This song always gets twisted into some arrogance-filled, entitled chant by the worst of the fans. But I've always found it quite lovely in its core sentiments. It's about dusting yourself off when you fail, still loving your team even when they lose, never giving up hope and appreciating the stand out moments. That feeling when a great goal happens and reminiscing about it etc. It's what football's all about. Or should be anyway. Unfortunately football really brings out the worst in some people...
Exactly. People often forget that the song is a joke, it was written by comedians and has a very ironic edge to it. Its like, we know we're shit and haven't won in forever but we still love our team and the game despite everything. Its about hopeless optimism and rooting for the underdog. I hate how its been turned into this egocentric thing it wasn't supposed to be
@yoyoyo As a weird American who doesn't care about sports but loves music, comedy, and English people, I think this song is the essence of Englishness.
I found this video when I was in a really dark place, and dodie's soothing yet uplifting cover was perfect for me, even though I'm not english and don't care about football. The first lines and "but I know they can play", and how dodie sings them, were just so personally motivating/gave me hope and courage when I was so depressed and down on myself
Hey, you won the last world war (which in my opinion was way more important than any sporting events, but it also might have been more than 30 years ago). Thanks for removing our nazi government by the way ;)
Italy really did just come through and won the EU football cup and eurovision songcontests. something for the straights and for the gays, we love to see it!
They 100% deserved the win, the British were absolutely awful with the booing and taking off their medals, such disrespect and so unsportsmanlike! Good for Italy!
@heather_ if we're talking unsportsmanlike that foul where the Italy captain yanked Saka back by the neck of the shirt should've been an automatic red card and the amount of kicking/ pulling/ shoving/ diving Italy were doing was ridiculous. I really don't blame the England players for looking annoyed and removing their medals when Italy played as dirty as they did, especially in the later part of the first half
@heather_imagine talking about unsportsmanship from the england team when Italy played that dirty...that's ironic. The England team have been a class act from start to finish. You can criticize the fans, but not the team that's just low
@Fatal Immortality The English were just as bad, not just to the final but also to the teams they played along the way. The English set the standard and the Italians played to it.
@heather_ you cant compare sterling diving to someone actually being yanked by the shirt that's absurd. The England team have been so admirable, what with making a really strong statement against racial abuse in football by kneeling and refusing to back down under media pressure. The fans are a reflection of the team? You clearly don't know anything about the england team because of how bullshit that statement is
@yoyoyo You think a yanking of a t-shirt should have been a red card?? Lmao, honey, in what world do you live? England play well, but in the end the Azzurri were the superior team, more cohesive and with smart playing.
I don’t know much about sports but watching football with friends sounds like a load of fun..I hope you’re getting through your quarantine with good vibes :)
@em This is a painfull overgeneralization. A lot of people watch football with mates without any domestic violence. Like the majority of people who watch football do so without hurting anyone at all.
@kylian schalembier and not the majority. Every public football event ive seen has ended with verbal and physical fights. Straight men just cannot control their emotions, theyre far too aggressive about it
@em It's not that simple. If one fifth of men were fans of England you'd have an army of 5 million people who wanted to destroy the nation. I can tell you if 5 million people rose up, no police would be able to just stop them. Yet here we are, England still exists.
You are talking about a minority of people who do really bad stuff to justify hating on an entire group of people. If you did this to a group of color instead of sex you'd be racist. If you did this to women instead of men you'd be sexist. If you did this to gay people instead of straight ones you'd be homophobic. and yet here you are proudly speaking your truth.
It's not sad it's hopeful. Talking about how people typically say that England won't be able to do it but we all still believe and have faith that they can.
Yes yes yes, it's never been a boastful or arrogant song. It's a song of hope and dreams, despite all the past failures we still have hope but unfortunately all the rest of the world hears is Its Coming Home and think we're saying we invented it, it's our game, it belongs here. Unfortunately the rest of the world don't hear the irony of the lyrics.
Man, this is critically underviewed. Honestly a beautiful reimagining of this song, esspecially with the post-match backing vocals. Such a reinvention of something that's been taken over by lowlifes. Thanks for this. It's beautiful in such a strange way :)
if you listen to Baddiel and Skinner who wrote it they say themselves it's more about hope and the agony that comes with that hope than football or winning so pretty spot on
Really well played match, intense until the very end. Here in Italy it's just pure chaos down every road of every single city, and I wouldn't have been surprised if it was England the winner, it was an intense battle
1:08 - "...that tackle by Moore, and when Lineker scored..." I don't know why but that was such a satisfying line when heard with harmonies. Lovely as always dodie :)
"Tears for heroes dressed in grey..." Something even more melancholy about the 96 re-release. Beautiful opening line, echoes of soldiers. Brave men in the most drab, desaturated colour
I've just recently moved to england, so this has been my first big football event. I've not been in the spirit (because I hate sports) but this made me feel so nostalgic??? as if this has been something throughout my entire life, but in reality it hasn't
I really thought it was some indie song about repressed male emotions I also thought she was saying "Three lines on a shirt" and I wondered what inspirational t-shirt quote could have awakened this man's repressed emotions after 30 years of pain
This cover is so beautiful, and I don’t even have connection to the song cuz I‘m not British. You somehow managed to make this extremely overplayed song (yes, even here in Germany!) sound fresh and interesting, you never cease to amaze me! Depending on how you look at it, it’s either happy and full of hope, or sad with a look back at the disappointing past…
