This album Wrong was so far ahead of its time. This math rock hardcore stuff could easily be mistaken for something out of the late 90's or 00's. Does this really sound like something that was recorded in the 80's? This may be one of the most underrated bands ever.
If it was 83 sure, but it's 89, the year 13 Songs by Fugazi came out. They were very earIy on in the styIe, but by no means they were so ahead of time Iike your perceptions suggest. And this was out via AIternative TentacIes, which is JeIIo's IabeI and you can cIearIy teII it's a IogicaI evoIution of the Kennedys' sound.
there were other bass heavy post hardcore punk bands going at the time- but nomeanso were on alternative tentacles at the height of that label’s success (and prior), and you could actually get their records- bands like Ruins (from japan) were doing crazy, tightly composed bass driven noise rock as well during the era that this came out, as well as pre Man is the Bastard bands Cyclops and Pissed Happy children.
It is such a fantastic album. As someone above pointed out: not so much underrated, since most people who know it will sing its praises, but not as well known as it should be. I wouldn't go so far as to call it obscure.
math rock hardcore? never heard of this genre...its hardcore but not quite the agnostic front/hatebreed/dropkick murphys sounding hardcore...NMN is more like Black Flag (Angry Punk)
@Wicked Lee all great and all on my epic playlist for all time, I saw Alice D , NoMeansNo many times and saw Victims Family once sadly.. but they are one of my faves !
The vocals definitely keep in the 80s imo. The vocals have that olds 80s hardcore sounds, like early henry rollins in black flag. but I agree everything else sounds super 90's.
@Mark Preston true, can't remember anyone back then saying "gee, that band surely sucks!". Most folks weren't used to this high level of musicianship in the punk scene but they got enough props.
Well, THAT depends on WHAT your thinking of by 80s music. Now there were UNDERGROUND groups of the THAT DECADE like The Minutemen and Black Flag that were a little like THIS. But if your thinking Michael Jackson, Madonna, Sting, Huey Lewis, U2, Bon Jovi, and THAT lot then I can see you getting THAT impression.
@lotusflowerdeathstar Jello had a technical guitarist in DK named 6025. listen to his songs...Forward to Death, Ill in the Head...Straight A's...he left and became a prog musician who is rumored to have been in the mysterious Residents. he was gone after FreshFruit with the original drummer, and they never topped that album//early singles...the 5 piece was totally unique and never the same, as they fell into the hardcore sound soon after. this is NoMeansNo not overdoing the jazzy stuff...powerful, punk and what music writers call "angular"..but some songs are punk blasters. their best, imo. Hanson Brothers are awesome, too...way more powerful than Fugazi who were kinda boring after awhile. apples and Oranges. organic. of course.
check out some of the Big Boys (Texas punk band who flirted with funk and covered Kool and the Gang...). And Scratch Acid, they did re-invent the wheel, they are a lot of things, they just happen to be better musicians than most...but not the Big Boys. Check out their cover of Hollywood Swinging, and I Do Care and Lesson...definitely not math rock. Punk played by serious musicians, jazzy like Minutemen...a unique sounding band, but more people need to hear Big Boys...early 80s Texas skate punk.
i always liked this one because it was getting away from the previous albums jazzy-math songs...just because they could play doesnt make it mathy. its more straight forward punk. Big Boys, Minutemen were examples of bass heavy punk that were bands that could really play well. i think NoMeansNo really peaked here, thats not to say they went down...but this one is just unstoppable...song after song, no let up.
@lazarus_85 its not math...maybe some stuff before it, but its just well played bulldozer punk. (i just made that up). Its unique, but they werent reinventing the wheel. they could play better than most, but they werent an island.
@KOBKED-X hell yeah. check out the enigmatic (rick "didjit" sims couldnt hide that voice) Lee Harvey Oswald Band "A Taste of Prison" and "Blastronaut" lps on Touch and Go
@kollo duke hell yeah! OM is bass and drums, the rhythm section of Sleep who, while totally different, used chords. 90s band Some Velvet Sidewalk appear in Hype! probably the most definitive movie soundtrack also a 2 piece without guitar, but Big Boys, Stranglers and especially Australia's X were all bass driven by standout bassists--i think its unfair to call NMN mathy or proggy. Big Boys could nail an early Kool and the Gang cover alongside a driving skate punk powerhouse. At least with Andy Kerr, it was ultimately a punk band who could play and crossed the usual boundaries. They are, especially at this point, distinctive. Mr Bungle...i dunno, but post-hardcore would be just as much a slap in the face. As far as Alternative Tentacles---the label didnt really have a "sound".
@Mike Graham Clockcleaner, AFrames...late 70s aussies X have a heavy bass/drum sound. they dont sound the same, but are unique sounding that rely on the rhythm section while the guitar/vocals are free to do their own thing. Lamps, too.
I've never heard these guys before. You're right, this is from the 80s? That's crazy. It reminds me of like a combination between minutemen and Dead Kennedys. I'm only on the first track though.
@Dan M Keep going dude. You'll find they're punks and prophets. This is some real shit here! I would LOVE to be where you are right now, hearing nomeansno for the first time. I'm genuinely excited for you dude!
@aye b0ss 1989 still means recorded in the 80s. At my age, actual dates and time tend to flow together. I'm not trying to split hairs, just trying to point out this album was ahead of its time. Years later it was almost as if certain musicians were directly influenced by NoMeansNo.
as others have said in this comment thread, this sound to me is mid-80s and I wouldn't put this album as "ahead of its time" as nomeans no was doing things similar to this for the entirety of the 80s. check out "you kill me" ep, there were a lot of bands doing the same thing. check the bands that played with them. a lot a parallels to the chicago / louisville / dc scene
How the FUCK did these guys not take over the entire world?? "Rags and Bones" and "The End of All things" are seriously two of the greatest songs ever. The whole album is excellent. They should have as least as big a following as Fugazi did. I mean, Fugazi are great too, but these guys are superior in my opinion.
I got to play on the same bill with these guys when they were touring for this record. As soon as they started "It's Catching Up," the whole place just went insane, and nothing stopped until they'd finished the whole album. One of the greatest live bands I've ever seen.
Same! I saw them in salt lake city at the speedway cafe at least 3 times. Their shows were always sold out with tons of people listening outside. Ugh 😫 i miss real punk rock!
@Bill Davis - No. It was a warehouse space in Dayton, Ohio. I don't know if there was a name for it, but if there was, it might've been "The New Space" or something with "12x12" in it.
I'm so grateful one of my best buddies in the world turned me onto NoMeansNo. If you like Minutemen, Fugazi, Pere Ubu, Melvins, Mr. Bungle, or any other punk-influenced group that relies heavily on technical prowess in the rhythm section, then you can't go wrong here.
@John T id LOVE to forget Primus. Primus is obnoxious, post-Frizzle fry. i figured they'd get name dropped, but really not a good reference point. How about the Stranglers instead?
Everyone comments on the bassist's talent and rightly so, but to my ears the real superstar in the band is the drummer. Those are some of the most complex drum lines I've ever heard in rock music. Absolutely insane.
Maybe some of the comments on here focus on the bass, but generally John Wright is recognized as one of the best punk drummers of all time and really a world-class drummer more broadly. Dave Grohl refers to him as one of his favorite and most influential drummers.
two years ago i was wearing my NoMeansNo shirt and i randomly passed out while on the stairs and nearly gave myself a concussion. went to the ER and they did an EKG to see if it was a heart thing. in came a dude covered in tattoos who saw my shirt and we talked about music while he put electrodes on my body. i was fine btw.
I forwarded this to the various band members and, their 2 live sound guys and, the studio engineer who recorded most of their albums. BEST COMMENT EVER! (Hopefully getting passed on to John and Rob via Tom H or Chris Crud. Sent to Andy too!)
It's possible you had a panic attack. Assuming this isn't one of those recycled YouTube comments, I'm glad all was okay for you (and possibly making a new friend as well).
Heart conditions are no joke.

