It's gonna suck for what feels like ages, but you will power through!! I think the worst part for me was being SO FUCKING EXHAUSTED and then out of nowhere my insomnia hit so it was like I had zero energy but all I wanted to do was sleep! I would stay away from milk if you can, at least for me milk would make my cough worse since it makes me all phlegmy. Also if you've got a fever, chewing/sucking on ice cubes helped me feel a bit less like I was dying lmao
omg i feel u dodie :( the first day of self isolation i was like "ok this isn't that bad i CAN deal with the pain so I'll just be bored". but two days later and the pain became unbearable, there was no time for playing lol. but i promise it does go away, eventually! you may be left with some after effects so be sure to come back to your doctor to find ways to strengthen your immune system. you can do this cutie, wish you well always 🥺💕

I was down gard for a week when I got COVID, and then another 2 weeks of slowly coming back to normal. But it varies by each person, and I don't have a great immune system. 😕 I hope you start feeling better soon ❤
Please, please rest as much as you possibly can, and afterwards as well. I have a post viral induced energy & immune disorder that was brought about by a chest infection and the main factor was that I didn’t take time to truly rest. I will regret that for the rest of my life. Long covid is no joke, rest rest rest
omg get well soon dodie 💕 if you have a big temperature and you are struggling you can have a damp towel and use it like a blanket, and then you have a fan on. my mum was sick and had a big fever in the middle of the summer and this helped her out a lot :)
cell biologist here: PCR amplifies the virus' genetic information. It's like a little photocopier for viral genetic material, so even if there's only a small amount of virus, the PCR detects it. no waiting for the virus to multiply or increase in the amount of virus itself, just kind of... makes it easier to see something that is hard to see. sorry you are unwell!! hope you feel better soon!

Btw, PCR has been used for maaany years (for example detecting ebola cases) and I have never heard this bs in those times. And you know what? I’ve also used this technique in a lab and... IT WORKS.

Except she wasn't fully vaccinated at all, especially if she's had AZ then protection is pretty low against Delta after only one dose. Of course people can still catch it when fully vaccinated but let's not overstate.
Just got my second dose 2 days ago, it's sad cause sometimes even if you want to get the vaccine, you have to wait for your turn (and also in my case I had to wait 56 days between both vaccines). :(
Especially important to let other people know as well, delta is the most dominant in the UK right now and the first vaccine dose is waaay less effective towards that variant

So did I, I was so excited to finally get vaccinated but we all learn the hard way 🥲 However, I believe that the vaccine has definitely made my symptoms less severe. I am very grateful to have an extra layer of protection even if I am not, in fact, immune 😂

This literally happened to me three weeks ago. I got my first vaccine 15-06, I tested positive on lateral flows 22-06. My PCR came back the next day as positive and I developed symptoms the evening before. I had the delta variant and it was horrendous. I was exhausted, the headache was splitting and debilitating, my eyes hurt to move. I lost all taste and smell, I had nausea and I fainted multiple times. I had to defer an exam at university because I was too sick to work. I’ve never been so ill in my life and it took the full ten days to feel ok again, and still my taste and smell aren’t 100% and I’m likely to have the chest cough for a few more weeks. Please please please keep testing and looking after yourselves no matter what the government is saying about opening up again. I’m a healthy 20 year old with no underlying conditions but COVID was truly debilitating and will affect me for a while to go. Stay safe everyone, and get well soon dodie, much love xo
Lateral flows are not shit guys , they are just less sensitive than PCR because in PCR even a tiny tiny amount of virus can be detected because the signal is amplified. it's just the same as pregnant test , if you tested negative but your period hasn't arrived you better take a blood test ;) get well soon dodie <3
this is why you MUST get a PCR test if you have covid symptoms.
if you do a lateral flow test whilst having covid symptoms, you are potentially risking SO MANY lives of those around you if the test gives a false negative.
as someone who works as a medical technologist in a covid testing lab, pcr tests basically take a mucosal sample (eg. from the back of your throat/nose)and then extract the viral rna from it and then put it through a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which multiplies the rna. from there, we can identify if there's any detection of COVID-19 genes in the huge amount of rna. for my lab, it takes typically about 6-8 hours to process but excludes the travel time it takes to get to the lab, the reporting, analysing etc. thus, it takes longer.

