There might also be a way to compress the contents of floppy disks.
Fun fact: Some older Apple computers formatted their floppies using CLV instead of CAV, improving storage densities. This posed problems for compatibility, though.

I feel worse for drive B. At least A stuck around until about 2004 (or even later on some computers), whereas B quickly vanished once dual-floppy systems went out of vogue. The only computer I ever had that had A, B and C was an XT clone with a 3½" drive (A), a 5¼" drive (B) and a 10MB HDD (C).

You should be able to compress it further from the WIM file. That WIM file should house multiple editions ie Home, Pro, etc, and can be compressed into an ESD file which is more compact. A lot of this can be done in the command line tool DISM.

Wouldn't save any space; all editions are repeated and tightly packed information, in total resulting in around 130GB of unpacked data. Removing information repetitions would not add to compression rate.

two things I would of done, 1) extract teh ESD file for the edition you need, 2) format the 3.5" floppy to DMF. Additional non-standard formats: 1.72MB and 1.68MB DMF (3.5 inch disks). The DMF (1.68MB) format is often used for distribution floppies under Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000. I forgot the tool name but I got a DOS program to format to different sizes.

Once I saw a video about how you can actually make the disk capacity increase by changing the number of sectors during format and that is how Windows 95 floppy version works. With this way I think the number of floppies could be decreased
I once had a laptop with Windows 95 on it. I spent a great deal of time upgrading it to Windows 98SE by means of floppy disks because.. well.. I wasn't going to pay for the floppies at the time when I had a perfectly good version on my PC. Back in those days they left the original setup files right there on the drive for you to reinstall or copy.. 30 some odd floppies and hours later and decompression thanks to WinRAR, it was worth it. Could never imagine doing what you did on real hardware. I constantly had to recopy some floppies and toss out ones that had died. Oh God, to see that end part, you must have no life. I feel the same way.
I bet there is a "compact" version of Windows 10 out there that's meant to run on lower end hardware with less storage, so that it could be easier to install it manually
Reminds me of when I had to install Office 6 from 60+ floppies. And before that you had to install a "qualifying" program that was on another 30+ floppies. Aaargh!

You're just nuts. I remember it being bad enough to install Windows 95 with floppies but using nearly 3,000 disks for Win 10 goes beyond crazy. I love this video but can you imagine doing this on ACTUAL hardware, not using a VM or disk images. The safest way would be to have a pack of around 10 to 20 disks to hand, so that while the install is using one handful of disks, you can be writing the next images onto the disks. Or you could have every single one of those 2,836 disks and a ton of patience.

But back in the day -- back before CDs and CDRs, for instance -- for most people 1.44MB floppies were the most efficient media around for the majority of tasks. In the ~1MB RAM era, when video memory was counted in KB, and long before the multi-GB HDD floodgates finally opened, a 250MB drive was generally considered to be big and a 512MB drive was for pro servers only. Most apps fit on a single 1.44MB floppy. Shit, a 320KB Amiga FishDisk held dozens of programs.
Next: hacking Windows source code, and then typing it all back in to install it. Then, calling Microsoft to tell them that it was for the sake of science.

That’s really helpful, but... 1. Is it bootable? 2. Does it support UEFI? 3. Where can we find 3000 floppy disks? 4. Can you do it on your pc and not on a VM? Until they recently upgraded, the IRS online servers still runs on floppy disks, Windows 3.11. The alternatives were Linux and Windows NT but they decided 3.11 would be easier and cheaper to maintain.
I understand maybe that floppy disks may be long forgotten, but that does not mean that you cannot be able to insert a floppy disk because windows 10 and even the latest version of Windows 11 still is supported to be able to read. I’m not sure can you write but you can read floppy diskettes if you insert them to the OS.

Because you are so good at removing and making malware, (I know this because you removed NoEscape.exe) you should put loads of tiny bits of malware on a doomed, cheap computer and try to get rid of the malware without the computer being harmed.
You could have used an ESD which is generally smaller and compressed it in something like tar.xz to decrease the file size and the amount of floppy images.

