His musical career began with Dave Stewart and Peet Coombes in 1975 in the band The Catch, which became The Tourists in 1977. After three albums and the breakup of the band, Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox continued to collaborate and formed the duo Eurythmics, which gained worldwide notoriety in 1983 with the single Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). During the 1980s with eight studio albums and hit singles such as Here Comes the Rain Again, Sexcrime, The Miracle of Love and There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart), Eurythmics became one of the leading British pop groups of the decade. In 1990, at the Brit Awards ceremony, Annie Lennox officially announced the separation of the group and decided to retire temporarily to devote herself to her family.
Annie Lennox's solo career began in 1992 with the album Diva which received both critical recognition and public favor. In 1995, she released an album of Medusa covers. The title track No More I Love Yous won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. After a break of eight years, she returned in 2003 with the album Bare. In 2004, she won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the song Into the West, taken from the soundtrack of the film The Return of the King. The album Songs of Mass Destruction was released in 2007.
During her career, Annie Lennox won the Brit Award for Best British Female Vocalist six times. Known for her vocal abilities, she also signed with Dave Stewart all of Eurythmics' songs and they received in 1983 and 1986 the Ivor Novello Award for Author of the Year. During her solo career, Annie Lennox continued to write and compose her songs and in 1993 won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song for Why.
In 1992, during the tribute concert to Freddie Mercury who had died a few months earlier, The Freddie Mercury Tribute, for which a host of artists were invited to cover queen's hits, Annie Lennox and David Bowie, co-author of the song, delivered a masterful interpretation of Under Pressure.
Concerned about the Tibetan cause, she supported the monk Palden Gyatso and the musicologist Ngawang Choephel, two Tibetan prisoners of conscience for whose release Amnesty International campaigned.[2]
According to her record company RCA, Annie Lennox has sold more than 80 million records during her career, with Eurythmics and solo. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire on 31 December 2010 for services to Oxfam..........L&Z...
