Is not strange for non-ACPI PCs.
I try to install Windows 95 on DOSBox and shut it down.
Then the text "It's now safe to turn off your computer" shows until I close DOSBox.

Bois... it's 512 for 4 mths of pre 2nd edition then Second Edition Ver .1 had 512 ram support... then Mac OSX 8.1 gave support for 1gig ram so Second Edition Ver .2.4 via Windows Update gave support for 1 gig of ram... very glitchy stuff tho... it wasn't "perfected" untill Windows 2000 which gave the first 2 gig support and paved way for x64 bit processors and much later added Windows XP x64 bit edition which was 2003/2004...

I know this video is old and your question has probably been answered, my understanding as the 9x kernel is built ontop of DOS, it will assume anything more than 1GB of RAM (1024MB) would overflow and result in a negative RAM value. I got it to boot on 1.1GB RAM (1152MB). Some examples of this can happen on some older program installations such as Sims 1 when you have more than 2GB of RAM in your system.

Take this with a grain of salt as I'm not 100% sure if this is true, I know patches exist and workarounds but realistically, I don't think there's any program that'll run on any Windows 9x system that'll be able to utilise more than 1GB of RAM. Not to mention Wikipedia states 98 is not designed to work with more than 1GB, this cited to a Microsoft page but no longer works as it "doesn't redirect properly" anymore

Earlier versions of windows, earlier than windows 95, actually work with extended RAM. They just are limited to the 32-bit capacity, which is a little under 4gb.

I know this is old, but from what I heard its because of the memory manager, thee is actually a patch that allows it to work with 4GB (there is also a patch that improves performance on systems with more than 128MB, part of the unofficial service pack iirc, but you can prob get it separately), there are also patches that help it with faster CPUs, although still single core only for obvious reasons. I've had good luck with the patches just messing around in VMs, but as those VMs dont have proper driver support, I wasn't really able to test anything like games (as a stability test), may see if I can get it going in qemu (which supports emulating a cirrus logic card as the gpu). Although TBH, anything over half a gig is absolutely overkill for Windows 98 (then again setting up overkill builds can be fun). Another note, with Windows 98 at least, the official limit is 1GB of RAM unpatched, but I've heard anything over 700MB can be unstable, but as I said with the memory and CPU patches, it works fine with the little testing I've done..

Using 2 GB makes it overflow, so it tries to fix it by understanding the GB as MB, but 2 MB isn't enough for Windows 98.

On DOS based Windows(or DOS In General), the RAM Support is capped at around 1 GB for 16-bit versions of DOS and Windows based on DOS. 32-bit versions of DOS and Windows based on DOS will officially Support 2 GB of RAM (or it's suppose to anyway). Because of that Limitations(Among many other reasons), the NT Kernel was introduced in Consumer Windows. the most notable release would be Windows XP, the first consumer Windows with the NT technology. 32-bits were now capped at 4 GB because of physical limitations of the Processor. Every version of Windows after XP (Vista, 7, 8.1 and 10) have been based off of NT Technology.

Overload of ram can cause graphical contrast dispder and also overwhelmingly heat the CPU . To percent the action of overheating Microsoft has disinged win 98 and other of it's is to allow the software to run on sufficient bits of ram which gets removed after the realse of win 7

Windows 98, and all of the 9x DOS cores does not like more than a GB of ram, and cannot initialize Windows, and thinks that there's not enough RAM to start windows and stops. If you somehow remove this check though, it possibly can boot, but will have problems. This protection is made to protect your sensitive data.

As far as I know:
What happens is Vcache (the disk cache in RAM) consumes more RAM as the total system RAM goes up.
At a certain point Vcache consumes so much RAM during boot that the system fails to boot.
This point is, depending on the software and updates you have installed, around 1GB of RAM.

Windows 98 doesn't support that much ram. In fact, if you use too much, it can not handle it and then it treats it as a very low amount of ram that it can handle (which is usually about 4mb) and windows can barely or wont run on it. It is recommended to use 512mb or less.

Windows 98's RAM filesytem doesn't detect such amount of RAM. So it probably crashed and tell the bootloader random ram numbers that were very small. So bootloader decides to not proceed to evit overheating and components damage.

It's because FAT32, which windows 98 runs on, has an inefficient data usage which causes it to have to limit itself to read only small chunks of data so that there is no increased data rot especially in the memory as if it's main systems for managing quick data changes were too big for FAT32 to read, lots of data may be damaged, this was changed in NTFS (windows vista+) but it relied on how many different combinations of binary E.G. 32Bit = 192 different combinations (which before xp was only 16 bit) was why XP can have 2gb+ RAM but 64 bit NTFS maximum RAM is apparently 2000GB but unfortunetly whith our current RAM sticks, we can only get 128GB of RAM.

