Baroque Nightmare (Evil Rarity's theme)

4 years since i found this and derped my comment. Remembered the name of the song at work today without remembering anything else and decided i would give it a listen again. Happy i did because i still love it.

That harpsichord... It's just too damned awesome.

Dark and classy. A perfect fit for lady Rarity's evil side~ ♥

I love how it starts off sounding classy, much like Rarity herself, then come the drums and the electric guitars of epicness!

Yes, when someone writes harpsichord tunes for the purpose of sounding "Gothic" they are usually channeling works from the Baroque era of classical music. I'd recommend Bach, he is the most famous (classical) composer in terms of contrapuntal writing. I did it wrong here, but you can benefit from anything he writes. I personally like his works in "The Art of Fugue" and the violin concerto in Am. As for more contemporary music, I'd have to strongly recommend Malice Mizer.

Love that part at 1:52, that repeats at the end too. Lovely.

My head just exploded from the awesomeness of baroque guitars. Those people, back then, knew how to kick musical ass. Back in the day, when military officers had swag.

the beginning of this kinda reminded me of Sevenfold's 'A little Piece of Heaven' not the instruments or sound, but the style in which the music flowed... excellent sound, by the way.

Before watching all of the episodes of FiM, I could see rarity being the snobby evil type character. Now it's just impossible for me, but well done! lol

this strangely reminds me of Dwarf Fortress. Imagine sitting on a throne completely encrusted in gems, surrounded by the skulls of the annual gobbo invaders, sending your danger-room trained legendary weapon trained squads (each a match for a whole army) out to deal with the "nuisance" that the elves/gobbos send you, in the forms of sieges. Oh, and if they do fail, use project "Final Solution" Pull a lever, floods the world with magma... Sea of Magma = no more siege...

Woah, now. To have your music compared to Castlevania's is a huge compliment. If you've never heard of or seen anything on Castlevania, I'd highly recommend checking it out. The only real similarities your song here has with Castlevania's, though, are as follows: A: It makes my ears happy, and B: You used organ, harpsichord, and rock guitars. Keep producin'; this is delightful. 
If you have any interest in Castlevania's music, check out Bloody Tears (the most popular by far), Sinking Old Sanctuary, House of Sacred Remains... honestly, you could probably just pick any OST from the series and it'll be wonderful. Symphony of the Night has fantastic 32-bit orchestral scores, and Lament of Innocence has some incredible, more recent sounding stuff, but they're all good.

Anyway, enjoy yourself, no matter what you do. That's the most important part o' life.

Actually, "Bedlam" comes from the Bethlem mental hospital in London. La Belle Dame Sans Merci is an 18th century ballad by John Keats, about a knight who gets enchanted by "a faery's child" and he falls madly in love with her, but then she puts him to sleep, runs off and he wakes up alone and heartbroken.

As I sit here listening to this, I can't help but think in my mind that this belongs in a Castlevania game. WHO HERE IS WITH ME!?!?!?

Still, this is totaly something one would see in the game's soundtrack, believe me.

There are parts in there which remind me more of Ultimecia and FFVIII more then Castlevaina. Also so could see Rarity as an evil empress of space and time...and jewels. But that's just me.

I forgot what soundfont I was using at this time. Although I wouldn't recommend it, it was really bass heavy and had a really strong "release click" sound on every note. Try "Campbell's Harpsichord." It's pretty legit.

I do see the symbolic relationship. La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a famous classic poem, the title (being that) translating (as it's French) into The Beautiful Woman without Mercy. Beldam sounds like a combination of Belle Dame, meaning beautiful woman. I don't know if that goes along with the "without mercy" part, but on the Wikipedia definition of Beldam, there's even a link to the page of the original poem, but it doesn't explain it. Apparently Beldam means hag or witch. So, iunno.

Baroque, definitely. The harpischord comes from France I think and the signature instrument of their medieval period was the Hurdy Gurdy.

Anyone else notice how the first few notes of the chorus resemble the Gravity Falls theme? It's interesting since this song came out well before that show premiered.

Castlevania's been out for thirty years. Not too sudden. I don't think it sounds similar to any of the soundtracks I remember from the game. A lot of people don't know much about baroque style music.

Tis from the comics. Acording to MLP Wiki: After the Nightmare Forces convince Rarity that while others might eventually abandon her for someone better and the Forces would always want her help, Rarity is manipulated into becoming their queen. In Issue 7, Nightmare Rarity speaks of Rarity as if they are two separate characters by saying Rarity was her specific choice as a vessel.

Basically, One of the comic covers showed up with a picture of Rarity as the new Nightmare Moon, complete with alicorn wings and armor. Other than that, I have no idea. As far as I know, no one yet knows why she was drawn as Nightmare Moon, or how she came to be that way, or if it was merely a hoax. I have also found pictures of her without the armor, declaring that the Elements of Harmony will be destroyed, and she will be the new queen. But like I said, I'm not certain on the subject.

