The French band Alpha Ralpha is very obscure, I don't even bother to mention it because no one has heard of it, and yet they recorded for Warner Bros. The original LPs are not too terribly expensive, but they may be a little difficult to find outside of France and Canada (it was also released in Canada). I remembered some websites that believed this group was Canadian, from Quebec, but they weren't, just because the person running that website owned a Canadian press. They are indeed French, unfortunately they have never been reissued in any format. Although it was recorded from May to September 1976, it did not appear until 1977 (this album could easily have appeared in November 1976, but it did not, probably record the label's politics). This is pretty original, but perhaps not the most amazing prog you'll hear all year round. The band consisted of bassist Charlie Charriras, guitarist Claude Alvarez-Pereyre, guitarist Michel Mareska, keyboardist Jean Alain Gardet and drummer Emmanuel Lacordaire. I have a feeling that this group was discovered by Tai Phong, not only was it on the same label, but also the fact that Jean-Jacques Goldman and two Vietnamese brothers Tai and Kahn are on this album providing some wordless voices. Also some member of malicorne guests, as well as François Bréant, from the obscure and wonderful band Cruciferius, who later recorded two albums in 1978 and 1979 on EGG that are not impossible to get their hands on. I can't compare this to any group. "Synergy" features some beautiful split string synthesizers and nice guitar work. "Nova" contains more beautiful guitar and Mini Moog works, although there is a short passage with the influence of the country (along with a steel guitar) I think it was a small mistake. It seems that "Syris Major" is just a short spicy part that leads to a beautiful "Genese". I especially like the use of marimba on it. "Magellan" bears more than a fleeting resemblance to something I've heard from François Bréant's Sons Optique, which I guess is not surprising given that he appears on that song providing his keyboard work, and I can easily say it's him because he has a style completely different from Jean Alain Gardet.Ne let the Tai Phong connection scare you, if Tai Phong is not to your liking, because this is mostly instrumental progressive rock, only with occasional voices without words (from the guys from Tai Phong). While you can only get it as a used LP (and one that won't break your bank account, thankfully), it's a nice album to have in your collection. Ladislav&Zivamovic.............