Not surprised and I believe your story 100%
Must. Edit. now. I stand by my assertion you are telling the truth. My 52 year old Detroit born hillbilly self says so and that's enough. For those of you who don't believe, then you haven't died yet...yet.
I remember when this was new I was living in Mission Beach. Others asked if it was 'Red Hot Chili' or something. I saw this tour in San Diego. Saw NOMEANSNO about 45 times.
@pedrao420 I'm such a nice bloke, that not only do I give great music for free, I give free concerts. By my reckoning, I have some serious residuals coming my way. Plus a few heartfelt apologies that I may or may not indulge in. That shall depend on my mood at the time. I do suspect that there shall be many fornication's that were supplied in a general fashion, all of which were heartfelt, yet ultimately directionless for they failed to meet their destination. Yet not being the acknowledged recipient, I can not be entirely sure of said desired delivery. I can only attest to my soul fueled desirations. Perhaps I shall inquire of my new neighbors as to my said efficacy?
My upstairs neighbour loves this album so much he dances to it really loud, his timing is a bit off but you cant blame him with all the signature changes in the songs
sometimes my neighbor (yeah, i spelled like a yank) asks what i was playing around 5 am...he liked it. i thought he was being passive aggro, but he writes it down and scurries away.
Nomeansno, Minuteman, Firehose, Primus, Mr Bungle, Infectious Grooves, Tortoise, Slint, Shellac, really took the attention from frontmen and guitarists, and switched it to the rhythm section...and also how else you could employ the band combo, the Genre based format, into something totally original... it feels like today folks just gave up... Opting to do an "homage"retro reconstruction of "rock encyclopaedia" notables. The search for originality changed focus toward the "producer", which generally loses the visceral, interaction between performers and crowd. I remember this album being ridiculously compressed; virtually no dynamic range, louder than whatever else preceding or following it, in those heady tape compilation days... but here we are, 3 dudes, playing their asses off, tight as fuck, thunderous and implacable. Freaking awesome!
Still one of my favourite bands if not the favourite. I remember the 1st time (1st of many) I saw them live back in the beginning of the 90's when Rob walked on stage and started fiddling with his bass and me thinking "man, that's an old roadie". Next thing the other two come on stage as well, Rob grabs the mike and says "Hi, we're NoMeansNo and we're here to play for you." The wall of sound they produced for the next 2 hours was not too bad for a bunch of old farts. The next day I'm walking to the train station in my new NMN T-shirt when a voice calls out "Hey man, nice shirt". So I turn around and there's Rob sitting outside a bar having a cup of coffee. He asks me if I want to join him, which I of course do and we sat there chatting away for the best part of an hour. Needles to say I missed my train but also needles to say I didn't give a flying F, plenty of trains but not too many opportunities to talk to one of your favourite artists.
@JONATHAN SUTCLIFFE To birg or not to birg, that is the question. We just knocked back a few and talked about life and what is right. Like 0+2=1, race that to the finish line at a dead run. You bitter man, I don't like to see you cry, you're alone and I know why. When does so much become so little and when does too little become too much? It was Mama's t-shirt btw, yellow on blue, Total Goombah! Always a lass....I was once on my way to visit this woman I knew, Victoria, what a bitch and always pissed. All we had in common was good sex.....only two lips two lungs and one tongue, well, you know what it's like when you just found out your girlfriend is a robot. Your older brother and his missus....newly weds, nearly deads, that would make a man bitter. Real love is scary, you try to hide when it looks for you because it don't care about me or you, not real love. Maybe it's better to be a brainless wonder....I need lunch, feed me now... big dick, come quick.......it's easy to rub off on you, be a good machine now. The hero is dead and the children are in bed so let the bells ring out. Don't worry, I don't really think this way, I did yesterday, but not today. Do you know why they call me Mr Happy?
In my humble opinion NMN are the greatest post hardcore band in history. Yes, I even consider them better than Fugazi and ATDI. Although, Mr Happy is personally my favorite album by them, not Wrong. Wrong is nothing short amazing though.
they are remarkably underappreciated. i've seen them several times, always as opening bands for punk standards, and they were always the best set. like, by far. i suspect the technically impressive musicianship and sorta eggheadish (at times) lyrics set them apart from punk as a whole. you almost have to qualify their type of punk, though i refuse to do so.
i was brought into a Jazz/Punk/Improv band about 9 yrs ago and the Bass player/band leader made me listen to these guys and I had the same reaction as you. how can one of the most important bands of all time go completely ignored ?!?
Wrong is the type of album that has a "before" and an "after". The kind you remember hearing for the first time. For me it was summer of 95, at the end of a concert/party in a field somewhere. The friend who put the show together played it on the PA shortly before the sun went up. About halfway through The Tower, my drummer - who already knew the album - looked at me and said "I think you have a new favorite record!". He was totally right.
@phroz I agree about NMN... to name my favourite album by them is another matter 'coz I don't think I really can. To me it's a very tough battle between Wrong, Why Do They Call Me Mr Happy and The Worldhood Of The World (As Such). But man, they were a great band.
Yeah brother, best band (and album) you never heard of. So fucking under appreciated with not nearly enough accolades and acknowledgment of it's brilliance. First time a dude played it for my in about 1997 I was all whaaaaaat-THE-fuuuuuuuuck dude!
@seejayunderscore dude they're just NoMeansNo, an animal unto itself. Incomparable. This album is a masterpiece, they could have just dropped the mic right there.
I hated dem Even though i saw them 85 montreal Battalion of saints Saints gave me ride back to Toronto Van dura Punks traveled far n wide The next gig Good olde days🖤🚺🚺🇨🇦🇨🇦
Over 1,4 million views? Wow! NoMeansNo have been one of my biggest favourite bands since 2013, I am glad to see some well-deserved love towards them, most of the comments warm my heart.
+revalesq Not entirely sure if it can be considered a punk album , but musically best album of the time would be This Heat Deceit. I've just stumbled across this album just now and it sounds fucking awesomethough, got to say.
+FAST N BULBOUS , WRONG has aged very well and. I got it when it was first released, but when it was released it was very much considered a punk rock record.
@misternylon yeah I know This heat aren't in the same vein at all, fuck it though i said it, i don't care. the cardiacs do some good progressive punk tracks, make sure u hear them. they are the best band of all.
+FAST N BULBOUS Not saying This Heat aren't great because they totally are, but considering your profile picture is Deceit I'm gonna have to call you a fanboy, just sayin. also imo This Heat's first album was better
Arguably too progressive to really be punk. Post punk, kinda like the DK. Enough staples to really cement them into the hardcore scene but much like plastic surgery disasters it has too many experimental qualities to really be true punk.
If labels are that important then technically it's a Post-Hardcore band. It has the same intensity of a hardcore band, but technically more complex and diverse in sound.
Post punk and post hardcore are really essentially the same genre. Both Hardcore and Punk Rock were limited to the same self imposed rules, post punk is really just a larger umbrella term than post hardcore.
It’s all punk rock really. It’s trite at this point, but still for some reason totally forgotten; punk is not a specific sound. Too many people define punk music into too narrow parameters. The Sex Pistols don’t sound like Talking Heads, Talking Heads don’t sound like Minor Threat, Minor Threat doesn’t sound like Gang of Four, Gang of Four don’t sound like the Cramps, the Cramps don’t sound like the Fall, etc. that’s the whole point. To say Nomeansno is not punk is some internet music critic revisionist shit
These guys were insanely ahead of their time! Can't believe this came out in 1989 Great stuff, one of NEW my favorite bands. so glad I found out about these guys.
This album literally saved me from a panic attack, and helped me reorient myself in the present moment and think for myself. Thanks to the artist and the person who uploaded this.
It's great to see that this album has well over a million views. No Means No wasn't one of the world's more famous punk bands, but they were one of the very best, and this album was their masterpiece. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to see some of their live shows, which were as tight and as energetic as those of the Ramones.
and on top of that they are really cool people to hang out with and puff one. Awesome from start to finish..AND they never sold out. The very best of the Best
@Szymon Nowak I have met them several times in the 90s when I lived in Vancouver. My roomates were on the Wrong Records label and they did a couple of tours with them. My ex-boyfriend owned the studio and actually recorded some of their 7inch records. Very nice guys. Sad that they retired, because musically, they are one of the most talented musicians in punk history
The most amazing thing about nomeansno is how long they have continued to create great music for. IMO all of their albums are good, and they are still amazing live today. How the fuck can this album have 42 thumbs down? Idiots!
@Francesco Tomasin I mean it's all subjective of course but for me and many of my friends, who grew up with NoMeansNo in our literal backyard/hometown, they saved my life in many ways, I can never thank them enough for the depth they shared so vibrantly! Saw them first in a shithole [much loved shit hole mind you] The Rats Nest, they played with Black Flag and some other band.. I was a kid still, age 14, they changed my life and then gave it back. When I did my first live performance for pay, I used their song Getting Started as my backdrop./walkout music, love them as if they were family, and they are in a way
no way. zappa couldnt dumb it down for an oh no bruno or two lipstwo lungs...and the tower is more pounding e chord than anything. no way these guys were into that. try a band like aframes who relied on a thunderous rhythm section. it isnt proggy because they can play, some of the best rhythm sections belonged to punk bands. you wont find better drummers than brian betzger or the original circle jerks short lived bass-drummer. even the Cures original bassist was nuts.
@Dave Anchovies Two Lips Two Lungs beautifully, achingly and economically explores human beings imploding due to communcation failure. Frank was an excellent satirist, but such lyrical subtlety wasn't his strong suit. Oh No Bruno is a straight up punk rock song, of which there are relatively few in their catalog. I feel they add as much complexity to punk rock as one can without the music ceasing to qualify as punk rock.
Fortunate enough to see them live 3 times as a teenager. UNBELIEVABLE LIVE!! Second half of "Dark Ages" is the best psychedelic punk rock song ever written...love the bass segue.
Greatest band from Canada ever live !! Imagine seeing them with 2 drummers on stage rocking this brilliance out . I was lucky enough to do that and slam dance to this .