I think their idea was that you would still have some cases but they'd generally be mild and the healthcare system could handle it. Just means a lot of people hopefully self isolating...
It’s because now that the majority of people are vaccinated symptoms will be generally milder and hospital cases will drop massively which means that the NHS isn’t overwhelmed and is prepared for everything (theoretically). Thing is so many businesses are having to close because 90% of their staff are either isolating or have tested positive. One of them being myself, I got told to isolate for 8 days, went back to work for a week and then tested positive to had to isolate for another 11 days (my partner got it too). In that time 3 more members of staff tested positive and 2 more got told to isolate. But according to Bojo “the uk will just have to learn to live with Covid” honestly we’re basically talking genocide here
@Linny Crocus from what i understood on the video, she is vaccinated but only with the first dose, and such thought for some reason (probably misinformation sadly) that she was inmune to the virus already, but alas, she was not, and got covid. idk how the info is over there, but here in Chile we were told that with just the first dose of the vaccines that take 2 doses, if you get covid you could still get super sick before the waiting period after the second dose was over. Same for the single dose Cansino one (the one i got), they told me if i got sick before the 4 weeks it took to reach the inmunity, that i would get sick pretty much as if i never had gotten vaccinated... they might have been exaggerating, but better safe than sorry and i don't blame them at all.
The rationale is that in England by July 19th 2/3rds of adults will be double vaccinated and everybody who wants one will have had their first. So the link between positive cases and hospitalisations/deaths has been significantly weakened. On the latest data I read we are having 32x less deaths now then when we were last at this level of cases.
Of course this rationale breaks down when you consider that the people who aren't yet fully vaccinated for the most part are young people (who can't get their 2nd dose yet because their 1st dose rollout only started fully last month) who will be going out and working more in shops and hospitality.
i sort of know the answer to this! with the initial COVID virus and first variants, the vaccines were pretty dang effective even after 1 dose, so some governments, like the uk, decided to try to handle vaccination as getting everyone at least their first vaccine as fast as possible — which made sense initially. the issue is with some of the newer variants — while the full 2 shots still protect against them for now, just having had the first shot does not do as good of a job protecting you as it did with the original variants, thus putting a wrench in the uk’s plan! the podcast sawbones has an episode about covid variants that explains this better than i can from an actual doctor!
I am worried for everyone who gets the lurgy, but, quite selfishly, especially worried for you because your music means so much to me! I’m still waiting on my first one, it’s been four days despite me chasing up the results 🙃🙃🙃 I got a second one done yesterday so hopefully they’ll come through. I’m pretty sure that I have COVID, though, I can’t taste or smell anything 😂
Edit: the lines on lateral flows I did showed up as weak positives, but I did two more a couple of days later when I felt much worse and the positive lines were VERY noticeable 🤣

By the time she realised she had it it's likely she was already around them anyway. It's not stated anywhere in the video but it's possible they already have it and that could explain it. I guess it's up to her housemates if they're comfortable having her in shared spaces.
I genuinely wish you a quick recovery. I had gotten covid-19 a several months back and it was quite a challenge. I found that drinking fluids and a healthy sleep schedule makes it somewhat easier to deal with.
Hi dodie, sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I hope you feel better soon. I'm a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the US and I have actually worked with both of these tests before. Here are the different principles behind each test. A lateral flow immunoassay is a test that can detect the antibody count in your system. (Aka can see if you have a little army fighting against covid). You are right in saying that this is an inaccurate test as of right now. But that's why we do the PCR testing to confirm if it's a true positive. This takes a little piece of rna that can fit onto the covid rna strand specifically. This can be used to make multiple copies of the strand to where we have enough in order for our machines to detect the rna. There's a lot of steps I'm brushing over but that's the general idea of each test. Get well soon!

Take care of your voice. I lost my voice for 2 weeks after catching covid (on day 3). Everyone gets wildly different symptoms, but do hot water gargles/whatever the doctor tells you for your throat just in case. The 2 weeks without my singing voice in the middle of covid sucked really bad.