I somehow missed how you got your custom PE booted only from floppy disks. Two ways I could think of: 1) Use DOS RAR on DOS 7 or similar to get it to a FAT32 partition and then boot it via UEFI 2) Use some floppy-based Linux distro to get it to a second hard disk and use ms-sys.sourceforge.net to make it bootable.
Once you have booted PE from floppies only, the rest is "just tedious" (no real challenges left in my opinion).
Here I thought it was awful when Disk 35 of 37 of Lotus SmartSuite was corrupt on a friend's computer. (My own worst was disk 20 of 21 for an animation I did for a school project being bad - then I came home and a roommate showed me their new Zip drive).
You should've use only floppies for installation. Boot from floppy, run your program from there and then start installation without having this windows running.

That is utter madness nobody is going to create a setup disk on Floppies on 2,836 floppy discs, you have a DVD or USB for that purpose, and Windows installation files will never be on Floppy discs unless it's Windows 3.1 and Windows 95/98 etc.
I remember when building computers was not an option back in the early 2000s we had to buy them physically it's basically the same thing except building takes time and a lot more money I remember having a quad core desktop was literally considered good enough for gaming and it was an Acer running on Windows 7 we're actually rushing our technology and it's not good. If you actually think about it the early 2000s was not that long ago it just feels like a long time has passed Windows XP had a longer run than Windows 7 and suddenly Microsoft wanted to ditch their famous Operating System it's almost like someone more evil is at work in the Microsoft corporation.
You could theoretically shrink down the WIM further if you use NTLite to remove everything but what is needed to have a fully functional Windows install
It should be possible to retain core Windows 10 functionality with just 15 MB, so a 10 floppies would be enough. Everything else could be downloaded. Some linux distros have such installers. That way you don't need big or fast flashdrive. Downloading packages with fast internet connection will be quicker than using cheap flash memory.
Someone needs to actually try this. The only person I know of mad enough is Mr Beast but I hear he’s been out of the long, monotonous tasks game for a while now.
I think someone mentioned that they obtained windows "update floppies" for this from M$, but I'm pretty sure if you asked for windows 10 upgrade floppies the tech would get kind of salty :) (assuming of course, they haven't finally fixed that line of the EULA contract...)

Guess it would be sane to put some kind of checksum on each floppy disk, imagine getting to the end and due to floppy 1743 (well without checksums it would be impossible to know which is wrong) being corrupted getting to load every disk again
But... this isn't the traditional way the floppies were created 🙂- you need to sort them where you do not have to change floppies (files in correct order to boot etc), have the optional stuff not copied, allow drivers to be loaded, etc.
as I remember, there was a time when widows WAS installed through floppy disks... Only the booting had to be done through the floppy and the rest was done over CDs or so... thats technically installing through floppy right 😅
That's how any version of Windows NT was installed (that is, unless you started setup from DOS or booted straight off CD), but Windows 95 and 98 still had cut down versions that came entirely on floppy disks.
Theoretically, if you replace the themes and shell32 by importing them from windows 7 on windows 10, you should get the look of win7 on win10 with no programs running in the background ... Right?

You didn’t even try to hide the system clock. 15 minutes of work doesn’t seem too bad. Also the scrollbar in cmd jumps back up after you do the cut to the last couple of disks. Please try harder next time.
This video shows way too well how much crap M$ puts in Windows 10. I bet hundreds of those floppies are full of some preinstalled crap, cortana, telemetry (spyware) etc....
Windows 1.0 5 x 360kb floppies (1 1.44mb). Windows 10 2836 1.44mb floppies. Imagine just wanting to type a note on notepad is now >3000 times less efficient (in terms of CPU 286 -> i3), HDD (20mb -> 64gb) space, Memory (512kb -> 2GB)
You could have removed the other versions of windows from the wim file, which might help. And sorta makes sense. Like something disks to install the pro version bla bla.
Ender, I have an emergency. An installer that I didn’t install popped up and some thing called “SansevieriakFuture.EXE” is walking around and I can’t end it. I also see “Wallpaper manager” and “Avast remediation exe,” and none of these tasks are endable.... please help me, this laptop is brand new 😖 Avast picks it up, but doesn’t delete it!!!! This laptop also only has 4GB of memory, and stuff like this makes it burn!!!

