Did Celestia Free Nightmare Moon? 🌙

I know the books aren’t necessarily canon, but Celestia legitimately stages a monster attack to help a group of students learn defense spells in “Princess Celestial and the Summer of Royal Waves,” which is strikingly similar to how you’re describing your new interpretation of Nightmare Moon’s return.

Just remember, back then, Celestia had a more omniscient and omnipresence in MLP, that's all you need to know in order to understand how Luna got out of the moon.
When Celestia can talk about "signs" and write a book about it, give Twilight guidance which Twilight misunderstood (part of being omniscient on Celestia's part), that means it's suppose to be a mystery how Celestia knew exactly how things would play out - she was more of a god then, before hashbro nerfed her.

This works with a theory I have. Celestia was creating the bearers of the elements before Twilight. Sunset Shimmer as the bearer of Magic, Cadance as the bearer of Laughter, Shining Armor as the bearer of Loyalty, I don't have any idea who would have been honesty , kindness, or generosity. This would explain why Cadance a Princess was going to public school and babysitting Twilight, Celestia saw the connection between Cadance and Shining Armor. We know Celestia has some ability of prophecy and could be using that gift to find possible bearers. This even plays with how Sunset Shimmer fell, Celestia saw one of her students become a bearer of Magic then later an Alicorn. At the time she made the error of thinking that the student would have been Sunset, leading Sunset to her own downfall. Celestia's School of gifted Unicorns could have been set up just to fine the Bearer of Magic.

Summary: Celestia using prophecy was trying to find bearers of Harmony even before Twilight Sparkle. Sunset Shimmer bearer of magic, Cadance bearer of Laughter, and Shining Armor bearer of Loyalty.

I do love this, but it doesn’t follow the alternate timelines when Starlight stopped the rainboom. If Celestia had the ability to release her then why would she release her when there wasn’t anyone to stop her. It makes more sense that an exterior force released her and Nightmare overpowered Celestia and Twilight’s first victory was just that. a victory

I have this headcanon that Celestia disguised herself as Nightmare Moon. When Celestia wielded the Elements and blasted Nightmare Moon, they had purified her, but Celestia used too much of her magic to bend them to her will and accidentally banished her sister. After 1000 years, the spell wore off and Luna returned, but was in a near-death state, so Celestia, giving Twilight and her friends the push they needed, disguised herself as Nightmare Moon, and what they went through in the Everfree Forest were test to ensure that the 6 were the ones to rightfully bear the Elements of Harmony. But Celestia had to rush the "final showdown" as Luna was nearing death, so she gave Twilight the final push she needed, then either redirected a portion of the rainbow blast onto Luna, or pulled Luna pulled Luna into the blast, both resulted in reviving her. Then after the Mane 6 collapsed , Celestia dropped her disguise, left the castle, put the sun and moon in their right places, and then returned to congratulate her student and welcome her sister back into the fold.

I still agree with your theory Sawtooth, i too still believe that Celestia had everything to do with freeing Nightmare Moon i mean after all Celestia's the one who put her on the moon in the first place so if she put Nightmare Moon there then she could definitely release her too, i mean it's kinda like the part in "The Return Of Harmony Part 1" where Celestia said that the chamber of the elements of harmony was protected by a spell that only she could break and if that was so then that would mean Celestia would literally be the only one who could release nightmare Moon.

Honestly I really think that she didn’t have much to do with Nightmare Moon, she did technically want her little sister back, though, she’s usually thinking of many pony’s of the town instead of just her sister

What we know: Celestia wanted to get her sister back. Twilight's Cutie Mark was on the Tree of Harmony, so Celestia knew (or at least could reasonably guess) that Twilight would rediscover the Elements of Harmony. Nightmare Moon came back in at least one of the alternate timelines where the Rainboom didn't happen (although that one could be explained if Twilight got her cutie mark later and Celestia took interest, but due to other effects of the timeline changes, she was unable to rediscover the Elements of Harmony and failed to stop Nightmare Moon). There was a prophesy that said that Nightmare Moon would return in 1000 years after her banishment.

What actually makes the most sense is that Celestia either had to set the deadline at the beginning (when she was casting the spell 1000 years ago) and hope that she lived in a world where things work out or that she didn't release Nightmare Moon herself, that way it makes the prophesy and alternate timeline make the most sense, while still fitting Celestia's character of wanting to save Luna but being unable to do it at the time (I believe that the reason why Celestia banished Nightmare Moon was because the rift between her and Luna basically broke the connection between Celestia and the Elements of Harmony enough that all she could do was banish her, and it took Twilight forging a bond with the other ponies to use the Elements properly). But it could have also been other forces at play that freed Nightmare Moon and Celestia was just working within them to do her best to save her sister (by helping Twilight meet her friends).