I actually don’t like the original song, I find it quite annoying, but I love this cover, you made a song I don’t like sound so nice, that rarely happens with me, thankiesss 😂
I know nothing about football and I’m an American (I know, I’m so sorry) so when she said ‘it’s all gonna be over’ I was like… is there an apocalypse I was unaware of 🤷🏽♀️
they mean football as in soccer if you were unaware... and also england and other countries put a lot of emotions in football/soccer which usually ends in bad stuff
This song was written by two british comedians in the 90s when England made it to the world cup final. It refers to how football was invented in England, so if they win the trophy will be coming home. It became the unofficial anthem for the England team. Sadly it didnt come home in the 90s, nor did it come home today!
@Angelina McCaster yup. Its really sad lol. It was 30 years of hurt in the 90s, now it's 55 years of hurt since England won our last major tournament :(
At the moment there is so much racism going around because of the penalties England took earlier and it’s honestly disgusting. Can people just grow up, please? I get it, England didn’t win and it’s terrible but to attack an England player just because of the colour of their skin is horrible! Not to mention it is completely irrelevant!
I’m sorry but I feel like this needs to be heard and they best way is to tell everyone I possibly can, if you’re still reading then thank you and I send you virtual warm hugs☺️ Please, please spread the word about this❤️
My heart sank when I realised just after the fact that the three guys who missed were all POC. Because I already knew what would happen next. The very fact that that thought even had to cross my mind in the first place when I'm supposed to be enjoying a damn football match just goes to show how messed up the worst of the fans have really made football.
I don't know if it's a good thing to spread this because it just makes their voice louder and hurt more people than necessary. Those who care about racism know that racists will say racist things at every opportunity. It's terrible but they're a minority troubled people. I don't want more hurt for POC when they didn't have to be subjected to stuff like this. Sorry if you're POC then I take it back you have every right to be mad. But if you're not then it might do more harm than good spreading stuff like this. There are better ways to tackle racism
This was beautiful! Did you sing this while having COVID?!?!? I guess I have no excuse now. 😂😂 I'm perfectly healthy so I kind of have to record my own music...thank you for the kick in the butt, haha. And my condolences, England. But you came very far. My lovely Croatian team's five minutes of fame ended before they even started. 😕
I was absolutely rooting for Italy to win (I support whatever side is not England) and the joy I felt for Italy was immense. England colonised the world but they can't win anything now lol
This was the number 1 hit when I was born (when England made it to the semis in 96) and now I’m 25 and England made it to the finals so it’s surprised me how “into” the football I’ve got given I’m also not really patriotic. This song has been on loop in the back of my mind for weeks and now there’s a dodie version??? Pass me a box of tissues
I always loved the song with the message of hope. It almost made you want to have England win it. Until you hear the English fans misbehave themselves, both outside and inside the stadium with fighting, booing a proud anthem and all the racism. I sadly don't think anyone outside England lost any sleep over them losing.
i don't know anything about British football but It has made me realize how many British people i follow on Instagram lol everyone posting on their stories
Dang it! I was cheering England on because I thought they played better:( Though a lot people in Denmark didn’t, Idk:/ I did think it was not very ✨sTyLiSh✨ of them to go “BOOOOOOOOO” every time Italy had the ball or when they yelled so hard, it was impossible to hear Denmark’s national song:( But I still wanted them to win:(((((
dodie is really the only one i still sypathize with, no matter how much she talks/"fangirls"lol how do you say this about football....with all this drama going on I´m even more annoyed by everyone just completly overreacting over a ball in a net...
@yoyoyo also not everyone is english - for all you know that person is italian lol i'm happy england didn't win because i'm danish + we got so much support from all over the world because people didn't want england to win, why you ask? well people are still a little mad about colonialism lol (and brexit for that matter)
@yoyoyo Really nobody outside of England wanted England to win. Really the English fans were absolutely disgusting. And I don't even watch or support football.
Considering that England colonised, murdered, stole from and oppressed like 90% of the worlds countries, are you surprised that the vast majority of the world was hoping you’d lose. Not to mention recent events with Brexit and the snarky comments being made about EU immigrants and Europe in general, it’s really no surprise that people wanted them to lose. English fans are also some of the most violent, some of us just can’t get behind that
@N.A I see what you mean but no need to bring colonialism into it, that's just so ridiculously hypocritical it's unbelievable. I dont understand why other europeans have this superiority complex over england about colonialism, considering most western european countries also did colonialism and colonialism was literally a joint european effort. Italy did colonialism too and everyone was happy they won, and people would also have been happy if a country like france or spain or portugal won instead of england and they did loads of colonialism, before England even started its empire. Let's not pretend, just like eurovision this was mainly about brexit. Mainland europeans are just pissy that the uk, who used to be the biggest cash cow in the EU, doesn't have to pay anymore
@Ariola Granola If you're gonna use percentages in your argument at least make them accurate lol. Truly, considering europe as a whole colonised most of the world you'd think nobody would want any western european country to win, but people only seem to bring up england 🤔
@yoyoyo The fans are horrible which they proofed once again this morning and the whole night, but then pointing lasers at the Danish keeper for the penalty that wasn’t even a real one. Also booing others during the anthem and this arrogance over the whole course of the tournament.
