Povijest Zagreba datira još 1094. godine kada je mađarski kralj Ladislav, vraćajući se iz svog pohoda na Hrvatsku, osnovao biskupiju. Uz biskupsku stolicu, sjeverno od zagrebačke katedrale razvilo se i kanonsko naselje Kaptol, kao i utvrđeno naselje Gradec na susjednom brijegu; granica između njih je potok Medveščak.