My theory is that Celestia was prepping Cadence to defeat Luna, not Twilight. But when Celestia saw the potential in Twilight, she thought to let her try and keep Cadence as backup. (Celestia probably thought that CAdence could magic Love back into Nightmare Moon to stop her.) Which would also explain why Celestia would unseal Luna without Twilight during the Alternate Timeline. (In which Cadence would have failed. Because well, Nightmare Moon is too good for that!)

No, she released Nightmare Moon cause she knew Twilight could reform her. It's been established that Celestia can see visions on things to come.

Well later in the series where Tirek returns we see Celestia has prophetic dreams. In Celestial Advice we see that Celestia had known who the Elements of Harmony where before hand as well, as she stuggle with WHEN to send Twilight to Ponyville. I think how her prophecies have limits related to how far in the future them even is. The future in the future the more vague the propecy is, the closer the more accurate. If Celestia has used her abilities to help her make decisions then her behavior makes sense.
She knew Nightmare would return at a Farming Village outside the Everfree, so when the Apples petitioned her for land she knew what land to give them. She took on personal students because she knew a powerful Unicorn representing friendship would save Luna, her disappointment in Sunset was because she initially thought Sunset was the unicorn but her antisocial and power hungry tendencies proved that wrong. I don't think Celestia hand dore t control over anything she was prepared for, as she got details wrong. Like knowing Twilight would save the Crystal Empire, but not that she would do so by letting Spike bring the Crystal Heart to Cadence. She always planned and prepared for things she knew would happen, but as to causing events don't think she ever acted directly, she took steps to be ready and deal with consequences of events she couldn't stop.

I wonder what happened to the rest of the alicorns. Did Princess Cadence and Flurry Heart give up their immortality for Shining Armor not being able to become an alicorn? What became of the Crystal Empire? Did Celestia and Luna give up their immortality to help out Twilight? Something must've happened to them because aren't alicorns immortal? Apparently alicorns don't seem to exist anymore in the new generation. If someone has a theory or an answer to these questions, I would really appreciate it. The new generation has a lot of unanswered questions/explanations that I'm curious about.

My theory was that since the book said ‘the stars will aid in her escape’, Twilight was infact the one who freed Nightmare Moon and also Luna. Celestia may have seen this and it may be why she became her prize pupil after getting her cutiemark- which is made of stars and clearly references the element of magics symbol

But if she could’ve just freed Luna back, then why didn’t she do it earlier?

That would be messed up to just leave your sister banished for 1000 years, knowing you had the power to free her.

And ponies only have them on one side - sure this is probably Hasbro's way of making them closer to toys, but could this have something to do with magic in-universe?

I'm pretty sure that over the course of 1000 years at ANY point in between Celestia could've found the fitting element bearers and released Nightmare Moon if that were the case.

Maybe the 4 stars that freed NmM was actually trapped Grogar's essence that was locked away by Gusty using his own bell.
Since the Capricorn solar body had 4 primary connecting stars that give it shape.

Headcannon: Celestia is pulling a season 9 style "twist Discord", only the twist is never revealed and literally everything that has ever happened was staged by Celestia and her already knowing the outcome as the ultimate omniscient mastermind.

I like to think she did it both because she wanted to set things in stone for Twilight AND because she wanted her little sister back and knew this was the only way to have both.

I have a headcanon, where there was a third sister. Sun, moon, and stars.
The sister died at some point during Nightmare Moon's birth, and vowed to release her and reunite her sisters again.
Got the idea because the legend said that the "satrs would aid on he release" os something similar, and it felt strange giving Luna power over two elements (we're not talking accurate astronomy here, it's a magic world) and only one element for the oldest sister.
That star sister would be Cadence's mother, thus why she's the niece.

I always felt that magic in equestria was connected to the land they lived on. Its a thing the land generates, and it just finds its way into ponies like charging a phone or something. your magic would be limited without being on that land. as we see, in the human world you have limited magic until u have gems/artifacts that most likely came from equestria somewhere. So, knowing that. how would nightmare moon have magic... on the moon??? maybe alicorns have more magic or maybe the moon is still connected to equestria like our moon is connected to us. but like gravity, wouldnt the magic be a bit weaker?? or... does the moon have its own magic too?? i could see nightmare moon possibly getting some of her magic from the moon, in the way sunset gets some powers from her gem. she doesnt need it to have magic, but its quite a booster (or at least i think it was idk i havent watch it in months). id say I think the moon and sun do have their own magic, but it isnt controlled without help of a pony or smth. so... maybe her magic wasnt weaker, because she got some magic from the moon itself! it would be cool....

Actually, why is it only that Celestia had complete control over the situation or none at all? There's a third option. Celestia said that she "saw the signs of Nightmare Moon's return". That could be true: It's just the signs she saw aren't the ones WE'D think to look for.

