Moondance, Lyra, minuette and the rest I think were meant to be fillies when the sunset flashbacks were happening, meaning it takes place about 10 years before the events of Friendship is magic. It's an estimate of course. As for time paradoxes of sunsets age, it is my belief the two worlds function differently with time.
At least it is until Twilight ties a new mirror to the magic within the book making a permanent portal.

Yeah this can't be cannon because sunset is going to school with moon dancer, minuet and others whose name I can't recall at the moment.(you know the ponies twilight went to school with as a filly at celestia's school of magic and are depicted as being about the same age in the show). Also sunset was celestia's student before twilight as stated by celestia herself. It's a great animation and an amazing story, it just doesn't fit in with the information we have in show. Still I give it 9.5/10.

The start of the video where you see Celestia and Luna being together is the present day, basically during the beggining of the Eqg movie. Then, Celestia goes to Twilight's room when she is sleeping with Spike (right before Sunset would come in and steal Twilight's crown). Then, Celestia goes to the mirror and then she touches it . When she does that, she remembers the old days with Sunset, that's when the flashback starts. All of Sunset's story is a flashback that Celestia remembers and then after the flashback ends, we're back to present day,Twilight going through the mirror. This backstory is from the comics
Every time I watch this particular MLP video, I cannot help but be in awe of the overall visual designs (characters and backgrounds). Even the voice acting is spot on, really good!

Basically it close to the canon story it takes place after the first EQG movie. Celestia has a flashback to the betrayal and on the other side of the portal sunset is having a nightmare. So the story switches between Sunset telling the girls and Celestia telling Luna.
It hints that the timeline of sunset Betrayal is the same day as the Sonic Rainboom event.
The comic has an scene where twilight as a little filly without a cutie mark is seen with Cadence who is an alicorn in the book.
They miss the twilight scene in this animation.
Believe or not Sunset Shimmer was a small girl after crossing. Which spawn the theory that portal turns you into the correct age as you are acting. Since Sunset was a grown or nearly an adult mare throwing a temper tantrum the portal turned her into a five year old girl. It isnāt shown but there is a flash and a scream. And on limited editions there is a line. I will have my revenge Celestia!

My understanding is that the first scene of her seeing twilight asleep and going to the mirror was present day, around the first eqg movie. then after she touches the mirror we enter a flashback to when sunset shimmer was still in equestria. then in the end when she touches the mirror again we go back to our right before twilight goes to canterlot high.
Friendship is the most important and difficult thing to master in MLP... and real life. Seriously though, the person who made this should be in charge of animating a full length feature with a high budget. Imagine what could be done with more resources.

(So another comparison maybe, Twilight is a Freshman when Sunset is a Junior or Senior) Moondancer was only added because the other white unicorn with a red mane.. that was the OG Moondancer. So the animation had literally 2 Moondancers in it, the old and the new lol.
This was taking place during the first Equestria Girls movie. When Sunset returned and stole the crown, it brought Celestia down memory lane as she recalled her relationship with her former student. Notice that Luna walked up to Celestia near the beginning, but the next time she set the sun, Nightmare Moon's shadow was all over the moon. During those times, it was a flashback.
The animation style of this reminds me a lot of the My Little Pony movie. It has that floaty animation style. This also matches "Road to Rainbows" movie because it was done by the same crew as the MLP movie.

Note: Luna was talking about the "Moon Cycles" of the "other world" (since that is what Twilight would had to observe IF she fails to return to Equestria in time).
. Sunset Shimmer must have "skipped" at least ONE oportunity to return to Equestria (since Celestia said to kept the mirror in her throne room, waiting for her to come back). . There is circumstantial evidence that 8 "Mirror Cycles" passed since Sunset Shimmer went into the Human World ("Pedestria") & her return in the first Equestria Girls Movie ("Through The Mirror").
. She was registered as a "new person" [since she aparently lacks a counterpart] not long after crossing the mirror. She was not a baby, but rather looking exactly like she does in all the movies: a teenager (the transformation made by the mirror "locks" the shapeshifted pony preventing all aging, this also seems to have happened to the Dazzlings). -> This is also why Sunset Shimmer is only now taking classes in a highschool [since the "papers" say that she is within the "right" age to do it]; unlike Princess Twilight who just "usurped" the identity of Sci!Twi without realizing it [Canterlot Highschool & Crystal Prep Academy do not share their private databases]; so Principal Celestia only had the basic "National Identity" information from the last Census to check out (that simply says that a "Twilight Sparkle" of the apropiate age lives not so far away)].
The reason Sunset Shimmer is so skilled on EVERYTHING (including fine hand coordination for things like drawing, painting or playing guittar) is because she has being practicing for almost 2 decades in a body that never changes.
While a lot could be explained as being flashbacks mixed with the time around the first EqG, the presence of Moondancer and other current day ponies with Sunset definitely makes this a weird one, possibly suggesting that Celestia was tutoring both Sunset and Twilight at the same time, but neither being aware of the other