This album was like a gospel of my teenage years...i was 15 when it came out, and i used to listen to it with my friends repeatedly after high school, every day for a year or two....30 years later i still know it by heart. This mastrpiece is something else...beyond comparison, out of time, one of a kind.
It's Catching Up The dead walk... Do you hear that sound? Do you hear that sound? Like fingers scratching underground Do you hear that sound? That slamming door? I've fought it all my life But I can't fight it anymore It's catching up, I'm fucked A dead duck, shit out of luck How do you hide from Something you have found? Do you hear that sound? That scratching sound? Is it better to be lost or found? You can't ignore it You can't talk it away You can't drink it away You can't fuck it away It's catching up, I'm fucked A dead duck, shit out of luck Give me aslylum, let me in I am mad, you are my only witness There are some things that never die Things that never really were alive I've shut them out I've slammed the door But I can't keep them back Anymore It's catching up, I'm fucked A dead duck, shit out of luck
The Tower The sword of truth is just another weapon Let me live for just one more second I see a woman, she's holding flowers A bouquet of roses that are blood red From a burning building, a man leaps to his death I stand above these mansions of the dead Red tombs and above us looms The tower I see red I see a tower against the sky Beneath a red unblinking eye Radiowaves curve and cross I stand below them - lost! Above me is a black obelisk And the dangers that I risk Here gather the ghosts of the mind That tear my heart and here I find All the traps that have been set Everything I would forget, beneath The tower I see red I see a tower against the sky Beneath a red unblinking eye Violence is close at hand You are damned if you do And if you don't - damned! A red eye, tyrant full of hate Glares from the sky, it's captive state If it should blink or deviate A thousand worlds would obliterate I do not move, nor do I speak Beneath that hard and pitiless peak Of concrete, steel and antennae wheels The tower I see red I see a tower against the sky Beneath a red unblinking eye
Tired Of Waiting I got tired, tired, tired of waiting Tired of waiting, waiting for news Tired of waiting for things to improve Tired of waiting, waiting for your letter Tired of waiting for things to get better I got tired, tired, tired of waiting Tired of waiting, waiting by the phone Tired of waiting here all alone Tired of waiting for something new Tired of waiting for you I got tired, tired, tired of waiting I got tired of waiting, waiting in line Tired of waiting for my clothes to dry Tired of waiting for this show to begin I got tired of waiting for my ship to come in Tired of waiting, waiting for the bus Tired of waiting for my shoes to get fixed Tired of waiting, waiting for my cheque Tired of waiting for a change in the weather Tired of waiting for the water to boil Tired of waiting for the paint to dry Tired of waiting, waiting for a sign Tired of waiting for my big break Tired of waiting for the dam to break Tired of waiting for the bombs to drop Tired of waiting and waiting and waiting I got tired of waiting for the end I got tired of waiting because I found out There's only a fine line between Biding one's time and wasting one's site Do you know what I mean? I got tired of waiting that's all
Stocktaking Are you getting what you want? And are you getting what you need? I've heard it said that love is truly sacred But nowhere is it written that it's guaranteed Who decides what will happen? And who decides who for? Is this just a crazy little game? Or is this just an ugly little war? Are you sick and tired of the same old things? Or are you happy enough? When does so much become so little? When does too little become too much? When does so much become so little? When does too little become too much?
The End Of All Things You are here I am here Fear Bound in fear We are here I see here Nothing All is clear Crystal clear Fear All that's here Pain and fear I see here Nothing Hear the angels sing This is the end of all things All is clear Nothing's here Fear What is fear? Nothing's here I see here Nothing Hear the angels sing This is the end of all things
Big Dick Like a monkey in a zoo, You're half gorilla too When you pound it with your fist And make it real stiff Big Dick Gotta cover your mistakes Your bloody out-takes So you dip it in the wine And make a holy sign Big Dick Big Dick! Come quick Big Dick! Come quick Well, you're running up a tree You're trying not to scream Then you're pounding on your chest Like you whipped the best Big Dick The rivers of the blood You've spilled have turned to mud Now the flies are buzzin' round Don't they make a loud sound Big Dick Big Dick! Come quick Big Dick! Come quick It won't be long Till those bad bits are gone It won't be long till those bad bits are gone Now we're sitting by the fire but Daddy's getting tired 'Cause he drank the whole crock Now he's got a limp cock Big Dick Big Dick! Come quick Big Dick! Come quick
Two Lips, Two Lungs And One Tongue He kept trying He kept trying But he couldn't find out Why he couldn't stop crying Only so many songs can be sung With two lips, two lungs and one tongue She kept praying She kept praying That she would understand What she was saying Only so many songs can be sung With two lips, two lungs and one tongue He kept dreaming He kept dreaming Of the day they'd realize What he was feeling Only so many songs can be sung With two lips, two lungs and one tongue

All Lies Lies are the words that I use When you look up hopefully All of the things that we feel Are a trick, a fantasy What is the end? It is love I pretend It's calling, it's calling And I'm falling, I'm falling And she said, pray to me, pray to me All the love you see, it comes from me She said, pray to me, pray to me All the love you see, it belongs to me She said, I see, I see She said, pray to me, pray to me---but it was All lies, a pack of lies It was all lies, why don't you fuck off and die It was all lies, a pack of liesIt was all lies, all lies Lies are the light and the hope In your eyes as they shine on me Tie up my hands with your chains They are bound to set me free I'm singing, I'm singing And to that I'm clinging The words that I say only drag me away And I said, pray to me, pray to me All the love you see, it comes from me I said, pray to me, pray to me All the love you see, it belongs to me I said, I see, I seeI said, pray to me, pray to me---but it was All lies . . . Lies are the hopes and the chains that have dragged me here to you All of these hopes and these chains I will gladly share with you It's raining, it's pouring The old man is snoring It's raining, it's pouring And I'm falling, I'm falling And he said, pray to me, pray to me All the love you see, it comes from me He said, pray to me, pray to me All the love you see, it belongs to me He said, I see, I see He said, pray to me, pray to me---but it was All lies...
Life In Hell Foolish girl in swelling woman Here's a blunt knife for your bosom Here's the devil's hand to shake Watch what the other tries to take Hell Life in Hell By your loving disposition You let him get into position And train his rising gun upon The cervix of your inner sun Hell Life in Hell Can you not distinguish pain? Red nail and red shame Woman, world in one complete Your heart's awake, your mind's asleep You spread your inner sun to make A den for some sly, basking snake Which burns stronger? I can't tell The gowing sun? Or fiery Hell? Hell Life in Hell
Am I Wrong Am I wrong for thinking out the box from where I stay? Am I wrong for saying that I'll choose another way? I ain't trying to do what everybody else doing Just cause everybody doing what they all do If one thing I know, how far would I grow? I'm walking down this road of mine, this road that I call home So am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real? Now am I wrong for trying to reach the things that I can't see? But that's just how I feel, that's just how I feel That's just how I feel trying to reach the things that I can't see Am I tripping for having a vision? My prediction, I'mma be on the top of the world Hope you, hope you don't look back, always do what you decide Don't let them control your life, that's just how I feel Fight for yours and don't let go, don't let them compare you, no Don't worry, you're not alone, that's just how we feel So am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real? Now am I wrong for trying to reach the things that I can't see? But that's just how I feel, that's just how I feel That's just how I feel trying to reach the things that I can't see If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong I don't wanna be right, right If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong I don't wanna be right So am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real? Now am I wrong for trying to reach the things that I can't see? But that's just how I feel, that's just how I feel That's just how I feel trying to reach the things that I can't see.
I hear very strong Black Flag/Rollins band/Melvins influences goin on here and i like it alot and the production on this album is fantastic for when it came out.
i saw them first as a two piece opening for doa back in like 84 and have seen them countless times since....believe it or not this record doesn't do them justice.

Fantastic album for sure - but my highlight is the first bonus track (while the second one is a real spoiler). Just voice and bass but what a raw intensity, lyrics that really dig deep. Much better than their later recording of State of Grace.
I saw these guys in 1986 open up for Husker Du at the University of Washington. Believe it or not, as great as both those bands are, THE U-MEN blew them both off the stage.
Wow, flashback to the 90s. I remember this album. I was stoned at the time and it went mostly over my head, but these guys were something else. Those were happy times.
Never heard this w/bonus tracks. Truly a masterpiece...the drums just don't let up, ever. Seen them live twice, the last time in 98? or '99 at Emo's in Austin, TX...I was so psyched I threw up in the sink in their bathroom. Now THAT'S music!!!
When I first got this album, my brother and I were cribbage addicts. We're talking 10-15 games per day — more if we were drinking. So my first day having this album, I had it playing on a boombox in the background while we had a match. When it got to the score calling at the end of "Oh No! Bruno!", our heads exploded. A goddamn punk song about cribbage. Fantastic.
I just discovered this by accident and it's blowing my mind! I'm on the last song and I've sat here and listened to the whole thing straight through. I can't believe this album got past me all these years. My God! This is incredible! I haven't been this excited about discovering a band in years. Wow! just wow.
Naked CIty - Naked city. (1989) (all genius; Fred Frith, Yamatsuka eye, JOhn Zorn, Bill Frisell, Wayne Horowitz, Joey Baron, Mike Patton...) Boredoms - Chocolate sintesizer.(1994?¿) Mr. Bungle - Discovolante.(1995), At Electronic Music: Squarepusher - Go plastic! ...Flanger... Burnt Friedman, Señor Coconut/Atom Heart. if like ugly Metal: FAxed Head (Trey Spruance), Secret Chiefs 3, Administrate theese "things"... Do not hear all at the same day! v: ... (:, !!!
I discovered NMN with this record in 1989. Became a huge fan since then. To me, NMN is the quintessence of punk. Intelligent, provocative, ironic, creative, technically outstanding and, yes, wild. I saw them 7 times, always worth being there. I listen to almost all kinds of music, from free jazz and experimental to doom and ska. But, at some point, I always come back here.
Saw them when they toured their endless tour for this back in the very early '90s. Probably the very best concert out of the maybe 8 or so times I saw them back then. Holland's 'The Ex' opened, an amazing double bill. The sheer intelligence of both bands was incredible. Criminally under recognized, flying permanently under the radar because their type of brilliance isn't capable of being acknowledged by the crepuscular ghouls have run the music industry these many years past.
I got this on cassette when i was about 16. I still have the tape. It truly is one of the best albums ever made.
I want this at my funeral. ( not too soon though ) .
This is an absolutely brilliant record. I can't believe that it isn't more popular. After almost thirty years it is still utterly outstanding. The playing, the songwriting, the production - still in my top three and I have listened to a lot of music from many different genres.
Ive always wanted to listen to this whole album so fkng bad on a kick ass home or car stereo so i can feel that straight bombastic bass and mids. Sounds good even on my phone, but ill bet that it fkn cranks on a system!!
Great band. This is there benchmark album. I saw them upstairs at the Boston Arms, Kentish Town in 1989. I was 18 at the time. They were the tightest sounding punk band ever! Awesome stuff...
Mmmmh!!! No Means No!!!!! Quelle belle époque!!! D'ailleurs c'était chiant parce que quand cet album est sorti il n'y avait pas vraiment d'équivalent, impossible de trouver ailleurs la même énergie que ce groupe!! Du coup on l'écoutait en boucle! Encore!! Et encore!!!
9:42-9:48!!! I have no words to accurately describe this band & album, arguably the best & most talented/creative/intelligent in punk rock. "Punk rock" doesn't even really fit, or do them justice. As if justice is needed. Wow, I'm in shock.
From "The Tower" to "Stocktaking" seguing into "The End of All things" I feel as if I have had the shit beat out of me. Such a ferocious album. It's as subtle as an ax blow to the cranium.
Vinyl sounds soooo good. Not my favorite nmn record (small parts) but this one was produced much better. Really brings me back to my childhood. Thanks man. Good upload.
Haven't heard this in about 20 years and have just been blown off the sofa. Massively inventive, fresh and fast, and as tight as an ant's love box. Absolutely top hole. That urgent, toppy bass sound is great, first invented by the great JJ Burnel.