My own experience with COVID last fall was 1) a few days of sniffles - I thought allergies; 2) a 'head cold' - none of the trad symptoms, genuinely felt fine apart from stuffy and a headache; 3) ...uh oh :); 4) I feel like I'm dying. oh my god what if I actually die? ;;;;; that existentialism paired with already feeling poor was the roughest thing. I'm glad you've got people with you and an idea to keep your brain occupied, but absolutely give yourself grace if you keep feeling worse and not up for doing much at all. That is more the norm, I'm sorry to say, even in mild cases :( <3

I had covid in January (it really sucked) and I'm still dealing with the after effects now. I also got covid pretty late in the game, just take a bunch of Tylenol and sleep it off! Also don’t be surprised if ur reparatory symptoms show up super late that’s normal!

Oh no! My brother had covid and he just did ginger and turmeric shots ever day until he got his taste back. We tested his taste buds because we didn’t believe that he had it back. He did. It was hilarious. Also had some family friends who all got covid (their entire family), the ones who did the ginger and turmeric shots all got their taste back eventually. I’m self isolating at the moment. I was in contact with a friend and she tested positive the day after we met up. I took 5 test and they all came back negative but my mum said I should still isolate. Yesterday at midnight I put on a mask and just ran out into the road and screamed. Then calmly went inside again. Tomorrow is my last day of isolation.
Hope you get well quickly dodes! Since you already had one vaccine, I suspect it could be even worse without... Well, I guess this is one way of getting a second dose 😅 not the most pleasant one though...
Get well soon dodie! If you have a lung function machine (little contraption that you measure with by putting it on your finger) its good to check that as well while you have covid😊❤
i took the lateral flow tests i had at home too when i started feeling RUBBISH and it came back negative but then when i did the PCR test it (obviously) came back positive - i think you're right that the lateral flow ones are mainly for regular testing when you don't have any symptoms to make sure you're not asymptomatic and therefore make sure you're not spreading it around without knowing! my fever cleared up after about a week but still a bit of a chesty cough (roughly 2 weeks post positive result). after the fever cleared i felt nauseous for a few more days but then once i could eat properly again i was basically back to 100% health (apart from the cough, which the NHS told me could last a few weeks after recovering!). thankfully i kept my sense of taste and smell (my partner lost theirs though and we're still waiting for it to come back) - funnily enough i have a feeling i might have caught the virus the day before my first vaccine hahaha - hope you feel better soon!
I'm so sorry :(( I had it in may and turned 20 during my quarantine it was quite miserable at times but came out the other end okay and I'm sure you will too !

I relate so much. I have COVID right now and have felt the same about the other line that I’d never seen before. My parents have both been fully jabbed and I think I heard “COVID, double jabbed, I mean it is ridiculous” about 50 times. About to get out and I’m quite excited
I had covid in April of last year and it wrecked me. Had to go to the hospital because I was so dehydrated and couldn’t keep any food down for over 2 weeks. Dysautonomia got a thousand times worse. I hope you have an easier time with it and recover quickly!
we've only ever had the nose test things in the part of the U.S. I'm in, the kind that get processed in a lab for 3-5 days before you hear anything. When I saw her putting a swab in her mouth I got SO confused.

Just to say - if you have symptoms, TAKE A PCR TEST AND STAY AT HOME. do not take a lateral flow test! Why? Because lateral flow tests are less accurate & give false negatives and positives. You are required to have a negative PCR test to stop self isolating!
** edit: I am referring to the initial precautionary isolation. lots of people get symptoms and then take a lateral flow test and think "oh I don't have covid then", what they should be doing is taking a PCR test instead!
if you have already taken a PCR test & are positive for covid, you can stop isolating after 10-20 days depending on the severity of your illness. <3
Actually Having a negative pcr test isn’t a requirement because they can continue to show up positive up to three months after a positive test. As long as you’re improving and don’t have a fever you are no longer contagious after 10 days or 20 days If you are severely ill.

Oh okay !! I think a lateral test might just be a uk thing, I’ve never seen or heard of them in the us !! But that makes a lot of sense !! I learned the hard way that tests can keep showing up positive after no longer being contagious and I don’t want anyone to do the same and stress about it ! But the rapid tests aren’t very sensitive and can totally show false negatives !!

