Earth Mother is darker, more filled with pain than an earlier album. The first song, "Times," has painfully honest lines of "I worry if you get too close to me, and I miss you so much when you leave ..." There is a peaceful acceptance of the end of a perfect relationship in "Your King's Queen," wishing his former lover all the best: "But you will love yourself." In "Old Friends", he sings "But where did all this magic that kept us in our place go / Now I couldn't help but show sadness on my face / And I cried / Something died." And then there's the almost bitter resignation of "Sorry Living": "And what's another sad moment when you get a taste for sorry livin'." In a rare departure, he sings someone else's song, Andy Bown's hauntingly sad "If It's All The Same To You" by Herd and Status Quo, who plays bass on this album. He's in the perfect mood for the other songs.
