Producer, Written-By - Nektar///+Recorded Oct. 1972 at Dierks Studios./+Nektar's second album, issued in 1972, is a big step into the progressive rock of arena and away from the largely psychedelic, near-Krautrock, sprawling style of Journey to the Centre of the Eye. It also owes a huge debt to Pink Floyd, whose Meddle album was obviously a huge influence on the group. While this would most certainly be the kiss of death for most bands who started out as hard and heavy as Nektar, A Tab in the Ocean is quite a remarkable outing. While Taff Freeman's keyboards took on a more prominent role, and the band's collective writing became more sequential and more tightly organized, it was still Roye Albrighton's guitar sonics, whose textures go could from lilting and warm to cacophonous and steely, that identified the band's sound. The title track, which clocks in at 16-minutes-and-43-seconds (that made up all of side one the original LP) is full of keyboard pomp and circumstance, but it also offers plenty of heavy rock & roll insanity in the interplay between the guitars and driven basslines of Derek Moore and the busy, power rock drumming of Ron Howden. Being a suite, it is a largely composed piece that winds and turns back on itself more than once before coming to a burning climax. Albrighton's vocals on "Desolation Valley/Waves" temper everything with their Roger Waters-ish gentleness (à la "Grantchester Meadows"), and play foil to his tripped-out, watery guitar playing. Ultimately, it's a worthy successor to Journey. The 2004 remaster features the original 1972 German mix of the album as well as its 1976 U.S. mix (one that was created as a way of capitalizing on the American success of Remember the Future, where the album had never been available). The remasters sound wonderful and the American mix, while punchier, lacks a little of the headphone space of the original. It's awesome that they provided both on one disc for fans.
