@@christopherrogers532The next issue is actually the year 2038 bug, when the Unix epoch (in 32-bit form) will roll over. However, most systems have already switched to 64-bit epochs, which will last beyond the heat death of the universe.
@@christopherrogers532Y2K happened because computers were expensive and so they had to write the year as 19XX with the XX being replaceable with the year number to save space. So if its 1998, it would appear as the number 98 in the memory and would replace the XX part with 98. But since the millennium was coming, it would have the number 100, causing computers to write 19100 instead of correctly writing 2000. That's a limitation.
Now rollbacks just happen because it is a fundamental flaw of counting in computers, simply they don't have enough hands to count upon.
Imagine adding 999 and 1, but you can only see 3 digits, from the hundreds, tens, and ones. If you did the operation, it would become 1000, but since you can only see the hundreds, tens, ones digit place, you would only see 000 which would evaluate as 0. This is why if you set computers at high clock numbers, it would roll back to the 1980s. They cannot see the digit that is 1, because they can only see specific digits, called bits in computers.
Software devs are practical and they just want their app running, or their new features working, so they won't fix a problem unless it actually undermines the software's usability. You know, current issues that need to be solved, not the bugs that will happen in the year 10000
Overall, it's fine. Let the new kids fix it when the time comes in the year 10000, since we'll be long dead then.

Looking into the SYSTEMTIME data structure set in the Windows API, you'll find that the value is a ULONG (unsigned long) which makes the value pretty big however if it passes a certain amount it will overflow, so yes, it is still possible on Windows 11.
The fact the current windows core is actualy Window XP is insane. Is like a car that have been totally modified to look like current car with bunch of modern assist device. But its still using the same old engine from 1980's.
Well, operating systems are complex pieces of software with thousands of lines of code. You just don't get rid of all the work you've already done, there is no need to reinvent the wheel every time.
The current win11 core isn't winxp just because it looks like xp when things go awry, or because it inherits bugs found in earlier versions of the OS. Pretty much all OS kernels are iterative and go years or even decades back. If you really want to go down this rabbit hole, it goes way further back than XP. XP (Or Windows NT 5.1) was built on Win2k (5.0) was built on NT4 was built on NT3. Unintuitively, there is no Windows NT before version 3. It started at 3 to get mind-share with the consumer version of Windows of the same time, which was Windows 3.x.
Mh, there is a difference - a small detail here. On a 64-bit WIndows, if the very core is Windows XP, it would be actually Windows Server 2003 64-bit. Due to being a server OS in disguise, Windows XP Professional 64-bit (AMD64) was super stable. It would only BSOD, if the hardware was some obscure low-quality stuff with quirky drivers or failing in general.

@@ArmaRGool Limiting the bytes for storing the year is a good design choice. What they did wrong is to not prevent this value being to high that it creates issues This is a typical example of how unreliable is this os
I’m going to take a guess there’s some type of fallback implementation that isolates the core functions... time/date is implemented in APIi calls and anything that is expecting a certain value returned in memory allocated as X bytes is causing a memory address to become invalid so the kernel kills the offending process (which is why explorer and its functions keep dying and restarting). So Microsoft probably learned a few lessons with the Y2K bug but a lot of Windows apps remain fundamentally unchanged from the olden days and Windows and it’s components are a huge amount of code to analyze and implement fixes into (without causing new ones during that process is actually really difficult to do, especially if it’s compiled using libraries whose code can be many many years out of date). I wouldn’t want to go searching through OS code looking out for one tiny error without creating new ones! Plus, who the hell will be using Windows in 9999? We’ll be lucky to even have a habitable planet at that point!
I am amazed the OS even boots. While driver signatures are valid by itself, the certificates would have expired by this point. I think Windows is trying to restore itself by trying to get a new valid root certificate and update for itself to ensure system health. And it can't, because SSL (used for the update) doesn't like being outside the valid ranges, as certs specify a valid "not before X" and "not after X". That's why you can't browse the web properly, if you set your system clock f.e 30 years ahead or after today.
@@katrinabryce Actually not. Certificates themselves are invalid as soon their expiration date is met in UTC+0. Validity ranges from 10 years to 30, internal windows ones even are valid 1000 years. Some are adjusted, means it can take some hours for them to get truely expired. When it comes to SSL, the webserver allows a small time overhead. If you push your clock too far in time (just 24 hours ahead is enough) some servers just outright reject you and throw an error. Wait a minute, what did I say about the 1000 year windows certificate. oh.

