Mythological Creatures in MLP

Hi! This episode is a year old, I get that, but there are somethings I would like to point out as someone who's studied the Ancient Greeks and Romans. 

I'm coming into this opinion as a sort of outside view. I love MLP but I was into the Classical Languages and Cultures ling before. I really, really enjoy how you draw comparisons between mythology and MLP. There are however, a few differences I'd like to clarify.

I say Greek AND Roman mythology because the Romans were the most unoriginal civilization in the Ancient world. The mythologies are nearly identical with different names and interpretation differences. 

Regarding your thought of the ponies being deities, I like it, but I wouldn't connect them to the Gods you mentioned. I would actually put Luna and Celestia in the Titan God category. 

***Important: If you've seen Disney's Hercules, please disregard anything they ever said in that movie about Titans***

The Titans were the Gods that originally ruled over the world before the Olympians took over. They were the walkmans to our iPods... I guess?

The thing that is special about the Titans is while the were Deities, they seemed to be a more pure form of what they represented. Selene was the Titan Goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology and that's all she was. Artemis is the Goddess of the Hunt and seemed to have taken the role over the moon solely because she was Apollo's twin. The original Sun God, Helios, was only the God of the Sun while Apollo is the God of many things.

The other reason I think the sisters are more Titan-like is because Selene is known as Luna (ding ding) in Roman mythology. She is depicted as having a crescent moon as a crown.

The sisters also seem to be much, much older than any other pony. My thought is that Luna and Celestia are Titans and Cadence and Twilight are more of Olympians. I'm going to say that based on the appearance of the sisters vs. the other alicorns. Now, I realize the debate between natural-born alicorns and created alicorns could also explain this difference, but the sparkly hair, taller-larger appearance, could also be due to the sisters being the Titans and currently in power.

That's my rant.

All creatures have their own kind of magic it’s just that ponies and discord seem to store and control more magic.

Dragons are also magical because of what happened when Spike got greedy.

2:17 Actually, in Greek Mythology, Icarus flew too close to the sea and the wax in his wings got wet. In the Roman myth, he flew too close to the sun.

I actually saw the snake's eyes as a reference to disney's "The Jungle Book". What do you think?

You know this now has me thinking that when Discord may have been Star Swirl, he could have been an Alicorn also, on account of his large amount of magic, as to his being considered like to a Greek god. We know Star Swirl wore a wizard's cloak, and that he was unusually powerful and created many complex spells.

I think you're definitely correct about the show taking some ideas from Greek Mythology, but I think it is incorrect to draw parallels beyond nomenclature. In the real world, the writers may be repackaging old stories in a new medium, so you may see the old stories and believe that this story here is the same. But that would be just as fallacious as believing the remake of an old movie has the same ending as the original. (This often happens to books when they are repackaged into movies) 

What that means is that, though the stories may be parallel, they are not guaranteed to be the same. In fact, they are almost certainly going to differ. I like your suggestion that Discord created creatures and they are somehow leftover from his reign of chaos. I prefer to believe that each creature is a member of a larger population, i.e. there is more than one Chimera, Ursa, Cerberus, etc. However, my proof is as scarce as yours.

The Greek and Roman influences in Mlp really helped out on my latin exam when I had to provide examples of Greek and/or Roman influences on modern times in the culture section.

The goats which were sacrificed to the Minotaur are in the maze also, now what I don't get is if the princesses banished Terek (sorry if spelt wrong) why did they not take role if leader until after discord unless if they were together at the same time because Terek knew discord. Now that got off topic but there must be a symbol for banishing Terek to Tartarus if Tartarus is not "hell" but a spot in hell for the titans banished and to never return.

I love when you take all the little details and put them together to make big facts and I also think mlp is related to greek mythology

Celestia=Apollo. Reason:They both control the sun.
Luna=Artemis. Reason:Both control the moon.
Cadance=Aphrodite. Reason:They both control love.
Discord=Eris. Reason:Both are spirits of chaos.

Others have mentioned it, but the snake's hypnotic eyes resemble the snake in Jungle Book.

The idea of ponies being demigods is really interesting though, and it was nice to see all the references to Greek mythology that I missed ^^

I think you should elaborate on the 'ponies being gods idea.' It makes a lot of since. I've always wondered where they came up with the personalities and talents of the ponies. Each character probably represents something in the Greek stories. Some of the episodes might even be based off of some Greek legends.