@yoyoyo also you saying don’t bring colonialization into this when the trainer of England literally said the fans where so hostile about Germans in Wembley bc of the World War. I am German btw, but I don’t support our national team bc they are quite shit and I am more into Bundesliga
@Allison Lee My point is just that if people hate the english for colonialism and imperialism then they should keep that same energy for other countries in western europe, Japan, america, etc etc but they never do
@Paula it wasn't arrogance, england hasnt won in 55 years lol it was desperate optimism. People shouldn't have booed or pointed lasers or whatever, but everyone's misinterpreting enthusiasm for the team, ie chanting it's coming home, as arrogance. People don't understand what the songs actually about, it's about cheering on a team that always loses and keeping hope despite everything. If your team hadn't won anything in 55 years you'd understand
@yoyoyo damn I still regularly get asked about Hitler and people raise their right arm on me, there is definitely more hostility against Germans than there is against England.
@Paula exactly, so you'll understand how annoying it is when people hold things that happened in the past over the heads of people who live in the same country but weren't even born at the time past bad stuff occurred
@yoyoyo the difference is that we as germans teach our history. Every child knows the dangers of nationalism and Nazis, we know what our ancestors did and we vow to never ever repeat it. From the 8th grade on you talk about it every year, we visit concentration camps, we read about it. History is mandatory in Germany. In your country the common wealth, colonialism and the victorian age is still things people look up to, while we in Germany mark it as the darkest chapter in our history
@Paula we learn about colonialism at school and we aren't taught to glorify it anymore, and the commonwealth is something countries can pull out of if they want nobody's forcing them to stay. Do you learn about all the colonialism germans did in africa at school? And what does any of this have anything to do with football? You're saying people are glad england lost a football game just because we don't learn enough about colonialsm at school?
@yoyoyo as a welsh person who was fairly anti England winning For me it was because of arrogance And while I understand being excited for the game (welsh people get very patriotic too) English fans ALWAYS take it too far Most other countries are just “I’m excited I hope we win!” Whereas England is “we will win! And I’m gonna scream in everyone’s faces about how we WILL win. And I’m gonna be violent and disruptive because we WILL win” If people were being rowdy and celebrating because they DID win I’d understand But England fans just take the game way more personally than other countries do to an unhealthy extent As shown by the actions after they lost the Italy match :/
@Paula i understand that the fans were assholes but why the team? The team have been very admirable, what with taking the knee to protest against racism in football despite backlash for this they refused to back down and took the knee anyway. And the italian fans were been violent too, they assaulted several people
@Ceri-Ann do you mean the chant it's coming home? You've misunderstood the meaning. The song is about hopeless optimism in spite of everything, england hasn't won in 55 years it's about loving the team despite this. The origional song was written by comedians, the whole thing was a sort of joke and very ironic as the england team is usually so shit. I know england fans behaved badly, but italian fans did too they assaulted several people. I'm not surprised most of the news has been about england fans considering the match was held in england
@yoyoyo no I’m fine with the song, I actually quite like it, it’s hopeful and very human I mean just the attitude in general Also regardless of Italian fans They’re just as bad sure But that doesn’t take away from England fans
@yoyoyo ngl a lot of people have a lot of reasons for not liking england, but i don't think the commenter meant it in a malicious way like they probably just support italy do they don't want england to win which is fair
find it comforting u have corona. i might have it and i’m nervous for my result. u make it look fine so i might be fine. i’m typing into the abyss rn but i don’t mind :)
It's actually been a fair bit longer than 30 years now. England's never won a european cup but won the world cup in 1966. And nothing since. So that's 55 years :)
YOU’RE FUCKING LYING AS SOON AS WE LOST I IMAGINED A SLOWER MORE INTIMATE COVER AND WHO BETTER TO DO IT THAN THE QUEEN HERSELF…? did I just manifest this…?
So funny to see how the whole EU was watching this match, even when their own team most likely already lost because it's the finale duh but when I went on my walk during the match I could see the game in almost every window I walked past. The entirety of the EU was on the edge of their seats, especially in the 11m part (idk how its called in english), everybody just watching the game.
LMAOOOO the videos chronicling the rise and fall (but mostly fall) of england in the game while the song plays cheerfully in the background… poetic cinema. rip britain
I don't think the song is sad. It's always sung by people that are happy and hopeful. Football may be a conduit for repressed male emotion and they may bring it out in this song but I don't think that's what it's for. The same is done for "sweet Caroline" at matches. If you hadn't won in 30 years, more now obviously, I think a little bit of nostalgia is fine.
Such a shame how England has painted itself as a nation in the past few years, what was once the centre of occidental idealism in Europe has tried to disassociate itself from euro-centric culture. Between colonisation and Brexit to the racism and stabbings that happened tonight just because of a soccer game, it’s sad to see a nation make the rest of it’s continent dislike it. Even with the 0 points at Eurovision and the amount of pro-italy support I’ve seen in other European countries it’s clear that Europe is not England’s biggest fan….
i get your point except for the colonialism part. Considering most countries in western europe did colonialism too, seems rather hypocritical to hate england for that reason
"not that patriotic" 🤭 I think patriotism around the world will be "going the long way" along with our parents... smacks too starkly of extremist regimes to the millenial ear, I fear.
This song was written by two british comedians in the 90s when England made it to the world cup final. It refers to how football (soccer to americans) was invented in England, so if England wins a trophy then football will be coming home. It became the unofficial anthem for the England team. Sadly it didnt come home in the 90s, nor did it come home today at the European championship finals :(

