People keep talking about the season 7 finale. I believe it’s NOT that shadow pony. I think it’s a different one; tirek. Let me explain:
— Tirek was from Season 4 so it was more relevant and in the beginning, when he was weak, he made a similar appearance
— The shadow pony from season 7 was in ‚limbo‘ so he couldn’t have been there since the other legends were also still in ‚limbo‘ WITH him
— Tirek was able to escape all the way back in season... I think one or two (I can’t remember lol) so he needed a place to stay. The castle of the two sisters was perfect because up to season 4 no one ever went there and he was safe. My theory is, he thought everyone forgot about the castle of the two sisters and thought he was safe, but when the main six went to the castle, he realised it wasn’t the perfect place. Unable to think of any other hiding spot he decided to start planning on ways to get magic (I mean it’s been a couple of seasons so he’s hidden for quite a while). Think about it; after the season 4 finale we didn’t get anymore hints to a shadow pony until the season 7 finale (unless I’m forgetting something idk) and tirek was back with serv... serva..... cough the cute three headed dog. But then again that’s just what I think and no one really cares so whatever.

Looks like we might find out in the Season 7 finale.

S7 Finale: I'm about to end this whole man's career

Honestly I believe it was tirek. Just a personal theory, since he had to have left tartarus in the second season. Since we have seen he "feed" on magic, he was most likely put in a rare area where there was little to none of that. He was left very weak and practically none existent after all that time.

Once back in equestria, he headed straight for Canterlot. Hoping to cause trouble for the princesses and possibly get wanting to get their magics to get regain his strength. This would also explain that even through he wasn't able to absorb the alicorns' magic, did set off the alarm. That caused Shining Armors' shield and caused Chrysalis to rethink how to get in, not to mention how he knew that Cadence was an alicorn. Even though she probably wasn't even born when he was terrorizing the ponies before.

So he since he wasn't able to do what he wanted there. he found other things that were full of magic or had some sort of magic that made them different. (Mirror pool, jackolope, Parasprites, breezies, poor magical creatures that accidently get hit with twilights or other unicorns' magic while trying to practice; orange frog and orange bird). Which was why he was near ponyville and the everfree forest. Which is brimming with magical creatures. Of course he didn't find it right away, only after traveling all across equestria. Finding the forest probably not long before castle mane-ia, while the ponies were there. He simply followed them and found their terror funny.

Now why he didn't realize why one of them was an alicorn was is beyond me. But again this is just what I think about the shadow pony. As well as why it took Tirek so long to become the villain, when if you think about it the actual set up was in season too. (sorry that I got off topic and talked more about Tirek and not directly the Shadow pony. If I didn't make any since, let me know and I will try to make it more clear.)

Ik it's really late but... the shadow-like creature can only be a remnant of Grogar's rogue power... its possible that it would have been existing as a phantom even before celestia and luna got the castle up and just because grogar was defeated doesn't mean that all his magic would remain with him or his bewitching bell... just like Storm King and some of his stormy magic terrorising in the human parallel world after he got busted

Well, the pony of shadows was a pony that was taken over by the shadow forces and banished Star Swirl but keeping him alive. I have watched the last episode where it reveals your theory, but it was a really good geuss Brony! By the way I love your videos!!

It's kind of fun watching your old theory videos that have been utterly debunked. That's mostly because I'm mean, but I see how you came to this conclusion! Maybe it was an old plan that never came to fruition.

Actually now that I think about, it makes sense that the banished timeline and return timeline is opisite. Why? Well Luna is the weakest, and she had the least time being banished Discord is stronger than Luna for being banished longer. But Sombra was banished the longest and is the strongest. I guess depending on how long the villain is banished the more powerful they are when they return

Maybe the Pony of Shadows that we hear about in many occurances is Grogar's magic still continuing to create evil creatures. Cuz think about it, whenever theres a villain that was obviously corrupted (ie Sombra, Luna, and Stygian) shadows had something to do with it. Sombra became shadow when he was defeated, the shadows that had assisted in Nightmare moons creation still reside in the old castle, and Stygian became shadow. They all became new beings from the shadow and what Grogar did was pretty much create monstrousities. Now i could be wrong cuz where i am its almost 12:30 meaning im tired af but maybe im on to something and not just talking nonsense. You being a theororist would most likely be able to tell me one way or the other. Most likely im talking nonsese but this thought goes through my mind

The pony of shadows is stigeon when he was over taken by darkness. Or when sombra was banished his horn could have been used to make a shadow pony because when his horn was cut he could control it from outside the crystal empire

I believe the “shadow pony” is a shadow reflecting off the moon. Think of it like the tantabus. The more guilt she has, the stronger it gets. So when she was banished to the moon, she had guilt. Luna was back to normal at one point, but felt guilty for trying to takeover Equestria. The shadow got so strong, it came ALIVE, resembling a pony.