Your welcome.
Classic album... definitely brings me back. If my memory serves me correctly: Ben Weasel got a bit of name for himself with a letter (column?) in Maximum Rock 'n Roll fanzine and specifically called out NoMeansNo for having boring songs that were too long and intricate. This was the next album and there was a sticker on it hyping how most of the songs were under 4-5 minutes. (And they were a great live band... with the drummer playing up front with the bass and guitar - but playing sideways - at least when they played NJ all those years ago.)
Saw them live past year, they're just awesome, don't even hesitate to catch them, they're great musicians, and great peoples too, never seen happier musicians on stage !
I was turned onto this album over 28+ years ago by a friend of a friend named Brian S. Was totally blown away. F'n raddest sound I had ever heard. Just rediscovered it and it sounds even better now. 🎸🎶❤
Played this a lot when I was in my late teens/early twenties. Saw them live at Nottingham Marcus Garvey in 1990 - epic! Loved the music. Came back to it 25 years later, finally started to understand the lyrics!
This is the only band I look back on and seeing Rush and this band share the same style. Nomeansno was Never popular. The talent is there and ahead of its time.
NomeansNo had their days, not really popular but not underground either ... now that you´re comparing it to Voivod and looking back at the mid/late 80s when I was into both bands , both had solid fanbases, they just weren´t any Metallica but they sure weren´t too underground either . Both on the edge , neither ever broke up into the Soundgarden, Sonic youth mainstream type of audiences . Do not think they were obscure in the late 80s though cause neither one nor the other weren´t ... just very specific audiences . People who weren´t so much into " instant gratification " as they were into musicality and longevity ... I mean, almost 30 years later there´s not many albums I can say I enjoy more than "Nothingface" ... actually can´t come with one off the top of my head as I type this ... mood also plays a role in these things, obviously .
This ALBUM is truely A MASTERPIECE!!! im still listening to it after soooooooooo many years and I still cant believe how can it be possible to create something like this. INCREDIBLY AMAZING. THANKS NO MEANS NO!!!
Great Album...I spent many hours listening and reading the album insert. Also around this time I was listening to The Victims Family, Scratch Acid, The Jesus Lizard, Cop Shoot Cop, Rapeman, Big Black... The list could go on. To many good bands to name them all, But NoMeansNo was one of the best.
I feel bad for anyone who hasn't seen this band live. I've been into them for at least 25 years, been to 15+ shows, and this is exactly what it sounds like. So fucking good!
i´ve seen them 1st time live in 2000, they rocked the shit out of the crowd, for a fist full of d-marks they gave us over 2 hours full throttle and a WALL OF SOUND, hard to describe, bassline on "rags and bones" hypnotize me :) until this point the concert of my life, 3 days "sickness" after that was more than worth it, ****ing great 3>
Same! Well, I grew up in northern alberta, so I got a hold of Voivod a little earlier. When I moved to Calgary, the first cool cats I met (they were also big into Voivod) showed me Nmeansno. I was blown away. still am.
@Genre Slur I did not notice how similar both bands are until a year later (1991) I played Nomeansno to a couple metal/grunge guys and they mentioned Voivod sounding similar. They said NMN were the punk version of Voivod. I got into both these bands at around the same time (a couple months maybe) and did not notice. Duh.
ThePaperPrince -cool, I never knew that. I’ve talked to Rob a couple times, his influences that I know of are kind of surprising, but not entirely. He’s one of MY personal influences, not only artistically, but sonically and gearwise.
One of my personal favorite albums of all time, "Wrong" is a masterpiece from start to finish and should be required listening for anyone into punk, post-hardcore, or technical drumming and bass playing,...............
i have to agree
God forgive me, I haven't listened to this album in years & it is so damned good. I had been to busy listening to all their other stuff as this was always their most accessible album for the non NMN fan, a pioneer album in what we then called the pop punk world but just a little better (musically) than most. Also one of the best live bands I ever saw on each tour that I saw (Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Whistler. People say they broke up but really they retired and deserve the rest after kicking ass from 1979 -2013. (I know they announced the quit in 2016 but that's because they took their time, last time I know that they played was 2013, not including the Vancouver music hall of fame ceremony) I must listen to this more often. I still know every note on this record though...thanks poster!!
thanks for posting, i havent heard this in ages! So good ! saw them live back in the 90's in Edinburgh, prol for the tour for this album, they were awesome live ;)
I saw them in Bristol at the Bierkeller with crane & nerve rack supporting. I can't remember the support at all, they may well of been good bands for all I know. NoMeansNo played all of wrong it was one of the best gigs I have ever been to, there tightness complexity & intensity blue my mind, even tho I was smashed & got punched in the face before thay played. It was on Thursday 12th September, I was 15 or 16 I think it was 89 or 90 its definitely the right date because I have a poster but it doesn't have the year on it. I have the record but it is nice to not have to get up & flip it or stop my deck. Cheers for the upload.
I saw this album in recommended videos and had no idea what musical style it would be or when it was released. I decided to listen only by the name of the band and damn, what a good surprise!
Wow forgot all about this album. Had this as a teen, I believe it was stolen by a sk8r “friend” who also took all my MDC and Angry Samoans records. Thanks for the rediscovery 🖤🖤
Punk evolved... Did it evolve more after this? Brutal, furious, disturbing, sophisticated, well played and real.. NomeansNo. NOW WHERE CAN I GET A MASK LIKE THIS???
Alex Zith punk evolved far past this album. In fact, for experimental punk this album was pretty grounded in punk's sound. It's recognizable as hardcore. Try out the Cardiacs - Sing to God, the Blood Brothers - ... Burn Piano Island, Burn!, if you want post/art punk that came out after this and stuff before this that's good are the Fall, This Heat, No Trend, DNA, Foetus, Wire, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, James Chance and the Contortions, I could probably go on for hours with examples.
Alex Zith of course not all of those bands go as hard as NoMeansNo DO, but they all carry that same vein of progression past punk's boundaries. Post Punk in its purest form.
did u know they took the name from a anti-rape date campaign...??

I knew a toxically masculinist dude in college that actually hated this band because of their name. Of course he is an artisanally barbered meme-person today.
my favourite too. always tried to figure out, when i was kid, what the fuck they were doing to make my chest fall jnto my belly with that simple transition
Been listening to a rap for the majority of the past two years, but man this brings back a very specific feeling I've only ever found with punk of this caliber.
NoMeansNo, an animal unto itself. Incomparable. This album is a masterpiece. They could have just dropped the mic right there. The best thing most people never heard of.
This would've easily been a staple for me as a teen. I can't believe I've never heard of them before now. WTH!!! I can easily say I will never understand how not 1 friend of mine turned me on to this back in the day. NOT ONE!
This appeared on my suggestions n I instantly sensed potential greatness purely from the album cover. Then heard the first 20 seconds n BLAM!....This sounds right up my street. Big Faith No More, Bungle n Rollins listener. This has the same spirit. Fucking quality. 😁😁😋
I'd always heard of them, and only heard the song No Fgunick on the Short Music comp. This came up after listening to Firehose, and GODDAMN what an album!
I saw these guys when I was 21 at Newcastle in England im now 44 an I still say this lp is the greatest thing to happen to America since someone attacked pearl harbour :))) 3 guys 1 guitar 1 drums 1 bass what more do ya need these guys prove it :)))
+Ryan Mahon yes the band is from Victoria British Columbia Canada ., I went to High School with 1 of the band members in the 70s ,They started in the late 70s playing with groups like DOA, Subhuman's, Dayglo Abortions ,and other bands from the Vancouver BC and Seattle Washington areas in clubs and Halls all over.
I've been listening to this album since I was a little kid and until now, I always thought that in the chorus of 'it's catching up' It said "It's catching uuuuup, I fucked, a dead duck, sheer luck!"
Got to see them live 3 times, the first was when Wrong came out. They were bigger in Europe I think, but never got the recognition they deserve. If this album had been released in the times of Social Media things would be different - ~700k views just for this posting of the album on youtube! Some times I'll read that a well known musician will site them as a big influence, but I'll never understand why they didn't take off more. Live they were amazing, one cohesive unit like on their albums and a great sense of humor.
They had a concert tour towards small clubs in Belgium in the 90's. I saw them 5 or more times, that was cool. Drunk some beer with the band. Different times... :D
oh man, i had never heard the track "End of the World" it's wild how it sounds like a pre-cursor to Neutral Milk Hotel. A connection I never would have drawn between those two bands.
Anyone know why Oh No Bruno wasn't included on The People's Choice? Surely that's everyone's favourite - the ladies at the Setting Sun Retirement Centre certainly think so...

