When playing Shadows tunes he got the Hank Marvin vibrato effect by bending the neck of his guitar to adjust the string tension because it didn’t have a whammy bar. He could easily mimic a Watkins Tape Echo by playing a lead guitar line a fraction after the beat with his pick technique. Aussie band The Big Three playing at an outdoor concert in Nelson Park in Hastings, 1963. During applause for a spirited set their lead guitarist turned to the backstage area where Dinah Lee’s backing band were having a break. ‘Hey Doug, how about joining us for a jam?’ Two 12-year-old boys in the audience turn to each other: “did you hear that?” as a waterfall of cascading notes swirl from every direction through the warm summer air.
