@Jack Headroom That reminds me of a band that use to be on Myspace called Nintendoom and they actually played heavy metal versions of the original nintendo music such as Metroid and they were awesome. Can't find any info on the band now though.
@anonymousprofess I think Mario 3 might not run well right now do the the MMC3 chip but will still need do some digging into the firmware and emulator used to see what’s possible. But would be possible to get all the roms within reason
I kinda have a feeling they will be making other versions. I hoping for a Zelda with maybe 2 also in it. Also looking toward to see whatever they release if they do. We can easily swap the rom it’s a very easy chip to remove for a larger one. And data is very easy to find on the chips as they are public knowledge.
I’ll looking it to adding usb support which will lead to SD storage.
Amazing you could cut it down enough to fit in that amount of RAM. Quite surprising they put so little headroom in those devices when RAM and flash are pennies in cost difference. Can't fathom why they restricted it so severely. Where is the upside?
cellphones aren't much bigger and they have 12gb of ram in some cases. Would be nice if they could put half that in a small handheld like this. lol Would kinda defeat the purpose then I guess.
@Tiporari over a few million units you can really have some serious coin by only buying the smallest amount of memory needed. Engineer probably built it bigger and his boss made him cut it down till it got to “x” size / “x” cost. Trust me I’ve been in rapid prototyping it happens in all projects it’s just part of the overhead. Plus I believe we might see other version. If they already have a working emu for that chip it would be cake to swap I any rom they wanted. Wash and replete $$
@Larry and Larry.. I totally missed this comment, but thanks for letting me know that all capable phones cost $500 and up.. my god, what ever are budget phone users going to do with these types of costs.. 🤨
@TheLadsBand4ever Once the community hacks this so it runs all the G&W games then I'll buy one. I don't really care for a tiny portable super mario, but those old G&W games were a major time sink in my youth
If there is any electronics device with a screen and buttons that cannot run Doom, then the Doom Slayer will jump out of that device and cursing that it cannot run Doom.
@Sinistar tyrannosaurus tex only has wolfenstein 3d style graphics meaning that the only way you could pull off doom in that style is if you port one of the ti 80 series calculator ports. either way it wouldnt be "real" doom
@Zack Merritt there’s really no need for him to do a tear down . It’s very simply soc with factory spec sheets on the manufacturers website that’s both the chip and memory other than that there’s not anything else to the device other than few buttons, battery pack a lightning power only charging port in an LCD display. The chip memory are very well documented and easy to work akrh within reason.
The great thing is, even secret government agencies are full of geeks. We have infiltrated every part of society. If you want Doom running on something, just ask :)
@T.h. Claus 280 MHz ARM Cortex-M7 with 1.4 Mb RAM. That's a lot. Enough for any NES/SNES/GBC or GBA game (no 3D though - MCU doesn't have accelerator for that).
@First name Last Name Stacksmashing addressed this in his first video, stating that the USB-C port‘s datapins are unfortunately NOT connected. Only power. :(
@weaknespase Point taken. With no USB-C datapins connected this still leaves us with no storage to put them on. I‘m not an expert, but that could be solved by a hardware mod, right?
@T.h. Claus since this involves directly opening the system then yes you could do a hardware mode if you replace the flash memory with another 8 pin or 6 chip (whichever the handheld uses) with more storage
@Dancin Forever A classmate in elementary school had one and I even loved just watching the time mode. The thing was magical at the time. Much later on I got my own one and the gameplay still holds up.
@T.h. Claus Hardware and software mod. I don't think Nintendo engineers added USB support to the firmware. Routing it to onboard USB-C socket might be a little hard due to small contact pitch.
We can also change onboard SPI flash IC for some other model with larger capacity - even 2 Gbit models exist - to give enough storage for roms.
Or even route SD card (MCU supports SDIO) slot, if some spare pins left.
The ONLY reason I bought the "Game & Watch Gallery" collections on the GB and NDS all those years ago. I didn't like the "modern" adaptation, kept in the original LCD as it's much better. Donkey Kong Jr. FTW!!!!
I would be happy if we could remove everything from the game and watch and load in all the old game and watch games, making it an all in one for game and watch fans 👌
subscribed! thank you so much for your hard work and sharing this! please continue to push the g&w hacking scene further! I am looking forward to the future of the g&w
Blown away by the effort you put in!! I played the original floppy disk version many years ago at midnight in a chicken hut at full volume! What a time.
Keep in mind, Doom required a mininum of 4MB of RAM to run back in the days (and at a very least a 386DX). This is pretty impressive for a really early alpha version of it. Wow, simply wow!
Increasing the eeprom should be pretty easy. But working with the hardware inside the device is much better since most people are not going to solder their systems. Even at currently it's pretty big ask for most people to connect two external programmers. It's just expensive for most people.
This is incredible stuff! If you could find a way to put all the original single screen G&W games on this thing, that would be the prayer answered for many🤞🏼
Oh good, this means we could put some actual (custom made) Game n Watch games on the Game n Watch... you know, the one thing that Nintendo somehow failed miserably at?
very cool! I like how you optimize the code for this week hardware ,just like back i a good old days , when programmers were like magicians :) And it is funny that in modern days we have that kind of dedicated slow hardware :)
I agree, back in the days programming was all about tricks for saving ran and faster functions. There are still people producing demo and games for the c64 and if you can make it run stuff there then on this a lot will be possible. Let's wait to see if anything will be available for general public, then lot of people will start playing with it. If someway the USB C can became accessible with a custom firmware it will be already a lot, but I did not understand if at least the hw connection are there of completely missing.
You’re doing god’s work right here. I would have though that the next logical step would be to check if you can dump and run other NES roms on the already provided emulator, but it may be more complicated than that. And also if the same thing can be done for Game and Watch titles, would love to mod this thing in such a way.
Amazing work in so little time! You should get a Nintendo sponsorship, sales will go through the roof now that's proven it's hackable! I know I'm considering buying one now!
the old game and watch games running on the new game and watch, being able to switch top and bottom screens with a press of a button or something perhaps.. that would be cool
I love the homebrew/hacker community. It's like the lockpicking lawyer for electronic devices. Oh, you have encrypted firmware? Would be a shame if it were to be H A C K E D
Congrats on the progress, it would be great to have all GW games dumped into it, perhaps cut off one of the mario games, if no space is available. I just wonder if it ever becomes user serviceable change of roms.
It is awesome work you did there. If I only could request something it would be possibility to put additional memory fort his device and a way to load any nes rom. It would be great. Anyway I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your project.
What would be nice if they come up with a replacement board, is if the charge port can also be used to upload new games. That way there's no need for a micro SD card slot and you also don't have to cutup the casing to add one or hopefully not have to put on a replacement back cover.
Fantastic job guys! Also, if I understand correctly, this device should run generally all 1MB NES games without any game code modifications, right? Another thing, would it be easy to swap memory chip for larger one (and use it)? Oh, and when are you going to implement ray tracing? ;-)
I think, it should be possible to make a hardware modification, solder USB lines to the MCU pins and add a few resistors. With that being done, you can write custom bootloader via vcom, or even implement a mass storage device feature if there is enough memory for that. Thank you, that was interesting.
Holy crap! This is awesome! You should try to make your next thumbnail that hints at the device hardware. In the back of my mind I thought this would be another cob blob based device, and put off watching. This is tingling my current micropython possibilities interests. Also, that spi flash size is ridiculous! It's the only reason I haven't dropped everything to order one of these. If the penny pinchers had taken a bathroom break while a $0.25 bump in the BOM were added for a W25Q256 at 32MBytes, my sales conversion would be much easier. Heck, just add a dual footprint...and breakout the FSMC while your at it :-) Awesome project. Thanks for the upload. -Jake