wonderful to listen to, if not for it's reductionistic negation of all total-a-fying forces. negation lives out it's existence as instruments battle for dominance, and a crude whisper of death permeates all.
It's 10.44am in the UK brother recommended this to me last night I'm only into the 3rd song fucking loving it how did I not know about these I love Primus Mr bungle biohazard and lots of other shit but yeah banging ...thank you brother
Also only just 'got' this band! Although I've had this album on a CD-R for ages, sounds like Rollins early Black Flag crossed with Dead Kennedys! Cool Shit!!!
i saw these guys 22 yrs ago. i know some young "punk rockers" n when i show them nmn they shit themselves. timeless, progressive, way ahead of their time
Thanks for posting. I'm 43 and never gave em a chance. Glad I did just now. I used to see ads in old MRR but back then I was into powerviolence/grind core. When I recommend different sounding bands to young punk recruits I recommend the Minutemen, Husker Du, Saccharine Trust, Drive Like Jehu etc. Have a good day! And thanks!
Randomly stumbled across this while eating Wendy's, holy fuck this is good. The entire album is great as fuck. I gotta listen to more of these guys, Christ.
IDK man. They never got the exposure they deserved. I come from the same island they do, and even I never heard of 'em. I was a big fan of the Dead Kennedys back in the day, and spotted "Jello Biafra with Nomeansno: The Sky is Falling & I Want My Mommy" on cassette tape in a music store. I bought the album, and heard Nomeansno for the first time (kickass album, btw). Then eventually I learned they're from Victoria, and I'd been missing out on local shows. I felt cheated. You ought to check out their alter-ego band, The Hanson Brothers. It's more of punk-rock parody poking fun at the Canadian hockey fan stereotype. Good shit.
For over 30 years these geniuses have simply shat out the bad and boring constraints found in both prog and hardcore. For those about to rock, we salute NOMEANSNO.
Actually from what I can gather this album was first released with only 11 tracks, "Life in Hell" and "I Am Wrong" were added on one of the earlier rereleases. With this newest remaster they also added tracks 14 and 15. So there are either 2 or 4, depending on which version of the original album you are comparing the remaster to.
This album is the Mount Everest in a flat landscape. It was like a fucking bible to me all the years. No one, NO ONE could reach them till the end of time. Amen.
what can you say about these guys..of all the hundreds of bands i saw in the 80s and 90s [and yes we were all in bands}i first discovered these guys through my A.T mailing list in about '87 or so and got their ep;s /lp;s etc....but didnt get to see them until 95 i think...when you realise this is three people it makes you weep which is exactly what i did for the first 10 min..holy shit,i am 3 feet away from no means no....they were wonderful tears of joy...fuck'n beserk..all three were lined up at the front of the stage...drums side on then git and bass..crazy awesome//////thankyou so much for coming to oz guys...lurv always...tymsup
Jesus fucking Christ, those basslines. It shouldn't be possible to play basslines that are SOOO precise and funky at the same time. I can only imagine what playing those basslines can do to a bassist's fingers, lol.
Didn't discover this band/record until around 2004. But no radio station was playing anything worth listening to back in the day. I've seen NoMeansNo live about 4 times and they always brought the thunder. Hope they come back some day.
i just came here by accident, and by curiosity in searching for old-time music gems and definitely i was no wrong..... Btw is it my impression or S.O.A.D. had totally RIPPED OFF this band???? song structures have many striking resemblances!!!!
Holy shit, this is what the Jesus Lizard and the Minutemen would have sounded like if they got merged The Fly style. And one of them was holding a mixtape that had some black flag and metallica on it.
saw the jesus lizard on their one-time reunion tour and they were one of the best acts i've ever seen - I saw radiohead, grizzly bear, butthole surfers, skinny puppy and porcupine tree in that year or so span as well ...still i think nomeansno would have been an even better show.
+Unwelcome Human I think I stumbled across one of your videos a couple of days ago, it was a cardiacs live video where you put a load of visuals on like the little man from the album cover, recognized your name on here. Hi. this Nomeansno band seem pretty good, cardiacs are still the best though
Possibly the best Canadian punk album ever. I was a big metal-head back in the 80's (and still am) but this blew me away- great songwriting, arranging, and amazing riffs and playing.
one thing that always gets to me is that another Lard album could have been made... ugh, you can look up the full story... but the short version is... we were close!
Joyful depression. The lyrics take you down one of the darkest personal rabbit holes available as the music lifts you up enough to realize that hope is unnecessary to complete the journey as it is the journey that makes it all worthwhile. Existentialist punk. One of my fave albums too. Cecil English makes it sound so crisp and live, love it.
Ever see one of those albums in your recommendations that you just keep passing up until one night you say fuck it, and click play, only to get knocked on your ass?
That's this album. That's what happened to me. Fuck this kills.
1. It's Catching Up 0:00 2. The Tower 3:28 3. Brainless Wonder 8:40 4. Tired of Waiting 10:11 5. Stocktaking 12:00 6. The End of All Things 15:05 7. Big Dick 20:16 8. Two Lips, Two Lungs and One Tongue 23:29 9. Rags and Bones 25:16 10. Oh No! Bruno! 30:20 11. All Lies 33:25 12. Life in Hell 39:49 13. I Am Wrong 43:45
Discovered this in 2012 or 13 from a recommendation, and I played the shit out of it for about three years til some asshole stole my iPod w/ all my old music. Gdi, this is one of the albums I miss the most, also if anyone wants smore of this good shit check out the album they did w/ Jello Biafra called The Sky Is Falling & I Want My Mommy. Not AS good, but it's a solid collab.
Oh my God! I just discovered this band , and I love It ! After "End of the World" I was like , ok what's the next song ? And then I noticed that the album ended.
this was huge in my highschool when it came out, but much later in life I really only like the earlier stuff. and I don't find it that technical either. maybe by punk standards, but it's defintely not in league with prog
This band sounds like if King Crimson had kids that turned into hardcore punks...music I wished existed and it's been here all the time. I love youtube
Um...what in the hell were those two last atrocities? Until now, I thought everything they did was gold. Those two live ones were awful. Much love for the band though. Love all the rest.
So I've managed to totally ignore this band for 30 odd years, remember the name but never gave it a spin. I'm impressed. I became jaded and very picky by 1986 thus , overlooked a lot of bands, some of which I still can't stand .. ahemfugazi... Fuck Fugazi. Right in the ear. Never liked minutemen either. This band is quality shit though. Not too unlike Bl'ast with the King Crimson sorta thing. To vent some more , the whole "grown-up" rock thing everyone was doing in the late 80's was lame, I hated every minute of it , I hated even partying with the older punks cuz all they played was Fugazi and former hardcore bands that were now playing punk tinged rock cuz be there was girls coming over and well, Poison Idea, Excel, and Wasted Youth weren't conducive to getting laid. Im like whatever, have fun with your Love & Rockets. Off to Mike's liquor for some Old E, Mickey's, Schlitz malt. 🎶I wanna stay young until I die🎶
State of grace: the alien Wright brothers + the furious Andy Kerr.... The result is higly intelligent, nervous and irrepetible. This album changed my life (for worse:)
What have you been listening to that gave you that impression? I could probably point you in the direction of some more technical punk/punk-inspired music
@Liam Keane Because it aint rock and roll .. in my opinion. It aint punk either.. hence poppy punk poop... or pop punk.. its a derogatory term.. its not like people aim to be pop punk... well at least I hope they dont! lol
@Liam Keane You wouldnt believe the people who call themselves punk today! Its ridiculous! Moreover, its funny how todays punk scene is infiltrated by liberal politics! If a band hates george bush, a pack of kids hates george bush. Why not hate bush and clinton! They cannot think for themselves, which is what being punk is all about!
@6laderunner Idk I always dismissed Bad Brains because it sounded like standardized punk... but do they use their jazz training and incorporate it into their music? Is there a good example of this? NMN has more of an avant garde touch to it.. which is what made me like the band... havent heard all their stuff but this album has some good songs because of the way they compose their music... im aware the above was a loose and crappy attempt at saying what I mean.
I dont know guys....checked out Bad Brains - ok. Big Black - ok, barkmarket - ok, but nothing like these guys - they have that avant garde sort of touch with punk... its fuckin awesome! Gotta check out the rest you guys posted...
@bishop101010 Its a little softcore tho...the first track on 13 songs was ok... but then the tracks started getting a little... not punk. recommend an album? Their music is good but... idk... a little softcore...
@***** Die Kreuzen, Ramones, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, actually Ramones have simple guitar but if you watch he plays most of the time only on the down stroke....simple but far from lazy.
I don't know if Greg Ginn was necessarily jazz trained, but I know he grew up next to a jazz club and he said it influenced him. So that's another one you can probably add.....
Its not being lazy, its simplicity. Most people arent gifted shreddeea worth millions of dollars and own expensive guitars , its the simple act of doing what YOU WANT how YOU want to do it. Not Sweeping a scale isnt lazy, ill choose passion and feeling over robotic sounding music
@Pabs Correa Passion and feeling have always begun with learning scales... since the classical music era- they didnt just rub a bow across the strings and then said to themselves - who cares what paganini did - mine still sounds great from a subjective standpoint... subjectivity in music is ridiculous - thats why we have madonna - taylor swift - jay z- insert endless list here
@***** i agree with knowledge can also be passion. One does not overshadow the other. But what im saying a lot of punk bands start off not knowing what the fuck chord they are playing, it jjust sounds great to them.you dont have to know how to read "toilet" to figure out how to take a shit. And who is talking about those illuminati puppets. ? They dont concern me one bit what they do.
@Pabs Correa People who feel like music has no standard and so long as it sounds good to them - it is good, such people like the aforementioned - they will defend their music by saying its my music and it sounds good... but there should be a standard in all music...