Two alicorns ruled a land. There names Clestia and Luna.
The ailcorn built animals like griffons.
Griffons where greedy freaks who craved to be "shiny like golden stars" and freaks out when they know they can't be star golden.
Next was the dragoness. Dragonesses where animal with a singing voice which charmed ponies leading them into the ocean to drown. Males (which were called Dragoni) had powers even crazier then a female's. Ponies followed the animal into a grass garden. Put on the grass garden was a wooden chair craved with the words saying "You are the king!" The animal would act like he was a king. Until he kill him with a ball of blall.

No matter what. No matter if it's a review or just some pony video, if you mention the fire swamp, you have to reference "Princess Bride". Law of the fandom! Also this one of the best theories I've heard in a long time. So many possibilities! Keep up the awesome!

Take this from someone who's loved Greek mythology since my childhood, you got a couple things wrong. First off Chimera is pronounced Ki-mee-rah, you don't use the "ch." Also, Artemis and Apollo are technically the gods of the moon an sun, but Apollo and Artemis are gods of many things, and the sun and moon aren't the main thing they represent. That honor would go to two minor gods, Helios and Selene, gods of the sun and moon respectively.

I really like that, and it actually makes a lot of sense. We could possibly use that as foreshadowing to figure out whether or not the rest of the mane 6 will become alicorns as well. Here's what I matched up: (Including yours)

How is it lazy to reuse the animation for the eyes? That was clearly a reference to how snakes are said to be able to hypnotise you with their eyes in certain cultures, as seen in Jungle Book. The effect they used fo Discord was also this hypnosis eye effect. They are literally the same. How is it lazy to use the same effect for what is literally the same thing? You aren't making a lot of sense with that argument.

However you are probably right. The Everfree forest which has most of these monsters in it, is created from Discord's magic. And we know the chimeras are magically created. So two and two together, it makes sense to me!

Actually in Greek mythology Selena was the goddess of the moon, Artimas stood for the moon, but I get why you use artimas and apollo . Most people think it's artimas but it's Selena look it up. And for info Helios was the god of the sun.

Although discord is a boy (if he even has a gender) he could also be Eris, goddess of discord. It would make more sense than him being Ares, who although he thrives in chaos, it is war chaos unlike the weird chaos that discord thrives in. Eris's chaos is less specific and could rotate between many different forms, probably why she is Ares right hand women

It does sound like you're on to something. I would believe that all you stated about their status being gods are demigods would be true. All I can really say is that I love the fact that Princess Celestia Princess Luna I have the rulership. I definitely love them to pieces!

I think that makes a lot of sense actually! But we may be looking too closely. Maybe it is much simpler than that, maybe Discord was given magic like in the episode were magic was stolen,maybe he earned it way, way, way back in history.

Don't forget about the interesting parallels between Greek and Pegasus architecture and culture, especially what we've seen of equestria's distant past.

When Luna was posessed with evil, could it (the evilness inside her) be a titan? Kronos is the father of the 6 Olympian gods (including Hades). Could it be Kronos that posessed Luna to becoming Nightmare Moon? Maybe he possesed her so he could overthrow Celestia and make everypony and mythological creature his slaves or just rule them unfairly.

I maybe making zero sense, but this is my thoughts.

I would say earthponies are more mortal than demigod.

I like to think that this mythology stuff can tie into the lifespans of the characters too.
For example:

Discord lives forever. The alicorns can live just as long. Unicorns are immortal too, so they live for centuries. The pegasi live long too, but less than unicorns. And the earthponies are horses so they can only live up to 30 years.
To me, earthponies are like humans, pegasi are like hobbits, unicorns are like elves and the alicorns are like Aragorn.

Hmm... Twilight would be Athena (goddess of wisdom) and Hecate (Titaness of magic) combined. The other princess' Greek god correspondents make sense. I never thought of the Discord-invented-the-monsters-thing before! Nice thinking!!

the only problem I have with cadences being Aphroditie is Aphroditie was born a goddess, and the only god/goddess that might have a slight possibility of being older then her is the goddess of magic and crossroads, while cadences was made a alicorn.

