And no w10 and w7 dont use the exact same explorer.exe, nor they use the same internet explorer browser they are different versions and actually internet explorer is hidden in windows 10 it actually uses edge.

Before I even get into the swapping. I’m gonna say this. I can see how this can break windows because though they look the same. Different things that are in the 98 explorer run in the background but are not in 95. Windows 95 has no idea what those files are, but they are needed. Windows 95 does not use them and then... things break.

3.1 didn't have explorer, it had program manager. You can actually run it instead of explorer on 98 and make it work like 3.1. there's a system file and you change shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe and it works. It's one of the .sys files
I’ve always wondered if you switched explorers from different windows versions. Tried it once but didn’t to do it properly. Edit: when I was switching explorer on a real pc for fun when I turned it on it needed some other files to work. Luckily I was able to revert the explorer to the correct one.
98Lite allows you to do that but it replaces stuff from W98 but also it deletes some nice features from it. There must be a way to do it without 98Lite...

The reason they don't work is because of conpactibility. And they can't read they're own data unless a program is able to read the language it's in. A another thing why it's a failure is that of the name... You should try kernalEX or making sure the name is correct. Your welcome
Ratchanon Chamnankit When he made the command move it actually awready renamed the file. It moved from the .../desktop /win95explorer to c:/windows/explorer.exe.
When the names are different, windows takes the data from the old file (the bits and such) and move to a new location, but under a new name.
If it wasnt renamed to explorer.exe as you tought windows wouldnt say "explorer.exe performed an ilegal operation", but it would rather say "explorer.exe" not found, because it searches for the specific filename.

With the right tweaks (aka compatibility mode) the Win2K explorer works... otherwise you can try an NT 5.0 beta explorer and it will work fairly well.
