It's because she hasn't developed her style. Just like every artist has their art style, a singer usually has a way of singing. She's just singing now, like how they teach you to do in choirs. She hasn't developed her own original Dodie style
+Summer theYoutuber I'm pretty sure she is 16 in this video, considering she turns 21 in 2016. In her remake, she said she wrote it two years before filming it (this video). Therefore, she was 14 when she wrote this song. :-P
do not get me wrong both voices are amazing but when she sings this way its more powerful and can really showcase what dodie can really do. At her current state i feel like her voice has gone soft. Not saying i do not like soft and sweet voices, but i prefer impactful, powerful, and more influential singing like this
maybe she just developed her own singing style and she would have to practice to go back, but i think the way she is singing right now is easier for her.

Maybe she just likes the way she does it now, and likes the lighter style more so that's the music she makes, it's still good but I want to see another like this where she can belt out something
I used to be able to sing quite high notes, but overtime my range has diminished a ton. If that's not the case for her it's just a style preference. Sometimes people's voices change for the better, sometimes for the worst. Not that Dodie's voice is bad now, it's still lovely! I just much prefer her voice like it is in this video.
I'm considered a soprano/belter, but belting is actually stressful (I don't know who to explain it) for me, so I prefer to sing songs that are softer. I feel like Dodie might also be a bit insecure in her singing abilities, and I notice she sings very softly in her videos. I think it might be psychological, like people who think they can't sing at all, but can and are just afraid.
@Ava L. ahh i gotcha. that makes loads of sense, really. im the same way accept with the exact opposite. im told im fairly good with singing soprana but i hate my head voice sooo much & feel much more confident with my chest voice & with belting in general. i didnt see it in that perspective haha thank u!
Azki Kalim she's not hiding it. Her chest voice kind of got ruined when she grew up. She did a lot of musicals back then. As she grew up... she didn't do as many therefore her chest voice kind of disappeared.
Azki K i’m pretty sure i saw something where she said that she thinks majority of people belt/use their chest voices and so singing softer and with her head voice is her own style
Azki K She used to be in a lot of school plays and musicals when she was younger so this is probably why. Usually when she performs live you can hear this much more as she has to project for the audience. I like her quiet voice too though
pepepe She released a new song called in the middle and her voice is a lot stronger on there. Her belt isn't gone but just less noticeable. But i definitely think she prefers her head voice because of her style now.
Azki K I know, now she kind of talk-sings, and she sings with hardly any range now. I'm not trying to nit-pick, I love dodie, but I just wish she wouldn't hide her voice as much as she does.
if it is her choice to sing more softly it's kinda annoying all the people in the replies here criticising that. her voice is unique now & how she likes it, just because she can belt doesn't mean she has to. also belters are everywhere, i personally prefer her softer voice
@Azki A This is so late, but maybe she's afraid she'll break it down if she continues to hit high notes. People can do it, but lots of times, after time, it wears down your voice and sometimes even makes it raspy. Dodie probably wants a soft sound.

as strange as this weird emo song is it accurately describes my life right now.(PREPARE FOR ONE HELL OF A PARAGRAPH) because I've been known as the nice guy at school for years and all of my life but with the shit that has happened recently. Ex My cat and hamster died within a week and on the same day my hamster died an asshole from my school jumped me and gave me a black eye, but i still acted happy at school and i told everyone that i had simply bumped into a wall. And later that month the guys two buddies came after me and my friends and tried to "get us:. And the teachers didn't do shit. for the next two months in homeroom. It only has gone downhill from here...i went down in music, my grades have suffered a lot and I don't know how to fix it all in time for the track team.

Am I the only one who feels like her voice was better back here?...I'm not hating btw! I love her voice and when I say better I don't mean it's bad now. So in class today my teacher said we can listen to music while we work, so the first thing I thought was "great, now I can listen to doddleoddle!" So i put in my earphones and put on this song. Well by the time the 3rd chorus came along I could not resist and I started to sing along (very loudly i might add) and when the song finished i looked up from my work and everyone was starring at me. What I took from this moment, nobody can help singing along to a doddleoddle song... Nobody!

Ex My cat and hamster died within a week and on the same day my hamster died an asshole from my school jumped me and gave me a black eye, but i still acted happy at school and i told everyone that i had simply bumped into a wall. And later that month the guys two buddies came after me and my friends and tried to "get us:. And the teachers didn't do shit. for the next two months in homeroom. It only has gone downhill from here...i went down in music, my grades have suffered a lot and I don't know how to fix it all in time for the track team.