@Pabs Correa Srry, wasnt clear.. those are the "illuminati puppets" I refer to whom justify their crappy music - mainstream music often has no standards and is subjective - like the puppets if you want to call them that
+StaySkeptic thats why i like Television, all the complexity of art rock but the rawness of punk in the playing. kind of why i can't stand solo albums by world-renowned shredders that just have clinical session musicians behind them lol
Explore post punk some more, you're in part correct but also a bit wrong. Punk's roots were in musical simplicity with raw aggression. Punk and hardcore were in general composed of 3 chord song structures played fast and loud. Simplicity, But feel and speed. However, many artists like NoMeansNo, Fugazi, The Fall, the Pop Group, No Trend, The Cardiacs, Blood Brothers, X, James Chance and the Contortions/Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and basically every post punk act under the sun exist to use punks basic ethos, style and theory with experimentalism. Thus you'll get albums like this that fuse the energy of punk with actually interesting and well written/structured/played music.
@Rectangularification well my knowledge of music has grown considerably since five years ago. lol. I believe in my 16 year old brain I was referring to bands like Green Day and Offspring which are terrible of punk examples. I have tried older punk and it's not for me. NoMeansNo is by far my favorite punk band still though.
I just have to say, when I posted this comment five years ago...my God I am getting old, I was a stupid 16 year old. Now, I am a stupid 21 year old whose knowledge of punk is still to be of desire, I can entirely refute my comment as I realize that pop punk sucks ass and technical stuff like this should be, and always will be real punk. I also have to say I was expecting a lot more backlash when I revisited this post and I was thoroughly impressed there was a sensible conversation sprung my insensible comment. Rock on broheims.
technically this has 4 bonus tracks (last 4) ....ironically the song "I Am Wrong" wasnt on this album, it was released on the EP "The Power Of Positive Thinking". Good to know this bastardised version is your favourite album of all time. The last 2 songs arent worthy of this album, and actually do an injustice to the original album
Is the album cover influenced by 'World of Genius Hans' by Moving Gelatine Plates, do u think? It's pretty cool. music sounds fucking great as well, my good discovery of the day.
Fundamental disagreement: not only so many songs can be sung, there is a an effective infinitude of songs that could be possibly sung with 2 lips 2 lungs and 1 song or whatever the hippy punks said, we can keep on multiplying sings for fucking ever really
Ok hear! (s.) The breakthrough!!! Don't worry about getting called. . . .by (positive) people. . . . too negative. Negative originally means "NO" Nomeansno!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kiss-Horváth Ferenc well then. Your real, full name, sounds brutal when I say it out loud and it gives me much pleasure when I read it. And Primus sucks. : D
I put my money on these guys against Rush in terms of musicianship any day, no question, and Rush are great instrumentalists but that's just a testament to the otherworldly playing that these guys do
@Colin Smith the big nosed hippie was pretending to screech, bass and keyboard like a Barnum and Bailey side show while a guy was playing Roland and Sony keyboards behind the stage.
Rush is still pretty good, and their songs deserve the length. Rush wouldn't have as much musical freedom if their songs were restricted to 4 minutes or less...
@***** I agree with that description but would add that Nomeansno's music is quite a bit more melodic as well. As for none of their other album's matching Wrong I would say that "Mr. Happy" is just as consistent and certainly its best moments are as great if not greater- "The River", ect.
Im 40 yo ffs...how the fuck is this the first time I've ever heard of nomeansno!! What. the. fuck. What a pleasant surprise.. I've got some catching up to do
+hexonatapeloop what was the troutmask replica argument you had about? I been arguing with a few ppl on youtube about that album as well. I got accused of sounding pretentious when I said you got to be intelligent in order to understand it, otherwise you are gonna think it is nonsense andshit. Hella are pretty cool as well.
+FAST N BULBOUS Because it took 100% genius and like 2years practise to record that album. Every note in place, as planned. The Captain WOULD NOT Allow his instrumentalists ANY freedom. They had to play (like an orchestra composer I suppose,) exactly what where when how he instructed for that one. Naysayers should grab 3friends w no talent, hire a studio and Compare...... :) Art vs Music. Age-old arguement material!!!!!
Thanx for the reminder of Victim's Family!!!...haven't listened to them in about 18 years but am definitely gonna try to find some of their stuff on YouTube now (fingers crossed...)
welcome aboard !!!!! look up nomeansno " tuck it away ," its a great tune ,
nomeansno has a side band called THE HANSON BROS. they sing about chicks and hockey in a ramones vein, they are also very good
I don't see the comparison, other than both bands have the bass right up front (and rightfully so) in the mix. Live, this drives old farts of sound engineers batty, and they invariably fuck it up: find Primus' "Winona's Big Brown Beaver" as seen live on Letterman: it sounds terrible, because the engineer (whose career high point was probably doing sound for Seals & Croft) had Claypool's bass muddy and turned way down. Claypool is an easygoing guy, but if I was him, I'd have walked of stage and gone for the engineer's skull with my bass, not even changing out of my penguin costume first. But the styles are too disparate: Claypool prefers 5 and 6-string bass, and plucks, strums, and slaps. Rob Wright is a high-speed pick player like Chris Squire from Yes. Even their basic song structures are too far removed from each other; it's like saying the Dead Kennedys were influenced by Link Wray --- actually, given East Bay Ray's twangy/surf guitar style, that's not an unfair comparison. But overall, you can't compare the two, or say NoMeansNo is "better" than Primus (or vice versa) because there's so much disparity between the two bands there's no way to find any common ground.
Maybe, but I don't think directly. However the first no means no song I ever heard had me exclaim "this sounds like Primus" seconds into the song. I dont recall which song it was. I do know it was on one of their later releases.
Dean Du Pont I do believe though that they are are both SF Bay area bands. I'd be astounded if both didn't borrow little bits here and there as they must have been aware of each other and their stuff is too cool to not be inspired by each other for somebody to not want to know "how the fuck did he do THAT? Gotta figure it out".
I appreciate your diplomacy, but I'll be less than diplomatic--Nomeansno is better--much better. I also saw each of them live exactly once, and NMN was phenomenal, while Primus was...actually prettty boring live. I do rather like the "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" album, though, but not nearly as much as several of the NMN albums. To each their own, though.
this is post hardcore. not punk, i think the only reason people are bringing up bad brains here is because they are probably the only hardcore band that had the skills to play something like this. perhaps the minutemen could have , but they were not a hardcore band.. either way this is fucking incredible. fugazi is damn good.. sure, but there is no way they could play this. oh and victims family? = minutemen acolytes.
If you are from Generation X, and the events of the past year has not inspired you to listen to this album at least once, then you are a type of person I do not naturally understand. Agree to disagree.
Yes, but it wasn't their first output and also...you talking about social hardcore punk or SoCal (Southern Californian) as I'm pretty sure was meant with the original post I commented on. Fact remains that this band predated most of even the majority of the "original" hardcore bands and therefore most likely did the influencing rather then the other way around. NoMeansNo never sounded like any other band to start with.
Who are these 41 people that don't like the best band that's ever came from Victoria bc they where in an issue of guitar player magazine 🤐 even dead BOB still likes them 😈
Of course, the Minutemen are great. The band they formed after D Boone died was good too, they're fIREHOSE. Also, check out Fugazi if you haven't already. Thing is, this band is a very unique sound. Hard to find similar ones.
Your description gets no argument from me. I know they played a Jazz festival or two (which I found funny because I used to describe them as Jazz-Punk because I couldn't come up with a genre, and "post-punk" didn't do them justice.)
bass sounds awesome The guitar though is a little tiny and weak sounding. They should have got a better sound engineer unless that was the sound the guitarist was going for
I recall crab fishing with Mark from D.A from Victoria. Interesting person. Blind as a bat. Damn good crab fisher. That was a fun day him and I. But he knew Hamilton and Toronto's music beat. Hope to meet him again someday.
this is great,to buy this album/cd is more or less very is hard ! one more thing to add!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! did or has anyone listened to lighting bolt! the band that has been going for 20yrs and didnt find them , my personal opion, they are all of the musik ive listen to in one whole ras clot relentless chorus............thankyou them...
I don't understand the hate on Jello Biafra. There's alot of it in some places so it has to have at least some sort of argument for it. All I can see is that DK broke up, he got the AT label, and he's been using it to print records for some of the best punk bands, despite losing money on it, while East Bay Ray would eventually start commercialising DK. So who fucked who? Who screwed who?
@Saturn Moriya I <3 Biafra. I sent away to the Universal Life Church for a press pass just so I could sneak into the front row for one of his spoken word performances. Having said that, he is not 100% likeable or perfect, and has stepped on a toe or two in his time. He also has a penchant for exaggeration, something less forgiving people might call being "a liar". Not trying to besmirch his character; just offering possible reasons why some people have no room for Jello.
I hear a bit of late 70s Australia "X" mixed with Canadian water/lead chips (actually, ive been listening to this band since the early 90s and never thought anything of who to compare them to...im not big on the jazzier stuff, but so what?: https://youtu.be/kqY4RQ_WrF8 [X-Aspirations] listen to that bass-drum-guitar beauty...and they aint no Fugazi or post hardcore math prog bore-core...cant a band be its own beast without a million people trying to dissect and label it?

