Artwork: Wanda Monti with Cesare Monti (photo)It is not so easy to write and perform a prog masterpiece, but there were a bunch of them on the Italian scene in the 70s ... and Maxophone's only album of the same name is certainly one of them. I like to describe them as the missing link between Quelle Vecchio Locanda and Locanda delle Fate, as they combine the vivid excellence of the latter's second album, the former ellegal lyricist. The maxophone repertoire is based on a clever balance of different estuating sources: symphonic, Mediterranean folk, ragtime, baroque, romanticism, hard rock, a balance that is well reflected in the overwhelming beauty and bold complexity of the six compositions that fill the original album. The musical creation of individuals reaches extraordinary levels of impeccable skill, but it is evident that the ensemble most of the time likes to shine as a whole: nevertheless, there is always room for killer clarinet/saxophone/flute solos, beautiful piano chords that come to the fore, sensible guitar tracks, brass textures, and even some ethereal, almost dreamy vibraphone things. Do not get too used to the melodic line or rhythm pattern, because the change will not last long: it will not come abruptly after all, but with a gentle fluency - you will not feel that this is happening, you will only notice when it has already happened ... That's what I call absolute mastery of arranging. The opening track 'C'e un Paese al Mondo' serves as the perfect introduction to maxophone's incredible music world, continuing with the slightly harder 'Fase'. Both songs coincide in showing the band's multifaceted style, with the first leaning closer to the evocative side of things and the second following a more explicitly intense trend. None of them get boring or superior... ever! Songs 4 and 6 are the most prominent patterns of the aforementioned complexity, and the band works especially more enriched textures and more noticeable contrasts, and yet it directed the whole variety into an integral amalgam. The final choir for song 6 is both emotional and ethereal. Song 3 sets the blend of baroque and big band (the opening section is indelibly unforgettable), in the compact cohesion of successive beautiful motifs that will surely win over any listener; Meanwhile, Trail 5 explores areas of pure melancholy. Bonus songs come from both sides of the single: 'Il Fischio del Vapore' is the folk sound of a nice cheerful spirit, while 'Cono di Gelato' is a ballad with a soft bluesy twist - though not as impressive as the official songs, I find them appealing, too, to be coherent with the previous repertoire despite their less competent nature. From one of Italy's many one-way bands... here's one of those records you can't praise enough. LADISLAV&Z..........
