@@JimAntonopoulos Tehnically it is as Verizon owns AOL that owns the Netscape trademark, but they don't really own the web browser itself, only its name.
I feel like if you're going to have a browser named after something as legendary as Netscape, you should at least have the decency to not use Chromium as its base.
Making your own browser is incredibly difficult in this day and age. There's literally hundreds of pages of standards you need to work with if you want things to function. There's a pretty good reason all new browsers bar a handful are chromium.
AOL actually shipped a "Netscape Navigator 9" in 2007 that was basically a reskin of Firefox 2. Before that, they were based on Mozilla Suite, itself basically descended from the commercial Netscape Communicator (4.x) source code but with the rendering engine modernized into Gecko.
@@oCMSo firefox is definitely not broken. Some lazy web developers test their site only against the most popular browser (once it was IE, than FF, now it's Chrome). Different browsers handle HTML, JS, CSS differently, so if you develop with only one browser in mind you risk to break your site for the other browsers. When I was a web developer I made the same mistake, I tested only Firefox and my web application didn't work properly with Chrome.
@@und4287 It is not entirely harder to develop for Firefox. They could have used added extensions and userChrome. Some good examples are Zen Browser(which is it's own browser), Geckium(which is a userscript and a few file replacements), and others.
@ChocoRainbowCorn I still remember the day my PC's Edge switched to Chromium. My browsing immediately got slower vs with Spartan Edge.
I did hear Firefox is mainly worse at dealing with many tabs, but it was problematic for me regardless, so I may need to buy more RAM eventually (my laptop has 8GB).
The actual worst part though is that they took away the ability to save sessions with one button press and on demand (session save after closing doesn't count). I was hoping that Microsoft would restore it eventually, but sadly that never came. The closest I have to this option is via the Session Manager plug-in and at that point I might just as well use Firefox.
@@mix3k818 Isn't Firefox known for using more memory than Chrome or Chromium though? Aside from that, I respect a different take. But also yes, I too, do wish that Microsoft didn't give up on old Edge. It's always better to have more choices than less.
@@ChocoRainbowCorn For most people, maybe, but for me Chromium by itself is bad. Even ignoring the monopoly set by Google, the whole thing is slow and memory inefficient vs Firefox. The only reason why I haven't switched yet from modern Edge is because transferring passwords and browser history is impossible via official methods. (In case you couldn't tell, I do miss the old Edge and I find it a shame that the world deprecated it so quickly)
Most people still consider Firefox as the true successor to NetScape, so I think you can see why people look at the fact weird.
Chromium isn't that bad though, even if we consider that Google is the one in most control of the source code. Edge is a decent browser, even though I don't use it myself, and there are plenty others.
IIRC the last versions of Netscape were based on the Mozilla Suite (and later, Firefox). So I guess they could have used the FF engine, but maybe it's somehow harder to develop for? Idk.

I used Netscape 0.9 a beta version back in 1994. Actually I was an Alpha tester of ARPANET (forerunner of Internet) back in 1969 when I was in High school sending an e-mail using a Telex machine hooked up to an acoustic modem using a telephone handset. I still get my Internet through a land-line phone. Who needs a cell phone? I would rather have a desktop PC with 2 monitors.

If they wanted to be more authentic to Netscape Navigator, they should have forked Mozilla Firefox. Firefox is an indirect successor to Navigator, so there is metaphorical blood there. In fact, the "firefox" name was originally used as a codename for one of Netscapes other projects, which I believe was a web browser and email suite combo.
My pedantic nature is kicking in with this too. They are calling this browser "Netscape" when the company was called Netscape, the browser was called Navigator, the same as Microsoft's old Internet Explorer isnt just simply called "Internet" or "Microsoft Web Browser".
It's actually exist and called "Ladybird browser" that made purely from scratch without any source code from either Chromium or Firefox or WebKit. But it's not available for public yet, as the very first early alpha release will come as early as mid-late 2026
Netscape used to be dang good. The only reason internet explorer beat it was. Well. Because there is no competing with free. Netscape used to cost money, all browsers used to. And it's weird to think about. ..It's sorta weird that browsers are all free now. They are hugely important and powerful tools. And we get them for free.