The S7 finale doesn’t solve this mystery though. The shadow pony from the finale was banished to Limbo during this episode, that thing at the end of Castle Mania can’t have been Stigeon.
I’m sticking to my theory that it was Tirek in his weakened form for now- I know people say it can’t have been because then he would have seen Alicorn Twi, but remember, he only saw AJ and Dash. He heard the rest of them through the wall.

I think Star Swirl was run by some evil magic like Luna's jealousy, or King Sombra's reign of shadow upon the Crystal Empire. So he did as so Luna had, he turned to Discord. At the end of that episode he came back as Star Swirl, but was still able to control the form of Discord.

We all know the ‘Shadow Pony’ is collected dark magic that takes over individuals. The only pony it has taken over so far is Stigian. Star Swirl bannished the ‘Shadow’, and it feels like, to me, that Sombra was working with the ‘Shadow’.

well its kind of confusing and maybe this time your right (maybe) but i also think sombra is the shadow pony and star swirl is the shadow pony its pretty confusing than ive ever expected

My theory is that sombra was trying to create the pony of light, but his spell got wrong and instead he created the pony of shadows. That infected him and he became evil, but when he was defeated, he lost the pony of shadows and thus it infected Luna,Snitchet and he himself again as he had reappear being evil and not kind.

We now have a canon answer, but I still love this theory (:

The theory about Starswirl being the shadow pony may not have held up to the test of time, but the theory at 1:14 did. Tirek was sent to Tartarus before Sombra was turned to shadow, because Starswirl knew his brother Scorpan, and the royal sisters were also shorter at the time of the pillars' disappearance. The flashback of Sombra being banished shows Celestia and Luna at the heights they are in the show.

Interesting thoughts as always! I'll just share my own views on the analysis.

Okay, as far as banishing Sombra goes, nothing says that it occurred before Discord just because the Princesses weren't using the Elements against him. Why would they rescue the Crystal Empire from Sombra first and leave it be, then rescue Equestria from Discord and settle there to rule? And they probably just didn't need to use the Elements against Sombra because he wasn't especially powerful. He must have been a mere unicorn king who used some dark magic. But anyway, this is most likely a little detail that not even the show writers have decided on.

Second, the whole of your theory is based upon the assumption that the Shadow Pony is a villain who was banished by the Royal Sisters. I don't see why you should necessarily assume that, just because there is a pattern with banished villains reemerging every season. Even if the Shadow Pony turns out to be a villain, my bet is that it won't be anyone significant that the Royal Sisters had banished before. Just a leftover from Nightmare Moon as Granny Smith's tale suggests. As far as a potential main villain in the season is concerned, I think we can expect him/her to come from elsewhere. It's possible.

Third, I find it hard to believe that the Shadow Pony is Starswirl. I don't want to think that a great unicorn genius of magic suddenly appeared thousands of years after he supposedly passed away, just haunting an old Royal castle as a "Shadow Pony" or whatnot. Not to mention that the idea of Star Swirl getting banished by Celestia & Luna is... well... weird. Plus, that picture of Star Swirl where he is gray mage is a fan interpretation, so the yellow eyes don't really apply as a possible connection between him and the Shadow Pony. On his poster in "Three's A Crowd" his eyes are closed, so we don't know what colour his eyes really were.

My theory is that the so called "Shadow Pony" we saw at the end is indeed Zecora (Granny Smith's tale is only a myth and the shadow "hat" is just a hood), who was spying on the Mane Six & Spike for reasons to be revealed. I believe her intentions are, as always, benevolent. She cunningly helped with her white magic potion before, so she's keeping an eye on them now for further support. Oh, she also lives inside the Everfree Forest, so she could easily have access to the old castle.

maybe during Starswirl's transformation into Discord a bit of his consciousness had to be given up in order for his magic to be more powerful but that consciousness couldn't just go ''poof!'' and it's gone. But I think that it was now independent of Discord/Starswirl and that's why it didn't reform with him.

