In Rainbow's defense, when someone compliments you on literally everything you do, even insignificant things, it feels less genuine and more forced. To many, it also feels like pity rather than true support. It feels better to be congratulated rarely for things you worked hard to accomplish than to be congratulated constantly for accomplishments you know aren't special. It's like if you were being treated like a baby and being awarded gold star stickers for everything. The stickers lose their value the more they are given out, and in return, so does the support. Being an only child has a tendency to be humiliating in many ways. You don't get as much privacy, your accomplishments don't feel as special or valuable, and you have very few people to relate to as you grow up. There's always the pressure the child has being the only one to carry on their family. If you fail at life, than the parents will feel ashamed of themselves.
Now, I get that having no parents around is worse than being an only child, which was a good contrast in this episode to have. But I'm just getting at this;
They had good intentions and meant well, but were going about it the worst way possible. And yes, Rainbow shouldn't have been so harsh, but she did need to say something about it. And Scootaloo only felt the way she did because she doesn't understand how parents could still take a toll on their kids lives. It's like a kid viewing money as the answer to everything without understanding that adults are faced with taxes, bills, and financial risks.
I feel the moral of the episode is less rd bad over support ok and more yeah her parents over did it, but Rainbow should of talked with them at some point about the issue instead of dealing with it and basically bottling up her frustration with it for years on end. Overall yeah be unabashed, but if it gets to a point where its too much. Talk it out, don't hold it in. Bottling up emotion is such an important topic to be discussed.
I dislike Rainbow but in this episode I am totally on her side and besides parents never support their daughter if she wants to be a model, that's the first thing. Second thing I want to be loved and adored, treated like a princess. Princess Icy but still I don't know to take compliments for literally everything.
not sure if you guys gives a shit but if you're bored like me atm then you can stream all of the latest series on Instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my gf these days =)
I had to go between two households a lot growing up, one where I was treated kind of like RD, and one where if my existence was acknowledged at all I was treated like garbage. Honestly, I'd say that they were both about equally awful. So I've gotta say, I've always hated how RD is treated like she's terrible in this episode. Sure she could've done better, but being overly supportive can be just as damaging as being entirely unsupportive. I also don't like that it feels like RD's problems aren't being treated as valid just because someone else envies her situation. It pretty much turns things into a pissing contest of who's the biggest victim, which I think pretty much always does more harm than good.
Yeah that was my biggest gripe with this episode when it came out people were so quick to call rainbow dash a huge asshole for snapping but her parents were complimenting her so much on every little thing RD probably felt it was forced even if it wasn't. But at the end of the day everyone deserves parents like RD's I would swap mine for hers in a heartbeat.
I have a lazy eye which is what she has. The lazy one which is for me my left eye is essentially blind it can see it just doesn't which is why it's called lazy. To get my left eye to see I have to force it which basically means closing my right eye but that gives me a terrible headache. It can really mess with things like depth perception. I've subconsciously learned to work around it and am pretty good with being able to tell where big objects are but not small ones when they are moving so it's quite possible she was having trouble being able to tell where exactly some of the obstacles in the race were which probably slowed her down.
I know Scootaloo would love parents as attentive and encouraging as Rainbow's, but Rainbow was right to tell them to fuck off. They were way out of line, and it's apparent that Rainbow tried to talk with them about this in the past.
We all have embarrassing parents, but Bow and Windy... I would take the bus to school every day if I were their kid. Love them, but I can't handle all of... that, in public.
(3:51) And I thought the Apple Family was the only one to have freckles.
I like how the Wonderbolts take the presence and overly supportive personalities of RD’s parents in stride and just go with it altogether.
And some have been saying that Rainbow’s flashback scene makes no sense due to Spitfire, Soarin, and Lightning Dust not having met her yet those years ago. I say they serve more as stand-ins since RD likely can’t remember specifically who those fillies and colts were back then.
I wonder what would happen if we could check our past and look for people we met later. Could it be that we already met them before without knowing too? :J
A promising episode with a poor lesson imo. RD clearly tried to avoid her parents for a good chunk of her life, and we see how destructive and over the top they would get. They basically occupied so much of her personal life and put her on some big pedestal. Anyone who goes through that type of attention up until adult hood would surely feel pressured, overwhelmed, and want to have their own life without being interrupted and fawned over for every thing you do.
