica had to of already know her destiny because she was the one that sent her the book. She has been there since the beginning of the show to the end of season 4, guiding Twilight by either giving her info or by sending her the things she needed on her quest to become a princess.

Call the rainbow a 'Karma Blast.'
Twilight also got a much bigger 'spark' in her eyes after thinking about her friends in 'Magical Mystery Cure.' This could be counted as a 'sparkle fulfilled.' And didn't Rarity say "Sparkles always does the job" in the pilot?

Quick question- how did Star Swirl know what Twilight's destiny would be long before she existed? We know that Pinkie is probably psychic, but what about others? Like possibly Star Swirl?

Twilight...'Spark'-le.... Hmm... An easy coincidence?-or not... I may sound very silly here, but maybe Star Swirl predicted that one day, the six would be created, maybe even he created their destinies somehow with a spark. Maybe Twilight went back in time and told the wizard to never finish the spell on purpose, so time would stay as it is. So Twilight can one day learn that one important lesson and finish the spell. And if he did create Twilight somehow with a crazy prediction, maybe he made her name from her going back in time and telling him. Like, that one episode from the powerpuff girls :P . . . I dunno really, but it does seem that Twilight makes so many imprints in history...she's so important. It just makes me think that she was made for a reason. . .

My thoughts on the cutie mark swap: How in the hoof does it even work? I mean if you look back to the cutie mark chronicles it showed how each of the mane 6 earned they're cutie marks. Rainbow Dash got hers by winning the FLYING race with a Sonic Rainboom in Cloudsdale. Rarity's is to locate gems by using her MAGIC. As shown in Magical Mystery Cure, Rarity had Rainbow Dash's CM and Applejack had Rarity's. Rarity isn't a Pegasus and AJ isn't a Unicorn, how were they supposed to "earn" they're "CM

The real mystery is, why would starswirl create this spell in the first place? What purpose does it have? My theory is that he maybe made the spell to help celestia and luna. He could have seen them growing apart, as well as luna's gealousy, and tried to swich their cutie marks to get them both to see how it was from eachothers points of view. This is just my idea, but I dont really see the last line of starswirl's part of the spell fitting into this.

Did you know that the six white lines of the pink star resembles the small white stars which sum up and make a bigger version of it. The pink star represents the element of magic which is her destiny,to be a alicorn /princess. This is what her cutie mark means

You keep saying the Element of Magic is in the shape of Twilight's cutie mark, but maybe you got that backwards. Cadence's cutie mark is in the shape of the Crystal Heart, an item she had never seen before she got her mark. Well,for the magical mystery cure episode,at one point two ponies had the same cutiemark,like when fluttershy realized her destiny wasnt being a party animal,Dash had her cutiemark! In my opinion,i would have thought it would have set of a chain reaction,since two ponies having the same cutiemark was never heard of...also if Discord is Starswirl,then why arent there mant clues for him being Starry? In my opinion,i would think when Fluttershy made him realize that he had no friends,I was hoping later in the episode,he would ask Twilight to talk to him in private and the  tell her everything that happened and that he is Starswirl the Bearded and that he was sorry for what was going to happen next....also i have a theory: So,we all saw how the ponies got their marks,right?well,Applejack got hers much differently from the others,but,Rarity is the same.Apple and Rarity were far from their home/hometown when they got their cutiemarks(yes i know AppleJack was home when she got hers,but she REALIZED that she should go back,if she never realized that,then she wouldn't have gotten her cutiemark,or atleast the one she has now) Rarity was simply letting her horn drag her to the dumb rock,and she got HER cutiemark then.Why am I repeating all of this?Well,everyone knows how AJ and Rarity didn't like eachother,and are now begining to like eachother more and more every episode with them in it?What if they were long lost sisters or cousins?Since AJ's parents are missing,and Rarity's parents are always on vacation! It would make sense considering the fact they would help eachother out a lot( like the sisterhooves social) and are begining to like eachother more.Maybe on time off they meet up and tell eachother things about themselves.Heck,if AJ stayed where she was a filly,then she would have gotten a fancy lookng cutiemark like Rarity's! I think you just answered your own question about the aura, the one on twilight and the other on cadence, they fulfilled their ultimate goal.

This is my thought:Twilight's elemant is the connection beetween all elemants,the rainbow had all the basic colors of the mane six, showing the elemants and the tree are all connected to their freirndship and alone, it all makes sense. Just a hunch ;)

Is it just me, or when twilight was ascended down from the bright light, there were 6 white stars instead of 5. In MLPEG 2, Sunset Shimmer was included in the band when she was needed, and helped defeat the Dazzlings (aka sirens), created the 7th color in the rainbow.  I think Sunset Shimmer was the 6th white star. 

Here is my theory but i think it's a little unconnected so yeah I think star swirl can see the future and all of this was meant to happen because star swirl somehow managed to see the elements of harmony and the harmony tree and he knew that was cutie mark of some pony and
he knew that twilight was the chosen one so to make sure celestia will chose twilight as the 4th princes he wrote an unfinished spell knowing that twilight will complete it and celestia will chose twilight to be the 4th princess

See I think their is someone who decides what cutie mark each pony should get so before Twilight got her cutie mark the symbol was used to represent a great (or big) kind of magic and when that someone saw the Twilight abilities so that someone put the same symbol as Twilight cutie mark

I believe that Starswirl's Unfinished spell was not really written by Starswirl the Bearded but an imposter posing as him and this imposter is the true hidden main antagonist and tricked Twilight into fixing the Unfinished spell

I think his spell was unfinished because he was banished before he was able to finish. I wish they would tell more about Starswirl The Bearded so we could know about him a lot more.Nice puns by the way.

