In Gravity Falls, almost nothing is a one-off thing. All episodes tie into each other in some way. They either develop the plot or they're "filler" episodes that are still brought up either through mentioning the events of it or referencing it in the background.
And here it is. My favourite episode (aside from the finale). Of course the residents would notice. Of course there's a reason McGucket is utterly insane yet a genius at the same time.
Of course there's an illuminati society in Gravity Falls.
I alwyas thought of McGucket's glimpsed past as a metaphor for pain numbed through addiction, be it alchol or drugs. The downward slide, the 'Help me' message drawn on the wall, going from what was presumably his home, to a motel, to the dump. And it's only when he sees this forgotten past he begins to regain his mind. There are people who genuinely do need help in this way.
I have long loved this episode especially since it confirmed that my theory about Mc Gucket being the genius author who had gone crazy from something he messed with was at least partially correct!
Fun small fact. I have to be very careful not to give anything away. I already had to rewrite this. I believe this was made known through small details in this exact episode so I think it's safe to say.
Gravity Falls and Rick and Morty are kinda in the same universe. The Creators of both the shows are friends irl so it makes sense. I'll shut up now. I don't wanna spoil either show for you.
Man the mystery of the show just keeps getting crazier I’m sure we all thought that secret society was real there but apparently it was the town people so I guess they were fake secret society within looking at old man McGuckit memories apparently he created the Society & stan being the owner of the book I’m not quite sure there’s many more mysteries to unravel I’m sure but I think both Stan old man mcguckit have something to do with it
Fun fact: Before this episode aired, "someone" leaked an image of a younger McGucket writing the journal. Alex Hirsch took to Twitter in outrage.

I can imagine cloaked YouTube employees at YouTube headquarters chanting "into the hall of the forgotten" after deleting reaction videos.