In "Celestial Advice", Celestia tells the tale of her own struggles coming to terms with sending Twilight to Ponyville in the first place. During her story, she says this:

"I knew there was a special group of fillies in Ponyville, but I kept inventing all kinds of reasons for why I shouldn't send you."

I think that the signs Celestia saw weren't in the stars but in Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rarity, and Pinkie Pie: a special group of fillies who embodied the core Elements of Harmony, balances to whoever would wield the Element of Magic and further strengthen all the Elements' power to break Luna free of Nightmare Moon, a task Celestia was unable to complete wielding the Elements alone. With the prophesized thousandth Summer Sun Celebration coming, the timing was perfect except she hesitated because she was afraid of living without Twilight, her faithful student, a dear friend, in her life anymore.

In the end, she made the choice to send Twilight away to the ponies who were unknowingly waiting for her and moved the stars into position to unlock Nightmare Moon's prison with her proverbial fingers crossed because what happened next would be out of her hooves. Things would either work out with Twilight and her new friends' success leading to Luna being free once more and no longer suffering alone...or it'd fail and Nightmare Moon would become the new ruler of an eternally-darkened Equestria like in the first alternate Equestria we saw in "The Cutie Re-Mark". She had control of the stars and moved them into position to complete the prophecy, but ultimately she was just another pawn in the game albeit one that could see more of the board.

Wow, this is a cool concept! Celestia wanted twilight to develop a sense of independence, so she released nightmare moon! Though, if celestia released nightmare moon only so twilight can defeat her, then how was the prophecy that she would return on that day correct? Twilight most likely wasn’t born wet when the book with the prophecy was made

Maybe Celestia didn’t know how to reform Nightmare Moon so she waited for a pony to help her (that being Twlight of course) because she knew that that Twilight would be able to use her power to help restore Nightmare Moon

I think it's as simple as the spell wore off, just like they say in the show. No reason to read into it too much.

Why did Twilight move to Canterlot to rule Equestria? She literally had a castle grow out of the ground for her. I feel like it would've made more sense for her to rule from Ponyville.

I don't know how true to canon this is, but in the game of My Little Pony it says that "Princess Celestia is the ruler of Equestria, responsible for raising the sun, the moon and the stars, she is also Twilight Sparkle's mentor."

So it really depends on do you trust the game or not

@Sawtooth Waves Can someone explain to me why Twillight from the Human-World does have wings when she "Pony-Up" and doesn't have wings when she is in Equestria? Twillight from Equestria on the other hand has wings in both worlds.

I d'ont think she did, there's two instances where it is shown, one in the episode where Starlight finished her studies and Twilight go crazy from thinkling about what would happen to her protege, and the finale of season 5, we see an instance of Nightmare Moon ruling a world in which Twilight never became the student of Celestia.
So, while I love the idea of Celestia releasing a world threatening god just as a way to advance the training of her protege, I don't think it stick.

A good theory, but something is bugging me. When Starlight changed the past, which means Twilight didn't enroll in Celestia's school, the future still shows that Nightmare Moon escape. So it just wouldn't make sense why Celestia would free Nightmare Moon just like that?

it's an interesting theory, a challenge for Twilight of her friends, it's not far-fetched that Celestia had plans for Twilight to become the princess of equestria the entire time, so she probably was behind a lot of the challenges they faced

Well the sun is a star and Celestia controls the sun so it’s possible that she can control the stars as well however they are so far away her magic can’t constantly control them meaning she, for 1000 years, moved the stars each and and every morning until they perfectly aligned to break the spell. But only on the 1000th night, when she knew she would go to the moon herself, she fully moved them. Being on the moon ment she had time to stop using magic, time to rest. Still however I don’t think she found that out until much later into the time, as she must of had some vision telling her that Luna isn’t Luna yet, she is still corrupt not herself. So then is when she brought the main 6 into play, after seeing the rain-boom she must have believed they were the key to the elements and so gambled to hope Luna would be reformed by them.

"the stars will aid in her escape" means twilight's cutie mark. it means twilight and the mane 6, since twilight's cutie mark's big star represents twilight sparkle, and the small 5 other stars are her friends. this makes sense because they DO aid in her escape, they showed all elements of laughter, loyalty, generosity, kindness, honesty and magic. this is not celestia's doing, as the seeds for the tree of harmony were planted way back when she was a filly and starswirl disappeared into limbo. celestia cant write destinies, but the elements of harmony wrote twilight sparkles, maybe not the other mane 5, since their cutie marks did not fit uncannily like twilight's cutie mark did, but it would be granted that whatever friend group she was in, it would work. it wrote out the destiny of the villains and the heroes because it knew that without villains, there would be no heroes, which means no princesses to take after luna and celestia, which means a monotonous world of ponies.

