Don't for a moment think that Microsoft isn't culpable here. CrowdSrike pulled the the trigger, but MS gave them the gun. 1. Linux being open source means writing and testing drivers is much easier and people are more likely to help you test them on their systems because of that 2. Its standard practice in enterprise linux systems to snapshot the kernel and drivers (what linux calls modules) when a new one is installed, and the previous ones can be selected from the bootloader, before linux even starts. This simple feature that linux ecosystem has had since before I even started using it would have made recovery trivial, if tedious. Windows is its own bootloader, meaning even if this was an option, this would have hosed it anyways. 3. By being a gaping wound, security-wise, this sort of software is mandatory on any Windows system to begin with.
Windows is not an operating system that can be relied on for mission-critical systems, and every business and government organization that did so should not be in any way surprised.
The funny thing is Windows has (or at least had) a "Last known good configuration" option which does exactly this. But the thing is (based on what I've heard) the CrowdStrike driver loads executable code directly without verification, bypassing any safeties Windows might have.
Well, technically, Microsoft isn't liable. But you are absolutely right. The collateral damage significantly increased because of Windows not having optimized failsafes in place. All my servers are running Linux. There isn't a need for Windows on enterprise systems nowadays, unless there's a demand for proprietary single platform software or extensive work with the GUI.
I mean, technically Windows' design can be blamed for it, like they could have better roll-back measures or stuff, specially for businesses, but, yeah it's definitely not a microsoft outage. The fact that Crowdstrike doesn't have something like a scaling release it's not a good idea. That's what happened to Cloudflare once with their regex rule. You can't just push to everywhere at once. It's a bad idea.

For example: -Hotkeys of user applications and OS conflict with each other. -Context menu buttons get pressed as soon as you release mouse button if the menu is created close to edge of screen. -Audio can get easily corrupted on Ubuntu for unknown reasons. -Screen scaling barely works. -I have to pick very specific wifi receiver that doesn't have any technologies that require proprietary drivers. Otherwise I have to add someone else's code and recompile whole kernel, which I tried and did not succeed despite following instructions.

Some of them were affected though, like Vietjet Air and ACV (Airports Corp. of Vietnam, which operates all airports in Vietnam), but until this time, ACV has came back to operation.

The closest to this that would be possible is the root DNS servers being compromised, leading to a complete breakdown in the chains of trust between routers and servers. This wouldn't be impossible to recover from, it would just be a lot of work.
It'd be really hard for a bug like that to slip through the cracks. Not every company is running the same software nor are they updating at the same time. The closest thing I can think of is a bad Linux kernel update, which even then, that likely won't cause any issues because those bugs are probably already ironed out during the "bleeding edge" stage long before a corporate business even has the chance to update even a singular server to it.
Not the first time I've heard of something like this. Some time ago one retailer I know of had an issue with a dodgy third party update causing bootloops on kiosks.
The solution involved giving employees the admin credentials to manually remove the update.
Funnily enough the moment all of this happened, my pc also started acting weirdly, mainly freezing constantly, showing me a black screen everytime i boot it up, and randomly restarting to install an update, and the thing is i left it on the whole night updating and it still told me that the update failed, i tried updating it today but still nothing changed, idk if its an issue with microsoft because i dont use crowdtrike at all
It is absolutely hilarious that no one in the company tested software that billions of computers would use. The odds of this happening in open-source software would be much, much lower. Also, CrowdStrike should be shamed for not knowing to use a VM.
In the case of Y2K, the chipsets were reconfigured by a batch basic program, after which the code of the boot table was changed and thus the keys were not suitable for loading anything. although the keys can be rewritten from BIOS or under DOS.
When I was first told about this, I thought this was EVERY windows machine, including consumers and others. That would've been a nightmare if that was the cause.
Yeah. The crash only affected the local machines that use Windows, any kind of personal computer is considered private, so that's why they didn't get updated or crashed
The fault with Windows here is its ability to give out unregulated backdoors to organisations. Nothing is cosigned by microsoft, the user, or other users before the changes are made to the PC. There are no eyes watching anything proprietary. That is what makes closed source dangerous.
while it is not windows' fault it still shows that windows is designed quite poorly in this regard, as it wouldn't be that wild to expect that a kernel driver can fail on boot. microsoft could have implemented a tool that can automatically reinstall kernel/disable broken module or simply do what modern linux distros do and keep a previous version of kernel (and all its drivers etc) as a backup and load it instead in case something breaks
also it is kinda wild that one company that most people didn't even know about can have so much influence
Bruh, I was on a drive with my family to Canberra and never knew about this until that night when the late night news was on talking about it (I was in a grocery store and saw the self service machines in a BSOD loop but thought the machines themselves were acting up lmao)