I don’t understand 1% of what you do. This is good, as to me it seems like true magic. Keep magicking. The simple fact that doom can be held within 250k is amazing, and seeing it run like this is super cool.
Way to go man! I mean good job you two! I have a little game and watch review that I did I'm going to copy The link to this video and put it in the description. I think everybody needs to see this =}
Hello, you should consider putting a bigger flash memory, there are some bigger available with the same form factor ! Great job BTW, it will be great to have some other games playble on this game & watch !
Ahh, it soothes me to know people have the perseverance and skill still to do these things in a time of oppressive silicon valley giants wanting to for evermore clamp down on various laws putting a strangle hold over what you are allowed to do with things you own and bought with your money you've made.
Awesome work! I feel like you didn't quite finish the story, given there was essentially no textures by the end, but in the intro and outro you have sprites for enemies? Can't wait for the next episode :-)
I really hope they figure out something they can sell like a replacement board or something that the user can easily swap in and have a removable micro SD card. Where you can play emulated games on this like the MAME emulated versions of the original Game & Watch games. I wasn't initially going to buy this as I don't have a need for a portable SMB 1 and 2 device, but I'll probably go ahead and pick one up to keep to hack it in the future. As it looks like there are enough dedicated people on this to create something that the user can install or at least modify easily.
Damn. Nintendo designed this device basically to only run and store one rom. It would be difficult to add extra storage by soldering-- that would basically lock out the average end user
The debugger boxes look complex and expensive. I have an old r-pi with a gpio extension board so I will try to flash something using it. Is it possible to use r-pi as a debugger as well?
Out of curiosity would there be a way to connect a usb drive or something like that to the usb-c and run games from there? It would stop the storage issues (well other than ram) and if it really works you could save your game and watch from being wiped everytime you change games
Hopes it helps, there's 32MB SPI flash roms available, usually with the model number: 25Q256. Though, I'd have to ask, Can the STM32 variant in the Nintendo Game and Watch address 8/16/32MB SPI ROMs?
Doesen't Chocolate Doom uses quite a bit of "overhead" to ensure 100% authenticity (including upscaling image to 1600x1200 with NN then downscaling it with linear to target resolution to ensure crisp pixels without crawl), making it run slower on low-end hardware than other "simple" ports? IMO trying to port Boom source instead couldve provided better performance.
@J B gameboy n game boy colour only had 2 buttons d-pad start n select, the sega master system only had d-pad n 2 buttons and i think the pc engine/tg-16 was the same. theres a few low power systems we could get away with button wise anyway fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Then you sir have never order a BOM for a few millions units. It’s a huge difference in production. I’m sure a engineer build it with bigger first and then his boss made him get it to the smallest size possible to prevent loading more games and save X amount of money.
I'm gonna eat my words. In the previous video I said that " The super mario bros game & watch will be the first console that came after the SNES that will never run Doom " and now this guy uploaded a video titled Doom on the super mario bros game & watch damn it.
@l3rvn0 hack the game so that you can do spin jump with down button mid-air like mario land 2, I believe that someone has already done that. but I believe you can beat the game without spin jumping ever, outside of few bonus areas and one of the star road levels.
How about a more classic approach of a Game Boy Advance Classic to cover the Game Boy, Color and Advance libraries while supporting Super Mario All-Stars more properly?
@l3rvn0 The device actually has 5 face buttons (along with the 4 d-pad buttons).
Or, since the guy above appears to want Nintendo to make the All-star version, they could just add an extra button near A and B, or add a shoulder button ala the GBA.
AWESOME SUPER COOL! (The FPS is totally OK, but what I really would love to see is just a little bit of some music, maybe in low-res, like the SNES DOOM OST?..)
@Blurigard with the typical rom size that would be enough for many nes games but if its as simple as taking the rom chip flashing it and soldering it , it would be a miracle before Christmas
@STAR1035 It's an SPI ROM, so accessing more storage does not require any more pins, so I'd be confident that a substitution of a higher capacity chip from the same range would be entirely feasible. Once the authors publish their how-to and cracking tools, I could see this being a common mod.
I posted on the twitter thread: there is a 128mbit chip which is pin compatible with exactly the same package; but it would be nice to find a larger option
How TF is this thing being able to be modded?! It's quite incredible. Course i'm probably lacking context from not watching the video showed in the begining, but I guess that's the norm now for pretty much almost any electronics.
I have never done hardware modifications. How do i get started with it? Which device did u use to connect the game and watch to ur pc and transfer data? I love this content btw 👍👍keep it going!!
@Clipper YT it can't because first of all minecraft is closed source, second of all i doubt the game and watch will be able to run JVM, and it will need a lot of ram, doom is optimized for old hardware and minecraft isn't
@ishdx maybe create a remake many people have unofficially ported MC to other devices like the GBA, the NDS, etc. Heck, I think someone's trying to port it to the SNES.
@Clipper YT The problem with Bedrock edition: optimized for taking advantage of PC hardware better, but it's closed source and takes advantage of a CPU and GPU, not of a Microcontroller with no video engine.
@Clipper YT did you see what he had to do to doom to make it work? you are asking for too much. there isn't enough room in the ram to store everything you need to make the game playable
@ishdx it being jvm would actually make it easier to get something closed source running, you'd just need to implement your own jvm. i doubt it would run all that well tho lol...
@ishdx and lwjgl shouldn't be too bad, you could mesa for the opengl implementation but if there's any closed source native libraries used in it that could pose an issue.
@TheAwesome98 No, it's closed source. The control flow, variables, functions, etc. are readily reconstructed via decompilation of the bytecode but it is still closed source. It is also obfuscated.
Minecraft takes dozens of megabytes just to keep track of all the blocks in your immediate vicinity. With only 1.3MB to work with, you can't keep track of very much world.
Extremely early versions of Minecraft were just a very small, finite world with completely random blocks and nothing more than the ability to fly around remove and place blocks at will. That version might be playable on the G&W. But that's about it. There would only be a small handful of blocks to pick from. None of them would do anything. There would be no mobs. No crafting. No survival. Literally nothing except a small lego-esque canvas.
@ishdx minecraft has a program called mod coder pack which allows users to modify the source code, to create mods, its official too but it looks like it was killed off.
@Clipper YT c, it's lagging already on a raycaster, a very primitive type of 3d graphics. doom is basically a 2d level being rendered into 3d space. now imagine coding a open gl interpreter on this thing. even if that fits into the storage, the game and watch processor would never be able to run this with less than one yps (years per second)
I don't know if they are doing this or not, but I wouldn't mind if they were also able to find a small speaker that will replace the OEM speaker that is a higher quality speaker. Maybe even one that does stereo or something. Though I don't even know if something like that exists already for the consumer market.
I wonder if it could run Super Mario World. It's only 512 KiB. No clue how big a SNES emulator would be though, or if the hardware is powerful enough to run one. Could be that the emulator can't fit even if the ROM can.
would be nice to hardware mod this to make like a device that can be pair with a phone or something to see notifications or notes and stuff idk or a tamagochi like hombrew would be nice
Someone would need to replicate the foils of the original games (they just printed foils for the scenery instead of actual graphics) or port the few existing "ports" for the PC on there.
I wonder if theres a way to make the doom game to look like nes game? look up "Doom Mod Salad - Only on the NES!" maybe making a custom doom game to look and sound like the Nes might help.
Ok, let's make this even more challenge... take those early 80's Game and Watch devices and port Doom to them... :) (those devices didn't even have pixels)
Since theres an arm chip in it, that means it’s 32bit because every arm chip is at minimum 32bit, but if ram became an issue, well mmmm because the gba has also limited rom & availible ram, BTW The last device I want to see doom running on is a gameboy/color!!!
Good job lads! It needs hardmodded now with an SD card to load custom games :D