Wellll.......this album is new to me......I like it, so far. I've avoided it for over 20 years......haha. How you're gonna compare this to bad brains, I dunno? Totally different styles. But I'm glad you said yer piece
@Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub They're not comparable. I was enjoying this album until I read someone below saying that this is better than BB, and that kinda turned me off to this. I'm sorry, but come on, saying this is better than Bad Brains is like saying Rambo II is better than Saving Private Ryan. It's a dumb comparison, and it legit boggles my mind. To each his own and yada yada, but even I have my limits

3 likesThis album Wrong was so far ahead of its time. This math rock hardcore stuff could easily be mistaken for something out of the late 90's or 00's. Does this really sound like something that was recorded in the 80's? This may be one of the most underrated bands ever.

What bands sound like this? Especially from the 00's?

2 likesIf it was 83 sure, but it's 89, the year 13 Songs by Fugazi came out. They were very earIy on in the styIe, but by no means they were so ahead of time Iike your perceptions suggest.

3 likesNOMEANSNO is not 'underrated' they are obscure.
5 likesthere were other bass heavy post hardcore punk bands going at the time- but nomeanso were on alternative tentacles at the height of that label’s success (and prior), and you could actually get their records- bands like Ruins (from japan) were doing crazy, tightly composed bass driven noise rock as well during the era that this came out, as well as pre Man is the Bastard bands Cyclops and Pissed Happy children.
12 likes@br3t0 thank you, this is great sound

0 likesIt is such a fantastic album. As someone above pointed out: not so much underrated, since most people who know it will sing its praises, but not as well known as it should be. I wouldn't go so far as to call it obscure.
0 likes@Wicked Lee honestly, I feel like there's a definite minutemen influence in this album

1 like@Mark Preston true, can't remember anyone back then saying "gee, that band surely sucks!". Most folks weren't used to this high level of musicianship in the punk scene but they got enough props.
0 likes@Wicked Lee all bands that started in the 80s btw
0 likes@Wicked Lee all in the same era... i saw victimsfamily together with nomeansno AND Alice donut
1 likeWell, THAT depends on WHAT your thinking of by 80s music.
1 like@lotusflowerdeathstar Jello had a technical guitarist in DK named 6025. listen to his songs...Forward to Death, Ill in the Head...Straight A's...he left and became a prog musician who is rumored to have been in the mysterious Residents. he was gone after FreshFruit with the original drummer, and they never topped that album//early singles...the 5 piece was totally unique and never the same, as they fell into the hardcore sound soon after. this is NoMeansNo not overdoing the jazzy stuff...powerful, punk and what music writers call "angular"..but some songs are punk blasters. their best, imo. Hanson Brothers are awesome, too...way more powerful than Fugazi who were kinda boring after awhile. apples and Oranges. organic. of course.
1 like@kollo duke hell yeah
0 likescheck out some of the Big Boys (Texas punk band who flirted with funk and covered Kool and the Gang...).
1 likeRapeman did their debut in ‘88 man. It’s a good album but by no means is it a first for the genre. scratch acid was also around
2 likes@lotusflowerdeathstar This isn't Nomeansno's first album...
0 likesAn arbitrary timeframe measured in units of ten doesn't create music, human beings do.
0 likesi always liked this one because it was getting away from the previous albums jazzy-math songs...just because they could play doesnt make it mathy. its more straight forward punk. Big Boys, Minutemen were examples of bass heavy punk that were bands that could really play well. i think NoMeansNo really peaked here, thats not to say they went down...but this one is just unstoppable...song after song, no let up.
0 likes@lazarus_85 its not math...maybe some stuff before it, but its just well played bulldozer punk. (i just made that up). Its unique, but they werent reinventing the wheel. they could play better than most, but they werent an island.
0 likes@KOBKED-X hell yeah. check out the enigmatic (rick "didjit" sims couldnt hide that voice) Lee Harvey Oswald Band "A Taste of Prison" and "Blastronaut" lps on Touch and Go
1 like@kollo duke hell yeah!
0 likes@Mike Graham Clockcleaner, AFrames...late 70s aussies X have a heavy bass/drum sound. they dont sound the same, but are unique sounding that rely on the rhythm section while the guitar/vocals are free to do their own thing. Lamps, too.
0 likesmay be?!
0 likesI've never heard these guys before. You're right, this is from the 80s? That's crazy. It reminds me of like a combination between minutemen and Dead Kennedys. I'm only on the first track though.
0 likes@Dan M Keep going dude. You'll find they're punks and prophets. This is some real shit here! I would LOVE to be where you are right now, hearing nomeansno for the first time. I'm genuinely excited for you dude!
1 likeI agree, this sounds more at home with the late 90s post hardcore scene
0 likesThis one came out in early 90s but I understand your sentiment
0 likes@William Stamper this came out in 1989
0 likes@aye b0ss 1989 still means recorded in the 80s. At my age, actual dates and time tend to flow together. I'm not trying to split hairs, just trying to point out this album was ahead of its time. Years later it was almost as if certain musicians were directly influenced by NoMeansNo.
0 likesas others have said in this comment thread, this sound to me is mid-80s and I wouldn't put this album as "ahead of its time" as nomeans no was doing things similar to this for the entirety of the 80s. check out "you kill me" ep, there were a lot of bands doing the same thing. check the bands that played with them. a lot a parallels to the chicago / louisville / dc scene
0 likesThey beat Systom to it! Great album! Great Canadian band! Got another one! Canada churns out the artists! It's the cold eh!
0 likesI cant speel
0 likesHow the FUCK did these guys not take over the entire world?? "Rags and Bones" and "The End of All things" are seriously two of the greatest songs ever. The whole album is excellent. 0 likesNomeansno, Minuteman, Firehose, Primus, Mr Bungle, Infectious Grooves, Tortoise, Slint, Shellac, really took the attention from frontmen and guitarists, and switched it to the rhythm section...and also how else you could employ the band combo, the Genre based format, into something totally original... it feels like today folks just gave up...

2 likesStill one of my favourite bands if not the favourite.

@JONATHAN SUTCLIFFE wat
1 like@JONATHAN SUTCLIFFE To birg or not to birg, that is the question.
2 likesDon't worry, I don't really think this way, I did yesterday, but not today. Do you know why they call me Mr Happy?
I clicked on this out of curiosity, the music held my interest long enough for me to finish the whole album, damn intense!

0 likesThey didn't break up they just quit music
0 likesIn my humble opinion NMN are the greatest post hardcore band in history. Yes, I even consider them better than Fugazi and ATDI. Although, Mr Happy is personally my favorite album by them, not Wrong. Wrong is nothing short amazing though.
6 likesyou can see clearly now :)
0 likesYep --- please let me know who ATDI is tho.... I probably know but not by that initialism.
1 likeAt The Drive In
2 likesThey officially broke up and will no longer tour, after 30 years of almost constant touring :( Saw them like 10 times.
6 likesHanson Brother (band) was a fun off-shoot for them... PUCK ROCK!
1 likethey are remarkably underappreciated. i've seen them several times, always as opening bands for punk standards, and they were always the best set. like, by far. i suspect the technically impressive musicianship and sorta eggheadish (at times) lyrics set them apart from punk as a whole. you almost have to qualify their type of punk, though i refuse to do so.
3 likes2018 -& I’m only hearing this now wow 😮 as a bass player & a human with ears, I’m just so embarrassed
5 likesi was brought into a Jazz/Punk/Improv band about 9 yrs ago and the Bass player/band leader made me listen to these guys and I had the same reaction as you. how can one of the most important bands of all time go completely ignored ?!?
3 likesWrong is the type of album that has a "before" and an "after". The kind you remember hearing for the first time.
1 likeFor me it was summer of 95, at the end of a concert/party in a field somewhere.

0 likes@seejayunderscore dude they're just NoMeansNo, an animal unto itself. Incomparable. This album is a masterpiece, they could have just dropped the mic right there.