Stop clickbaiting the tiktokers.
Y2K never happened and never will happen. This is the closest event in effect to Y2K to actually happen, so I see it as a valid analogy. All the clickbait has already been done before me, and I'm just here covering it.
Wasn't it bootlooping before it even got to fully booted to the point the network stack could activate and the Falcon software is smart enough to quickly update before it crashes again? Or after?

Because the crash only affected the local machines that use Windows, any kind of personal computer is considered private, so that's why they didn't get updated or crashed
I disagree. Microsoft does have a share of the fault. Windows should have protections to avoid these situations. The idea that it is impossible is just not acceptable. Yes, drivers in kernel mode can cause crashes, so what? Microsoft should find a way to make situations like this manageable. I can think of a few strategies: forcing driver developers to go through an independent review, or maybe Microsoft itself doing a review similar to Apple's App Store for these cases, or maybe disabling the failing driver if it causes a boot loop crash? So yeah, Crowdstrike made the driver but Microsoft owns the operating system, and conceptually the operating system owns the computer itself.
If this was a case of an invalid memory access, then maybe Microsoft should force driver developers to use develop them using languages that make those impossible by design, like Rust for instance
@@Expt629-BrInStAr That's because Crowdstrike's bug affected Windows so much, that it crashed. So, instead of displaying a BSOD with the ":(", it displayed the Recovery screen.

@@Endermanch I think calling this "major windows outage day" in the first place is an oversimplification, missing the role of crowdstrike in this incident. I have a browser extension that automatically replaces "stupid video titles" with crowd sourced suggestions. The leading suggestion right now and the title of your video for every user of this extension is "The Windows Crowdstrike Program Incident". Another suggestion in this extension is "The CrowdStrike incident which caused millions of computers to brick themselves". See - for me - "dying" means simply dying on its own. As soon as a third party is directly involved in someone/-what "dying" - it's usually no longer just called "dying". Windows didn't just die (active form) - Windows got f**ked (passive form).
So calling a major Windows outage day «the day Windows actually died» is stupid, considering the Y2K fearmonger in 1999 everybody was anticipating? Suggest me a better one, and if it's actually good, I'll consider renaming the video.
Now imagine that a big portion of these affected machines worldwide were using Bitlocker by W11. It essentially escalated into a Wannacry situation, just with the most secure encryption provided by Microsoft lol. Goes to show how catastrophic being dependant on only one live service could be.
For you guys (especially IT admins) that have the CrowdStrike Falcon antivirus installed and would like a permanent fix for Windows boot loop error, here are the steps: 1) On the "Recovery" screen, click on "See advanced repair options". 2) "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Startup Settings" 3) Click on "Restart". 4) When the "Startup Settings" screen pops up, hit the '4' key to boot into "Safe Mode". 5) Once in "Safe Mode", press the Windows key + 'R' (Win + R) to open up the "Run" dialogue box. 6) Type in exactly the following: %windir%\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike Then hit Enter. 7) Once the "File Explorer" app has been opened with this file path, click on the search bar above and type exactly the following "C-00000291*.sys". 8) Click on that file and hit the "Delete" key. 9) Restart the PC. 10) Fingers crossed 🤞 11) The PCs should now start up normally and you can log back in.
Next steps once it's fixed: 1) Stop using CrowdStrike's crap! 2) Look for several alternatives to CrowdStrike Falcon antivirus that are well-suited for businesses, organisations, and institutions. I'd suggest looking for these alternatives (according to what A.I. gave me): ➡️ Microsoft Defender for Endpoint ➡️ Bitdefender GravityZone ➡️ Sophos Intercept X ➡️ Panda Security Adaptive Defense ➡️ Trend Micro Apex One