@yoyoyo It was actually about the 1996 European Championships, not World Cup. It was "coming home" because the Euros were hosted in England that year. England didn't make it to the final that year - yesterday was the first final England reached since 1966. The song was rerecorded for the 1998 World Cup and has since become an anthem played for every tournament.
So glad England lost, can't deal with another 50+ years of fans not letting us forget it. Feel bad for the team and especially the young players but the English fans drive me mad, the arrogance is unreal.
this after the England loss has Christmas songs in a minor key energy

this is the first time i've heard this song and it made me cry when i desperately needed to so.... thanks i guess?
1 likeI'm sorry for the loss England and congrats to Italy. The dodie version is so nice. My dad introduced me to this anthem this morning.

Lmao I'm European but I really don't keep up with football, so I was confused too. That explains all the cheering and yelling outside my dorm though.
4 likesthey mean football as in soccer if you were unaware... and also england and other countries put a lot of emotions in football/soccer which usually ends in bad stuff
2 likesThis song was written by two british comedians in the 90s when England made it to the world cup final. It refers to how football was invented in England, so if they win the trophy will be coming home. It became the unofficial anthem for the England team. Sadly it didnt come home in the 90s, nor did it come home today!
7 likes@yoyoyo oh my gosh, thank you for the background info ♥️♥️♥️ makes it all the more beautiful and bittersweet
1 like@Angelina McCaster yup. Its really sad lol. It was 30 years of hurt in the 90s, now it's 55 years of hurt since England won our last major tournament :(
0 likesthis is the funniest thing ive heard all summer thank you dodie
0 likesAre any of these one off covers available to stream or download anywhere? They're way too good to be limited to youtube audio compression
2 likesAt the moment there is so much racism going around because of the penalties England took earlier and it’s honestly disgusting. Can people just grow up, please? I get it, England didn’t win and it’s terrible but to attack an England player just because of the colour of their skin is horrible! Not to mention it is completely irrelevant!
132 likesI’m sorry but I feel like this needs to be heard and they best way is to tell everyone I possibly can, if you’re still reading then thank you and I send you virtual warm hugs☺️
Please, please spread the word about this❤️