@stacksmashing Is the SDMMC host controller for the STM32H7 a separate chip or part of the SoC package? and if it's separate is it already on the Game & Watch board?
If PS1 could play Quake 2, and this G&W contraption has similar specs to PS1 or better, than maybe it could run Quake2 also using some external storage? Doom 1 & 2 were made for GBA with smaller levels and lower resolution, but it was really playable. Nice job guys, cheers!
Hi :) You really should try doom ports to stm32 F7-CPU´s (maybe this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLcnNJVRS5A and https://github.com/Julioyevenes/doom_f7/tree/master/src) for the lack of memory you could find unused pins of the cpu and solder some wires to a sd-card slot (prefer sdio. spi is much slower...). Just beware: the f769 disco - board used in the videolink above is using a display connected via DSI... F7 and H7 CPU´s have far more advanced capabilities than F4´s (I- and D-Cache and so on), so you really should use them with the provided H7B8 CPU ;)
What are the specs of this device? Initially I thought the old nintendo game&watch (which wouldn't even make sense or impossible) but it's a rebranded game&watch with ARM @280mhz. That's like a gamepark GP2X which of course ran Doom very fast. Only the memory is a challenge. So, my question is why is it so slow? Am I missing something about the other specs of this hardware besides the memory?
I just wish Nintendo would release a patch of some sort to add the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch game. (Not the NES one, the Game & Watch one.) It would've been a much better fit for this G&W than a Ball version with a Mario head, for which the controls are wrong.
Yup, the size is EXACTLY what I said would make this a real challenge to put on this device due to the very limited flash RAM & that it's size would have to somehow be drastically reduced, and some idiots that didn't know what they were talking about tried to say I was full of it. Yeah, that's what I thought.
But why would you not buy 128Mbit flash chip (e.g. MX25U12835F costs $2.27 on Digikey) and replace the 1 megabyte chip? Would not that solve the storage issue?
Seeing doom on things like this and pregnancy tests are just plain fun. But i don't get why you would use the game and watch as a machine for homebrew? There should be so many more better options with portable consoles that has more powerful machines and better ergonomic?
So why not swap the SPI to a 256Mb version, and also add onto memory using a 4Mb SRAM SPI (and use CE1 of the ST32)? That would probably allow a much better port to run.
hats off to you and your chums! i honestly would not know where to begin 🤘🤘🤘🤘 truly truly impressive work ^_^ delicious! 😋😋😄 i cant wait to play metroid and castlevania on that thing or in time maybe some pc engine shooters... or master system titles. if doom can run on it anything is possible ^^ the future is bright in regurgitated joycon land 😄😄😄😀💪💪💪🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍👍 such a shame about the lack of internal memory, i have my fingers crossed theres some devious soldering internal sd card type solution down the line to make this little beast even more meaty ^^ i am most excited and intrigued about your future works on the game and watch👍👍
I'm still just wanting to add the original Super Mario Bros G&W and I'll be satisfied lol. Hopefully this is a step closer to that being a possibility.
But the question is....it worths the hard work? This process is not avalaible for the general crowd, requires solid skills and knowledge. I was hoping to make as simple as insert an usb with software. Seems never will be that easy due the usb port its only meant for charge purposes.
great work with this! so explain like im 5 .. is the loading of roms and code avail without hardward modification now/ever? or is that further down the line? SMB2 on this is my end goal since i saw the first vid. good luck!
I know "Doom runs on literally everything" is a meme thing, but I honestly always much preferred Wolfenstein 3D, and it never gets any love. Am I the only one? :/
Because it was inevitable. I think I made a joke about this when it was announced. But it really wasn't a joke because this is the least shocking thing I could have imagined happening to this.
This means the original game boy was always hackable right ? Cause it had some similarities. Like tiny screen. Terrible memory. Ect. If only I had my original game boy again. With the accessories.
What CPU is in the G&W? I'm surprised that the classic software renderer would run so slowly on it, or that texturing would make such a large difference, especially since Doom ran really well on a 486/33 back in the day and that had very little memory bandwidth.
It’s mainly where code and data reside. As some of it is in the external flash the access are really slow. Need to do some profiling and then it will run great
@RWL2012 Ah, so yeah it's definitely a bandwidth limitation and not a compute speed limitation. Needing to turn off textures in that context makes perfect sense, although I'm surprised that even doing flat-filling is going so slowly.
Doom has a powerfull cache system but it wasn't designed for extremely slow storage, you might have to preload the most important assets at level startup
I only know of one, but it uses a special chip inside the cartridge. That chip wouldn't be emulated in an NES emulator, so it wouldn't be usable.
(specifically, it uses a Raspberry Pi inside that cartridge. It still runs on the NES, but the Rpi does the actual computational work, with the NES mostly just handling output and controls.)
Look what you have started with these comments. For 99% of people with one of these there will never be homebrew. I don't think they realise the work involved just to get something on the device. Good work anyway guys, impressive.
I have very little clue about a lot of the aspects of getting doom to run on this cheap smartwatch i have, but god damn, I really want to run doom on it. I have some ttl programming modules, lots of tea, and a shit ton of breadboards.
You said you will go into more detailed on how you reversed engineered the Game and Watch. Since this channel started as a Ghidra tutorial, could you please make a step-by-step tutorial on how to reverse engineer it using Ghidra?
You got it working on the Game & Watch... could you get DOOM on the NES?... (No RaspPie cheating) Edit: It's not really playing on the NES if it's just outputting video from your Raspberry PI like everyone else has done
"[...] and just fixed whatever compilation issues came up." Talk about an understatement xD (Okay, I'm not personally involved in the project so maybe it really was that easy, but I can count the number of times I "just" fixed a compiler error on one hand)
Congratulations! Imho such tiny lcd is best suited for 2D games. You wouldn't like to play fast shooting game after 10 hours of job. Some small groovy code for having quality time would be perffecto. Maybe .gif player/pic/anim viewer for start ? "Pixel art viewer?" All best
Not to be "that guy," but the Doom 1 WAD is actually about 10.6 MB, not 4. 4 MB is for the (freely distributable) Shareware version, which only contains the first episode (and so is missing anything that'd be in Episodes 2 or 3).
There's also a version of Doom called "Ultimate Doom" and that adds a fourth episode. That version of the WAD is 11.8 MB.
Lastly, there's also the Final Doom WADs, TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiement, which are 17.3 MB and 16.6 MB respectively.
So you'd need at least 24-32 MB of storage to be able to support all the main Doom games. 16 MB will support Doom/Ultimate Doom/Doom II, but neither Final Doom episode.
There's some others that run on the engine as well of course - Heretic, Hexen, etc. - but that's beyond the scope of running Doom, so much as "running on the Doom engine," and none of this counts things like the user-made PWADs that would have to be loaded in addition to the main game WADs, called IWADs in the community.
In short, once the performance issues are improved, storage will become your main limit. Hopefully you guys can figure out some sort of way to add external storage like a MicroSD slot or something. :)
Hmm the DOOM1 WAD I have and that is linked here is 4MB, what are the differences there? I’m not a doom expert 😀 https://doomwiki.org/wiki/DOOM1.WAD - also see the latest video, we now have 16MB of storage :)
It would be awesome if u put MICRO MAGES on that device. Its an indie NES game that recently release on 2019, please try it instead forcing the doom like that
The real question is, can it play Crysis? To be honest if it can play mario bros, SMB2US, SMB3 and vs. SMB i will be very happy... im suprised Nintendo has not pulled their c & d bullshit.
I modified the clock directly in the C code, not in the IOC, so I think it should be running at 280MHz - but definitely possible (and likely) that I messed something up 😀
Wait a minute, the Doom you show at 5:23 is NOT the Doom you show at 5:33. So to be clear, the Doom you got running is the one shown at 5:23 not 5:33, right?
Cool. Now put something useful on it like Donkey Kong. Somthing playable

