About five years after appearing briefly as part of Andrew Loog Oldham's stable, Vashti -- now billed by her full name, Vashti Bunyan -- recorded her only album. Folker and more serious effort than her initial mid-60s recordings, it's a pleasing but overly gentle piece of British rock-tinged folk, produced by Joe Boyd. A certain similarity to some of the other works under Boyd's supervision, such as The Incredible String Band and the Fairport Convention, was ensured by contributions from ISB's Robin Williamson and Fairport's Dave Swarbrick and Simon Nicola. For good measure, there were string and recording arrangements by Robert Kirby, who did some string arrangements for Nick Drake, another artist produced by Boyd. Consisting exclusively of source material, Just Another Diamond Day contained dignified but somewhat sad ruminations with pastoral, truly rural feel, imbued with images of lonely meditations after rain, wind, sunsets and open fields. Acoustic arrangements without drums brought an intimate ambience suitable for Vashti's fragile, measured, almost despondently wispy vocals. This was quite in the manner of Marianne Faithfull's highest and most scathing early efforts, albeit with a far more folky setting and livelier lyrics. The CD reissue of this rarity (on Spinney) is amplified by four bonus songs that, with oh-so-mild poppier bent, are actually rated as the best material on the disc: the B-side of 1966's "Love Song," a pair of unreleased acetates from 1966-1967 and a 1969 version of "Iris's Song" (which will be remodeled as "Iris's Song for Us" on the LP). It is a pity, however, that the other three songs from her official 1965-1966 singles were also not added, to make this a more complete retrospective.LADISLAV&ZIVANOVIC..........