Not to mention the attacks on random black people as well… it’s ridiculous
14 likesMy heart sank when I realised just after the fact that the three guys who missed were all POC. Because I already knew what would happen next. The very fact that that thought even had to cross my mind in the first place when I'm supposed to be enjoying a damn football match just goes to show how messed up the worst of the fans have really made football.
25 likes@Jinae I haven't heard anything about this, what's been happening?😥

0 likesJesus Christ football really brings the worst in some people
2 likesI don't know if it's a good thing to spread this because it just makes their voice louder and hurt more people than necessary.

I guess I have no excuse now. 😂😂 I'm perfectly healthy so I kind of have to record my own music...thank you for the kick in the butt, haha. And my condolences, England. But you came very far. 1 likeSo THAT'S what the lyric is. That's the first time I've really listened to it. Great Cover.
0 likesI was absolutely rooting for Italy to win (I support whatever side is not England) and the joy I felt for Italy was immense. England colonised the world but they can't win anything now lol
1 likeI'm glad you weren't part of the crowds of nutjobs rioting after a stupid sporting event. Beautiful song!
2 likesNow I'm happy I stayed up to watch the game because I get to see this :)))!
6 likesThis was the number 1 hit when I was born (when England made it to the semis in 96) and now I’m 25 and England made it to the finals so it’s surprised me how “into” the football I’ve got given I’m also not really patriotic. This song has been on loop in the back of my mind for weeks and now there’s a dodie version??? Pass me a box of tissues

0 likesI always loved the song with the message of hope. It almost made you want to have England win it. Until you hear the English fans misbehave themselves, both outside and inside the stadium with fighting, booing a proud anthem and all the racism. I sadly don't think anyone outside England lost any sleep over them losing.

6 likesReally it's the world's version of football. The American/Canadian versions aren't nearly as universal.
1 like@Asha Mae i should clarify, i dont know anything about any sport
0 likesDang it! I was cheering England on because I thought they played better:( Though a lot people in Denmark didn’t, Idk:/ I did think it was not very ✨sTyLiSh✨ of them to go “BOOOOOOOOO” every time Italy had the ball or when they yelled so hard, it was impossible to hear Denmark’s national song:( But I still wanted them to win:(((((
1 likedodie is really the only one i still sypathize with, no matter how much she talks/"fangirls"lol how do you say this about football....with all this drama going on I´m even more annoyed by everyone just completly overreacting over a ball in a net...