I discovered I could copy all disks each one in a directory named disk#, where # is the ordinal of the disk and then run the setup at disk1 directory and *voila*...

You should use a real physical PC. ;-) My Lenovo ThinkCentre M57 fully supports the current 20H2 Windows 10 in 64 bit and also has a floppy connector.
And of course this remembers me back to the Windows 3.1 time where I bought MS Office 4.2 on 28 floppy disks....
To shorten the task: Try to find out a way to boot a MS-DOS LAN manager environment (the whole stuff fits on a single floppy disk) and load the base image over a NetBIOS share. You need to split it into 2 GB chunks due the MS-DOS file API limitations.

This was uploaded the day my computer won't bot up and then it takes me to automatic repair every boot and the factory reset doesn't work so I just used an USB PenDrive and installed win10 on it and then put it in my laptop, it detected it instantly and it booted up to the set up already 😳

hah, if you ever do this again, you should know that you can split off just the image you need from the wim, recompress it to LZX:90 and let dism split it, or you can compress it to ESD (smaller, LZMS Solid compression) and use your current split method.
Fun fact: box version of Windows 95 indeed had installation floppy disks and I once actually installed the OS using those floppies. They had some special 1.7 or 1.9 Mb format.

2:17 bad renaming. install.wim.124 got renamed to install364.wim because it got sorted between install.wim.1239 and 1240, which ended up as install363 and install365.wim respectively. So, the order is completely messed up. I presume you fixed this off camera? Nevertheless, interesting video!
2836 floppy images... Are you f***ing INSANE? It would've been easier with REAL floppies. It's a bit slower to read from them but swapping them is much faster. I cursed VMware's mechanism when installing Windows 1.0 from 5 floppy images.
I'm pretty sure its kinda simple, read the maximum amount of data off 1 floppy disc, write to a new .wim image, repeat for all floppy disks, probably incased in a for loop.
По-честному Windows PE тоже должен был грузиться с дискет, по условиям у нас есть только дискетный дисковод, и нет сидюка. Сети тоже нет, чтобы загрузиться по сети или хотя бы переписать файлы. Первая дискета - загрузочная MS-DOS, там лежат программы fdisk и format, чтобы создать раздел на жёстком диске, и программа переноса файлов с дискет. Это копируется во время загрузки на ram диск, как и на реальной загрузочной дискете от Windows 98, чтобы можно было менять дискеты. Потом понадобилось бы использовать несколько сотен дискет, чтобы переписать на жёсткий диск файлы Windows PE, потом пришлось бы перезагрузиться и продолжить так, как в видео показано. Нужно было бы ещё найти способ переписать из MS-DOS на жёсткий диск загрузчик Windows PE. Была программа, форматирующая дискеты в формат 1.6 Мб вместо 1,44, и эти дискеты без проблем читались везде. Этот формат как раз для установки Windows использовался, 95 и 98. Тогда число дискет уменьшилось бы примерно на 10 процентов. Формат 2.88 практически не получил распространения.

Assuming a real floppy drive doesn’t go belly up at that point, and you complete the task, then you get the joys of installing updates... via floppies.
Even if you manage to streamline it further by using the DMF format that Windows 95 used (or some other capacity that squeezed ~ 1.6 to 1.8 MB onto 1.44 format) that would still be a lot of floppies. Then there were the ultra-rare Extended Density disks and drives that formatted 2.88 MB per diskette.
Imagine just one single guy with a home made out of vokda living in the middle of russia just having ~3000 floppy disks and for every floppy disk he inserts, he drinks a shot of vodka so after 10 shots he proceeds to insert the floppy disks in at brown bear speed then he's done setting up windows 10 gulag edition. but, that guy is endermanch.
Also, can you make a program that automates the process of getting install.wim from a windows ISO, then prompting you where to put it, then later installing the Windows version of your choice from that install.wim file? Basically, installing Windows 10 from the command line all over again, but in a program.