Here is my theory and I'm pretty sure it's right becuz I am enormously late. The pony of shadows we saw in the castle was definitely tirek but just becuz he was there doesn't mean that he saw twilight. That castle is huge he could have been in a small place to get some energy and I'm pretty sure he didn't go around exploring. And twilight was in the secret library so it's not like she was too exposed and she wasn't making to much noise when she came either tirek would have been in a place quite hard to find and he wouldn't have known that there were people in the castle I mean it's not like the castle has sensors and security cameras he would only have known people were there when everyone were going crazy and by the time he reached the place everyone was in the secret library after that he probably didn't want to just take a rest but steal magic.
I think it's safe to make quesses now that mlp is over and its still a mystery undiscovered it could also be zecora but I think if it was her she would've showed her self or put things right this is my theory

Honastly i still think it could be trixie only because in one of the episodes where we first see trixie is that she was jealous of twilights magical capabilities so she got a hold of a neclace that amplifies her magic and we see while she is using it her eye color changes to red and it couldnt have been the old pony yes they look similar but the beard it would of been shown in the shadow when the shadow pony was first introduced and with that being said my hypothesis is that trixie is still mad at twilight or someone else.

Who is the shadow pony in Castle Mane-ia? Well, after watching WatchPony's Top 10 Darkest MLP Moments, I think I've figured it out.

In entry number 10 on the list (This cliffhanger), when they said that some of Nightmare Moon's magic could've went on to corrupt Stygian, I immediately screamed *SORE WA CHIGAU YO!*, and I began thinking into the matter. After a couple minutes of racking my brain trying to figure it out, I narrowed my focus into season 4, and the pieces of the puzzle began to come together. I realized that it wasn't related to the Pony of Shadows at all, but was a villain much closer to home, one whose first appearance was in the same cloak Pinkie (who was believed to be the Pony of Shadows for most of the episode, making the connection) was wearing, one whose eyes were the exact same shape, and one introduced to the show just 23 episodes later.

In Season 1, Nightmare Moon returned. In Season 2, Discord returned. In Season 3, King Sombra returned. What villain returned in Season 4?

Yeah I know I'm commenting late and this video is dated to season 4 but.. You know how you mentioned the timelines well do you think that still applies and what if the shadow pony is/was a villain planed for seasons 5 6 and/or 7. I'm saying maybe MAYBE the pony was going to be a Vivian in 5 but they decided against it then they were gonna do it in 6 but forgot or something so what about the soon to be (hopefully not cancelled) season 7. MAYBE THEY WERE PLANING THIS WHOLE THING FROM THE BEGINNING AND THE SHADOW IS ONE OF THE 6. I mean the 6 thing can be possible because every pony in the series has shown a dark side at least once and apparently it is ok to banish all evil in the past and everything else in the future gets either destroyed. ( Sombra) befriended (Discord) restored(Luna) sent back to where they were before ( crisa ...I can't spell her name) or put back into prison(teric the satanic monster that I can't spell his name either) so really everything is possible.

According to this villain concept ya i guess Tirek would make sense but wasn't he in prisoned in tartarous yet it was stated that he escaped during its about time when surburus left the gates of tartarous so yes this theory still makes sense because he is also banished in the earlier days of equestria according to celestia and Luna because Luna is still present and they did not use the elements of harmony to get rid of him but if even celestia's knowledge is limited about the crystal empire but yet twilight somehow knows that the have been gone a 1000 years and this episode clearly comes after Lunas return which was only 1000 years this time would mean that Sombra was banished after nightmare moon but as you can see in celestia's explanation of the crystal empires fall Luna was clearly with her and they did not use the elements this must be bad writing on the writers part because none of this lines up correctly so sorry but this smashes all previuos theory's including my previous one. The pony of shadows is one of the nightmare forces that escaped before night moon was first banished , perhaps we will see more in future seasons?

Shadow pony is star swirl the bearded, he is immortal, he was the adviser to the princess's and no doubt lived in the castle of the two sisters he has now just returned to find the castle in ruins after being gone so long

With the season 7 finale, this and discord being Star Swirl the bearded is debunked, but still there is a small chance that the shadow Pony was a pony, but when Nightmare Moon's magic faded over time, he became weaker and now is just a shadow seeking for a new body?? I dunno. Or it might be the shadow pony from the season 7 finale Shadow Play! idk for real tho.