But instead, when RD finally snaps and tells her parents fair and square that they've been too much for her and that she didnt want them intruding on her Wonderbolt career, she gets guilt tripped for it and looked down on. Literally the only thing that made her start changing her mind was Scootaloo admmiting that she didnt have parents in her life to support her - but that also isnt a good route to go with because Scootaloo is a kid, and just because someone else is less fortunate than you are, it doesnt mean you arent allowed to have issues with your own family.
01:52 Almost got mowed by that clowdmower :q 02:15 It's good that no police pony were around :q 05:22 That ceiling looks so cool :> 05:55 Yup, it was destiny for Rainbow Dash to meet Tank ;) 09:33 Most likely from Featherweight ;) 17:47 Derpy being first :D There's also Lightning Dust on the second(?) place, and Spitfire is third(?) (though the podium is quite symmetric, so I guess there were some ex equo places?) 18:25 Yup, and the more crossed they got, the lower the place she took in the race. Poor Derpy... :/ 19:23 Yeah.... Interesting, eh? Many fans speculated that Scootaloo is an orphan, since they never showed her parents in any episode. And they took this scene as a confirmation of that. 19:40 Interestingly, the word "awesome" appears in this entire show less times than the word "magic" (I made some automated statistics a while ago based on official transcripts), and yet no one is complaining about the latter :J 22:12 Let her have that moment ;) She needs some encouragement.
20:50 - and way to go...you're the 50th blind commentator to make that joke :p But on the other hand, it means that you've watched and admired the show so much that it's memes are rubbing off on you. ^_^
Honestly, I despise this episode. Rainbow Dash was 100% in the right, and she should not have apologized for confronting her parents about their possessive, emotionally manipulative (16:16), and even downright dangerous (14:09) behavior. Rainbow’s parents were the only party at fault in this episode, end of story. Well, Scootaloo was also at fault, but to a lesser extent.
Being someone who understands what Scootaloo's gone through I can't understand her feelings. However it's because of that, that I cheer my younger family on so loudly. I want them to know how awesome and amazing they are. I want them to soar and hit the sky. Yeah I understand it can be a bit embarrassing, but it's because how much I want you to know how amazing you are. So, yeah. I relate both to RD's parents as well as Scoots'.
@@yallaintit It could also make accomplishments seem not special or genuine. I’ve been in RD’s situation but with friends instead of parents. It’s one thing to support someone and that person being embarrassed by it, but it’s another to suffocate someone with attention so much so that it isolates and humiliates them. That’s RD’s parents.
Rainbow Dash was in the right. I’m sorry, but if you are supporting her parents, you are either like her parents, not very educated with psychology, or you simply aren’t seeing the big picture. I’m not trying to insult anyone, but it’s true.
Her parents are overpraising her, it’s not bad to praise you kids, but it’s bad to OVERpraise them. It’s a VERY toxic parenting style, and some consider it to be abusive.
Overpraising is one of the main parenting styles that cause kids to be narcissistic, unprepared, and unhealthily competitive.
Praising a child for every little insignificant thing makes kids feel like they’re naturally the best at everything. And then they see other kids not getting that praise, so they think that they are better, leading to a rise in their ego.
And, by praising them for everything, they feel as if they don’t have to try at important things like getting good grades in school, etc. And when that day comes where the kid faces a problem they can’t solve, they FINALLY realize that they were never flawless and unstoppable, causing an immense amount of fear, they are unprepared because their parents’ overpraising never gave them the motivation to learn problem-solving skills (because they didn’t think they needed them, since they’re so perfect).
The only time that the child will try at things, will be when they want praise. They become competitive, so much so that it is unhealthy. They just want to keep getting congratulations.
Rainbow Dash: self-absorbed (I don’t need an example for that), unprepared when it comes to conflict (sonic rainboom episode), and she is unhealthily competitive (I don’t need examples).
The show showed the effects of overpraising, but not the toxicity of it. RD was right to have her outburst, maybe not the shouting (but the shouting is still understandable because it’s insanely frustrating), but everything she said was warranted.
Maybe the show was trying to go for “don’t hate the parents that loudly cheer on their kids during their soccer games” message, but Dash’s parents are way worse than that. They set off fireworks, said she was a great towel hanger, and installed a damn sound effect to her trophy room. They aren’t good parents.
Scootaloo’s reaction to seeing RD’s parents for the first time is the fandoms reaction in a nutshell.
