"Doing pony fan work is hurting our chances to enter the professional industry." "Also, we turned down the opportunity to work professionally, in order to work on pony fan work."
I really doubt it's a situation as simple as that. Hasbro probably wanted their skills but they faced issues where Hasbro not only forced them to drop working on fan content but also take down their previous work, while giving them little in return.
It's interesting that you post this since I've been having more and more thoughts about separating myself from the fandom, not necessarily because of "cringe" or whatever, but just lack of interest -- but you make a valid point, which was also one of the conclusions I came to, which is that you can still do pony stuff while doing all the other things you want to do, just as I've been doing over the past couple of years; looking back, I see no real reason that things should be any different now.
There's a bunch of stuff I could say, but pretty much all of it echoes what was detailed here, so good on you for covering your bases. Always like hearing your opinions.
Woot dropping those sick beats, and not the musical kind, to the people feeding into the cynicism of fandom content. While I am not 100% with you on every point, pretty much most of them are well founded. Keep these coming man, we need more people talking about this kind of stuff. P.S. Thanks for the plug! Was honestly surprised to hear that at the end. Gave me a big ol' smile :D
Can we have this on EQD instead? Nah, but in all honestly I love your rants mostly because of the passion & honesty tied to it. It shows your loyalty towards this fandom & there is so much truth tied to it. I agree with you & I'll always have that fandom love, because if we're not spreading love then what point is there for the opposite <3
The article felt like it was giving invitations to leave the fandom. As if their work was never going to be good enough for anything. I'm glad you called the shit out. Even if it was a opinion article, something like that on the leading pony site kinda makes it truth in peoples eyes.
"Working on pony won't help you creatively" Boï, I decided to start music when I saw a live of brony musicians at a convention and now I'm working with singers from fuckin' Two Steps From Hell. I highly doubt I would have been this far without the fandom. Heck, I wouldn't even be a composer at this moment! This Vicodin guy talks bullshit, and it's coming from someone who isn't as hyped from the show as I once was.
tbh main reason I hate the pony fandom doomers is I entered the game late. I never got a chance to go to any of the big pony conventions because I was young and unable to travel across the country myself. I'm still interested in this show and still enjoy people's art, music and stories about it. I think many other people are too. It doesn't make sense to say pack up and leave already, the fandom doesn't die until we do. Maybe it'll never be the meme-filled S1-2 frenzy, but honestly that's fine. There was a fandom of a sort before G4 even existed, but older and more female, the kind of people who collected 80s pony figures from their youth. There will always be people who love to talk about ponies, it'll just be a chiller, smaller kind of fandom.
I remember seeing ABagOfVicodin being on the joint Horse-News/EQD panel at Pacific Ponycon 2016, and he struck me as the literal embodiment of "No Fun Allowed." He didn't make any jokes, unironically acted angry and smug towards about anyone, and saw himself as superior above everyone. I, and a lot of folks, get along with a lot of the EQD staff, Gameleon, Seth, etc - except ABoV. That dude has some serious issues.
I don't usually descend into the autism of EqD editorials, and when I do I don't particularly care what they say, but this article caught my attention for the reasons you described, and it gave me the same impression it did you, so I'm glad to see I wasn't alone on that. I also don't usually descend into the autism of youtube rants, but yours are so on point I'm glad to make an exception. Keep up the good work.
11:40 - my dude 1. What you say here is exactly what I did. I was not nearly as good, or as driven to be good, until I started creating pony content. 2. Noice pic there. ;p 3. You're my hero.
Truth be told, I know nothing of your fandom nor why I was brought here, a dash of film theory and current movie reviews I guess. But I have dealt on the fandom side of things when it comes to other interests and I myself, not related to MLP, am an animation/3d modeler. I have been in the industry for a good number of years and after recent work dried up (company closed) I went on to freelancing under web design. Well that is hit and miss so in the spare time I actually decided to see what was out there and found LoE. Because my old contacts are long gone I made new ones just so happened to be in your little fandom and they are great people. Thing is, I wasn't at all embarrassed to put that on my resume or use that to add as recent works to my portfolio, because the last thing I worked on was the Jurassic Park game and that has been a while.
Long story short it was though my time working on essentially a pony game that I actually was able to build contacts and my portfolio and actually get job offers. Working on any work, fan based or not, is still work and no one is ever tiring you down. Encouraging others to stop what they love is bullshit in every way and frankly I see people of all kinds. For anyone to encourage and artist to stop painting is no better than someone who pushes someone else off a bridge. They are a monster in every way and frankly you should be listening to other people. Hats off to you for bringing up this issue, sadly it isn't just your own fandom that suffers from idiots like this. If EQD was smart, they would get rid of this "Journalist" and have a retraction if not already since this is after all October.
Woot dropping a knowledge bomb yet again. The pressure of being put that high up in the fandom seem to push common sense out of some peoples brain some times lol.
Content-wise I (mostly) agreed with what you were saying. EqD and many of its staff has frankly hit quite the high horse lately, this article being one example among many. They even brush off a lot of kind, respectful and constructive criticism, all the while making a big deal about how they're not afraid to take criticism on their website.