I was installing windows 3.1 for workgroups with internet support, vga, soundblaster etc. The issue was that amd adapter driver is not compatible with Vmware, so if you don't install everything in the correct order everything will keep crashing.

0 likesYou should be able to compress it further from the WIM file. That WIM file should house multiple editions ie Home, Pro, etc, and can be compressed into an ESD file which is more compact. A lot of this can be done in the command line tool DISM.

0 likestwo things I would of done, 1) extract teh ESD file for the edition you need, 2) format the 3.5" floppy to DMF. Additional non-standard formats: 1.72MB and 1.68MB DMF (3.5 inch disks). The DMF (1.68MB) format is often used for distribution floppies under Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000. I forgot the tool name but I got a DOS program to format to different sizes.

0 likesI once had a laptop with Windows 95 on it. I spent a great deal of time upgrading it to Windows 98SE by means of floppy disks because.. well.. I wasn't going to pay for the floppies at the time when I had a perfectly good version on my PC. Back in those days they left the original setup files right there on the drive for you to reinstall or copy.. 30 some odd floppies and hours later and decompression thanks to WinRAR, it was worth it. Could never imagine doing what you did on real hardware. I constantly had to recopy some floppies and toss out ones that had died. Oh God, to see that end part, you must have no life. I feel the same way.

fun fact: the floppy disks that support the 1,44 megabytes thingie are very large, like 13 centimeters i think. The ones that support 720 kylobytes or 360 kylobytes are smaller

0 likesYou're just nuts. I remember it being bad enough to install Windows 95 with floppies but using nearly 3,000 disks for Win 10 goes beyond crazy. I love this video but can you imagine doing this on ACTUAL hardware, not using a VM or disk images. The safest way would be to have a pack of around 10 to 20 disks to hand, so that while the install is using one handful of disks, you can be writing the next images onto the disks. Or you could have every single one of those 2,836 disks and a ton of patience.

0 likes1) Use DOS RAR on DOS 7 or similar to get it to a FAT32 partition and then boot it via UEFI
2) Use some floppy-based Linux distro to get it to a second hard disk and use ms-sys.sourceforge.net to make it bootable.
Once you have booted PE from floppies only, the rest is "just tedious" (no real challenges left in my opinion).

2 likesПо-честному Windows PE тоже должен был грузиться с дискет, по условиям у нас есть только дискетный дисковод, и нет сидюка. Сети тоже нет, чтобы загрузиться по сети или хотя бы переписать файлы.
0 likesПервая дискета - загрузочная MS-DOS, там лежат программы fdisk и format, чтобы создать раздел на жёстком диске, и программа переноса файлов с дискет. Это копируется во время загрузки на ram диск, как и на реальной загрузочной дискете от Windows 98, чтобы можно было менять дискеты.
Потом понадобилось бы использовать несколько сотен дискет, чтобы переписать на жёсткий диск файлы Windows PE, потом пришлось бы перезагрузиться и продолжить так, как в видео показано. Нужно было бы ещё найти способ переписать из MS-DOS на жёсткий диск загрузчик Windows PE.
Была программа, форматирующая дискеты в формат 1.6 Мб вместо 1,44, и эти дискеты без проблем читались везде. Этот формат как раз для установки Windows использовался, 95 и 98. Тогда число дискет уменьшилось бы примерно на 10 процентов.
Формат 2.88 практически не получил распространения.

I was installing windows 3.1 for workgroups with internet support, vga, soundblaster etc. The issue was that amd adapter driver is not compatible with Vmware, so if you don't install everything in the correct order everything will keep crashing.
