I think the animation and the song are good enough that even non-pony fans would enjoy it. This is a remarkable piece of animation, period and I think it's one of the best pieces of fan-made animation ever made. I don't say that lightly. This deserves a ton of recognition.
I couldn't agree with you more man. This animation was the animation of the brony community. The passion and effort Warp Out put into it clearly shows 100 times over.
The mark of a good review is one that doesn't simply talk about what we all loved in a sycophantic manner, but instead eloquently analyzes both the individual elements and their synergistic contribution to the whole.
When I first saw the animatic as it came out, I thought it was just an overly ambitious project that would never come out, at least not with such quality. I was pleasantly surprised to see he was still working on it after a year, and the trailer removed any doubt that it would be great.
I just wish a few of the lip sync moments were a bit better, since I find myself getting easily distracted by them. But the cinematography was pretty amazing, and that's something we don't get to praise often in fan works, because it usually doesn't have such standout moments of brilliance.
Its works like this that makes me glad I joined the brony community. 3 years ago I was a furry who couldn't stand my little pony, but now I can't see myself being without it. It wasn't the show that got me hooked. It was the creations the community made.
From a review perspective it is worth listening to the piece with your eyes shut. The visual is exceptional and the timing of scenes beautiful, but with them removed you can hear the work that went into the sound track. I'm not saying that the sound track would make an excellent MP3 as is, because it is specifically built to do this one task, but it does it with finesse and is subtle.
But if you notice in the animation, Celestia tries fighting Luna off by herself. Leaving the elements to her last resort. She had no idea that it would banish her sister to the moon for 1000 years
TheEcthudan I personally like it a lot more. Besides the animation, the song is a lot better in my opinion. In terms of animation though, there is a lot more creativity in the transitions and design, as well as all the different effects used to pull you through the story and get you invested. Children of The Night was pretty much just copying the show, and while it did a good job, I still have to give points for coming up with new and interesting designs, not just for the characters, but for the backgrounds too. I think the big difference is that Children of The Night simply has you witness what is happening, but Lullaby for A Princess makes you a part of what's happening. It pulls you into the story and has you experience it with Celestia, instead of just watching Luna kidnap some fillies and colts. This one just clearly has A LOT more time and effort put into every detail.
TheEcthudan It's really hard to compare them since they are both masterpices on their own way. I would say Lullubay for a princess has better and emotional song. In terms of animation Childrens of the Night it has the best one out there, show accurate, really smooth and have dysney film feels. But then again Lullubay is made in different style and all backgrounds and charcter animations is handrawn. I disagree with +Matt S. The amount of effort has been taken in both project is quite questionable. I'd say the details and fps in Childrens of the Nigh is a lot more, but let's not forget that on that project worked a team of animators while in Lullaby where only 1 guy with help of 2 background artists. So if we compare this way then yes.
TheEcthudan I think Children of the Night aims high as a fan animation, but not as high as Lullaby since this is a 6 minute epic song matched to appropriately epic visuals. As a result Lullaby for a Princess has more epic moments, but Children of the Night has more consistent quality, without the awkward lip syncing moments Lullaby has.
But Lullaby for a Princess has a strong thematic advantage because of its song, which explores the characters' history. I just watch Children of the Night for the animation.
TheEcthudan I do think Lullaby is better than Children Of The Night, because I don't like the song from Children Of The Night, I don't think it flows quite as elegantly, and I don't really care for the story being told. I would call the animation in Lullaby more risky and unique, but I would also call the animation in Children more concrete and consistent. An artist learns so many new techniques and tools over the span of two and a half years, especially if they are consistently working at their craft, and this is evident in Lullaby, particular scenes look much different from others, like the scene when Celestia gets knocked into the room with the elements of harmony vs the scene where Luna and Celestia are interacting in Lunas room. The room scene looks much cleaner and well produced, and the elements of harmony scene looks a little more rough. Maybe this was a design choice, or maybe I'm just over analyzing it, I don't fuckin know, I'm just a dude who got expelled from High-School, what the hell do I know.
I do personally like Lullaby For a Princess Animation better than Children of the Night. I felt the song and the animation held more emotional weight, and it was all pulled from an event that actually happened in the show, told from a different perspective than we would expect. Children of the Night comes from a fan's idea, and while that isn't a bad thing, I feel it makes the concept of the animation itself more difficult for a viewer to appreciate.
TheEcthudan The fact that all the shots were hand drawn and absolutely no puppets were used in Lullaby for a Princess Animation, and puppets were used in Children of the Night makes me love it even more. Every single shot was drawn by hand and the effects go perfectly with the music as well as the emotion, i feel like warp out did such a better job at animating this then children of the night. Don't get me Wrong i love Children of the Night but I love this animation so much more. Plus all the Work put into it was amazing, the song was remade, the backgrounds were also animated, and Lens Flares as well as fog, dust particles and fire edits were used perfectly in the animation. Where Children of the night the song was just covered, the backgrounds weren't animated, and hardly used effects like that.
Children of the night has OK animations but lullaby for a princess I like top of the line animations. The song tells a better story and gives the viewer a better understanding.
Was the lip syncing really that big of a problem? You said it was "large" and "intrusive" when I barely noticed it, and it didn't fault the rest of the animation in any way for me.

How do you think this compares to Children of the Night? Do you think this is better than Children of the Night? If so, then what makes it better?