What about Game and Watch games? Like Ball, Flagman, Vermin, Octopus, Manhole, Judge ect ect! Call me nuts but how awesome would this device be if you could play all original single screen Game and Watch games!! I mean It is a Game and Watch after all..................
just put the G&W emulator onto this device with all G&W games. Image playing donkey kong jr or Mario Cement factory on it :-) I think G&W games will suit this screen much better. SMB is too tiny, sprites are almost not visible on this small screen. Bigger sprites like G&W games would be better visible on this small screen.
Someone should make a computer software that u can just plug in any device to and then u can buy hacks and hack it. If anyone steals my idea just @ me but idrc if u steal it

I don't get why it's got the specs of a 1990 PC. It literally costs pennies to get even 50mb Ram on board now. Even if it's only meant for basic games.
hey a lot people need someone to come with a way to make dsi japanese handheld to work here in US can you reprogram or find the way to bypass the region lock ?
He did inject a different ROM in his previous video. The issue is that apparently Nintendo does some additional, on-the-fly patching of the ROM, so you would need to make that doesn't mess up the game.
Now that he has access to the firmware, he could disable the on-the-fly patching, so I'd expect it to work. The only issue would be if the NES emulator isn't accurate. But I doubt that Nintendo would write a new one just for this device, so it probably is accurate.
Brrrrrrrruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh how is that possible? Like bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Very impressive, but I have no idea why all source is single commit. There is no way to watch each of the tiny changes you made, which is a shame. Not that I'm going to buy one of these things to hack, but just to have a record of the process.
Dude, it was a joke, a meme. People were joking. A simple "no" would've sufficed. In the previous video, you've made it abundantly clear that this thing is barely more powerful than the NES. NES can't robustly run Doom, end of story... I mean, good job researching the system further, but wasting a ton of effort on meeting an unrealistically high bar seems unnecessary at best.
It is now officially hacked.

106 likes@anonymousprofess it's coming man.. just wait its not easy but we are not far away.
5 likes@anonymousprofess I think Mario 3 might not run well right now do the the MMC3 chip but will still need do some digging into the firmware and emulator used to see what’s possible. But would be possible to get all the roms within reason
5 likesI kinda have a feeling they will be making other versions.
2 likescellphones aren't much bigger and they have 12gb of ram in some cases. Would be nice if they could put half that in a small handheld like this. lol
2 likesWould kinda defeat the purpose then I guess.
2 likes@Joseph L and they cost 500.00 this was a 50.00 device. 12gb if ram runs well over 100.00
4 likes@Joseph L 6GB in something designed to run a single NES game?! That's more than most budget PCs
0 likes@Heath Mitchell Ooh! A comment..

You'll never get the few minutes it took to read my comment and respond back. But you knew that already.. 😃
@Larry and Larry.. I totally missed this comment, but thanks for letting me know that all capable phones cost $500 and up.. my god, what ever are budget phone users going to do with these types of costs.. 🤨

17 likes@Nick Kromer I don't want it to replace Ball but I do want to just add the original Super Mario Bros G&W to mine too and I'll be satisfied.
5 likesI would be fine to play the GBC remakes on this thing. Hell, if Nintendo would have done that, I would have bought this thing.
5 likes@junosix I had the original 1988 or 1989 super Mario Bros game and watch it was cool.

3 likes@mjdxp we don't need luck if we've already done it.
0 likes@Not So Entertainment System That's not even possible because of how the original Game & Watch screens work, unless you modify them.
3 likes@mjdxp I know that.

1 like@Zack Merritt there’s really no need for him to do a tear down . It’s very simply soc with factory spec sheets on the manufacturers website that’s both the chip and memory other than that there’s not anything else to the device other than few buttons, battery pack a lightning power only charging port in an LCD display. The chip memory are very well documented and easy to work akrh within reason.