I find it weird that a single date can pretty mess up the whole operating system… I know this is a very rare case but you think windows would make this much more stable. Imagine what could happen if someone did this to a lot of computers using some program
In a programming context: Numbers (like the date year) take up space on the harddrive (bits & bytes). This is always a fixed size.(example: a number always takes 4 bytes of space, even if the value is "0" - so the maximum value is 2^32 (4 Bytes = 32 Bits)). If you programm a calculator and would just add numbers up you would eventually be over your 2^32 maximum size. In that case weird things happen like the number will reset to 0.
@@jeroen5736 yes, or it could be planned obsolescence. Maybe Windows planned that should someone decide to use it beyond some years, it should not work properly. Maybe each system app has a certain expiry date like 2052 or so.
This whole video is giving me such existential vibes. Like not even computer software can survive the eventual decay of time. (As if Y2K didn't already prove that...) With enough time, everything will eventually become nothing.
How does this not prove planned obsolescence? I’m confused how there can be any innocuous explanation for what we’re experiencing here. wouldnt this be sort of like y2k in a nutshell or smthing lol 😭 with the shell crashing bc of the year, wasnt that sorta what people feared for their devices when they hit the year 2000?
Windows cant handle 5 years. Because windows cant handle the 5th num. So it doesn't know what to do. Time.Sector was ment for 4 years or 4 numerical values. It also denys 9999 Time.Sector was made for 9998. The effect of 9999 makes windows freak out because the Time.Sector doesn't know how to respond to being past 9998.
Why is everyone so surprised?! He is an enderman He can teleport which means he can teleport through time! Because the home of endermen is the end and yknow MULTIVERSE! So don't be surprised ever .
Interesting experiment, but the year 10,000 is over 7900 years away. It isn't a bug, it's a lack of implementation of an extra year digit not needed for over 7000 years. Even Microsoft won't last that long!!
time is used to store alot of things edits on file EVen events that happen on windows errors are logged based on time, on event viewer , time is also used for security checks and certifieds. some banks security that allow u to login also use time checks as they give a very small time gap for u to be able to use, so if a attacker try the same info on another time it rejects etc, time is used on system for many many things specially security, however this is something they can easily fix or patch but theres no reason as we will not use this system till year 9999
I suspect there is a lot of stuff from Windows XP that sticks under the hood of Windows 11. God, can't even remove them, that's the result, and fallback will fail. How "ambitious" Windows is!
I don't exacly get why Windows does Time Management like that. It would be more easier to just let the OS accept the time, no matter when it is. It is an unnecessary implementation to the OS.
It's harder said than done when a lot of the implementation still relies on legacy compatibility. Nearly every program written relies on time in some way and changing the implementation can cause unexpected results.
Idea: Why instead of put 2000 and older put the minimum date on the year who released that windows. Like 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 Starting from the year on that windows launched. It has more sense
yes, from what i understood Windows has some certificates that "expire" later in years, and of course there wont be Windows 11 updates that renews the certificates in 10000, becuase first of all i think that humanity will be long gone
It would be interesting if I use search engine Google at 2005 where youtube was established. Usually, if you type video that uploaded 2010, it can't search nor found.
Can someone explain how the date on a Windows machine can be so bad even hardware speaking, I can't understand why the CPU usage is so high only for a big date on the calendar.? Also I've heard a lot of times about the millenium bug, but never dag too deep into it.
Well im not an expert on computers. But date and time on Windows isn't like smartphones, many activity and processes depends on the date and time system to work normally.
My PC used to have trouble connecting to internet, took me like 3 hours to fix, tried unplugging the LAN cable and plugged it back in, reset the router, change IP,etc...None of them work, until i realized the date and time on my PC is running a few minutes earlier than the real time, adjusted that and boom, internet works like normal.
ur telling me every 10000 years i have to reset my pc to year 0 to account for this BS? idc if it's only once every 10,000 years MS needs to fix their shit. first there were issues every 2000 years, now it's every 10000
There are a few other ways of writing the date in the year 10000 ten thousand , 10k,10,000 or in Roman numerals which is xm , x for the ten and m for the thousand
I bet that bugs related to the year 10000 will not be fixed by say 9950 (afer all it's still far away right?) or whatever and that at least some systems will have encounter some kind of problems when the date roll ovsr
Setting the year to 10000 on Windows 11 would likely cause some issues with the operating system, as it is not designed to handle such a large date.
One of the most common issues that could occur is related to file timestamps. When a file is created or modified, the operating system records the date and time of that event as a timestamp. If the year is set to 10000, the timestamps for files created or modified after that date would be inaccurate. This could cause problems with file management, such as sorting or searching for files by date.
In addition, some applications that rely on the system clock may not function properly if the year is set to such a high value. For example, if a program is designed to check for updates once a day, but the system clock is set to 10000, the program may not be able to determine when a day has passed and may not function correctly.
It's also possible that other unforeseen issues could arise, as the Windows 11 operating system is not designed to operate under such conditions. Therefore, it's generally not recommended to set the year to an unrealistic value like 10000, as it could cause problems with the proper functioning of the system.
what if you were to make a file during the period of time that the date was set to the year 10,000 and then transfer it onto a computer that hasnt had any modifications to the date
in the year 10,000... Covid will mutate again, elon musk will attempt to claim pluto and cover it in bitcoin mining, inflation will be bigger than ye mum, two new consoles will come out, some more movies and games will come out, half life 3 will get it's teaser trailer, james cameron's great great great great great great great great great grandson will make avatar 34, Tom cruise will be immortal, teleportation will NOT happen with humans, but only for bread. Oh and uh... more ohio memes i guess?
Tried it on Manjaro GNOME: -the settings UI lets be go WAAAAY past, but the system time seems to be capped to around 2233 -setting it with the command line also has the same limitation I would look deeper to figure out how to force it to go higher, but i'm too lazy
the reason why the task manager still works you can say thanks Dave's Garage here's his youtube talking about developing and making task manager
https://youtu.be/f8VBOiPV-_M he also made the windows format program
I noticed comsurrogate using the cpu it is possible that the problems you had would be linked to problems and folder permissions possibly the folder permissions have an expiration date, maybe if you wait for Windows it will be able to handle it and get the folder permissions back and it will work normally you could also create a new user profile and possibly the new user windows would be able to connect by having updated permissions.
this is just unlogical test lol prob if u think windows 10 or 11 gonan stay up to 10000 years there is something idk... but yeah there will probably be no windows anymore or either a world