Did you notice that every pony with magic has their own color. But when Celestia and Luna merged their crowns together it changed color to colorless or silver. Like When every pony use their magic as a shield to the Mane 7 in the final battle the shield was colorless or silver. And when Twilight use the united magic from The pillars, Mane 7 and the young 6 the magic was first without color and later every color. What could this mean?

The thing is with Celestia, if she had been the one freeing Nightmare Moon, meaning she had been doing everything to help the Mane 6 grow.
She can only see small glimpses but can bring just the right circumstances for the Mane 6 to prevail.

When Cozy glow, Crisallis and tyraner or waht was the name I forgot sorry nvm was defeated by the mane six all the powers were returned to the ponies and we could see that celestia and lunas hair was down but when they got their magic back their manes were flowing again so that means that Their hair flows with help of the Special magic inside the Princesses ofcourse the mane six's hair flows when ever the elements of harmony releases a vast amount of power which the mane six controll over a short time thats why it dosen't flows for long Enough, the Princesses have a different level of power which allows themm to controll over the special power so that might explain why their hair always flows but I really want to know what you think pls make a video about this

I know you might not respond to this comment but I think you should look at this statement, so for some background knowledge I bought a book called “The Journal Of the two Sisters” and one part of the book caught my eye. quote “Dear diary, I’ve never really given my cutie mark much thought. As alicorns, we were always told that when it was time for it to appear, it just would. Nothing to really concern myself about, right? But then I was hanging out with star swirl this evening under the stars, and he said he wanted to teach me a spell that was too powerful or him, but he was confidant that with practice, I could perform it with my alicorn magic. Eager to perform any of star swirls spells, I asked what it was. “Moving the stars!” He replied with a wild gleam in his eyes. He’s such a great friend, and I’m glad he has so much confidence in me-Luna” this is a portion of the diary that is written by Luna. Maybe she taught the spell to her sister celestia. As I don’t see why Luna would be able to move the stars while on the moon, remember when it was said that on the thousandth day of the thousands year, that the STARS WOULD ALIGN!!! This could be how she escaped, if celestia really is in control of the moon now i don’t see why she wouldn’t be in charge of the stars as well! I hope you look into this, it might not be Cannon but that’s for you to decide, I hope you read this

My theory is complicated.
Luna and nightmare moon are two different ponys to me. Nightmare moon is possessing Luna, and taking control while Luna is sitting idly by waiting for her escape and freedom. My thought is that Luna set nightmare moon free. She doesn't have much power anymore but she can still control some elements of the night while stuck in the night mare. She set nightmare moon free so that the main 6 could free her.

I don't think that Celestia could've released Nightmare Moon. Even if she was in charge of both day and night while her sister was imprisoned, there has been no statement or clue about either of them being able to move the starts. So, I think there are only two possibilities: either Nightmare Moon was released by a magical and yet natural event, like that comet Twilight wanted to see on the cruise with her family, or someone else moved the starts to release Nightmare Moon.

Technically, Lauren Faust's original idea was that Celestia planned it all along. However, whether that's official or not, we'll never know.

Come to think of it, Do you think that its Twilight's fault that Celestia freed Nightmare moon, because at the beginning of the episode Twilight tells Spike to write a letter to Celestia warning her about the prophecy, therefore giving Celestia the idea to free her. Also i just remembered, Spike was resisting to sent the letter to Celestia, maybe this is due to him knowing of Celestia's intentions hoping to prevent what's to come of letter.

The whole series near its last few seasons was centred around unity not just for ponies but for all of the world

I have a few theories of my own but honestly I have little clue of what actually happened:

Discord and fluttershy got married and they lived a long happy life however fluttershy is not immortal and eventually she had to go
With her friends around her discord wanted fluttershy to have a safe passing to the afterlife and so he guided her to it
(btw I’m almost crying by the idea of fluttershy dying) thats when discord felt true harmony and he decided to leave his body and continue on like he did in the episode where Starlight was the headmare. He didnt die he just astral projected himself to the afterlife together with fluttershy
(Its a happier ending then my others so Imma stick with this one) 😭

Do you remember the season 5 finale "The Cutie Re-Mark?" I think that episode was meant to confirm that Nightmare Moon most likely escaped the moon herself. Plus, I think just like how Discord did in the series finale, Celestia's task for Twilight to find the elements of harmony and use them to restore Nightmare Moon back to Luna was meant to give her the experience and understanding on what she needs to do and be in order to become a worthy successor to the throne because Celestia probably wanted to eventually spend more time with Luna as a friend/family member. The only difference between Discord's and Celestia's methods was Discord's was probably more reckless than Celestia's.