8 likes@mr Tree Actually at least the Donkey Kong ones are really good. I still love playing them.
7 likes@T.h. Claus not sure if the USB c port has the data pins but if it does you could load a custom firmware that runs whatever is off of a USB stick
0 likes@T.h. Claus 280 MHz ARM Cortex-M7 with 1.4 Mb RAM. That's a lot. Enough for any NES/SNES/GBC or GBA game (no 3D though - MCU doesn't have accelerator for that).
0 likes@First name Last Name Stacksmashing addressed this in his first video, stating that the USB-C port‘s datapins are unfortunately NOT connected. Only power. :(
2 likes@weaknespase Point taken. With no USB-C datapins connected this still leaves us with no storage to put them on. I‘m not an expert, but that could be solved by a hardware mod, right?
2 likes@T.h. Claus since this involves directly opening the system then yes you could do a hardware mode if you replace the flash memory with another 8 pin or 6 chip (whichever the handheld uses) with more storage
0 likesTotally agree. I thought about that at the very first stage of the hack. Playing Donkey Kong Jr for example will be so fun !
3 likes@Régis Oberlé Donkey Kong Jr is my favourite G&W game.

1 like@VectrexForEver omg - nice to see DKJr fans here - I still remember how insane the higher levels were :D
1 like@Dancin Forever A classmate in elementary school had one and I even loved just watching the time mode. The thing was magical at the time. Much later on I got my own one and the gameplay still holds up.
0 likes@Alan Robinson Interesting idea. E-paper displays might be fast enough to emulate LCD games.
0 likes@T.h. Claus Hardware and software mod. I don't think Nintendo engineers added USB support to the firmware. Routing it to onboard USB-C socket might be a little hard due to small contact pitch.
0 likesWe can also change onboard SPI flash IC for some other model with larger capacity - even 2 Gbit models exist - to give enough storage for roms.
Or even route SD card (MCU supports SDIO) slot, if some spare pins left.
@First name Last Name it doesn't have the data pins connected :(
0 likesThe ONLY reason I bought the "Game & Watch Gallery" collections on the GB and NDS all those years ago. I didn't like the "modern" adaptation, kept in the original LCD as it's much better. Donkey Kong Jr. FTW!!!!

8 likesAmazing progress, thank you for your effort!
2 likesKeep in mind, Doom required a mininum of 4MB of RAM to run back in the days (and at a very least a 386DX). This is pretty impressive for a really early alpha version of it. Wow, simply wow!
0 likesLove your work, bro.
0 likesIt's nice that you take the time to do this while explaining the process.
So quick question. .
Since Super Mario was an 8bit game, does this mean most nes games can be played on the game and watch system?
This is really cool! do you think in the future there might be a mod chip that you could put on to increase ram or something?
3 likesReplies (1)
Increasing the eeprom should be pretty easy. But working with the hardware inside the device is much better since most people are not going to solder their systems.
3 likesEven at currently it's pretty big ask for most people to connect two external programmers. It's just expensive for most people.
This is cool! Id like to see super mario 3 running! That game alone would make the game and watch a better product.

5 likesvery cool! I like how you optimize the code for this week hardware ,just like back i a good old days , when programmers were like magicians :) And it is funny that in modern days we have that kind of dedicated slow hardware :)
1 likeReplies (1)
I agree, back in the days programming was all about tricks for saving ran and faster functions. There are still people producing demo and games for the c64 and if you can make it run stuff there then on this a lot will be possible. Let's wait to see if anything will be available for general public, then lot of people will start playing with it. If someway the USB C can became accessible with a custom firmware it will be already a lot, but I did not understand if at least the hw connection are there of completely missing.
1 likei hope to maybe see an SD card solder hack where we can import the whole NES or a large chunk of the NES games! im excited to see this continue
1 likeWOW, I'll be over the moon if the entire NES ROM collection can one day be ran on the Game & Watch.
1 likeGreat project. Personally I would like to fit all the original Game & Watch games on this device.
0 likesYou’re doing god’s work right here. I would have though that the next logical step would be to check if you can dump and run other NES roms on the already provided emulator, but it may be more complicated than that. And also if the same thing can be done for Game and Watch titles, would love to mod this thing in such a way.
0 likesAwesome work!
0 likesThis thing needs a android pie system inside it..the game and watch 2020's hardware is really lacking.

0 likesthe old game and watch games running on the new game and watch, being able to switch top and bottom screens with a press of a button or something perhaps.. that would be cool
10 likesI love the homebrew/hacker community. It's like the lockpicking lawyer for electronic devices. Oh, you have encrypted firmware? Would be a shame if it were to be H A C K E D
0 likesCongrats on the progress, it would be great to have all GW games dumped into it, perhaps cut off one of the mario games, if no space is available. I just wonder if it ever becomes user serviceable change of roms.
0 likesIt is awesome work you did there. If I only could request something it would be possibility to put additional memory fort his device and a way to load any nes rom. It would be great. Anyway I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your project.
0 likesWhat would be nice if they come up with a replacement board, is if the charge port can also be used to upload new games. That way there's no need for a micro SD card slot and you also don't have to cutup the casing to add one or hopefully not have to put on a replacement back cover.
0 likesepic! looking forward to more homebrew game and watch!

0 likesAlso, if I understand correctly, this device should run generally all 1MB NES games without any game code modifications, right?
Another thing, would it be easy to swap memory chip for larger one (and use it)?
Oh, and when are you going to implement ray tracing? ;-)
Man, you are really crazy. And it's awesome!
0 likesDoom on Game and watch - it's great.

1 likeAwesome effort! Well done.
0 likesDamn. What a blast. I only played GZDoom and now i see Doom running with a four-bit Sharp SM5xx CPU and 1,3 mo Ram... I'm impressed
0 likesI think, it should be possible to make a hardware modification, solder USB lines to the MCU pins and add a few resistors. With that being done, you can write custom bootloader via vcom, or even implement a mass storage device feature if there is enough memory for that. Thank you, that was interesting.
0 likesNow, DOOM can live again in a new device: The Game And Watch.
0 likesCongratulations!
Holy crap! This is awesome! You should try to make your next thumbnail that hints at the device hardware. In the back of my mind I thought this would be another cob blob based device, and put off watching. This is tingling my current micropython possibilities interests.
0 likesAlso, that spi flash size is ridiculous! It's the only reason I haven't dropped everything to order one of these. If the penny pinchers had taken a bathroom break while a $0.25 bump in the BOM were added for a W25Q256 at 32MBytes, my sales conversion would be much easier. Heck, just add a dual footprint...and breakout the FSMC while your at it :-)
Awesome project.
Thanks for the upload.

0 likesI really hope they figure out something they can sell like a replacement board or something that the user can easily swap in and have a removable micro SD card.
0 likesWhat were the changes that moved it from a few seconds per frame to a few frames per second?
0 likesDamn. Nintendo designed this device basically to only run and store one rom. It would be difficult to add extra storage by soldering-- that would basically lock out the average end user
0 likesAwesome! Will an ARM debug probe be necessary to do this, or will an SPI flasher be enough?

