If you can boot from an external drive then you don't have a bios password, so instead of booting into linux you could've just removed the windows password using the old Utilman.exe exploit.
If you do have a bios password it still doesn't protect your data as ur hard drive could just be removed and read externally.
So always have both a bios passwird as well as a windows one and an encrypted hard drive (preferably with bitlocker and using the tpm, as tpm ist safer than the software encryption variant) :)

Windows 10 doesn’t encrypt files by default, you need to activate BitLocker or any other program to encrypt your drive. You could only copy the files probably because the disk was mounted in a read-only state, probably due to NTFS cache from hibernation.

You have three option the first one is a virtual machine in which you can run Linux on windows. The next two are a live usb, and dual booting. There is an extra one but it is in beta it’s wsl2.
