A kind of French take - with English vocals - at the beginning of the 1970s hard-rock/"heavy psych" sound. Given that several magma members were involved (i.e. bassist Bernard Paganotti was a permanent member, and apparently the pre-mapped Christian Vander was involved in the early incarnation of the band), it would be expected to be a little proggish or freaky, but there are some proggy overtones.. and their use of jazzy vibraphones in a hard-rock context is very original. The first half (i.e. the first four songs) is really quite impressive and solid.. while the other half is more diverse, but still feels a little more unfocused. The production is booming, really powerful for today's French standards, and apart from the last song "Annabel Lee", which comes out a bit schmaltzy and ordinary, it's a pretty damn solid album.
Something clearer and not as poetic and personal as Ergo Sum's album, perhaps.. but really not far from being in the same stadium.ladislav&zivanovic.......A pleasant but easy album that captures the early moments of the growing French scene. We also got Marc Perra on guitar, he would play on ERGO SUM's only studio album in 1971 along with one of my favorite drummers Jean-My Truong who will continue to play for ZAO. Also Francois Breant is here on keyboards and I have his first solo album from 1978 called "Sons Optiques". Music has its moments, but overall I can't go more than 3 stars. Not surprising given the release date there are several songs like the title track and "Jungle Child" that sound very 60s. The "Big Bird" opener is a highlight for my ears even though it's such a dramatic piece. Vocals and multi-vocals on this one. Some vibrations from Breant and a guitar solo for about five minutes. This song is kind of cool, but there are miserable moments." What Did You Do?" is all about vocals, multi-vocals and piano. "Let's try" is a "Rock" tune. They're covering Steve Winwood's Gimme Some Lovin and it's not that good. Not even the one closer to Annabel Lee to be honest. Not bad, but it's not so good as far as my musical tastes are concerned.ladislav&zivanovic......