I forgot to add this, SORRY. In hearts warming eve, Twilight acts has Star swirls student, and they also said that Celestia chose them for the play. Maybe, since Celestia was alive during these times, she meant for that to happen, so she learnt why it is bad to hate. Also, they say the storm was caused by hatred and disharmony. May star swirled died during this time and didn't want Twilight to die in the same way he did. I bring this out because at the end, you hear the things that make the storm outside, causing them to stop and Rainbow closes the window. Maybe it was not noticed, or maybe Mlp is going somewhere with this. I hope so

Well after the elements of harmony, the main 6's cutie marks, combined and shot at her, Twilight was made a princess. Combined or 'made one'. And Twilight represents magic, so 'magic without end', is maybe saying Twilight will become very powerful with her magic?

Well we can't be sure if Cadance seen Crystal Empire before or not. And creating sixth element is rather wrong word. Rather recreating. But beside this one this theory was quite good... but I'm dissapointed because You didn't even mention the topic of this what this finished spell really do. Really great analysis, but I have one question: what was the point in Star Swirl the Bearded's spell? Why would he create it? Before Twilight "finished" it, as she read it aloud, it did do something (switch the cutie marks around), which meant that it was still technically a spell. But why would Star Swirl make a spell like that, and why was it officially completed when Twilight added "friendship" to it? If the spell were to be said aloud again, what would happen? Also, why did it only switch the cutie marks of her friends? I'm really curious about this now and hope that maybe you could make a video about it.

I think star swirl made that spell on purpose and friendship ruined his evil master plan so he became discord and notice of how twilight sparkle has a crown and here friends don't. Well it makes scenes while she's a princess and whenever twilight got her cutie mark celestia was astonished by her power of magic and also to conclude this theory or whatever twilight didn't want to make friends just like star swirl I guess then everything changed when the elements of harmony came along. The spark is the one that is really the one that fullfilled the destiny. I know you said Celestia was the one who chose destiny in a previous episode, but let me explain;

The spark could happen to whoever came, giving them the right elements. But the so call 'spark' chose Twilight. The question is 'who made the spark.'
Well, Star Swirl of course! He knew this would happen, or at least knew there was a chance, so he created the 'spark'. He knew he wouldn't finish it, but he tried to spell anyway. Turning into discord, the spark remained. The 'spark' was the 'last chance of Star Swirled's pony form.' This is how he knew the spell must be changed by a pony with a friend. He noticed the connection between the 6, and let the spark be shown.

Do you realize what twilight did? She had NO IDEA what the spell did. And it was from one of the most powerful unicorns in history. AND SHE TESTED IT IN HER HOUSE TO SEE WHAT IT DID. Imagine if you got the worlds most powerful weapon and you set it off in your house to see what it does. Not very smart, huh?

my friend told me her idea to why the cutiemarks changed to who.
if Rainbowdash fell instead of doing her sonic rainboom then she would of been with the animals.
Fluttershy would still be in cloudsdale being made fun of because her weak flying, over time she would fail on purpose to make people laugh so she could laugh with them.
Applejack never seeing the rainbow to go home would of gotten into fashion
Pinkiepie being from a farm could of gotten her cutiemark in that after moving to ponyville.
and Rarity's is kinda iffy but her after being led to that rock and getting nothing and failing to get good enough costumes for the play could of been walking about when it started raining and she moved some clouds to avoid getting wet when she started messing around with them and got her cutiemark.

i don't think twilight's element of harmony is magic i think it's friendship in in season 2 episode 1 discord stole twilight's horn she should turn gray or something because she lost her element, but in part 2 she turned gray because she lost her friends, do some kind of theory on this or something.

Cadence's cutie mark did make sense. Her ability is the same as the actual Crystal Heart. She spreads love between ponies. So when she got her cutie mark, She knew her destiny. However, she didn't know that the Crystal Heart or the Crystal Empire existed until she had to go there and use it. Once she saw it, She knew. But not before then. The Crystal Heart being an actual relic didn't change the fact that she spread love between ponies. It just made her purpose even more grand because the Crystal Heart also spreads love throughout all of Equestria

before Twilight was born and before she figured out friendship the element of magic (element of harmony) was still her cutie mark but with the others the elements were only their colors and not their cutie marks.

i think star swirl tried to make the spell but he couldn't make it so he decided to wait until somepony had that spark to make it work and twilight was born with the destiny to finish it and be that spark.

You know thinking about this logically if you think that all the ponies destiny are pre determined then when you look at how ponies get their names and is pinkie pyshci then this may help you understand, pinkie since her special talent is to throw parties and helping cheer ponies up she may be actually able to either look at a pony or their cutie mark and be able to tell why their sad and help cheer them up but in doing so she must see their destiny to because the cutie mark defines them so it tells about the future and after throwing parties with everypony in Equestria she gathers a big picture but she is not consiussly doing this therefore if something is about to happen then she gets her pinkie sense.Now onto the naming of the babies that might also have to do with pinkie but if not then this may still apply to this situation so pinkie or mother by looking at the cutimarks of the parents can see maybe into the destiny of their child getting a whisper of who their offspring will be and if you check there may be episodes where when the pony gets their mark it might not be a suprise to the parents. But for now it's just a theory

um hate to be a bother, but as for picking apart the spell and Twilights addition to it, wouldn't the end of the spell be adding to her future as well? When the elements of harmony became one again with the Tree of harmony. This released the box and with it the test of their friendship proving it's strength and was rewarded with even greater magic to the point that they now sit at the round table in the crystal library castle. The Elements and each of the mane sixes destinies made one in sharing the throne and thus the responsibility of protecting, nurturing and guiding Equestria into another 1000 years of peace and harmony (also I get the feeling some filly is going to be named that in the next season.)