This incident was orchestrated by time-travelling dinosaurs. Case closed. Illuminati confirmed.
My local government information site (for my state) actually has a large banner as of right now saying" "Commonwealth services are back online, as are public safety services like 911 dispatch centers. Thanks to our team and our local partners for your hard work this morning." Actual 911 dispatch centers in my area were offline because of this. Imagine someone in a life or death situation not being able to call 911 because of CrowdStrike drivers. Imagine someone DYING because of CrowdStrike drivers. I guess Y2K really did happen, just 24 years late. We're lucky this didn't last for long though, or else the effects could've been even more devastating.
Edit: Actually, last night around 11pm I was trying to use MS365 PowerPoint (which is online) and it just wouldn't load. Try after try. This isn't unusual, maybe slightly, since it had an actual error code linked to it, but I think that was kind of the start of this whole thing.
This definitely shows how very incompetent tech companies have become over the past decade. They don't care about customers and what they want anymore these days. It has been more at pleasing shareholders than anything else.
1001 likesThe SaaS (Software as a Service) business model that tech companies have been pushing hard for the past decade is flawed. It means no real user control over their products. Instead, they update the product for you automatically, which we all know leads to a lot of the buggy Microsoft Windows updates that we seem to get every month.
These tech companies really need to re-evaluate their software testing practices, especially after this entire mess.
The tech industry is becoming a laughing stock by each passing year.

Don't for a moment think that Microsoft isn't culpable here. CrowdSrike pulled the the trigger, but MS gave them the gun.
23 likes1. Linux being open source means writing and testing drivers is much easier and people are more likely to help you test them on their systems because of that

@@mrfoxesite4482 I've been using linux for 3 years.
0 likesI'm using Linux (Ubuntu) right now.
And from personal experience I say "no". And as a system for PC it sucks.
Many things that work out of the box and are convenient on Windows require user to mess around with system files and barely work on Linux.
For example:
-Hotkeys of user applications and OS conflict with each other.
The ONLY things Linux I found to be good for are low-level programming and, probably, creating servers and system administration. Many command line tools allow you to control every point of how your code gets compiled. And there are lots of convenient programs to monitor network.

What? Open-source also doesn't prevent the user from doing something stupid.

the faulty code can have such an impact purely because of the backwards way that windows handles drivers, it's near impossible for a mere driver to totally wreck the system in the same manner from a cause so insignificant, add onto that the fact that you can't get a win10/11 live usb to repair your system from, rather you have to rely on the proprietary, dubious windows installation media tools
1 likePartially true. Windows 10 isn’t too bad. Windows 11 is awful.

0 likesThis is why I would recommend businesses to get Linux. It's free, there are hundreds of distros that act just like Windows (Wubuntu for example), and it is more secure due to the GNU kernel having built in antivirus capabilities. Has anyone noticed a pattern?
9 likes>Microsoft releases Windows 11
>Car dealerships experience outages
>The entire world experiences outages
Note--Even though I absoultely, positively, HATE Windows with a passion, I hate when the news and lamestream media says "Microsoft Outage" when it actually was Crowdstrike's dumb update that affected Windows computers, which can't handle it. I agree with Noah Evans. 0:51