Never thought Netscape was owned by AOL, but it makes sense in hindsight considering how both were designed around the same time for getting connected onto the internet
The Chromium installer padding is usually bigger because of the DPI being lower. The DPI for the virtual machine is clearly higher, and the font on the installer is bigger as a result.
Tried installing this browser on a VM and Chrome after that, when Chrome opened I got a pop up saying that the "Search and New Tab by AOL" got added by another program.
Verizon is not just the largest (and most expensive) US mobile network owner, they have an actual monopoly on the "backhaul" service that connects mobile towers to each other and the wired phone and internet networks, which gives them incredible sway over all mobile services in the US
Sounds like the US equivalent of the Norwegian state owned (majority share) Telenor. They used to have some market share in Eastern Europe, but appears to have existed that market recently.
2:31 for context why it shows Verizon's privacy policy and ToS is most likely due to the fact that not too long ago, Verizon Communications actually owned AOL
I find it interesting they used the 32bit version of chromium as a base. I guess they are targeting people that are running on older machines or they couldn't be bothered to do two builds, one for x86 and another for x86_64. But it means potentially it could perform worse than chrome.

She mostly switched away, but my mom still uses the AOL email account she set up in the 90s for a few things. In the late 00s, as dialup was in its last throes, AOL tried holding onto revenue by charging people to keep using email addresses they had used for years, the custom browser, chat rooms etc. I had to convince my mama that she could keep using her email address through their webmail without paying the $15/month or whatever bull they wanted for it was, on top of her cable internet. It just connected the IE based AOL browser and email client over IP instead of dialup! I guess this is almost the same thing, except they sell your data instead of charging money.
In the Chromium fork scene, you have two kinds of forks: - The ones that wants to serve a legitimate purpose like Brave, Vivaldi, Supermium, ... - And the others that just want to take you for a fool.
Alas, AOL has been advertising junkware in with their products since the late 2000s, good to see that hasn't changed much. Ever since AIM shut down and their chat rooms disappeared from AOL Desktop Gold (their current desktop client for the remaining AOL subscribers), AOL is practically on life support, so they keep advertising even more blatant junkware to stay alive.
The only true successor to Netscape is Firefox. The Mozilla Suite (the predecessor of Firefox) had the code base of Netscape. It was the same product. And Firefox was created from that.
Couldn't they let the name rest in peace? As someone who loved the original browser before Microsoft bullied it out of business, this is just so sad. Hopefully this fails and goes away quickly.
I actually have Netscape Navigator 9 installed on my computer. It's the last version before it got discontinued back in '08 and it's so out of date I can't use it to browse the web because the security patches aren't recognized. I just keep it for nostalgia and I smile whenever I see the icon. I consider the smile worth the space it takes up on my hard drive.
The outdated marketing of that AOL shield thing, with the super old chromium design and the old logos makes me think this chromium Netscape has been around for a long time
I remember in the early 90s when Netscape was the go-to browser. Microsoft was at war with Netscape, even going so far as to add code to Windows that prevented Netscape from being installed. Microsoft got into a lot of trouble with the US government over hostile practices. Microsoft was ordered to remove the code and open up Windows. Back in the day, Microsoft wanted to be the only computer software company.
The reason it asked for a reboot is you had Netscape open and it shares directories and files thus preventing full deletion. In that situation a task is scheduled to be run on reboot since the app will be closed.
I just woke up from a nightmare where I ran this in a VM, it breached containment, and I got a nasty ransomware. I'm going to take that as a bad omen and just not lol.