I had it last week, I’m fully fine now just can’t smell still. Lateral flows didn’t show up positive for any of my housemates even when they were in the midst of their symptoms, they’re shite. Hope you feel better soon
I had covid back in january and played the entirety of pokemon fire red again in my "free time", would recommend and also would recommend doing exercises to train your nose and tongue so you don't loose your senses cuz it's been 7 months and I still can't taste coffee properly and every type of meat tastes the same and also every chocolate tastes the same and every fried thing as well so yeah exercise your senses!!
did you get many symptoms after your first dose? just curious, I got really bad symptoms after my first but barely any after my 2nd, so I’m hoping I’m fairly protected (I got mine early because I’m autistic)

Hi Dodie, I used to work in Forensic DNA and in the same labs where a COVID PCR method were being developed. PCR (polymerase Chain reaction) is copy and paste for DNA and RNA. PCR tests are much more accurate due to this as even the tiniest amount of RNA can be replicated - unfortunately it’s expensive (the materials needed) but PCR doesn’t take very long at all, the whole test from swab to result in a lab setting only takes a couple of hours but is delayed by transportation etc. Fun fact - the UK has the fastest DNA processing in the whole world.
this is weird, i've experienced almost the exact same thing starting a couple days ago, got a 'cold' (none of the covid symptoms that are well known) and being the anxious person i am took like 3 lateral flows which were all negative. spent a day in bed, still felt like utter shite and went to get a PCR with my mum. turns out i did have corona and have now managed to wipe out my fully vaccinated mum too
I had to stay home for work for 14 days without pay (thanks America!) and it was probably the second most sick I've ever been. I thought about going to the hospital but I did a telehealth appointment and they mailed me a pulse oximeter and said don't come in unless you get above a certain temp or below a certain oxygen sat. I got close but after a week I started to get better on my own.
Im kinda jealous of them being able to chill together in quarantine... my flatmate was negative so we had to separate in the flat aka i was only in my room and wore a ffp2 mask around the rest of the flat... that was definitely lonelier...
PCR as a concept is multiplying some kind of genetic material to make it more visible, so you’re pretty much on the right track, but the scientists don’t wait for it to happen, PCR is basically adding series of chemicals to the samples and subjecting it heating/ cooling processes to speed up the growth big time so it happens in the space of 30mins to a few hours, not a whole day, hope that helped 😊
PCR tests can be run within just a couple of hours, but they do take more time than a lateral flow test (which is a screener and therefore does not pick up on low viral load, like you said) but since labs have been having to process SO many tests, that's why it can take days. If you were in A&E for example they would probably be able to test you and get results back within a couple hours.

I'm a biomed student but not an expert, but to put PCR as simply as I can: Trying to detect the virus is like trying to figure out if there's a needle in a genetic haystack. PCR takes the one shiny needle and turns it into a million shiny needles. Now it's much, much easier to figure out if there's a needle in the haystack.
I took a lateral flow test bc my brother had covid. came back negative. had to have a pcr test anyway bc I live with him and that was positive. did another lateral flow and the line was so so faint. my symptoms were so mild too so if it wasn't for my brother having it, I never would've known I had it and could've risked lives!
@D.M.S. i did have covid, i was in contact with 2 children who tested positive and i lost my sense of smell which i never have experienced before. I took 2 lateral flows and they said negative, so i took the one from NHS and got positive.
@the screen troll a question, they're asking if they took a PCR test. And they obviously didn't, lateral flows are known to not be 100% positive which is why if this person read the instructions they would see that it says "do not take this lateral flow test if you have covid symptoms" 😬

Same for me. I got fever, headaches, sore throat out of no where. Then a few days later lost my sense of smell and taste. Even holding an orange up to my nose did nothing. I did those nose swabs because we luckily got the free ones from our local govt. Came back negative.
Eventually I got better, and took a different kind of test (Idk what it’s called but they use spit) and it still came back negative.
I would have gotten the better tests if we could afford it, but yeah these were shit. For anyone out there feeling ill but tests come back negative, do everyone else a favor and self-isolate still!! We’ll get through this 🤞
@gabby vrielle Both the PCR and the blood tests have a time range in which they can identify the infection. PCR usually identifies it in the time range from 3-5 days from infection, while the blood (antibodies) ones do it from 5-10 days (IgM) and > 15 days (IgG). Those drugstores one simply aren't sensitive enough unless you have a really high viral load.

