The continuum was created in the Netherlands by Hungarian multi-instrumentalist Yoel Schwarcz in 1967. The name "Continuum" was taken from the title of exhibitions of Schwarcz paintings in the London gallery for which he professionally painted His musical ideas developed with the Czech guitarist "Jan", and the following summer they performed as a duo at a club in Amsterdam. RCA entered into a contract with Yoel Schwarcz (not Continuum), and Continuum released his self-titled first album in 1970. Side one of the albums consisted of four improvisations on music by Bach and Handel. The other side was a four-part side long suite composed by non-band member Richard Hartley and based on a poetic work by Lord Byrona.Do in 1971, only Schwarcz remained in the lineup that recorded the first album. The musicians on that album were embarrassed by the improvisation, which Schwarcz wanted to explore further. He also sought to replace some of the band's acoustic sounds with electric. Although Warren decided to leave the band, he and Schwarcz remained good friends. Peter Billam and Harvey Troupe came to form a rhythm section, Billam also provided the lead guitar. The new lineup was completed with the arrival of the distinguished keyboardist Tim Rice (no connection to the writer of a theatrical performance of that name). This lineup recorded the first side of the album "Autumn Grass", released in 1971. Once again, the album consisted of one side of classic variations, plus rice and one side long suite. The composition "Autumn Grass" was written by the contemporary composer Patrie Standford especially for the group. Interestingly, it was actually recorded by the band's first cast before they split up, the album sleeve citing former band members as "guest musicians." In addition to the beautiful Schwartz improvisations, the piece stands out especially for its length. Over the course of more than 26 minutes, it is one of the longest (but by no means the longest) songs to appear on one side of the LP. This resulted in some compression of the recording being needed, a factor that will hopefully one day be solved by remastering the album for a CD. The band continued their tour after the release of "Autumn Grass", but ubiquitous musical differences emerged, and founder Schwarcz decided it was time to move on. The remaining members kept the band for several more months, but when it became clear that their efforts were in vain, they disbanded. Yoel Schwarcz became a session musician and sound engineer, touring with Henry Cow, among others. He had spells living and working in France and the UK that were involved in a diverse range of sound-related projects. He retired from this work in early 2006 and bought a small farm in the Loire Valley, where he is still active in the field of music and art. Schwarcz est retourn\u00e9 \u00e0 Londres tandis que Jan a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de rester \u00e0 Amsterdam, et peu de temps apr\u00e8s Schwarcz s\u2019est associ\u00e9 au guitariste classique John Warren. Ils ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de former un groupe pour d\u00e9velopper leurs id\u00e9es communes, et la formation a \u00e9t\u00e9 compl\u00e9t\u00e9e avec Mike Hart venant \u00e0 la contrebasse et Dick Wildman \u00e0 la batterie. Bien que le projet ait \u00e9t\u00e9 formalis\u00e9 au sein du groupe, Schwarcz \u00e9tait un leader de facto, et c\u2019\u00e9tait en grande partie son enfant. RCA a conclu un contrat avec Yoel Schwarcz (pas Continuum), et Continuum a sorti son premier album \u00e9ponyme en 1970. Face un des albums se composait de quatre improvisations sur la musique de Bach et Haendel. L\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00e9tait une longue suite en quatre parties compos\u00e9e par Richard Hartley et bas\u00e9e sur une \u0153uvre po\u00e9tique de Lord Byrona.Do en 1971, seul Schwarcz est rest\u00e9 dans la formation qui a enregistr\u00e9 le premier album. Les musiciens de cet album ont \u00e9t\u00e9 g\u00ean\u00e9s par l\u2019improvisation, que Schwarcz voulait explorer davantage. Il a \u00e9galement cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 remplacer certains des sons acoustiques du groupe par \u00e9lectrique. Bien que Warren ait d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de quitter le groupe, lui et Schwarcz sont rest\u00e9s de bons amis. Peter Billam et Harvey Troupe sont venus former une section rythmique, Billam a \u00e9galement fourni la guitare principale. La nouvelle formation a \u00e9t\u00e9 compl\u00e9t\u00e9e avec l\u2019arriv\u00e9e du clavi\u00e9riste distingu\u00e9 Tim Rice (aucun lien avec l\u2019auteur d\u2019une repr\u00e9sentation th\u00e9\u00e2trale de ce nom). Cette formation a enregistr\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re face de l\u2019album \u00ab\u00a0Autumn Grass\u00a0\u00bb, sorti en 1971. Encore une fois, l\u2019album se composait d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9 de variations classiques, plus de riz et un c\u00f4t\u00e9 longue suite. La composition \u00ab\u00a0Autumn Grass\u00a0\u00bb a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crite par le compositeur contemporain Patrie Standford sp\u00e9cialement pour le groupe. Fait int\u00e9ressant, il a en fait \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9 par la premi\u00e8re distribution du groupe avant qu\u2019ils ne se s\u00e9parent, la pochette de l\u2019album citant d\u2019anciens membres du groupe comme \u00ab\u00a0musiciens invit\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb. En plus des belles improvisations de Schwartz, la pi\u00e8ce se distingue surtout par sa longueur. Sur une p\u00e9riode de plus de 26 minutes, c\u2019est l\u2019une des chansons les plus longues (mais en aucun cas les plus longues) \u00e0 appara\u00eetre d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9 du LP. Cela a entra\u00een\u00e9 une certaine compression de l\u2019enregistrement \u00e9tant n\u00e9cessaire, un facteur qui, esp\u00e9rons-le, sera un jour r\u00e9solu en remasterisant l\u2019album pour un CD. (Leur premier album a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment remasteris\u00e9 et r\u00e9\u00e9dit\u00e9 en Allemagne).\r\nLe groupe a continu\u00e9 sa tourn\u00e9e apr\u00e8s la sortie de \u00ab\u00a0Autumn Grass\u00a0\u00bb, mais des diff\u00e9rences musicales omnipr\u00e9sentes ont \u00e9merg\u00e9, et le fondateur Schwarcz a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 qu\u2019il \u00e9tait temps de passer \u00e0 autre chose.