Maybe I can shed some light on this. AOL's bread and butter for the last couple of decades has been appealing to and hand-holding people who are not tech-savvy and of course charging them for this, "AOL Shield" for example. Way back in the day the AOL desktop software had a built-in browser so you could open the web from directly within it. Originally they used Internet Explorer. At some point around the late 90s/early 2000s (IIRC) they purchased Netscape and ditched IE in favor of it. They made a BIG deal about this and splashed the Netscape logo everywhere. It was also displayed in various areas of the desktop client. So what you likely have here is AOL hopping on the Chromium bandwagon and throwing in the Netscape logo to look familiar to users of their desktop software (which was renamed AOL Gold and now carries a MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION FEE despite requiring you to bring your own separate ISP service to use it.) So this "new" browser, shady? Well, as far as AOL's typical behavior is kind of shady to begin with anyway, but I don't think it's malicious or malware.
Also, side note: IE didn't beat Netscape just because it started being preinstalled with Windows. It actually started doing that before because previously browsers were not free software. They were paid software. Imagine downloading Chrome and when you started to install it you got a box asking for your serial key you purchased from Google for $40. Yeah, that's how browsers used to be. I know at least one had an ad-supported option (Opera) where if you didn't pay it displayed a very large banner ad across the navigation buttons. I dealt with that back in the day, it was annoying. Until I found a working keygen ;) Don't blame me I was a teenager without a lot of money to blow on random stuff. But anyway Microsoft decided to release their new browser completely free of charge, which was seen as a revolutionary and crazy idea. And BAM, nearly instant market domination. It later being bundled with Windows just cemented its win against other browsers but by that time they already had the majority of the market.
we had Netscape navigator preinstalled on our computer growing up. I used it a couple of times but I used Internet explorer most of the time and found no need to keep Netscape on the computer.
The OG Netscape got the last laugh over IE when IE became known as "that thing you use to download Firefox" (Firefox being based on the Netscape code).
AOL and Netscape used to be good names and browsers in the computer industry now they are crappy chromium forks that only changed the branding... what has happened to this world
I remember Netscape from the 90s, its downfall and the rise of Firefox. That its name would resurface now as a lousy chrome fork is a real joke and whoever thought that up should be ashamed of themselves... The "real" Netscape lives on in Firefox and its forks, and I really hope that Mozilla can win back a bigger slice of the browser market after all the crap Google has been pulling with Chrome/Chromium (manifest v3...).
But wasn't Firefox the new version of Netscape? Like, netscape's code became open source and that's where Firefox came from - it's the best and most well-supported fork of Netscape's code
are you planning on creating a Q&A? If yes, I have 2 questions: what was you're first programming language that you learned, when did you start programming
I don't think that it was made by the same devs of the original netscape, it seems that some random just slapped the netscape logo on a cromium engine and called it netscape, if you want to have a browser that looks like netscape there's pale moon wich is a mod for firefox
Edge started as its own engine while the latest version of Internet Explorer was still kept around for compatibility reasons. It didn't start as a Chromium mod.
All they did is switch search engine, logo and name and to top it all out the logo isn't even assigned when you open the browser, it's just a blank document
All of those company names basically boil down to the numerous sales that AOL and Yahoo have been a part of over the years. The SentryBay connection seems to be only that they developed the security tools bundled into the fork; they're a legitimate enterprise IT security company focusing on hybrid and remote working environments. Honestly, bundling is nothing new for the AOL brand; they've been doing that since the 90's. Netscape did it quite a bit, too, in their later years.
Yeah, if it was a Firefox clone with the original branding, I would at least consider installing it. With it being a Chromium clone though, I don't think I will.
The fact that they have like 8 years worth of older corporate names scattered all over this pretty much confirms it's a low effort reskin meant to leech off the name, most likely trying to cash in off the current wave of '90s nostalgia.