0 likesOut of curiosity would there be a way to connect a usb drive or something like that to the usb-c and run games from there? It would stop the storage issues (well other than ram) and if it really works you could save your game and watch from being wiped everytime you change games

IMO trying to port Boom source instead couldve provided better performance.

How would you play Super Mario World with only two buttons?
2 likes@l3rvn0 hack the game so that you can do spin jump with down button mid-air like mario land 2, I believe that someone has already done that. but I believe you can beat the game without spin jumping ever, outside of few bonus areas and one of the star road levels.
4 likesFor Mario world, need romhacking for add L, R and B
1 like2 fast Left, the screens move to the left, same with Right, B button, Down+B (actual B button)
How about a more classic approach of a Game Boy Advance Classic to cover the Game Boy, Color and Advance libraries while supporting Super Mario All-Stars more properly?
1 like@l3rvn0 The device actually has 5 face buttons (along with the 4 d-pad buttons).
0 likesOr, since the guy above appears to want Nintendo to make the All-star version, they could just add an extra button near A and B, or add a shoulder button ala the GBA.
Or, make B run, A jump, but when up and A are pressed you spin jump

1 likeIdiot question : can the flash storage be replaced with bigger capacity to accommodate more roms
6 likesReplies (5)
@Blurigard with the typical rom size that would be enough for many nes games but if its as simple as taking the rom chip flashing it and soldering it , it would be a miracle before Christmas
1 like@STAR1035 It's an SPI ROM, so accessing more storage does not require any more pins, so I'd be confident that a substitution of a higher capacity chip from the same range would be entirely feasible. Once the authors publish their how-to and cracking tools, I could see this being a common mod.
2 likes@Blurigard and this guy is trying DOOM :/ come one man we need this mod asap i can play doom on anything else
1 likeI posted on the twitter thread: there is a 128mbit chip which is pin compatible with exactly the same package; but it would be nice to find a larger option
1 like@Thomas D that would be more then enough for roms
0 likesIll be watching your career with great interest. I wanna see what this thing can do
0 likesI just knew someone was going to attempt to bring the father of FPS on this game and watch
0 likesI should have known the classic, "Can it run Doom?" would be asked eventually.
0 likesSomeone needs to make a custom port of the SMB Game and Watch. Don't know why that wasn't included.
1 likeI knew my subscription was worth it. I'm so ready!
3 likesAwesome work!
0 likesHow TF is this thing being able to be modded?! It's quite incredible. Course i'm probably lacking context from not watching the video showed in the begining, but I guess that's the norm now for pretty much almost any electronics.

Replies (42)
we need this
5 likesOn 1 mb of storage. I doubt it. I dont if it will even be able to play the bigger snes games.
22 likes@Caden Tannery If it can play doom, it can play an early version of MC at least, or maybe Minecraft 4K
14 likes@Clipper YT it can't because first of all minecraft is closed source, second of all i doubt the game and watch will be able to run JVM, and it will need a lot of ram, doom is optimized for old hardware and minecraft isn't
16 likes@ishdx maybe create a remake
6 likesmany people have unofficially ported MC to other devices like the GBA, the NDS, etc.
Heck, I think someone's trying to port it to the SNES.
@Clipper YT that's a viable option indeed
3 likesBut can it play Mario 64?
5 likesI bet CNLohr could make it run minecraft server in no time.
1 like@mjdxp maybe, I guess that's the next step after doom
1 like@Clipper YT The problem with Bedrock edition: optimized for taking advantage of PC hardware better, but it's closed source and takes advantage of a CPU and GPU, not of a Microcontroller with no video engine.
1 likeThe peroblem with Java edition: IT'S JAVA OOHH
@Clipper YT did you see what he had to do to doom to make it work? you are asking for too much. there isn't enough room in the ram to store everything you need to make the game playable
1 like@mjdxp doubt so. even the anbernic rg350 can barely play the sm64 port
1 likeIt is but the handheld will only be capable to load 1 shunk
0 likes@Lo Nitro i mean, if a GBA port exists, it’s not entirely impossible to port it over to the Game and Watch. It’s just an extremely strange thing to do
2 likesNo

@Caden Tannery Minecraft 4k. A version of Minecraft made by Notch that's just 4kb
1 likeif the dynamic memory allocation of doom are too much, wait until you see minecraft's :D
0 likes@Caden Tannery you know this comment is a joke right?
0 likes@ishdx it being jvm would actually make it easier to get something closed source running, you'd just need to implement your own jvm. i doubt it would run all that well tho lol...
0 likes@ishdx and the forge project pretty much has minecraft under control lol
0 likes@Dexter Burk jvm is least hardest part, you'll need to at least port lwjgl
0 likes@ishdx and lwjgl shouldn't be too bad, you could mesa for the opengl implementation but if there's any closed source native libraries used in it that could pose an issue.
0 likes@Dexter Burk even after that you'd need to post standard library
0 likes@Dexter Burk at this point it will be just as hard as emulating x86 with some OS as the environment
0 likes@ishdx lol i don't have a game and watch but if i did i'd try to get an alpha version running, sounds like fun xD
0 likesIt’s not closed source. It’s obfuscated.
0 likes@TheAwesome98 it is closed source, even though it's obfuscated, reverse engineering java byte code is like reverse engineering assembly, but easier
0 likes@TheAwesome98 No, it's closed source. The control flow, variables, functions, etc. are readily reconstructed via decompilation of the bytecode but it is still closed source. It is also obfuscated.
0 likesHell nah thats a ton of space
0 likes@ishdx its java
0 likesI wish you could run minecraft on the og Xbox
0 likesMinecraft takes dozens of megabytes just to keep track of all the blocks in your immediate vicinity. With only 1.3MB to work with, you can't keep track of very much world.
1 likeExtremely early versions of Minecraft were just a very small, finite world with completely random blocks and nothing more than the ability to fly around remove and place blocks at will. That version might be playable on the G&W. But that's about it. There would only be a small handful of blocks to pick from. None of them would do anything. There would be no mobs. No crafting. No survival. Literally nothing except a small lego-esque canvas.
I tried loading farcry on mine and it caught fire, a few people we injured too, so I don't recommend it
0 likes@Clipper YT mc was made on java even java 4k so you would need a java runtime which would be bloated need to program a mc clone from scratch
1 like@ishdx minecraft has a program called mod coder pack which allows users to modify the source code, to create mods, its official too but it looks like it was killed off.
0 likes@Get Rekt A basic version like the GBC is about the same as 1mb (search up the video.)
1 like@Lo Nitro this is true, but people have made versions of minecraft without java or C#/C++
1 like@Rickasheye Labs Yes, but mc clones from scratch are existent. Some people have the knowlege to port minecraft from scratch to the gba
0 likes@Clipper YT yes i have seen it done just not to a potential it could've been since of the hardware.
0 likes@Clipper YT c, it's lagging already on a raycaster, a very primitive type of 3d graphics. doom is basically a 2d level being rendered into 3d space. now imagine coding a open gl interpreter on this thing. even if that fits into the storage, the game and watch processor would never be able to run this with less than one yps (years per second)

Maybe even one that does stereo or something. Though I don't even know if something like that exists already for the consumer market.
0 likesI wonder if it could run Super Mario World. It's only 512 KiB. No clue how big a SNES emulator would be though, or if the hardware is powerful enough to run one. Could be that the emulator can't fit even if the ROM can.
0 likesOf course the internet finds a way to have Doom run on a new device lol

1 likeAt this point, everything can run doom
1 likeOk, let's make this even more challenge... take those early 80's Game and Watch devices and port Doom to them... :) (those devices didn't even have pixels)
0 likesSince theres an arm chip in it, that means it’s 32bit because every arm chip is at minimum 32bit, but if ram became an issue, well mmmm because the gba has also limited rom & availible ram,
0 likesBTW The last device I want to see doom running on is a gameboy/color!!!

