Oh God, MeiAIDS. I associated him with barely censored furry porn when I watched him at the time and he pushed the limits as to what was acceptable in his poops even in 2008 YouTube. Him, Squirrelous, and Krobo were not afraid of using flatout eroge CG in their videos. Some of his old accounts and videos are still around somehow.

Speaking of that era in YTP, someone needs to document the story of how a YTP called 'Dragonforce' by kiz038 managed to garner the most video responses out of any video on youtube.

I actually have a lot of experience with MLG and I think it has a great history to it. Some of my favorite youtubers produce in a style with MLG DNA like Podel, (Formerly blazinscrubz) shibenation (formerly solidshibe) and Pyrocyinical. Some techniques are dead giveaways for MLG people.

7:35 That did happen recently, although it wasn't YouTube themselves, but one of their ad networks. They got hacked by a security firm called mine-something, who frequently hack sites to show why they need their services, and hundreds of YouTubers got the titles of every single one of their videos changed to the same thing. It didn't affect any really big channels though, which is why you might not have heard about it.

God, I miss late-2000s YouTube. What a Wild West it was.

I think this is why I love these kind of videos so much they gave me insight into things i would have never known about

story time ladies and gents. when i was a kid (9), i had a friend named Andrew. Andrew and i were obsessed with YouTube and “making it big” and we tried our best to produce the highest quality content that we could (from a 9 and 12 year old, you can probably imagine that it was about as good as a porcupine sponge bath). early December of 2009 (maybe 3rd or 4th) rolled around and i remember Andrew coming home from school and telling me that he heard that somebody was planning to hack YouTube later in the month, to which i brushed off as another one of his stories, always involving goats (he was a weird kid, that’s all i can say). but this time was different because he had proof, and he showed me a video of MeiAIDS hacking YT. that video is real and i saw it, and i know i saw it because i remember the distinct look of satisfaction on Andrew’s face. Andrew and i have since lost contact and he is merely a childhood companion now, but that video does exist, somewhere. and Andrew, if you’re out there, we had a good run and you were the best production partner a 9 year old could’ve ever asked for. godspeed.

I really forgot all about this. I remember being around at the time this went down, watching videos of people explaining what happened and thinking it was some kind of big prank. Like a bunch of big youtubers all decided to join together and change their profile pics to some asian dude just for the lols. Wow I was a stupid kid.

MeiAids probably won’t ever return to making YouTube content or any further trolling, simply because he has grown out of it. When he closed the Tobysaidit account he was 18 (according to him), thus making his age now about 29 or 30.

I remember trying to keep up with his accounts back in the day by subbing to whatever new one popped up, and the moment I saw those thumbnails around then I knew it was him thanks to the images used. Back then YTP creators were probably the only people I ever subscribed to.

As much as he was bad, I kind of respect meiaids. He didn't let the internet control him, he controlled the internet. Well, that's what I thought until halfway in the video.

I encountered him in the wild recently. It was extremely surreal. Posted about it on the subreddit. I was in a discussion in the comments of a clip of SrPelo saying the n word on stream, suddenly the thumbnail changes to an HD Mei and the title is "say my name and win a prize". When I said "MeiAIDS??" the title changed again to "hahahahaha I'm done with this" and went back to normal, before the video was removed for violating guidelines. It was really weird looking back. Maybe some kind of impostor or the uploader fucking with people? I'd totally forgotten that happened until rewatching this

I remember when this happened. Stuart K. Reilly (YoutubePoopNews) mentioned it on one of his news videos. Naive teenage myself at the time thought he was going for my channel next so I blocked MeiAids thinking this will stop him. Those were weird and scary times.

I do remember this happening (though I forgot that it did happen, until this video's thumbnail popped up). I think at some point I was able to pick up that it was a slightly widespread thumbnail hacking, but the biggest thing I picked up was an increased interest in Sanrio and Onegai My Melody...

Thanks to these thumbnails, I ended up watching the whole series, and gaining an increased interest in Japanese culture and cuteness in general. Watch the anime, and you'll eventually see just how precious Piano-chan is. <3 Though I might say she's more of a sheep than a goat.

So I guess he ended up advertising the anime and Sanrio pretty well! (I might actually go back to that series - it could help me continue my Japanese-learning quest!)

You're storytelling reminds me of something from a Hey Arnold episode. Idk why but if Hey Arnold was set in modern times I feel as if there could be an episode where Gerald tells the urban internet legend of MEI AIDS and how he got away with what he did and vanished forever. Then at the end of the episode MeiAIDS meets Arnold in real life and tells him why he did what he did and how he left that life to start a family or something. The episode would be something in the vain of the Stoop Kid or Pigeon Man episodes.

I was waiting for a video like this one as I feel that the Great Thumbnail Hack back in Xmas 2009 is an overlooked event in YTP History.

Pretty well compiled, I can confirm that it was the real MeiAIDS the person behind the Copyright Strikes back in late 2010 early 2011 as I was the person behind the Channel MeiAIDS MEMORIAL (also the one who provided most of the Re-Uploads to MaiAIDZ, the current re-upload account) and at the time he got back at me and basically announced, in a fairly salty fashion, the imminent demise of the Memorial channel I opened not too long before. I can also confirm that he is still lurking indeed, back in 2016 they started uploading some of his new/old YTPs along with Yo-Kai Watch related content on one of his old hidden 2009 account called lazordude95 or something like that, thankfully I managed to save said YTPs.

