Im really interested in an explanation of why they are locking windows down so much starting from windows 8. This reminds me of politics in the last 20-30 years . They banned stuff that was a little bit dangerous from the free market and boom more dangerous versions on the black market. Removing settings is the same. it pushes people who like to customize to sketchy mod software which are unstable.

I used to customize Windows XP to look like Windows Vista (of course without authorization from parents, which meant I had to revert everything back). People used to create and install unofficial theme that looks like newer Windows into their older Windows. Now it seems we're following an exactly opposite trend. Out of nostalgia perhaps, people are making themes for newer Windows that look like older Windows 🤣 Well, jokes on you, because if I want a trip back in time, I want the real deal instead :D
I’ve been rocking a windows 98 theme on my pc via windowblinds. Genuinely prefer it over how windows 10 looks. Not even for any sort of nostalgia, it’s just that 99% of apps I use feel right at home with it. So many windows apps still look like they haven’t been updated in 30 years so I’d rather have my os fit around them

Excellent, but looks like they still haven't figured out that menu size issue. I remember checking out the classic theme a year or so ago and it wasn't as good as this, but it also had that menu render problem. I would think you could just make an AutoIt script in the worst case scenario and have it scan for the handle of those menus and automatically resize them. There might be a better less buggy way to do it though.
Win10 1607 (maybe 1709 can) ran really nicely with no dwm using this sort of logon. I had the classic theme this way. Granted its still locked down then but I tried it on my rig and it worked really nicely. I assume you could do a finished clean image with some apps like volume2, winxshell to have metroless install.wim. dunno about dx12 but this does reduce full screen optimizations. But many games, older programs and games work just fine on that build, that are broken after b.1709 when MS introduced the timer changes into the kernel. So I'd recommend 1607 / 1709 for a project like this, 1709 more as some hardware has drivers that require the feature update.

Instead of dowloading a custom ISO i'd install the software to make it look like windows classic theme(or 98). Retrobar for the taskbar(it's much stable than SCT taskbar and has different styles including 98 style.) Simple classic theme for windows 10 or 11. Explorerpatcher(only for windows 11) Classic xp apps and games. Open shell menu. Windows 98 icon pack.

The themes from the late 90's and 00's may be uglier in a screenshot but holy crap are they good at structuring visual information. I think the peak was Snow Leopard/Mountain Lion era in OSX. Everything after that just got redesigned to look prettier while losing the ideas that made apps and OS's usable.

The UWP apps are isn't dead yet, but I tried to start it, but when I resized the Settings app it does work perfectly fine. except for the loading screen that can't removed after resized.
Windows 7 have built in classic theme. You can also disable dwm.exe. You can use ClassicShell for Start Menu. And you will get better results with 2 min of work.
i hope some one delete all necessary thing from windows 10 until remain just kernel and some necessary modules after that puts stolen xp source to windows 10 goest native classic windows but very modern and capabil.
I really miss old 9x/2000 style GUI. You could easily tell what is a button, textbox, dropdown. Now, everything is flat rectangle 😡. And windows had f-ing border more than 1px!

There is no reason for converting the taskbar at all, because you will have loss of functionality. It is much better to hide the Windows taskbar in desktop mode and use the RetroBar program. With it, you can replace the Windows taskbar fundamentally, besides you can choose a taskbar from all Windows OS since Windows 95.
This is the worst windows 98 theme ive ever seen in my life. First of all clientedge is not enabled in explorer second of all u used 2000's explorer buttons rather than 98's third uwp apps can run with classic theme you didnt put applicationframehost to start before the classic theme script starts. Third You didnt edit shellstyle.dll to remove the command bar and you didnt even apply a skin for quero and you didnt even modify context menus and console login still is in windows 10 just rename windows.ui.logon.dll. Overall i give this a 2/10

0 likesThis is the worst windows 98 theme ive ever seen in my life. First of all clientedge is not enabled in explorer second of all u used 2000's explorer buttons rather than 98's third uwp apps can run with classic theme you didnt put applicationframehost to start before the classic theme script starts. Third You didnt edit shellstyle.dll to remove the command bar and you didnt even apply a skin for quero and you didnt even modify context menus and console login still is in windows 10 just rename windows.ui.logon.dll. Overall i give this a 2/10