This happens because Windows 98 is an old system and by that time 128MB of RAM were available, so Microsoft had only support for low amounts of RAM like that and couldn't support higher RAM amounts like 2GB or 4GB and so on. As Microsoft only expected those quantities of RAM by the time Windows 98 was released they only supported that. Try setting low quantities of RAM like 128MB or if you want you can try 1GB. (I know this is an old video and he has probably fixed this but this is for people that want to test old OS'es like Windows 98 or 95)

because win98 is designed run on a 512mb ram machine and this is a very huge number , that means in that time 2GB of ram = 64GB of ram nowadays. So it is totally normal and it will only recognize 640kb of ram.and 640kb is way too small to WIN98

It’s because Windows 98 can’t address that much memory, so it gets confused and quits. Either that, or it’s getting some weird number of RAM, and that weird number isn’t enough, so it dies.

Considering that not even the edit command would be avaiable, tecnically yes, but not that usefull.
But anyone has at least around 20mb to at least have some extentions, some other tools, third party boot menus and tools, maybe another dos extender, etc.
Not mentioning that its not so hard to fill out a 1gb space with msdos installers (copyied from the floppies) and the programs themselves.

Edit: just remembered, technically i can install linux in something like a few megs, maybe 30-40mb, but its also barebones.

Its becase this windows is a hybrid 16 and 32 bit system. Its mixed with dos. So it cant read (and allocate) more than 1gb of ram, so it dont allocate any ram becase it cant read all of the installed and crashes becase it dont have any ram.
Windows 95 is limited to something like 768mb of ram, and doesnt like 1gb.
But there is some patchs/fix to make win98 read more than 1gb of ram. I dont know why would you need more ram to windows 98 anyway, but it can be done even for windows 95.

To be strait with you... back in those days 256 DDR b2 are equal to our 256 GB DDR4 sticks and adding on that these sticks did not have support until PRE-WINDOWS 2000 via Windows Update... so having 2 Gigs of ram is equal to a stack overflow unless hax are thrown into play.... GAWD.... those days sucked.... Gaming PC for 1998 = 1400$ and had a pentium 2, 1gb ram, Vudu graphics 24mb vram (nVidia was not widely known), 50gb HHD rpm 2400, some very chunky motherboard.... and that grey-yellow plastic casing, USB 1.0... yeah..... also Mac was a wide choice during this age as they updated their ui like nobody's concern... so it was alot more appealing.... I prefer you reserve some time for reserch during this era... as 1997-2001 was the BOOM that shaped our pc's nowadays..

AFAIK, I think that Windows 98 SE was only supported up until 2004 or so. By then, the max I think it could support was 512 MB, since you'd have to have Win XP to support anything more than that, iirc. Could be wrong, though. Not to mention that I'd have to think that 160GB HDDs are perhaps the most capacity that Win 98 SE could support.

Robert Morin There were many pentium 3 motherboards that suported up to 1gb. Yours support less... But you tried one stick of 1gb or two of 512mb? Because if the motherboard supports up to 1gb, it needs two 512mb sticks to accomplish that. I have two amd durons, one support up to 1gb and other support up to 2gb i think.
But yeah, its common to find old motherboards limited to 512mb, its because their chipset.

Well, true, but I think that anything released prior to a Pentium 4 PC, maybe it's the Dell OptiPlex I have Win 98 SE on, it seems the GX110 only can take up to 512 MB (probably because it was a small form factor desktop).

Windows 98 was made in a time when 2GB of RAM was thought to be impossible, however due to the 32bit integer limit any number higher than this limit would simply be turned negative so that it could still keep counting so basically Windows 98 thnks you have negative memory

@@thevectrex1482 is 2GB actually the problem or is it just the what enderman chose to use? @@Scoopta Well clearly something is going on so if it's not an overflow I dunno what it could be. I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to use signed ints for no reason, and clearly 2GB is causing weirdness on its own, so the logical conclusion would be that it's using signed ints. Unless of course it's completely unrelated to overflow.

after the windows NT or windows new technology
the windows can support infinity ram if the hardware supports 9 terabytes of RAM the windows will run but he not gonna use all te RAM on DOS the limit of RAM is limited because the DOS don't use the architecture POSIX
you can read more on these links
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POSIX
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT
on DOS the limit of RAM is selected by the binaries of the windows 95 and DOS
today on windows 10 the DOS is used on CMD and emulated by windows NT
however the windows NT continue to have death screens :(
but with a less frequency on DOS you can wipe the drive that contains DOS when the DOS is running test this

My best guess is that Windows 98 is a 32-bit operating system that works on two's complement binary system. With that, it's memory range would go up to a bit under 2GB, and when the limit is breeched it will flip around and go to around -2GB, and the system will interpret it as such.

Guys, Windows 98 can't handle more than 512MB ram.

actually it can handle up to a gig, not up to half a gig. Maybe you've never used a Windows 98 computer with between 512 and 1024MB of RAM.

Raymond Chen wrote an entire article on this I think. The vmm32 that’s included in windows 9x starts sapping away RAM after you reach 512 megs. There was a man by the name of Rudolph Loew who fixed it, but he sadly passed away. However, you could ask the msfn forum if someone has the patch.