Why are you happy england didn't win?
3 likes@yoyoyo its england.
17 likes@oh the misery I know. Why are you happy england didn't win?
1 like@yoyoyo because its england
13 likes@oh the misery oh okay. was just wondering if there's any actual logical reason, not just the tired old because its england
2 likes@yoyoyo at least for me, there isn't. maybe op's got something, i just don't like england.
8 likes@oh the misery ah yes, not liking an entire country just for no particular reason. Makes sense
4 likes@yoyoyo yeah, you got it
11 likes@yoyoyo also not everyone is english - for all you know that person is italian lol
4 likesi'm happy england didn't win because i'm danish + we got so much support from all over the world because people didn't want england to win, why you ask? well people are still a little mad about colonialism lol (and brexit for that matter)
@yoyoyo Really nobody outside of England wanted England to win. Really the English fans were absolutely disgusting. And I don't even watch or support football.
13 likesConsidering that England colonised, murdered, stole from and oppressed like 90% of the worlds countries, are you surprised that the vast majority of the world was hoping you’d lose. Not to mention recent events with Brexit and the snarky comments being made about EU immigrants and Europe in general, it’s really no surprise that people wanted them to lose. English fans are also some of the most violent, some of us just can’t get behind that
8 likes@N.A I see what you mean but no need to bring colonialism into it, that's just so ridiculously hypocritical it's unbelievable.
1 like@Ariola Granola If you're gonna use percentages in your argument at least make them accurate lol. Truly, considering europe as a whole colonised most of the world you'd think nobody would want any western european country to win, but people only seem to bring up england 🤔
0 likes@yoyoyo The fans are horrible which they proofed once again this morning and the whole night, but then pointing lasers at the Danish keeper for the penalty that wasn’t even a real one. Also booing others during the anthem and this arrogance over the whole course of the tournament.
6 likes@yoyoyo also you saying don’t bring colonialization into this when the trainer of England literally said the fans where so hostile about Germans in Wembley bc of the World War. I am German btw, but I don’t support our national team bc they are quite shit and I am more into Bundesliga
1 like@Allison Lee My point is just that if people hate the english for colonialism and imperialism then they should keep that same energy for other countries in western europe, Japan, america, etc etc but they never do
0 likes@Paula it wasn't arrogance, england hasnt won in 55 years lol it was desperate optimism.
0 likes@yoyoyo damn I still regularly get asked about Hitler and people raise their right arm on me, there is definitely more hostility against Germans than there is against England.
1 like@Paula exactly, so you'll understand how annoying it is when people hold things that happened in the past over the heads of people who live in the same country but weren't even born at the time past bad stuff occurred
0 likes@yoyoyo Are you English?
0 likes@yoyoyo the difference is that we as germans teach our history.
1 like@yoyoyo they literally made fun of a little german girl crying
0 likes@Paula we learn about colonialism at school and we aren't taught to glorify it anymore, and the commonwealth is something countries can pull out of if they want nobody's forcing them to stay. Do you learn about all the colonialism germans did in africa at school? And what does any of this have anything to do with football? You're saying people are glad england lost a football game just because we don't learn enough about colonialsm at school?
0 likes@yoyoyo as a welsh person who was fairly anti England winning
0 likesFor me it was because of arrogance
And while I understand being excited for the game (welsh people get very patriotic too) English fans ALWAYS take it too far
Most other countries are just “I’m excited I hope we win!”
Whereas England is “we will win! And I’m gonna scream in everyone’s faces about how we WILL win. And I’m gonna be violent and disruptive because we WILL win”
If people were being rowdy and celebrating because they DID win I’d understand
But England fans just take the game way more personally than other countries do to an unhealthy extent
As shown by the actions after they lost the Italy match :/
@Paula i understand that the fans were assholes but why the team? The team have been very admirable, what with taking the knee to protest against racism in football despite backlash for this they refused to back down and took the knee anyway. And the italian fans were been violent too, they assaulted several people
0 likes@Ceri-Ann do you mean the chant it's coming home? You've misunderstood the meaning. The song is about hopeless optimism in spite of everything, england hasn't won in 55 years it's about loving the team despite this. The origional song was written by comedians, the whole thing was a sort of joke and very ironic as the england team is usually so shit. I know england fans behaved badly, but italian fans did too they assaulted several people. I'm not surprised most of the news has been about england fans considering the match was held in england
0 likes@yoyoyo no I’m fine with the song, I actually quite like it, it’s hopeful and very human
0 likesI mean just the attitude in general
Also regardless of Italian fans
They’re just as bad sure
But that doesn’t take away from England fans
@yoyoyo well for starters, the penalty that brought you into the finale wasn’t even one
0 likes@yoyoyo ngl a lot of people have a lot of reasons for not liking england, but i don't think the commenter meant it in a malicious way like they probably just support italy do they don't want england to win which is fair

The entirety of the EU was on the edge of their seats, especially in the 11m part (idk how its called in english), everybody just watching the game.

1 likeI don't think the song is sad.

40 likesSuch a shame how England has painted itself as a nation in the past few years, what was once the centre of occidental idealism in Europe has tried to disassociate itself from euro-centric culture.

0 likes@yoyoyo It was actually about the 1996 European Championships, not World Cup. It was "coming home" because the Euros were hosted in England that year. England didn't make it to the final that year - yesterday was the first final England reached since 1966.

2 likesIt just gives me pure pleasure imagining white, basic, 40 year old British men having a tantrums.
So glad England lost, can't deal with another 50+ years of fans not letting us forget it. Feel bad for the team and especially the young players but the English fans drive me mad, the arrogance is unreal.