And if this did connect to Greek mythology as closely as you mentioned, then does that mean that Celestia, Luna, Cadence and Twilight, as princesses, have someone they take orders from. A Zeus of sorts?
Greek mythology does seem like the birth place of many ideas for monsters. They are one of the oldest documented civilizations. Therefore, they have a lot of influence over the rest of the world when looking into mythical non-human-esque creatures.
Now on a side note, my sister and I were discussing Bat ponies and crystal ponies. Bat ponies seem to be a night variant of normal Pegasi, and Fluttershy was changed rather easily. Is it possible that there really is another group of flying ponies that lean more toward the night?
My sister has theorized that yes, they do exist. And they aren't the only ponies that lean toward the night. In her theory, Crystal ponies play a similar role to the bat ponies when compared to Earth ponies. Partially due to the fact that there are no Crystal Pegasi or Crystal unicorn. The crystal ponies were seen as the night variant of the earth ponies until Sambra had sent them away. During the time they were gone there was an uneven balance of day and night species. You see where I'm going with this don't you? Just like your review with CC, my sister believes that there was a point in history, after Sambra's banishment that led to tension between day and night species leading to an eventual banishment of the night species. Since the crystal ponies weren't around at the time, their story had been altered and forgotten for years, only to return as another group of ponies. Bat ponies however still haven't returned.
And maybe you're saying, that's fine and all, but there is no unicorn equivalent to this so called night ponies.
What if I told you we may have already seen one. Sambra himself.
Out of all the unicorns seen, good, bad, rude, nice, smart or dumb, he is the only one with a curved horn. Could it be that the unicorn's night equivalent is basically a unicorn with a curved horn instead of a straight one?

Nope, i don't think so, the Chimera in Greek Mythology It was one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna and a sibling of such monsters as Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra. Echidna(mate wasTyphon) was a monster, half-woman and half-snake, was the mother of many of the most famous monsters of Greek myth including Cerberus, so it may be the other way around Discord is a offspring of Echidna. Typhon was also a sepertin giant lie his wife the son of Gaia and Tartarus

The animation used in the snake's eyes and Discord's eyes came from the movie "The Jungle Book". Where that snake hypnotized Mogli.

1:27 That very animation that Discord and the tail of Chimera use is THE EXACT SAME as the animation in an old movie (By old I think it was made in 2006 or something) called Jungle Book, which I still own. I'm not sure if Tirek could be classified as a centaur, because to my knowledge a centaur is part horse and part human.  Tirek seems to be part horse and part ram-goat thing.

I have a theory about the sirens! Maybe they were once ponies. Their pony form is cannon, and they have cutie marks. Their hippocampus form doesn't have cutie marks. My theory is that they were born ponies, they got their cutie marks from singing as their talent, since they all have a music note on their marks, and one day they found the gems that turned them into sirens, and their hippocampus form. They used the gems to sing and get power, and they relied on the gems so much that they forgot how to sing without them.

I kind of think that Twilight would represent Heracles or some might be familiar with Hercules. Just like Heracles she did a bunch of tasks before she became a princess.

good theory though. But there is a problem about that theory. (well maybe just for me)

when discord snaps in his claw or paw or whatev, he will need some'thing' to make it any thing he want. I know that sometimes when he snaps his claw or paw, he makes something appear on thin air. But as you will see at the season 7 episode 2 (or 3 cause i don't know what episode is bottled up), starlight says about the disappearing spell that it's not actually disappearing. It's actually teleporting spell. Maybe it's how discord's magic works too.

Well, since discord is the only one that only one with the title of god, i do see the Greek scene and stuff but I think discord is the only god because like you said he could of made the animals. Or like in most Greek myths discord is the god and discords parents are Titans. based on ink rose's theory she said that Luna's and tia's parents were most likely Zeus and Hera and they live on Olympus which is possibly space, but as you know the titan war discords parents were the titans of chaos, and in Greek myths they were defeated but locked up,and soon to show up. that's my theory.

That theory about gods-demigods-mortals thing will be true it will explain why ponies live for a really long time, why even earth ponies have magic and why the others don't. I think it has atleast a bit of true in it... but if someone cough cough Lauren cough cough or others cough cough won't tell that it's totally wrong. ;-)

All those magical creatures like the timber wolf where created by discord there is some similarities to it like the fact that the timber wolf is made of sticks and can form an even bigger one!

and if the show said that ponies were like demigods, and everyone else is mortal,that would be a bad message to send to a young audience, and how would there be a difference between creatures as a monster and creatures chose as more pony/civilized?