It serves as a cornerstone for many mathematical operations and properties.
In arithmetic, 1 is known as the multiplicative identity, meaning that any number multiplied by 1 remains unchanged. For example, . This property makes it crucial in algebra and higher mathematics, where maintaining the integrity of equations and expressions is essential.
From a symbolic perspective, 1 is often associated with concepts of unity, individuality, or a starting point. In binary systems used in computing, it plays a key role as one of only two digits (0 and 1), forming the foundation for all digital computations.
In geometry, a unit length or a basic measurement is often represented as 1. In set theory, a set with exactly one element is said to have a cardinality of 1.
Culturally and philosophically, the number 1 has been seen as a symbol of wholeness, the origin of all things, or a singular entity that forms the basis of complex systems. It holds significance in religious texts, where it can signify unity or the divine.

any time some shitbag company tries to shove something with an old name down your throat in the stupid modern age, its a scam. its garbage and they're looking to swipe some money off of you by fooling you into going "oh i remember that". if the things that aren't merely pre-garbage are ever coming back to this fucking 2010s wasteland shithole of bleak colorless faux-minimalism, they're not going to advertise on nostalgia and its going to come from something local or regional, NEVER a national-size corporation. but also, if its some idiot with a 3d printer who thinks he can change the world, don't believe him either because 3d printing is a prototyping technology and anyone passing what's made with it as a finished product is also a grifter. turns out we like the old stuff because the new stuff sucks ass and doesn't meet our needs. corporations don't care. learn to actually determine what it is you want out of the things in your life and stop giving the things that don't give you want you want space in your life "just because".
Netscape was awesome but you had to install a bunch of extra programs just for websites to display correctly and some of those programs had a fee and Netscape wasn’t free and of course it was built from Mosaic the first web browser that was shipped with ISPs like AOL and Compuserve and others.
Hi Verizon is two companies. The first company is a wireless cellular company or yes you can get an iPhone from them and you can run your phone your iPhone on Verizon. The second company is Verizon FiOS, which is what I have. It is a fiber company I wouldn’t say cable company, but a fiber company you can say cable company and traditional TV phone Internet Company. It’s another one of those. I don’t know if you know this time warner cable or spectrum cable is a cable company that offers used to offer home phone Internet and TV but I think they moved away from home phone and they now do spectrum mobile so they still have telephone services but they have Cellular services not plug your phone into the phone jack in the wall in your kitchen anymore like they used to. So Verizon again is a phone/fiber company so they are all legitimate business. I have them and I love their fiber service their Verizon FiOS driver services. I’ve had no complaints with them. I’ve had one outage since I’ve had them and they’ve never dropped service compared to spectrum which constantly drop service and I constantly had to reset my router
"You traded my online security for a shitty retro browser!" "Not just any retro browser. Netscape Navigator. Remember Netscape? It's back, in chromium form."
Verizon Media was acquired by Apollo Global Management in 2021. Idk what you have going on here. Yahoo is also involved—at least the trademark and other patents.
Oath Inc, is what AOL was renamed to when Verizon merged it with Yahoo in 2017. It was renamed a few years later as Verizon media. Verizon sold the company and renamed it to Yahoo in 2021.
It looks like Sentry Bay are the ones actually responsible for developing the modern "Netscape" or should it be "Notscape" browser for AOL/Yahoo.
Man, Verizon has over 100 billion dollars, they could've afforded to build a whole new browser from nothing, yet they chose to make crap. They could've built something to include by default on all their phones, if they did it right they might've even been praised for it.
Step 1. Download Outdated Google Chrome Version Step 2. Download Netscape Navigator Icon Step 3. Rename the Chrome shortcut on the desktop to Netscape and change the icon to the one you downloaded. Step 4. Launch "Netscape" and change search engine and homepage to AOL Step 5. ???? Step 6. Profit
Where did you get this? I don't see any links to download Netscape at AOL. AOL Shield claims to be "optimized for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections"
If you want a nostalgic browser that looks like something from the early 2000s, install pale moon, it's open source and firefox based.
Otherwise, don't, the browser fingerprint of pale moon will stick out like a sore thumb. Absolutely a usable web browser, I have used it, it's pretty nice and retro looking. But it's not optimal for privacy. Still better than something like Google Chrome by a lot.
btw, i found out something about "bypassnro". The "command" you run in the command prompt.
Apparently, it is stored in system32 even before windows asks you to create a MS account, and upon closer inspection in wordpad, i found out that the "command" is pretty much a batch file, which adds the following registry key "bypassNRO" in the registry, sets it to 1, and reboots the computer.
The path is basically this: "HKLM (LM stands for local machine) > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > OOBE".
At least i think i wrote the path correctly.
You don't even to reboot the computer, since adding that 32 bit key and setting it to 1, will skip creation of the MS account on OOBE, if you turn off your internet lol.

0 likes@@oCMSo firefox is definitely not broken.

0 likes@ChocoRainbowCorn I still remember the day my PC's Edge switched to Chromium. My browsing immediately got slower vs with Spartan Edge.
5 likesI did hear Firefox is mainly worse at dealing with many tabs, but it was problematic for me regardless, so I may need to buy more RAM eventually (my laptop has 8GB).
7 likes@@ChocoRainbowCorn For most people, maybe, but for me Chromium by itself is bad.
14 likesMost people still consider Firefox as the true successor to NetScape, so I think you can see why people look at the fact weird.