I am a bit concerned about how this video is not taking it very seriously. I guess in the UK getting Covid has become normal. And that's a terrifying reality. Because despite the fact it may be common to get it and not follow social distancing, it is dangerous and young people are certainly not invincible.
@Butterball2829 well no they’re right. Even after two doses the point of vaccines is to reduce the impact of symptoms and hopefully reduce the spread. It doesn’t mean you’ll be immune to it entirely but hopefully your immune system can cope better when it comes in contact with COVID.

as someone who works in a lft test centre, please please please get a pcr when you are showing symptoms as lfts are more for asymptomatic people to keep checking that you are safe before going out with friends, not to confirm if your symptoms are covid or not.

Biotech Engineer here: PCR can detect single molecules of DNA and RNA.
It's the same technology used at crime scenes. Essentially you copy molecules using the same system that's used when our cells grow and divide into new cells, but in a special heat cycling machine. Vaccines tend to reduce your immune system barriers for a while whilst your body processes which is why it's important to stay fairly isolated during and after all vaccines for a bit.

lateral flow tests are for if you are asymptomatic. If you have any symptoms you have to take a PCR. Not really sure why but yeah thats what doctors are saying!

The first vaccine should most likely give you a significant head start. Whether you get it or not is less significant than the immune response. Also you are youngish/seggsy so you'll be fine :)

What kind of vaccine did you get if you don't mind me asking? Was it a one dose? Was it Astrazeneca? This makes me question the point of vaccines if you still got it afterwards
pretty sure she only had 1 dose. And vaccines do work, but you can still get it. there is always a change. Just a lot less. Even for the delta versions your chance will be less.
She mentioned in the video that she'd had her first dose. Unfortunately not the second as in the UK her age group has only been offered the vaccine in the last few weeks

I'm pretty sure the entire flat has to isolate, and anyone who doesn't have a confirmed positive test has to wait two weeks from the date of their flatmate's positive result before heading back out. Can't remember what happens if someone else then tests positive though, sorry.

dodie. bestie. i had covid and the last thing you should be doing is filming or editing or anything like that. just sleep because you will probably be in a lot of pain and post-covid recovery is not quick and it makes you v tired so just sleep and eat and stay hydrated because it might be hard to do anything else for a few weeks
Being pregnant is not something to joke about. I have been on a waiting list with my wife for more than 18 months to start a treatment to get pregnant. The waiting list is now two years. So no, it’s definitely not funny to joke about being pregnant.

I think the worst part for me was being SO FUCKING EXHAUSTED and then out of nowhere my insomnia hit so it was like I had zero energy but all I wanted to do was sleep! I would stay away from milk if you can, at least for me milk would make my cough worse since it makes me all phlegmy. Also if you've got a fever, chewing/sucking on ice cubes helped me feel a bit less like I was dying lmao

0 likesif you have a big temperature and you are struggling you can have a damp towel and use it like a blanket, and then you have a fan on. my mum was sick and had a big fever in the middle of the summer and this helped her out a lot :)

My PCR came back the next day as positive and I developed symptoms the evening before. I had the delta variant and it was horrendous. I was exhausted, the headache was splitting and debilitating, my eyes hurt to move. I lost all taste and smell, I had nausea and I fainted multiple times. I had to defer an exam at university because I was too sick to work. I’ve never been so ill in my life and it took the full ten days to feel ok again, and still my taste and smell aren’t 100% and I’m likely to have the chest cough for a few more weeks. Please please please keep testing and looking after yourselves no matter what the government is saying about opening up again. I’m a healthy 20 year old with no underlying conditions but COVID was truly debilitating and will affect me for a while to go. Stay safe everyone, and get well soon dodie, much love xo

3 likesas someone who works as a medical technologist in a covid testing lab, pcr tests basically take a mucosal sample (eg. from the back of your throat/nose)and then extract the viral rna from it and then put it through a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which multiplies the rna. from there, we can identify if there's any detection of COVID-19 genes in the huge amount of rna. for my lab, it takes typically about 6-8 hours to process but excludes the travel time it takes to get to the lab, the reporting, analysing etc. thus, it takes longer.

