My mom likes to reorganize the living room a lot, and about eight or so months ago it was facing the window that faces the street. I had just pulled an all-nighter, and I took a nap on the couch. I woke up to a dark house, the only light coming from our porch light outside (the blinds were open) and that was the day I experienced the definition of uneasiness.

My favorite feeling tbh. Especially when the fan or air conditioner. It’s comforting.

What's better than that is the feeling when you have to stay after for sports, clubs, or makeup work. The halls are all empty save a few scant students doing the same and the teachers hosting these functions. Everything feels more free, more open, more exclusive, less formal, and without the pressure to appeal to the crowd since the bulk of your peers have gone home or the behavioral restrictions imposed by the usual school day. It almost feels like you could talk to and be friends with anyone, even someone you wouldn't talk to on a usual basis. Strange how the emptiness of the school at such an hour can, ironically, draw people together. Such a strange machination.

That happened to me once when I was the only one left in the classroom after school because I was trying to finish up something before going home. When I left the classroom and walked into the empty corridor, I kept thinking I heard footsteps behind me. It was like half a second delay after my own footsteps, and it stopped half a second whenever I stopped walking. It was probably just an echo, but child me was so terrified I just ran all the way down the corridor, down the stairs, and out of the school. Never stayed back late alone again.

Strangely, I have had many dreams where that always happens! I find myself walking through many unnecessary hallways that I would not normally go through, just to find another door to a different part of the school. And it always ends the same. I come home late around 7-8 pm.