9 likesMy pedantic nature is kicking in with this too. They are calling this browser "Netscape" when the company was called Netscape, the browser was called Navigator, the same as Microsoft's old Internet Explorer isnt just simply called "Internet" or "Microsoft Web Browser".
If this browser had a different look, a different name, a different branding, a different engine and a different installer, it could've gone hard. 🔥

3 likesShe mostly switched away, but my mom still uses the AOL email account she set up in the 90s for a few things.
0 likesIn the Chromium fork scene, you have two kinds of forks:
1 like- The ones that wants to serve a legitimate purpose like Brave, Vivaldi, Supermium, ...

1 likeI remember in the early 90s when Netscape was the go-to browser.
1 likeFirefox evolved from Netscape. At least make it Gecko based!
4 likesThe reason it asked for a reboot is you had Netscape open and it shares directories and files thus preventing full deletion. In that situation a task is scheduled to be run on reboot since the app will be closed.

1 like4:06 OH MY, ENDERMAN IS LITHUANIAN 🗣️ 🔥 🇱🇹
1 likeMaybe I can shed some light on this.
1 likeReplies (1)
1 likeThey should rebrand as Netscrap, Netscrape, or Netscam. Or they could also try Gecko…

It represents a single unit, often viewed as the first and smallest positive integer in the sequence of natural numbers: 1, 2, 3, and so on. It serves as a cornerstone for many mathematical operations and properties.
1 likeIn arithmetic, 1 is known as the multiplicative identity, meaning that any number multiplied by 1 remains unchanged.

0 likesHi Verizon is two companies.

0 likesFun fact about AOL and Yahoo, they both currently offer 1TB of email space!
0 likesDon't download AOL Browser in 2024 they collect your sensitive personal information and aren't afraid to admit it.
0 likesAbout what's requiring a reboot - maybe have a look in the registry under PendingFileRenameOperations?
0 likesLesson of the day: Use Firefox.
1 likeIf you want a nostalgic browser that looks like something from the early 2000s, install pale moon, it's open source and firefox based.
0 likesOtherwise, don't, the browser fingerprint of pale moon will stick out like a sore thumb. Absolutely a usable web browser, I have used it, it's pretty nice and retro looking. But it's not optimal for privacy. Still better than something like Google Chrome by a lot.
Try to Unsinstall it with Revo Uninstaller. He clears also whats leftover. Would be nice to see where this is creeping in some hidden areas.

0 likesJust like webdiscover, they once again use chromium to make malware/adware
0 likesoooo boy cant wait to see hijacked versions of the 4 different browsers filled to the brim with malware, and ad ware.

see, this is why i use Mozilla Firefox.
0 likesi use it so that i can stay secure and not deal with crapware
btw, i found out something about "bypassnro". The "command" you run in the command prompt.
0 likesApparently, it is stored in system32 even before windows asks you to create a MS account, and upon closer inspection in wordpad, i found out that the "command" is pretty much a batch file, which adds the following registry key "bypassNRO" in the registry, sets it to 1, and reboots the computer.
The path is basically this: "HKLM (LM stands for local machine) > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > OOBE".
At least i think i wrote the path correctly.
You don't even to reboot the computer, since adding that 32 bit key and setting it to 1, will skip creation of the MS account on OOBE, if you turn off your internet lol.
this is why ned's cape is better
0 likesshitty chromium is real
0 likeswhats next? internet explorer comin back as a money laundering scheme??
0 likesChrome has been reskinned so many times that it's saddening, take the "revolutionary" CryptoTab Browser, it's just Chrome with some extensions, and it even mentions it in certain websites that check your browser.
0 likesOriginal Netscape code -> Firefox
0 likes"Netscape" name -> Chrome
😭
Oh and I remember when I once used yahoo search and it gave me a virus
FYI: Yahoo, Aol, Oath and Verizon Media are all the same company.
0 likesi hope you do a scan on this so we know how much of a virus it is
0 likesyahoo!ly shit
0 likes>new browser release
1 like>take a look inside
>chromium
seems like this'll be a trend for a looooong while. its always just overglorified chromium reskin, nothing new.
The reason why it shows Verizon Media is because Netscape is owned by AOL, which is owned by Yahoo!, which is owned by Verizon Media.

FYI Verizon Media is not owned by Verizon anymore.