24 likesIt’s because now that the majority of people are vaccinated symptoms will be generally milder and hospital cases will drop massively which means that the NHS isn’t overwhelmed and is prepared for everything (theoretically). Thing is so many businesses are having to close because 90% of their staff are either isolating or have tested positive. One of them being myself, I got told to isolate for 8 days, went back to work for a week and then tested positive to had to isolate for another 11 days (my partner got it too). In that time 3 more members of staff tested positive and 2 more got told to isolate. But according to Bojo “the uk will just have to learn to live with Covid” honestly we’re basically talking genocide here

0 likes@Linny Crocus from what i understood on the video, she is vaccinated but only with the first dose, and such thought for some reason (probably misinformation sadly) that she was inmune to the virus already, but alas, she was not, and got covid. idk how the info is over there, but here in Chile we were told that with just the first dose of the vaccines that take 2 doses, if you get covid you could still get super sick before the waiting period after the second dose was over. Same for the single dose Cansino one (the one i got), they told me if i got sick before the 4 weeks it took to reach the inmunity, that i would get sick pretty much as if i never had gotten vaccinated... they might have been exaggerating, but better safe than sorry and i don't blame them at all.

On the latest data I read we are having 32x less deaths now then when we were last at this level of cases.
Of course this rationale breaks down when you consider that the people who aren't yet fully vaccinated for the most part are young people (who can't get their 2nd dose yet because their 1st dose rollout only started fully last month) who will be going out and working more in shops and hospitality.
i sort of know the answer to this! with the initial COVID virus and first variants, the vaccines were pretty dang effective even after 1 dose, so some governments, like the uk, decided to try to handle vaccination as getting everyone at least their first vaccine as fast as possible — which made sense initially. the issue is with some of the newer variants — while the full 2 shots still protect against them for now, just having had the first shot does not do as good of a job protecting you as it did with the original variants, thus putting a wrench in the uk’s plan! the podcast sawbones has an episode about covid variants that explains this better than i can from an actual doctor!

By the time she realised she had it it's likely she was already around them anyway. It's not stated anywhere in the video but it's possible they already have it and that could explain it. I guess it's up to her housemates if they're comfortable having her in shared spaces.

7 likesHi dodie, sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I hope you feel better soon. I'm a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the US and I have actually worked with both of these tests before. Here are the different principles behind each test. A lateral flow immunoassay is a test that can detect the antibody count in your system. (Aka can see if you have a little army fighting against covid). You are right in saying that this is an inaccurate test as of right now. But that's why we do the PCR testing to confirm if it's a true positive. This takes a little piece of rna that can fit onto the covid rna strand specifically. This can be used to make multiple copies of the strand to where we have enough in order for our machines to detect the rna. There's a lot of steps I'm brushing over but that's the general idea of each test. Get well soon!

My own experience with COVID last fall was 1) a few days of sniffles - I thought allergies; 2) a 'head cold' - none of the trad symptoms, genuinely felt fine apart from stuffy and a headache; 3) ...uh oh :); 4) I feel like I'm dying. oh my god what if I actually die? ;;;;; that existentialism paired with already feeling poor was the roughest thing. I'm glad you've got people with you and an idea to keep your brain occupied, but absolutely give yourself grace if you keep feeling worse and not up for doing much at all. I took 5 test and they all came back negative but my mum said I should still isolate. Yesterday at midnight I put on a mask and just ran out into the road and screamed. Then calmly went inside again. Tomorrow is my last day of isolation.