@@Windows2000Professional.s And what you said goes back to my point—businesses use Windows and macOS simply because it’s easy to install stuff, it supports a lot of things Linux doesn’t, and it is familiar because of the Michael Scott mentality of “the founder had it, my papa had it, so I have it.”
1 like@@Windows2000Professional.s That’s the only problem with Linux: so many programmers and developers saying different things, getting into arguments, while the teams at Apple and Microsoft likely get along on most things. I love both free and proprietary. I love proprietary software just because it works most of the time (no learning code just to install a web browser) and I love how free software doesn’t require subscriptions or agreements (EULA, Office 365), just software that people need. I also love how you are free to create your own Linux distro.
0 likes@@JesseJones-nv3vd Here's the issue tho... It's had a history of database leaks and the developer insulting an author, just made me have a negative impression of Wubuntu.
0 likes@@Windows2000Professional.s I love Zorin! The reason why I said Wubuntu is because businesses might be used to it since they use Windows all the time.
1 likeWhy Wubuntu and not Zorin? Zorin, is a lot more clean with it's history.
0 likes@@alfo2804I guess so, also, businesses probably don’t want to work on their computer all day long, they want the computer to work for them. So that’s why they get Windows, since macOS is mostly used by artists and software developers, not major governments and organizations. Linux is made for programmers and made by programmers!
1 likeLinux distros that act like Windows are novelties, not something that should actually be used in any serious way. It's just going to confuse anyone who isn't extremely knowledgeable, and honestly even people who do know what's going on are also going to be tripped up by it because it fucks with your muscle memory. They're about as useful as those shells for Windows that make it look like MacOS.

0 likesim a fan of shaun's theory, it feels the most likely to me. a file that exists but doesnt actually have any data feels like an error of a file system or hardware, and i'd like to hope they test their new updates at least on ONE computer before they send them out...
0 likesbut that doesn't excuse deploying an update globally without at least testing some canaries first. but i dont work in tech (yet)
if a malicious actor corrupted the file intentionally, to me it feels like either petty revenge than a truly malicious threat actor. if i had access to the files that are updated and sent out globally, id install a back door instead of loudly alerting my presence by crashing every system its deployed on.

0 likesErie County (Erie) - Government offices were shut off but Emergency Services were fully functional
Crawford County (Meadville) - Government Paychecks were delayed for some people
Warren County (Warren) - No real noticeable impacts
Also one of the news anchor from the area had to take a rental car from Milwaukee because his flight was canceled
(For a regional impact it could had been a lot worse especially up in Erie County the saving grace was the fact that EMS functions are on another server)
Always thought the brand-name 'CrowdStrike' had unfortunate possibilities. Bet they rename to something more beige and neutral in next couple of months...

0 likesI disagree.

@@Endermanch Thanks for the conversation. Good riddance.
0 likes@@Endermanch I think calling this "major windows outage day" in the first place is an oversimplification, missing the role of crowdstrike in this incident.
0 likesI have a browser extension that automatically replaces "stupid video titles" with crowd sourced suggestions.

Because of Apple's walled in garden
1 likeAnd lot of corporate software is written exclusively for Windows
because enterprises can't just switch to mac, it would be way too expensive and impractical since you would have to rewrite everything for mac

For you guys (especially IT admins) that have the CrowdStrike Falcon antivirus installed and would like a permanent fix for Windows boot loop error, here are the steps:
0 likes1) On the "Recovery" screen, click on "See advanced repair options".
2) "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Startup Settings"
3) Click on "Restart".
4) When the "Startup Settings" screen pops up, hit the '4' key to boot into "Safe Mode".
5) Once in "Safe Mode", press the Windows key + 'R' (Win + R) to open up the "Run" dialogue box.
6) Type in exactly the following: %windir%\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike
Then hit Enter.
7) Once the "File Explorer" app has been opened with this file path, click on the search bar above and type exactly the following "C-00000291*.sys".
8) Click on that file and hit the "Delete" key.
9) Restart the PC.
10) Fingers crossed 🤞
11) The PCs should now start up normally and you can log back in.
Next steps once it's fixed:
1) Stop using CrowdStrike's crap!
2) Look for several alternatives to CrowdStrike Falcon antivirus that are well-suited for businesses, organisations, and institutions.
I'd suggest looking for these alternatives (according to what A.I. gave me):
➡️ Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
➡️ Bitdefender GravityZone
➡️ Sophos Intercept X
➡️ Panda Security Adaptive Defense
➡️ Trend Micro Apex One
Alternatively, switch to Linux!

@@thebluelord_25 no it bc people mainly dont use Falcon as their antiviros
0 likesBecause it only affected the local machines, laptops and personal computers are considered private, so that's why they didn't crash.

2 likes"Commonwealth services are back online, as are public safety services like 911 dispatch centers.
Thanks to our team and our local partners for your hard work this morning."
Actual 911 dispatch centers in my area were offline because of this.
