Autumn People were based in Phoenix Arizona and released one album in 1976. According to drummer Steve Barraza, the band was the most popular group in Phoenix at the time, and had extensive live activity in which they played in clubs and halls from coast to coast. One of the band's friends from that period who posted gregg on a music blog noticed that they were always on their way between Texas and California, and that " Larry Clark was one of the two best guitarists I've ever heard live, always very quiet and always amazing! The band did all kinds of live music, progressive, pop hits and even cabaret, putting on one of the best live shows ever." It was mentioned that at one point they almost secured an opening for Styx only to fail.
Here we have an honest local/regional act that possessed a considerable amount of talent, especially guitarist Clark and drummer Barranza. I'm sure Gregg's right that the band was a lot better in person than they were on this album. But the Album Autumn People is really interesting to prog-rock collectors, especially those interested in somewhat shabby '70s hard rock with proggy dress. The band seems to combine elements of groups like Wishbone Ash, Kansas and Styx with a bit of Southern rock and hard rock, but that's an imitation 2nd or 3rd foot at best, I'm sorry I'm rough. There is little progressive rock influence in keyboards and arrangements, but only a little. They treat us with decent guitar playing as mentioned and tight drumming, with a few long instrumental passes here and there. Vocals are average at best. There are moments of beautiful mellotron and flute that give a proggy feel, but it always comes back essentially groovy, dated riff-rock with melodic choruses.
True, the bad sound of cd editions of Radioactive Records does not help, but there is little in the composition that is unforgettable. The most interesting thing about Autumn People for me is the story of the band that Gregg and others posted on the Internet, it's always fun to read about obscure groups and their adventures from those days. This is not terrible music in any way and may please some, but I can't get a 3-star rating here. Perhaps listening to the original vinyl or remaster with richer sound would amplify listening.