0 likesi took the lateral flow tests i had at home too when i started feeling RUBBISH and it came back negative but then when i did the PCR test it (obviously) came back positive - i think you're right that the lateral flow ones are mainly for regular testing when you don't have any symptoms to make sure you're not asymptomatic and therefore make sure you're not spreading it around without knowing! my fever cleared up after about a week but still a bit of a chesty cough (roughly 2 weeks post positive result). after the fever cleared i felt nauseous for a few more days but then once i could eat properly again i was basically back to 100% health (apart from the cough, which the NHS told me could last a few weeks after recovering!). thankfully i kept my sense of taste and smell (my partner lost theirs though and we're still waiting for it to come back) - funnily enough i have a feeling i might have caught the virus the day before my first vaccine hahaha - hope you feel better soon!

7 likesWhy? Because lateral flow tests are less accurate & give false negatives and positives. You are required to have a negative PCR test to stop self isolating!
** edit: I am referring to the initial precautionary isolation. lots of people get symptoms and then take a lateral flow test and think "oh I don't have covid then", what they should be doing is taking a PCR test instead!
if you have already taken a PCR test & are positive for covid, you can stop isolating after 10-20 days depending on the severity of your illness. <3

Actually Having a negative pcr test isn’t a requirement because they can continue to show up positive up to three months after a positive test. As long as you’re improving and don’t have a fever you are no longer contagious after 10 days or 20 days If you are severely ill.

Oh okay !! I think a lateral test might just be a uk thing, I’ve never seen or heard of them in the us !! But that makes a lot of sense !! I learned the hard way that tests can keep showing up positive after no longer being contagious and I don’t want anyone to do the same and stress about it ! But the rapid tests aren’t very sensitive and can totally show false negatives !!

0 likesHi Dodie, I used to work in Forensic DNA and in the same labs where a COVID PCR method were being developed. PCR (polymerase Chain reaction) is copy and paste for DNA and RNA. PCR tests are much more accurate due to this as even the tiniest amount of RNA can be replicated - unfortunately it’s expensive (the materials needed) but PCR doesn’t take very long at all, the whole test from swab to result in a lab setting only takes a couple of hours but is delayed by transportation etc.

10 likesI had to stay home for work for 14 days without pay (thanks America!) and it was probably the second most sick I've ever been. I thought about going to the hospital but I did a telehealth appointment and they mailed me a pulse oximeter and said don't come in unless you get above a certain temp or below a certain oxygen sat. I got close but after a week I started to get better on my own.

0 likesPCR as a concept is multiplying some kind of genetic material to make it more visible, so you’re pretty much on the right track, but the scientists don’t wait for it to happen, PCR is basically adding series of chemicals to the samples and subjecting it heating/ cooling processes to speed up the growth big time so it happens in the space of 30mins to a few hours, not a whole day, hope that helped 😊

1 likePCR tests can be run within just a couple of hours, but they do take more time than a lateral flow test (which is a screener and therefore does not pick up on low viral load, like you said) but since labs have been having to process SO many tests, that's why it can take days. If you were in A&E for example they would probably be able to test you and get results back within a couple hours.

11 likesSame for me. I got fever, headaches, sore throat out of no where. Then a few days later lost my sense of smell and taste. Even holding an orange up to my nose did nothing. I did those nose swabs because we luckily got the free ones from our local govt. Came back negative.

I would have gotten the better tests if we could afford it, but yeah these were shit. For anyone out there feeling ill but tests come back negative, do everyone else a favor and self-isolate still!! We’ll get through this 🤞

0 likes@gabby vrielle Both the PCR and the blood tests have a time range in which they can identify the infection. PCR usually identifies it in the time range from 3-5 days from infection, while the blood (antibodies) ones do it from 5-10 days (IgM) and > 15 days (IgG). Those drugstores one simply aren't sensitive enough unless you have a really high viral load.

Please no one do that "trick" its just irritating your nasal passages, nothing more than that. No better than scraping your knee on purpose so plasma comes out and than calling it "cleansing" 🤦♀️ If you really want to clear out your nasal passages you can get a sinus rinse from the drug store.

3 likes@Butterball2829 well no they’re right. Even after two doses the point of vaccines is to reduce the impact of symptoms and hopefully reduce the spread. It doesn’t mean you’ll be immune to it entirely but hopefully your immune system can cope better when it comes in contact with COVID.

pretty sure she only had 1 dose. And vaccines do work, but you can still get it. there is always a change. Just a lot less. Even for the delta versions your chance will be less.