0 likesHi :) You really should try doom ports to stm32 F7-CPU´s (maybe this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLcnNJVRS5A and https://github.com/Julioyevenes/doom_f7/tree/master/src) for the lack of memory you could find unused pins of the cpu and solder some wires to a sd-card slot (prefer sdio. spi is much slower...). Just beware: the f769 disco - board used in the videolink above is using a display connected via DSI...
0 likesF7 and H7 CPU´s have far more advanced capabilities than F4´s (I- and D-Cache and so on), so you really should use them with the provided H7B8 CPU ;)

I mean the one in the video is based on stm32doom, and the doom_f7 is also using Chocolate Doom :) I am already using I & D-Cache

0 likesReplies (1)
The external flash is slow to access, that’s the main issue - not unfixable but more work required :)

1 likeI just wish Nintendo would release a patch of some sort to add the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch game. (Not the NES one, the Game & Watch one.) It would've been a much better fit for this G&W than a Ball version with a Mario head, for which the controls are wrong.
0 likesWell done!
0 likesYup, the size is EXACTLY what I said would make this a real challenge to put on this device due to the very limited flash RAM & that it's size would have to somehow be drastically reduced, and some idiots that didn't know what they were talking about tried to say I was full of it. Yeah, that's what I thought.
0 likesBut why would you not buy 128Mbit flash chip (e.g. MX25U12835F costs $2.27 on Digikey) and replace the 1 megabyte chip?
0 likesWould not that solve the storage issue?
Seeing doom on things like this and pregnancy tests are just plain fun. But i don't get why you would use the game and watch as a machine for homebrew? There should be so many more better options with portable consoles that has more powerful machines and better ergonomic?
0 likesThere is a hidden rule in life my friends and I know it well if there is a screen it can play doom
0 likesNot gonna lie I wanna buy a second Game and Watch just to do this
0 likesMame running Sharp SM51x (G&W CPU) would be nice. Seems to support all G&W games.

0 likesDude you're a legend
0 likesSo why not swap the SPI to a 256Mb version, and also add onto memory using a 4Mb SRAM SPI (and use CE1 of the ST32)? That would probably allow a much better port to run.

0 likesI think his version of playable and mine are drastically different.
0 likesIf something doesn't run Doom... basically doesn't exist in gaming universe :D greetings from Poland :)
0 likesBut the question is....it worths the hard work? This process is not avalaible for the general crowd, requires solid skills and knowledge. I was hoping to make as simple as insert an usb with software. Seems never will be that easy due the usb port its only meant for charge purposes.
0 likesI really wish some dude at Nintendo added 20 MB of flash for the heck of it.
0 likesDang, you are so boss. Nice job.
0 likesgreat work with this! so explain like im 5 .. is the loading of roms and code avail without hardward modification now/ever? or is that further down the line? SMB2 on this is my end goal since i saw the first vid. good luck!

You will have to open it up and connect a couple of wires, but they can be removed afterwards - USB will only be possible with hardware mods

0 likesThis means the original game boy was always hackable right ? Cause it had some similarities. Like tiny screen. Terrible memory. Ect. If only I had my original game boy again. With the accessories.
0 likesAmazing hack. Is posible new games NES in the future?.
0 likesThanks for this awesome work.
Nintendo doing relentless copyright claims just means I will play more emulated and less on their hardware.
0 likesBut can it run:
0 likes- Bad Apple

- Has Skyrim been ported to it yet?
I wonder if one day I'll be able to get N-Gage games running in there haha
0 likesChristmas came early! Great teamwork!
0 likesWhat CPU is in the G&W? I'm surprised that the classic software renderer would run so slowly on it, or that texturing would make such a large difference, especially since Doom ran really well on a 486/33 back in the day and that had very little memory bandwidth.
1 likeReplies (5)
It’s mainly where code and data reside. As some of it is in the external flash the access are really slow. Need to do some profiling and then it will run great
0 likes@stacksmashing Ah, that makes sense.
0 likes280MHz 32-bit ST ARM
1 like@RWL2012 Ah, so yeah it's definitely a bandwidth limitation and not a compute speed limitation. Needing to turn off textures in that context makes perfect sense, although I'm surprised that even doing flat-filling is going so slowly.
0 likesDoom has a powerfull cache system but it wasn't designed for extremely slow storage, you might have to preload the most important assets at level startup
0 likesOk now we need Mario 64 on it
1 likewill we eventually be able to add more NES games in it?this is a legitimate questions 👍
0 likesReplies (2)
Might have to replace games due to the limited storage but it should be possible to play any NES ROM/hack soon.

0 likesAAAAND now it's another console that can play doom. Can we get a list of all the objects that can play doom?
0 likescan it run wad’s? like Brutal Doom?
0 likesBut can it run Skyrim?? That’s the real question at hand
1 likeThat's interesting that you had to modify the game! There wasn't some sort of homebrew NES ROM of Doom around?
0 likesReplies (3)
I only know of one, but it uses a special chip inside the cartridge. That chip wouldn't be emulated in an NES emulator, so it wouldn't be usable.
1 like(specifically, it uses a Raspberry Pi inside that cartridge. It still runs on the NES, but the Rpi does the actual computational work, with the NES mostly just handling output and controls.)
@ZipplyZane Fascinating! Thanks for answering.