May I add that Luna said she created it and it gains power from the blame Luna put on herself, the more she thought it was herself, the it grew

Does anyone notice that in the episode where they tell about Hearts warming that Clover the clever's outfit looks kind of like the outline of the Shadow Pony and we don't know what color eyes he had because we've never seen him before so as not to say or she's the shadow Pony.

It IS a nice theory but , how many villains have we seen in season 3,4 I can only think of 2 . Lord Tirek and Sunset Shimmer . For Tirek it is a possibility because maybe that is when He was going to straight ahead steal the magic of friendship but when he tried and it didn't work He decided to take the magic of ponies, unicorns and pegasis first . Now for Sunset Shimmer it is very unlikely BUT maybe she went back to Equestria not to do harm but to opologize to Princess Twilight about .. ( you know what happened in the first Equestria Girls ) she wore the cloak so that nopony would recconize her . SHE tried to for a while but then gave up and went back to Canterlot high and when Twi would come back she would apologize .

In Castle Mane-ia as Applejack said the Pony of Shadows is leftover magic of Nightmare Moon Stygian who became The Pony of Shadows because of his jealousy like Nightmare Moon/Luna, that magic must have remained to have affected Luna because The Pillars use their sacred items to banish The Pony of Shadows also taking them too, what if The Pony of Shadow is an entiy that affects creatures based on their extreme Jealousy, and The Pony Of Shadow could just be the race of Umbrums, because they are just shadows and they affected Luna and Stygian, Stygian's jealousy must have been so strong it attracted many Umbrums that became one, cause shadow can combine, and this came before Nightmare Moon, so maybe The Pony Of Shadows is an Umbrum that affected both Stygian and Luna.And maybe King Sombra used to be a normal Pony but was consumed by an Umbrum, or he was an Umbrum also,King Sombra, and The Shadow Pony are just a Shadows so they may be related but not them same thing that affected Luna and Stygian

If Star Swirl was really the shadow pony and the pattern of villains continues wouldn't that make the assumption that Star Swirl was evil witch we know is not true because in the episode Three is a Crowd there is an entire exhibit dedicated to celebrating this powerful unicorn while yes there are other holidays commemorating villains such as nightmare night but according to Zecora this is a time to place offerings so nightmare moon would leave the ponies of Equestria alone another year.But this still leaves the question wide open who is the shadow pony? well the answer could be obvious or i am just making unauthorized assumptions but couldn't Aj have spun the story on rainbow dash and the castle was what truly frightened Aj in this episode but who knows maybe granny just made it up to tell around the campfire. let me know what you think

Nope. Here's why.
The leftover magic from nightmare moon would look like the creatures that made her nightmare moon. That thing certainly looks like the nightmare forces (the things that took over and controlled Luna.) So I think that Granny Smith was right. This might come into play in later seasons. Soo... We know now that the real Shadow pony was Stigeon, the pony who turned into the pony of Shadows, (we know that from Shadow play part 1 and 2 the last episodes of season 7) Star Swirl and the other pilars banished him to limbo (with themselves) before the elements of the harmony were even created, we know that because the pilars used their magic to create the elements of harmony, and the tree of harmony so equestria would still be safe with their absence. So technically Twilight wouldn't have even become and alicorn if it worn't for the pilars, because there would be no elements of harmony for her and the mane six to save equestria with, or maybe she would be an alicorn, just not the princess of friendship, because there would be no tree of harmony, therefore no castle, therefore no cutie map, therefore she still wouldn't know what she is the princess of, also because if there were no elements of harmony, there would be no honesty lesson for Apple Jack to learn in season 4 or no loyalty lesson for Rainbow Dash, or no Generosity lesson for Rarity, or no Laughter lesson for Pinkie Pie so on... So nobody would have gotten gifts that turned into keys that unlocked the chest, that made the castle, that made the map, and there would be no solving friendship problems for them. So basically, without the pilars, discord would still be reining over equestria.

there are other things that have come together and made sense with new episodes, and I personally just love when that happens! <3

Long ago in Equestria there was a king named Cosmos and a Queen named Galaxia. They had three fillies. Yes three! The youngest one was Luna before her it was Celestia. Then the oldest. Her name was Astelle. Astelle was full of hatred to Tia. So one day the King and Queen died from a war to protect Equestria. Because they died Astelle let go all the the anger and turned evil and fought Tia for the throne. Astelle was about to finish off Tia until Luna came in and helped Tia, but Astelle was too powerful so Luna was knocked away. Tia on the other hand got up and band Astelle out of Equestria.

