I remember the SYSTEM account trick in Windows XP. You could even access it during the initial setup by using the keyboard shortcut to access the Command Prompt. It sucks than newer versions of Windows greatly crippled the account to the point that you could not even open the File Explorer or Start Menu.
in newer versions of windows, you can (kinda) fix this by going to reg key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{CDCBCFCA-3CDC-436f-A4E2-0E02075250C2} and renaming the Runas key to _Runas
(you will need to take ownership and give full urself full perms to the key)
after running explorer on the login screen u can type explorer in again to open up file explorer (its pretty broken still tho) but the start menu still wont work.

You dont need a recovery disk, if you have acces to administrator privilegs. You just need to allow yourself to edit the file. You can do it via cmd, or explorer.

up until windows 7 it functioned like a normal user account. windows 8 marked the end :(