1 likeBut - can you run it on an ORIGINAL Game and Watch?! 😏
0 likesImpressive!
0 likesAll I want is to be able to add Mario Bros 3 and Donkey Kong onto the Game & Watch.
0 likes"[...] and just fixed whatever compilation issues came up." Talk about an understatement xD (Okay, I'm not personally involved in the project so maybe it really was that easy, but I can count the number of times I "just" fixed a compiler error on one hand)
0 likesReplies (1)
Getting it to compile was really surprisingly easy! Getting it to run was hard 😅
1 likeIt looks like a Chinese rip off Doom. Either way this is super cool
0 likesBut now there is the real question.... But can it run Crysis?
0 likesvery good work
0 likesnow all we need is an NES emulator
0 likesJust out of curiosity wouldn't Wolfenstein 3d run better straight off the bat or even Commander Keen?
0 likesIs it possible for it to run NES games other than Mario?
0 likesDoom
0 likesThe chevy LS engine of running games on hardware
Now I can die in peace. Thank you.
1 likeHey @stacksmashing do you think we might end up with a solderable chip solution like @bateskecom created for Arduboy?
0 likesNow can you get a Gameboy emulator running on it?
0 likesI want the GB color g & g versions, better if have the high scores save
0 likesIs that error popup at 4:00 from an emulator, or are you debugging over JTAG?
0 likesCongratulations!
0 likesImho such tiny lcd is best suited for 2D games. You wouldn't like to play fast shooting game after 10 hours of job. Some small groovy code for having quality time would be perffecto. Maybe .gif player/pic/anim viewer for start ?
"Pixel art viewer?"
All best
I only want 5 legendary NES games in it.
0 likesHope the process is easy for a broke guy.
Time to buy triwing and a programmer
1 likeIf it is a computer it will run doom. Check out the Pioneer XDJ-RX2 running doom
0 likesGame & watch will be complete with All 3 Mario’s on it.
0 likesI thought you would just use the gba rom on a retropie kernel.
0 likesnow someone make it run Super Mario 64
0 likesSoon We’ll have Super Mario 64 on the game & watch.
0 likesPlanet X3 would be a great game for this!!!
0 likesI hope that nintendo won't strike your channel ❤️
0 likesAwesome, I knew it👍
0 likesNot to be "that guy," but the Doom 1 WAD is actually about 10.6 MB, not 4. 4 MB is for the (freely distributable) Shareware version, which only contains the first episode (and so is missing anything that'd be in Episodes 2 or 3).
0 likesThere's also a version of Doom called "Ultimate Doom" and that adds a fourth episode.
Replies (1)
Hmm the DOOM1 WAD I have and that is linked here is 4MB, what are the differences there? I’m not a doom expert 😀 https://doomwiki.org/wiki/DOOM1.WAD - also see the latest video, we now have 16MB of storage :)
0 likesthe moment weve all been waiting for...
0 likesWelp, time to buy a mario game and watch.
0 likesYeah, but can it run Duke Nukem?
0 likesI've been waiting for this
1 likeYou should run a Unix or Linux based os on this lmao
0 likesModern Vintage Gamer would say: Mistakes were made :D
0 likesWell that was fast. Congrats!
2 likesKnew it was gonna happen but i was to lazy to get one
0 likescouldnt you just run a Doom rom from a Game Boy Advance emulator? (granted it is possible to port a GBA emu to this thing)
0 likes105 dislikes came from Nintendo Ninjas
0 likesnew device: barely has a security
0 likesmodders:
But can it run super mario 64?
0 likesthis is great, but the system definetly needs posts of different games instead, cave story anyone?
0 likesNice one!
0 likesYou are the Master!!!
0 likesYou cant call something 100% hacked id it cant run DooM
0 likesIt would be awesome if u put MICRO MAGES on that device. Its an indie NES game that recently release on 2019, please try it instead forcing the doom like that
0 likesThe real question is, can it play Crysis? To be honest if it can play mario bros, SMB2US, SMB3 and vs. SMB i will be very happy... im suprised Nintendo has not pulled their c & d bullshit.
0 likesNow do the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis.
0 likesi wonder if bank switching isnt possible, how do i get started in hardware hacking?
0 likesI'm a novice.
0 likesCan't the flash be replaced with a lager one later on??
Or use USB port?
Replies (1)
Yup and we are trying a couple of things like that. The USB port is physically not connected to the CPU, so enabling it would require a hardware mod
1 likeSo when it can run doom on 10fps it can run cyberpunk 2077 on 30fps right? I mean doom has more advanced graphics
1 likeReplies (1)
I assume so!
0 likesCan it play Crysis tho? 😅 Awesome Job!
0 likesthought at some point you would have replaced the flash rom with a bigger one.
0 likesThat massive 5 fps is a pure joy for eyes.
0 likesReplies (1)
Runs almost as good as Cyberpunk 2077! :D
0 likesthanks for taking ur time. But I wonder wouldnt be better to port SNES roms into the Game and watch??
0 likesHomebrew Game & watch....now that is niche`!
0 likesRespect. 👏🙌
1 likeAccording to the source, your MCU runs only on 64 MHz, which is far below its maximum. Are you sure you configured everything correctly?
0 likesReplies (2)
I modified the clock directly in the C code, not in the IOC, so I think it should be running at 280MHz - but definitely possible (and likely) that I messed something up 😀
0 likes@stacksmashing Well, just by a short look i can't tell either. Maybe you're right. BTW you should try overclocking it. 300MHz should be no problem.
0 likesThis should be hacked to play Game Gear games so it becomes a better GG micro!
0 likesDoom works so it's good.
0 likesWhere did they even find a 1.4Mb chip? OMG ....
0 likesNice video!
0 likesyou think you could you reconnect the usb c data pins to make it easier?
0 likesWait a minute, the Doom you show at 5:23 is NOT the Doom you show at 5:33. So to be clear, the Doom you got running is the one shown at 5:23 not 5:33, right?
0 likesReplies (1)
At 5:33 I added a couple of original sprites into miniwad so it looks nicer, so both are running on the G&W :)
0 likesIt runs Doom!
0 likesFirst Doom. Then Crysis! :)
0 likesI just want mario 3 on it .

0 likesCan it also play Bubsy 3D ?
0 likesjust put the G&W emulator onto this device with all G&W games. Image playing donkey kong jr or Mario Cement factory on it :-)
0 likesI think G&W games will suit this screen much better. SMB is too tiny, sprites are almost not visible on this small screen. Bigger sprites like G&W games would be better visible on this small screen.
We got a new worst version of doom. 32x you can take a back seat now finally.
0 likesMmmm this 1mb flash is should be cool to change for a 4mb or a 8mb :)

Replies (1)
He did inject a different ROM in his previous video. The issue is that apparently Nintendo does some additional, on-the-fly patching of the ROM, so you would need to make that doesn't mess up the game.
0 likesNow that he has access to the firmware, he could disable the on-the-fly patching, so I'd expect it to work. The only issue would be if the NES emulator isn't accurate. But I doubt that Nintendo would write a new one just for this device, so it probably is accurate.

the hardware required is cheap, not to mention useful for hacking other devices too.
0 likesDude, it was a joke, a meme. People were joking. A simple "no" would've sufficed. In the previous video, you've made it abundantly clear that this thing is barely more powerful than the NES.
0 likesNES can't robustly run Doom, end of story...
I mean, good job researching the system further, but wasting a ton of effort on meeting an unrealistically high bar seems unnecessary at best.
