It sounds old, has all the old sounds, hammond organ and background vocals, for example. But that's okay. A rather soft but heavy psych kind of music, there are always some hard undertones. Melodic and full of bass, and avoiding distractions from pop and jam. In my opinion, it is not very prog, but I will put it under the label "blue prog" based on feeling, it is warm, dark and has coherent but interesting structures. Having recently been upgraded to an original copy of this very rare album, I decided to listen to it again, as long as I had it outside, to see if my opinion had changed either. I left my original review from 2010 to 2014. Here are my current thoughts:
My initial opinion on this in the opening cuts is that it's obviously not a great album, and arguably not even a particularly good one. Their style is quite ungrateful with fairly simple songwriting. And few would consider their musical prowess virtuosic on any of the chosen instruments. Fortunately, once you stick to it, it is revealed that (as is sometimes the case) the band is front-loading the playlist with an unbalanced amount of inferior material. I found that by the end of the first page I was obviously pulling for them to overcome my initial disappointments. And they overcame them. One of the album's main claims to fame is the guitarist's virtual continuous use of fuzz. As I recall, there may have been only one cut where he turned off his fuzz box, begging comparisons to their Canadian contemporaries, Plastic Cloud. It should also be noted a rather extremely shabby organ that all but permeates this LP, and which also has a very strong resemblance to another group, the Formation of sunlight. All in all, it may not impress those looking for genre masterpieces. On the contrary, it should hold a significant amount of its appeal to garage fanatics, not so much for the type of music, which is only basic underground rock typical of its harvest, but for the comparative lack of varnish for the finished product. Like the rest of the time, there's a lot that's much worse. Approach this with a certain reservation in your expectations and you could be pleasantly surprised.......LADISLAV&Z... ..........