That'd be nice, but way in first episode i think there is the explanation that the Elements can only be used to really bring harmony, use them to bring caos or any non-harmonic result would make them useless balls of stone to the next group of 6 to use... That's also why They didn't use it in most of the situations...

Both Guilty Gear and BlazBlue are fighting games (made by the same people I believe), and both have a wide range of different music.

I think it has something to do with the canceled MLP: Fighting is Magic game, not too sure though, or it's the fact Rare might make a good, or rather great Evil Queen of Equestria, like I said not too sure, but in any event, the evil side suits her greatly! Awesome song by the way!

Going by the standards told to us over generations, it appears that a good 50% of the male population is going to hell >_> me included. I really wrote that on the spur of the moment, but I really found Silent Ponyville to be unsettling. It's too accurate to Silent Hill for its own good; they nail down the childhood trauma perfectly. Even Cupcakes didn't affect me that much. But it really makes you question the morals of a person who wrote a very vivid story about murder, gore, sadism and trauma.

I'm thinking of number 2, particularly the Desert Riders level.

Okay, so Nightmare moon (Luna) was controlled by nightmares after her jealousy got the better of her, but now that Luna is back to normal, the nightmare have looked for another vessel and they found Rarity.

@psychgoth Just look up the music for comparison. Specifically the themes of Ky, Zappa, and probably the Assassin theme. It's a bit more rock heavy but they do like to mix it up at times.

@aangandtoph4ever Nope. Apart from instrument choices perhaps, this does not follow the Castlevania style that greatly. That aside, this is great in it's OWN right.

First thing I learned about them back in 07. The keyboards of the baroque period were not dynamic.

I'm being a horse nerd saying this; a horse's hindquarters are most often the focus of training, it's the horse's power engine and in fitness we always want to get the horse to use it efficiently to move and perform best, biomechanically. We all want a horse with a muscular flank, rather than muscle in the shoulders. So, um... it kind of is... a plot like you said... in the real horse world too xD

If only there was a more less-rock version of this! Don't get me wrong, it's awesome indefinitely and I love listening to it. XD But if the entire song was like all of the first twelve seconds of the song, it'd be a perfect soundtrack for Princess Platinum {not Rarity}.

This has most likely been answered, but what the hay. As I understand it, Nightmare Rarity is, of course, Rarity possessed by Nightmare, the being that possessed Luna, turning her into a more powerful version of herself, Nightmare Moon. Luna naturally translates to Moon, but Rarity does not, hence the name. Other than that, I am honestly totally lost on the subject.

Whatever you people gripe about, go ahead; somebody will listen. This particular composition is excellently crafted and a treat to listen to, and really...Castlevania? Somebody needs to get one of the new 32 bit games...

Rarity would propably make an excelent villian, she definetly seems to have the intelligence to be a great villian but she is a bit pompeous, if she could get over that then she would be a downright nasty villian, she also has proven to think of herself over others several times from what I know, so that only makes it more likely.

I do like Liberi Fatali, but it would be terribly cliche of me to leave it at that. I also like "The Extreme", "Force your Way", "Ride On", and of course "The Castle" lol. However if we're getting into games, I truly love the works of Grant Kirkhope, Masato Nakamura, and Yoko Shimamura. For their clever work in Banjo Kazooie, Sonic 2, and Street Fighter 2's music (respectively).

It's quite possible you could have heard the tune from the game at some point, and while you may not have been consciously aware of where you heard it, it ended up in here. It's not plagiarism tho. You're fine with using up to 10% of someone else's content I think. It's still a pretty wicked tune. I can see this working for a boss theme in a game where the boss is a high class aristocrat type.

Castlevania games've been around for quite a while, and their typical sound is baroque based around harpsichords organs and piano's with tones of rock/metal and electronic. I guess Rarity's not likely to become a villain (any more than any of them ever become, anyway -- none of them are always nice), but after "A Canterlot Wedding," I'm not sure where the creator's might take this show. That episode was pretty goddamn dark! "Hurricane Fluttershy" had a few rip-your-guts-out moments, too. When Fluttershy spun on Dashie, beyond tears, almost hysterical, I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach.

One of the great things about Rarity's character is that her behavior and mannerisms SCREAM the cliche Disney or animation "Female Villain" and yet she is a hero. MLP doesn't do what other shows try so hard to do: Destroy any sense of the superficial and its connection to the deep. Rarity can be self-obsessed about the most trivial things, and she applies them to her friends as well, but they all have a deeper meaning for her as they are allowed to have in real life.