In Greek mythology almost all MLP creatures are a thing. Even horses were used in battle.

They're also the same eyes Kaa Uses in the Jungle Book, which being Disney, is completely unrelated to MLP.

I'm pretty sure they are just supposed to be generic hypno-eyes.

Nice theory. Just wondering something though. Applejack, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie and Rarity are elements of harmony. Shouldn't they be practically gods? Twilight is an allicorn because of these 5 ponies. Because of them, she became a goddes. She also gets most of her power from them.

So, another ancient Greek reference they put in MLP, was the Crystal Ponies.. the head bands on some of the mares resembled those of ancient Greeks.

My headcanon is that the chimera is a dracoequus. Inter species body parts, the eyes that you mentioned, and it being a magical intelligent creature.

Oh so that's why the show interested me so much. I was always way into the percy jackson books to begin with...

If the alicorns are gods, as well as Discord, it still makes sense within the main cannon. This would probably make Twilight Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic. And before y'all just say "no, she's princess of FRIENDSHIP not MAGIC, idiot!", in this universe, friendship IS magic. So ha. :p

Not to mention the fact that, in Greek mythology, the gods would grant the heroes immortality and make them gods, if they thought them worthy.

I thought that discord created them. In the episode, School Raze, Twilight uses all the magic from the creatures. Every creature becomes a normal animal : panda, lion, dogs, snake, tiger, goat, wasp, chicken, snake, and lobsters. Maybe when discord turned those normal creatures into stone, they became those CRAZY animals.

When Twilight & Flash Sentry fell in love with one another. It is a reference to Heracles (as I mentioned earlier) falling in love with his half-sister, Hebe, the goddess of youth.

Because Greek mythology is the best. They had the coolest monsters, the coolest civilization, and they left a lasting mark on western society. Whereas Roman and Egyptian mythology was largely forgotten. (Unless you're Rick Riordan, that is...)

i think its basically because we americans came mainly from europe and for multiple centuries or however long, christianity and cat holism have dominated the area.  even surrounding lands being monotheistic unlike greek mythology.  the reasoning for this is basically that there are more interesting stories to be inspired by from polytheisms and animisms.  in monotheisms, one god, some holy and unholy creatures are all thats really provided.  while diverse in itself much of its mythology has been lost with the enlightenment.

polytheisms and such make and have more interesting takes on their beliefs in the world and what it says exists.  its more interesting to have multiple gods be at odds with one another rather than write another story of good vs evil in its primitive black and white formula.

However she is described as the daughter of nyx the night. There are quite a few fanfic's of Luna being twilights mother. I'm not saying this is true but what if cadence is actually celestia's daughter and twilight luna's and when Luna went all nightmare moon celestia cast a spell removing her wings and giving her to the sparkle family. But because twilight is immortal celestia had to cast a spell to make twi a foal again. Celestia could have decided that leaving cadence with her was too dangerous so as a foal cadence was sent to the crystal empire to live until so bra came around. When he did cadence accidentally cast a love spell on the guards and hid her horn by accident and she had to wait until she completed her destiny to get it back!!!

Except that Discord is not the only non-pony with magic. Changelings, Zebras, and Tirek all seem to have magic of their own.  I would also wager that there are a fair number of other races that have magic. Further, if magic is the thing that makes ponies "Gods" how does that account for Earth Ponies and Pegasai?

Well, now you have to add the sirens. In rainbow rocks the sirens are the Dazzling. Now Sunset Shimmer is part of the group. Maybe that's why SPOILERS ALERT the big rainbow fie horse was unlocked. Because of Sunset Shimmers new side, the rainbow horse was unlocked to destroy the sirens. Though it does look like Princess Celestia. I think its possible that in the 3rd movie, the real Twilight Sparkle not from equestria but the one that was there in the first place,(Not a princess doesn't know about friendship Twilight Sparkle), would play a big part in the next movie. Maybe the sirens will finally feel what Sunset was feeling. But when would the pony friends go through the portal? Is it not really safe? I mean why wouldn't the sirens go through the portal but instead go on through the battle? They had a shot of going through the portal. And, they could have runned for it while Twilight was down. Also. Why in the world would they want to take over Canterlot high? They could have just gotten all the magic and figure out a way through the portal.
