Gideon actually first appeared in the second episode on the newspaper Dipper was reading! The name in the quick narration was 'Carla' not Carl, sadly. If Gideon's dad also sounds familiar, he's been on Adventure Time, DuckTales, and Amphibia. The club where Dipper met Gideon is based off the show "Twin Peaks."
There were lots of theories going on during the show. Almost all of the mysteries will get answered sooner or later, so just be patient and keep theorizing.