Yo i found a funny way to bypass uac but it is in python. Can someone help me convert the code to C#. It uses some of the functions in the cytypes. Sorry cant share code even though it is 36 lines.
i think a main problem is the indexing feature in the background... that is need to recording every thing what we doing in the pc ... probably the time log on that is not working in this time period.. so always crashing in the background and restarting...
Funny as hell how you can bomb a system just by changing the year to one unaccounted for, because of all Microsoft's added metadata to files to keep tabs on the system. I wonder if that would even affect a Linux system.
FACT: Windows NT base os have a lots of MS certificate system. The certificates are set at the proper time, and before that time expires, the OS functions properly as they are renewed with Windows Update. If the time exceeds the certificate expiration time, the same phenomenon as the video occurs.

whose fucking idea was it to tie performance to date and time (arbitrary values)? Or is it a normal thing and I just don't know anything about OS development?
There is definitely going to be some essential system that was built in 2022, thats still running in the year 9999 and causes havoc on new years day. Knowing our (US) government, it's probably gonna be a nuke controller.
Fun fact: The ribbon UI in file explorer can also be accessed by starting Control Panel and moving up one level (clicking the up button). This lasts until you close the window. You can also get the Windows 7 toolbars in explorer by navigating to Contacts and going back. Just like the ribbon, it will last until the window is closed.

However, that would reach the maximum 32-bit unsigned value (0xFFFF FFFF) in 2038. So most Unix-based systems (Linux, the BSDs, etc.) have converted it to a backward-compatible 64-bit unsigned integer.
0 likes@@AureliusR ohh makes sense. Kinda like the unix time but for 64 bit?