honestly I think the shadow pony is just a spirit who takes over an actual pony like how Luna turned into nightmare moon and king sombra somehow turned evil. "darkness" took over them

S4 e1 twilight uses a king sombra spell to turn the potion white then sees luna's transformation that looks the same as the pony of shadows' transformation and then after that this episode appears the think it's part of nightmare moon and the pony of shadows but it's not it's eyes are yellow neither nightmare moon, king sombra nor the pony of shadows has yellow eyes but the all have some sort of connection

Anyone remember the tantapus? Relation to Luna, check. Shadow like creature, check. Maybe the tantapus existed long before Luna turned it into what is now. It all lines up.

I have a theory that still fits into the theory that discord is starswirl and the starswirl is the shadow pony, here it is, maybe the shadow pony is leftover magic from starswirl when he became discord, like Granny Smith's story but she forgot who the leftover magic was from, it makes sense sorry for the long comment

Another thing (yeah I use those 2 words a lot) they defeated sombra with a rainbow beam to banish him that really sounds like the elements

Well didn’t the two alicorn sisters come to stop discord, so that means that if the shadow pony did come first that Luna and Celestia didn’t banish him and in the episode it clearly states that Starswirl and his friends not only made the elements but banished him as well

Maybe this darkness is it’s own thing because the pillars faced a similar threat who was also taken by jealousy

I think that the shadow pony is Luna's and Sombra's evil spirit, and when Stygian got angry that spirit got inside of him and turned him into the shadow pony. So actually anypony can be the shadow pony if they got nagativ emotions inside of them.

When star swirl got rid or the sirens, I bet he used he magic and his body was eliminated, and maybe, his magic got turned into a shadow, and he went to the castle of the sisters to find a spell that can get him back to his own original form.........

The shadow pony isn't just wearing a cloak " he or she " is also wearing a hat! The shadow pony is Tixie or Starswirl!

Maybe Nightmare Moon created the shadow pony, but it isn't physically a pony. It was just a dark shadow that came to life. As Granny Smith said, not all of NMM's dark magic went with her. AND it was at the old castle they lived in. Maybe the dark magic of NMM created the shadow pony. shrugs

if star swirl is the shadow pony how did he live that long or do pony's ever die

the pony of shadow is really a old friend of star swirl and the others. and i think the the dark magic that transform luna into nigntmare moon is the same.some part of that dark magic did not get trapped in the limbo.

What is it with everyone and equating the Shadow Pony with Stygian? I get that he's referred to as 'the Shadow Pony', but he cannot be the pony of shadows which appears in Castle Mane-ia - he was in Limbo at that time with no way to escape!


The writers have caused unnecessary confusion by calling Stygian 'the Shadow Pony', but that does not mean he's the same character as the Shadow Pony from Castle Mane-ia.

3 years later: Start Swirl and his 5 friends (The legendary ponies of S7, also the 1st generation of Elements of Harmony - Healing, Strength, Hope, Bravery, Beauty, and Solstice?- the 6 ponies that planted the crystal seeds which become the Tree of Harmony) banished themselves to Limbo with shadow pony to save the Equestria.

I have some pretty good theories of how Nightmare Moon became Nightmare Moon and how the shadow Pony is apart of nightmare Moon's powers but my parents won't let me have a YouTube channel so I can't explain it in one comment.

Guess what, that mysterious shadow was of Pinkie Pie goofing around and then she found the organ and played it. The organ was connected to all the secret passes of the “Castle of the two Sisters”. That’s why the scary things happened. That’s what I think.

This is silly, but what if Discord and the shadow pony are both Starswirl the bearded? There is little to no evidence for this. The thought of the shadow pony being some split off part of Starswirl's identity is interesting though.

Yes yet another thing it couldn't be the pony of shadows, sombra or magic from night mare moon because it had yellow eyes and tirek's eyes were smaller than the shadow and why in hell would zecora be creeping around in the castle, and one laas VERY IMPORTANT detail... it's a shadow on a wall you can still see the wall and normal shadows don't have eyes (don't believe me go look at your shadow and try blinking your eyes tell me if you see your eyes on the wall)

If the Shadow Pony IS leftover Nightmare Moon magic, then that doesn't mean it has to LOOK like Nightmare Moon. A nondescript blob of shadow would fit a force of pure hatred and jealousy.
