For a sense of nostalgia for psychedelia in the late '60s, it seems that not enough time has passed. And in fashion, there was completely different music.
Although, in principle, Garrett Lund's album turned out to be quite good. yes, that's not bad, very good. It just came out at the wrong time, five years late. The composition of musicians participating in the recording of the song "Almost Grown" is not particularly attractive. For most musicians and backing vocalists, this was the first and only recording. Except that drummer David Lauser will "shine" on Sammy Hagar's albums since the early 1980s, and guitarist Glenn Ross Camppell was among the founders of Juicy Lucy, a group not so unknown, but apparently the second, and even the third, echelon. And Garrett Lund himself (aka Bruce Robertson) is a character in the world of rock music, in general, inconspicuous. He played in the bands Trane and The Caretakers, which released several singles. That's it. Thus, it turned out that "Almost Grown", which had a circulation of only 2,000 copies, was his only big idea.
And now about the album itself. Almost all the material (except for one cover of Dylan's song) was written by Garrett himself, sometimes a co-author. The style of compositions mainly lies in the range from pure psychedelic rock to acid rock. Only the pop-rock "Country Livin'", which he co-wrote alongside Bob Adkins of the little-known band The Regents, and most of all, in my opinion, uninteresting on the album, and orchestrated by a song cover of Dylan's song "(It's All Over Now) Baby Blue" transcends that framework. I liked the latter a lot more than the original. The highlight of the album was Lund's vocals. Sometimes shiveringly-vibrating like Demis Roussos, sometimes bleating in the style of Marc Bolan, then almost androgynous, but I liked his singing. I want to mention guitarist Jimmy Jerviss' performance. Brass player involvement in "Another Reason" and "Think Of Children" was also successful. There are no songs to claim to be a hit on the album. Well, perhaps with some stretching to this category can be attributed to the composition "Serena", which is reminiscent of her first part of the song Demis Roussos.. The best on the album for me were "The Only Turnaround", "Serene", "Silver Sails", "Stop The World" and " (It's All Over Now) Baby Blue", which is most albums. One of the failures is Country Livin. However, it looks like a failure only in the background of the other songs of the album. And so - just the middle song.
The reissue of the 2001 film Almost Grown added five more bonuses. Only because of the presence of the orchestrated "Serena" this version of the album must be in the collection. The other four are rustic songs of acoustic gita. Kind of like Dylan. So at the time of my childhood, hippie youth sang in the evenings in gazebos. Very "raw" performance. However, one of them looks (albeit spoiled by the vocals) very beautiful - this is "Over And Under".
Double taste after listening to the album. He seems to be fine, but there's obviously something missing. And I'm troubled by contemplation - what?
Not a bad album.ladislav&zivanovic..........