And while it's easily not ALL THE HORSE FAMOUS BRONIES who've cause these issues, not even close, it's worth mentioning that it's primarily quote-on-quote "horse famous" bronies like Sethisto who are the ones causing and perpetuating these problems... if a very, very small faction of them. Not all of them are doing it on purpose, mind you, but that doesn't change the fact that they very much are part of all this and very much are defending their actions despite the dissenting voices.
But, there's really nothing I can truly add to the discussion, at least not on this video. I want to help debunk this "fandom is dying" (or "dying down") stigma at some point, but I'll do that another time, and likely on my own channel if anything.
Such wise words, just wow. I actually hadn't known about this sadly, but now that I do, I'm really triggered now heh. Welp, I'll just see what plays out from here, hopefully it doesn't go full shitstorm.
I stumbled across this channel for the myoozix and all it has to offer. The myoosic is great but I fucking love the "LeafyIsHere vibe" (Or pony drama news or whatever its called). Its so much better than Moliminous and the fucking clickbaity shit he puts out. subs
I've never said the fandom is dead, just changing. Opinion pieces on EQD aren't a reflection of EQD's views. Most of us are still pony pony most of the time. Some like to branch out though. I in particular (Sethisto) haven't done anything on BCB or Desu Daily. They are just friend sites we prop up. I have 0 interest in starting any other sites right now, partly because im lazy, but mostly because I don't see any other fandom as exciting as pony.
None of us want pony to go anywhere and we will still be reporting on everything good fandomside as long as it's still around.
Now I honestly didn't want to but I found what I assume to be the article that you said was 100% against this [it was: Pondering the Peak by Silver Quill- https://www.equestriadaily.com/2017/04/editoral-pondering-peak.html#more] and forced myself to read it because thats THE PROFESSIONAL THING TO DO. low and behold its not 100% against the current piece in question. It actually just focuses on how the fandom's not dead, and he actually seems to be AGREEING with what the previous article said(AS IF IT WASNT BAD ENOUGH)...
little disappointed seth, BUT we all make mistakes, the point is to LEARN (from them).
Anyways even if that article was 100% against it, it would be better for the sake of a WELL ROUNDED ARGUMENT to have the opinion and any rebuttals in the same place so things wouldn't become SO ONE SIDED ahem which is, I believe, the reason for this unfortunate series of events.
Also... say what you will about "its not the official opinion". If I own a news source, thats my responsibility. if my news source spouts some opinions, then theyre on my hands. I understand that the point of saying theyre not yours is probably just so you dont have to delete them/take responsibility. Its just disappointing to see more one sided articles(refer to above argument)and also disappointing when no ones going to take responsibility.[[INSERT WHOLE OTHER RANT HERE]](and yes I heavily edited this particular section because my previous argument was not the best(taking responsibility))
and arguments aside, real glad to see the accused party at least join the conversation here. thanks for that, it really surprised me. Respect for showing up +1.
(then again) IMeanYouSayYouWantDiverseOpinionsButWhatIfTheyHaveNegativeOutcomesThenAgainThatsKindOfAPointOfThisVideoAndYoureProbablyNeverGonnaSeeThisSOOOO. ye. sorry couldnt help myself.
I totally understand wanting to have opinions, and opinions are fine, but my issue with this article is that its clickbait-y as hell. The person who wrote it could very easy have changed the topic and made it a lot less attention grabby for the sole purpose of garnering attention to such a negative topic. Not all of us may want Duo Cartoonist to be stopping, but they're free to do that. There is no need to an article like this to have as much attention as its getting, and the writer of it very clearly isn't someone who knows how to write a proper article.
Equestria Daily Literally fucking damage control. The initial piece is already out there throwing out a counter narrative doesnt mean anything and trying to couch it in the excuse of "Anti echochamber" is lazy at best and willingly disingenuous at worst
You pay the price for letting anyone post opinion pieces and it catching on. Take responsibility for what you allow people to publish, you take responsibility as an editor for your actual news, opinion shit should as well. Opinion pieces still should be held to standard.
I find it a little insulting when people talk about such a big named fandom content creator leaving and saying "oh shit the fandoms dead and/or dying". That hurts. That says to me that they are very narrow minding and not really willing to seek out and support any of the other people who need views/ support getting quality stuff out there. It sounds like it's only 'dead' because the person they liked is gone not because there is no more content creators. I mean I'm a football/ soccer fan and I love my team. I had a favourite player and I got his name on a shirt and I got his signature. I loved everything he did for my team in the years he was there but eventually he had to retire and move on. When he did I didn't think to myself oh god well that's it my team are done for, their dead - history, no I thought to myself "thank you for your service to what I love, your contribution will always be remembered" and then I turned my focus to the new up and coming members to see who to follow next.
Also I have to agree while an individual content creator may not want to use the pony content that have created on a showreel, if I produced some of my best work and it had ponies it then any self respecting employer should be able to look past the ponies to the skill, creativity and hard work that put that piece of work together cause I'd be bloody proud of it.
Excellent video as usual! Though, I must ask: At 5:40 you said you have everyone on a countdown timer...so when do I flip the table and delete everything?
If you Take money via Kickstarter or other sides, You should be obligated to finish a Project... or Work on it till you realy Hit a Wall like a C&D.... This is a d*ck move...
Honestly. I expected a much better article. Instead of defending fanwork, and saying this double standard in the animation industry is shit, the man just copped out??????
