CD Set-top box - 38701 (1990, Switzerland) Remastered by Pädi Schwitter.............L&Z...Circus has a reputation for having one of the genre's more unorthodox lineups - no KB and no electric guitars. It's not like that for the guitar because there are parts of it, although they remain discreet, some sounds that I don't see making guitars through effects. This absolute masterpiece (I strongly insist on it) gradually builds on the superb climax advancing from one track to the next. Hauser is a true top percussionist and puts on an impressive performance using all sorts of instruments and makes some of the most beautiful vibraphone lines since Greenslade at the Coliseum. Bassist Cerletti is the only Swiss who is not Alemanić, but he is certainly an impressive bassist and a complicit guitarist. Grieder and Frei are simply an amazing duo on wind instruments and together with Cerletti make up the ultimate vocal stretch. The music is quite unique in some points that makes you think about VDGG (mostly saxophones, but also in one top part of singing much better than Hammill himself because it is more melodic) , but also Maneige during classical influenced moments , Crimson but IMO is not exactly like Tulla although this album is full of orgasmic flutes. Bendsmen is a nice poppy tune, but deliberately simple - just an unusual setup that intrigues us enough to move on. Laughter Lane is quite a gem and a solid progression from the opening track, but it stays in the format of the song and it is known that it is much better to come, but this would be a real gem for any other band. With their third song Loveless Time still in the format of the song , we are now going into serious business and are aware that this will be a real interesting opus to come. Movin' On (get the album title?) with Dawn is completely instrumental (8 min long) and is one of the better examples ever of being descriptive music , and it ranks as some of the masterpieces of impressionist classical composers from the early 20th century. Between some really gloomy athmospheres at the end of the night to soothing bird calls and the breeze of the wind to the first rays of the sun, it's simply stunning. And now comes the piece de resistance. They could easily make a package out of this number of 22 min+, but they decided to let it express itself as their own whole. This composition begins with the most ingenious rythms strewn with lines of saxophones and flutes, and 6 minutes into the number comes in some squeak (without jazz feeling) with a sudden one of the three vocalists making their way into another scheme making this grandiose. Bass and flutes take over only for Roland Frei to break into this Hamillian singing worthy of Pawn Heart. Now we are barely halfway there and now we are lying on the floor ready for the final blow , the ultimate nail in our coffin. The music flutters, it spins , it revolves around you and circles , it swirls without giving you a moment to recover and now comes the blow. The lyrics of the finale are shared in the most beautiful way of the call and response so well performed that if you have not recorded your intellectual wad so far, you must be frigid or impotent. The number closes with incredible music unfortunately (the only small mistake) that sticks close to my fave number from the Crimson, Starless.Opa! Repeated listening in the last four years still hasn't calmed me down because I recorded my intellectual wad just writing this review without listening to it. I don't know how this album is almost never listed on the list of desert islands, because this one bets on everyone's . Hurry up with Greg Walker , he still has a few copies of this and their debut paid off as well. SIMPLY STUNNING..........LADISLAV&Z...