He always was like this, closing and opening new Channels constantly, I am guilty of that too tbh but those days are thankfully over, I remember one time he made a channel for the sole purpose of uploading Panty & Stockings OST, but being MeiAIDS every single video, which looked quite legit I might add, was a weird shitposting tier mashup, it was quite the successful trollage! It was banned quickly sadly. I could be here all day talking about the crazy antics of this deranged individual but I better stop now.

Ah btw afaik Toby is not MeiAIDS at all, he is just one of his ''clones'' trying to cause confusion taking what was essentially a well known name at the time during the Thumbnail Hack. One last thing and I'm done: MeiAIDS is also responsible for the ''Cory is the Best Anime'' Meme, although indirectly, thanks to one of his old Trap Videos from 2007.

Back when i was into YTP in 2009-2010 I always wondered why Mei was a meme. didn’t realize it was from mostly Finnish ppl tho. That was right before I stopped watching YTP when it became earrape bullshit. But that’s also how I first discovered Arashi no Yoru Ni.
Also Freddy Ruins Sam’s Life is my favorite YTP.

Old YouTube hits me in the nostalgia so hard. I was only 11 when this all happened but I still remember it so well. Good times.

The pink sheep named "Piano-chan" is also from Sanrio. The same company that brought us Hello Kitty. Piano (aka My Sweet Piano) is also from the My Melody series (And one of My Melody's best friends) and the screenshots were taken from the Onegai My Melody anime series from 2005-2006. Don't ask, I'm a huge fan of Sanrio. Also the reason why Piano has a heart stamp on her chest is because My Melody summoned her with her magic Melody wand and says "Melody Mark!" which can either summon or make anything sentient. You need to see the anime to understand what I'm talking about.

I remember after the hacking incident, there were a few YTPMV and remixes that sampled Piano's bleating noises and set them to various music (Basically the predecessor to the Nigel Thornberry remixes). To bad those remixes are hard to find and possibly been removed. I remember the various Piano-chan remixes were adorable and funny at the same time. I remember one remix featured a duet between Piano and Gwonam.

The pink goat in the thumbnails shown and mentioned in this video and the name "Mei" seem familiar, but oddly enough I don't remember this event happening. I think it may have something to do with me being a small child at the time; I was 9 years old when this event happened, so I was probably too busy opening Christmas presents and spending time with my family to pay attention to some weird thing happening on YouTube.

Oddly enough, I've actually always been into YouTube Poops since around 2008 or 2009 (maybe 2007, I don't exactly remember when I first discovered YouTube Poop), and to this day I plan on becoming a YouTube Pooper myself.

I do remember a few years ago idubbz and a few other channels I was following at the time had a few thumbnails changed but it didn't really receive much attention, I vaguely remember the pink goat on a few thumbnails in the early days too, but I was a kid so I didn't really understand what had happened and forgot about it, I mostly just watched what my older brothers did back then anyway.

MeiAIDS, the youtube legend you've never heard of

Great video EmpLemon! I really appreciate these kinds of videos; there really isn't a lot of quality resources on internet culture and your videos are quite good.

MeiAIDS reminds me a bit of a troll that existed back around 2012 named Richard Butten. At his height, he was getting a fair bit of backlash for claiming he would get popular channels shut down for "offending him and his daughter", including 3 youtube channels created exclusively to mock him (only one still exists, you'll find it if you search "Richard Butten" on youtube. It has two videos claiming he's a pedophile), and the one video he had on his channel had over 10k dislikes and thousands of angry comments.

With all that effort put into the backlash against him, I find it astonishing that there's almost no trace of his existence left. I remember keeping up with it back then just to laugh at the chaos (and maybe participate a little too, who can blame me, I was a teenager), but now like you mentioned in your video, it seems like it all was just a dream. I'm sure you feel the same about Mei here. It's great to see some attention being brought to these things so that they don't all just fade into complete obscurity. Thank you.

Back when work, play, politics and privacy were 4 completely different things that never crossed over. Now you hear all sorts of stories about people being fired for having so much as the wrong opinion in their own time. Posting unsavory things to their personal social media accounts. Virtue-signalling their ideology across all channels and equating apathy with disapproval. How I long for the days of old to return!

Those reading this without experience will never truly know what it was like in the early Web 2.0 era; you really did have to be there to witness it. It's not like how with past decades you can more or less relive the best parts with today's technology, poops from that time which haven't been mercilessly deleted have become nigh-on unwatchable aside from nostalgia purposes. What took days or even weeks back then now takes a matter of hours at most. Amateur video editing has progressed that far forward and today's audience expects that much more.

Though I am one to talk; ironically I was completely off the internet aside from school from November 2008 - February 2010 due to being too poor to afford a replacement computer for my busted desktop so I missed the entire year this happened. The only thing I remember from this fiasco were the few lingering thumbnails that persisted in its wake. This was, from what I gather, the last hurrah of a now long-bygone era. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't kinda pissed I missed it by that much.