5 likes@@christopherrogers532Y2K happened because computers were expensive and so they had to write the year as 19XX with the XX being replaceable with the year number to save space. So if its 1998, it would appear as the number 98 in the memory and would replace the XX part with 98. But since the millennium was coming, it would have the number 100, causing computers to write 19100 instead of correctly writing 2000. That's a limitation.
7 likesNow rollbacks just happen because it is a fundamental flaw of counting in computers, simply they don't have enough hands to count upon.

16 likesI’m going to take a guess there’s some type of fallback implementation that isolates the core functions... time/date is implemented in APIi calls and anything that is expecting a certain value returned in memory allocated as X bytes is causing a memory address to become invalid so the kernel kills the offending process (which is why explorer and its functions keep dying and restarting).

0 likesI am amazed the OS even boots. While driver signatures are valid by itself, the certificates would have expired by this point.
8 likesI think Windows is trying to restore itself by trying to get a new valid root certificate and update for itself to ensure system health.
And it can't, because SSL (used for the update) doesn't like being outside the valid ranges, as certs specify a valid "not before X" and "not after X". That's why you can't browse the web properly, if you set your system clock f.e 30 years ahead or after today.
Replies (2)
@@katrinabryce Actually not. Certificates themselves are invalid as soon their expiration date is met in UTC+0. Validity ranges from 10 years to 30, internal windows ones even are valid 1000 years. Some are adjusted, means it can take some hours for them to get truely expired. When it comes to SSL, the webserver allows a small time overhead. If you push your clock too far in time (just 24 hours ahead is enough) some servers just outright reject you and throw an error.

It is likely due to some planned obsolesce done by windows not really any particular problem with actually setting the year to something insane
0 likesIn a programming context: Numbers (like the date year) take up space on the harddrive (bits & bytes).

1 likeHow does this not prove planned obsolescence? I’m confused how there can be any innocuous explanation for what we’re experiencing here. Virtually everything stops working–and the API calls which do work take measurably longer–because of nothing more than a date change? Assume clean install. Assume unbloated registry. Assume no Internet connection at all, so there’s no data moving in the background and no attemps to phone home. And it behaves this way?
2 likesEither it’s criminal incompetence in bad coding (tying agnostic physical operations to the literal time and date) or criminal incompetence in sales (planned obsolescence). So which is it?

Year 8000: rip windows
0 likestime is used to store alot of things edits on file EVen events that happen on windows errors are logged based on time, on event viewer , time is also used for security checks and certifieds. some banks security that allow u to login also use time checks as they give a very small time gap for u to be able to use, so if a attacker try the same info on another time it rejects etc, time is used on system for many many things specially security, however this is something they can easily fix or patch but theres no reason as we will not use this system till year 9999

0 likesSlick design! 🔥
0 likesSetting the year to 10000 on Windows 11 would likely cause some issues with the operating system, as it is not designed to handle such a large date.
1 likeOne of the most common issues that could occur is related to file timestamps.

0 likesI noticed comsurrogate using the cpu it is possible that the problems you had would be linked to problems and folder permissions possibly the folder permissions have an expiration date, maybe if you wait for Windows it will be able to handle it and get the folder permissions back and it will work normally you could also create a new user profile and possibly the new user windows would be able to connect by having updated permissions.

0 likesNow everyone knows you're terrorist and rapist by blood
lol you're from rusia. Suck on it, ape
0 likesFunny as hell how you can bomb a system just by changing the year to one unaccounted for, because of all Microsoft's added metadata to files to keep tabs on the system. I wonder if that would even affect a Linux system.

0 likesSet year to 10000 and computer slows down, now set computer to year -10000 and hack the world with fastest computer in world
0 likesFACT: Windows NT base os have a lots of MS certificate system. The certificates are set at the proper time, and before that time expires, the OS functions properly as they are renewed with Windows Update. If the time exceeds the certificate expiration time, the same phenomenon as the video occurs.

0 likesMicrosoft aren't planning to continue support for Windows 11 to the year 9999? What an evil, scammy company!
0 likeswhose fucking idea was it to tie performance to date and time (arbitrary values)? Or is it a normal thing and I just don't know anything about OS development?
0 likesThere is definitely going to be some essential system that was built in 2022, thats still running in the year 9999 and causes havoc on new years day. Knowing our (US) government, it's probably gonna be a nuke controller.
