Weidorje (pronounced VAY-dorj) were a French band that was a short-lived outgrowth of Magma. Their only self-titled album was released in 1978. Their name is Kobaïan for "Celestial Wheel" (what could explain the UFO on the cover?) and is taken from a song from Magma's album Üdü Wüdü (which is the most similar album to Weidor's only release).
It could almost be described as a superb bass guitar album, although it owes Magma a strong debt for operatic vocals and also seems to rely on Magma's subtle influences of John Coltrane. The band was formed by bassist Bernard Paganotti and Patrick Gauthier, who also played synths and keyboards with the band Heldon. Around this time, some magma members also appeared on Heldon's standby album. Paganotti also played on numerous Magma live CDs in the 1970s, especially Live/Hhaï, considered by many to be one of Magma's masterpieces, and this clearly influenced weidor's sound.
One of the most prominent features of Magma's music for most of the 1970s was the prominent distorted bass sound.
The guitar is especially absent in Weidorje and much of Magma's music, with the distorted bass taking on much of the role of the main instrument in its place while driving the rhythm section.
Weidorje flickers, moans and squonks a little, but is powered by manic lead bass unlike any other bass you've heard before except in Magma.
Among those influenced by this was young bassist Bill Laswell, who would riff it a little in the live sets of his band Material before recording any album.
Weidorje also performed at least one concert, and some live material was included on the CD reissue of the original LP. They also have an unreleased second album that is available through online blogs...ladislav&zivanovic..........