+revalesq Not entirely sure if it can be considered a punk album , but musically best album of the time would be This Heat Deceit. I've just stumbled across this album just now and it sounds fucking awesomethough, got to say.
9 likes+FAST N BULBOUS , WRONG has aged very well and. I got it when it was first released, but when it was released it was very much considered a punk rock record.
7 likes+Stephen Reeder Besides fast n bulbous - I've never met anyone who would not call nomeansno punk.
8 likes@misternylon yeah I know This heat aren't in the same vein at all, fuck it though i said it, i don't care. the cardiacs do some good progressive punk tracks, make sure u hear them. they are the best band of all.
3 likes+FAST N BULBOUS Not saying This Heat aren't great because they totally are, but considering your profile picture is Deceit I'm gonna have to call you a fanboy, just sayin. also imo This Heat's first album was better
1 like@Contrariwise37 yeah I guess i'm a fanboy and yeah 1st album equally as good as Deceit, hard to pick which is best, cheers.
1 like+revalesq "no control" though
0 likesThis is pretty damn awesome, but I'm gonna have to go with The Shape of Punk to Come musically.
9 likesOOOH- haven't heard it! >>>runs off to look it up...
1 likeArguably too progressive to really be punk. Post punk, kinda like the DK. Enough staples to really cement them into the hardcore scene but much like plastic surgery disasters it has too many experimental qualities to really be true punk.
2 likesIf labels are that important then technically it's a Post-Hardcore band. It has the same intensity of a hardcore band, but technically more complex and diverse in sound.
2 likesPost punk and post hardcore are really essentially the same genre. Both Hardcore and Punk Rock were limited to the same self imposed rules, post punk is really just a larger umbrella term than post hardcore.
1 likeI'd have to give that honor to talking heads 77
0 likesNo, it's very very good, but Big Black is the GOAT my young friend. Steve Albini knows how to coax the most punk out of anyone...
1 likeWhat did you think of the Shape of Punk to come?
0 likesfugazi - in on the kill taker
0 likesIt’s all punk rock really.
0 likesNo. But top 20.
0 likes@Ancala Bond ummm... sure 🤣
0 likesHonestly, I thought this was the best when it came to punk until I heard of a Japanese band called Bleach03.
1 likeStill such an amazing album.
The fact that it's not on any other music streaming platform is a crime. It's so good.

2 likesI love the lyrics of this band. And love the bass, drums, lead & rhythm section.
2 likesIt's great to see that this album has well over a million views. No Means No wasn't one of the world's more famous punk bands, but they were one of the very best, and this album was their masterpiece. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to see some of their live shows, which were as tight and as energetic as those of the Ramones.

0 likes@Szymon Nowak I have met them several times in the 90s when I lived in Vancouver. My roomates were on the Wrong Records label and they did a couple of tours with them. My ex-boyfriend owned the studio and actually recorded some of their 7inch records. Very nice guys. Sad that they retired, because musically, they are one of the most talented musicians in punk history
2 likesThe Hansons are wicked...I've seen them play a few times...makes me proud to be Canadian
2 likesThe most amazing thing about nomeansno is how long they have continued to create great music for. IMO all of their albums are good, and they are still amazing live today. How the fuck can this album have 42 thumbs down? Idiots!

5 likesI agree Mr Kobked,no one like them.Legends.
3 likes@Francesco Tomasin I mean it's all subjective of course but for me and many of my friends, who grew up with NoMeansNo in our literal backyard/hometown, they saved my life in many ways, I can never thank them enough for the depth they shared so vibrantly! Saw them first in a shithole [much loved shit hole mind you] The Rats Nest, they played with Black Flag and some other band.. I was a kid still, age 14, they changed my life and then gave it back. When I did my first live performance for pay, I used their song Getting Started as my backdrop./walkout music, love them as if they were family, and they are in a way
3 likes@KOBKED -X,i've seen them 5 times near Venice(Italy),best gigs of my life.Cheers!
0 likes@David Kelemen No. The Florentine pogen or the Peaches en Regalia are not.
1 likeno way. zappa couldnt dumb it down for an oh no bruno or two lipstwo lungs...and the tower is more pounding e chord than anything. no way these guys were into that. try a band like aframes who relied on a thunderous rhythm section. it isnt proggy because they can play, some of the best rhythm sections belonged to punk bands. you wont find better drummers than brian betzger or the original circle jerks short lived bass-drummer. even the Cures original bassist was nuts.
0 likes@Dave Anchovies Two Lips Two Lungs beautifully, achingly and economically explores human beings imploding due to communcation failure.
0 likesIt's Catching Up just might be the finest opening track ever. <3 Certainly the finest opening of any punk album.
10 likesMasterpiece is correct. A masterpiece of rock, no matter which way you slice it.
28 likesI just realized how a real music sounds like. it's my first time hearing this but it already became one of my top 10 best albums.

1 likeI remember seeing them on this tour maybe 1988 in Olympia Wa. at the Reko Muse. I was blown away. life changer for sure
6 likesGreatest band from Canada ever live !! Imagine seeing them with 2 drummers on stage rocking this brilliance out . I was lucky enough to do that and slam dance to this .
1 likeThis album was like a gospel of my teenage years...i was 15 when it came out, and i used to listen to it with my friends repeatedly after high school, every day for a year or two....30 years later i still know it by heart. This mastrpiece is something else...beyond comparison, out of time, one of a kind.
6 likesLyrics of all the songs of the album:
6 likesIt's Catching Up
The dead walk...
Do you hear that sound?
Do you hear that sound?
Like fingers scratching underground
Do you hear that sound?
That slamming door?
I've fought it all my life
But I can't fight it anymore
It's catching up, I'm fucked
A dead duck, shit out of luck
How do you hide from
Something you have found?
Do you hear that sound?
That scratching sound?
Is it better to be lost or found?
You can't ignore it
You can't talk it away
You can't drink it away
You can't fuck it away
It's catching up, I'm fucked
A dead duck, shit out of luck
Give me aslylum, let me in
I am mad, you are my only witness
There are some things that never die
Things that never really were alive
I've shut them out
I've slammed the door
But I can't keep them back
Anymore
It's catching up, I'm fucked
A dead duck, shit out of luck
The Tower
The sword of truth is just another weapon
Let me live for just one more second
I see a woman, she's holding flowers
A bouquet of roses that are blood red
From a burning building, a man leaps to his death
I stand above these mansions of the dead
Red tombs and above us looms
The tower
I see red
I see a tower against the sky
Beneath a red unblinking eye
Radiowaves curve and cross
I stand below them - lost!
Above me is a black obelisk
And the dangers that I risk
Here gather the ghosts of the mind
That tear my heart and here I find
All the traps that have been set
Everything I would forget, beneath
The tower
I see red
I see a tower against the sky
Beneath a red unblinking eye
Violence is close at hand
You are damned if you do
And if you don't - damned!
A red eye, tyrant full of hate
Glares from the sky, it's captive state
If it should blink or deviate
A thousand worlds would obliterate
I do not move, nor do I speak
Beneath that hard and pitiless peak
Of concrete, steel and antennae wheels
The tower
I see red
I see a tower against the sky
Beneath a red unblinking eye
Tired Of Waiting
I got tired, tired, tired of waiting
Tired of waiting, waiting for news
Tired of waiting for things to improve
Tired of waiting, waiting for your letter
Tired of waiting for things to get better
I got tired, tired, tired of waiting
Tired of waiting, waiting by the phone
Tired of waiting here all alone
Tired of waiting for something new
Tired of waiting for you
I got tired, tired, tired of waiting
I got tired of waiting, waiting in line
Tired of waiting for my clothes to dry
Tired of waiting for this show to begin
I got tired of waiting for my ship to come in
Tired of waiting, waiting for the bus
Tired of waiting for my shoes to get fixed
Tired of waiting, waiting for my cheque
Tired of waiting for a change in the weather
Tired of waiting for the water to boil
Tired of waiting for the paint to dry
Tired of waiting, waiting for a sign
Tired of waiting for my big break
Tired of waiting for the dam to break
Tired of waiting for the bombs to drop
Tired of waiting and waiting and waiting
I got tired of waiting for the end
I got tired of waiting because I found out
There's only a fine line between
Biding one's time and wasting one's site
Do you know what I mean?
I got tired of waiting that's all
Stocktaking
Are you getting what you want?
And are you getting what you need?
I've heard it said that love is truly sacred
But nowhere is it written that it's guaranteed
Who decides what will happen?
And who decides who for?
Is this just a crazy little game?
Or is this just an ugly little war?
Are you sick and tired of the same old things?
Or are you happy enough?
When does so much become so little?
When does too little become too much?
When does so much become so little?
When does too little become too much?
The End Of All Things
You are here
I am here
Fear
Bound in fear
We are here
I see here
Nothing
All is clear
Crystal clear
Fear
All that's here
Pain and fear
I see here
Nothing
Hear the angels sing
This is the end of all things
All is clear
Nothing's here
Fear
What is fear?
Nothing's here
I see here
Nothing
Hear the angels sing
This is the end of all things
Big Dick
Like a monkey in a zoo,
You're half gorilla too
When you pound it with your fist
And make it real stiff
Big Dick
Gotta cover your mistakes
Your bloody out-takes
So you dip it in the wine
And make a holy sign
Big Dick
Big Dick! Come quick
Big Dick! Come quick
Well, you're running up a tree
You're trying not to scream
Then you're pounding on your chest
Like you whipped the best
Big Dick
The rivers of the blood
You've spilled have turned to mud
Now the flies are buzzin' round
Don't they make a loud sound
Big Dick
Big Dick! Come quick
Big Dick! Come quick
It won't be long
Till those bad bits are gone
It won't be long till those bad bits are gone
Now we're sitting by the fire but Daddy's getting tired
'Cause he drank the whole crock
Now he's got a limp cock
Big Dick
Big Dick! Come quick
Big Dick! Come quick
Two Lips, Two Lungs And One Tongue
He kept trying
He kept trying
But he couldn't find out
Why he couldn't stop crying
Only so many songs can be sung
With two lips, two lungs and one tongue
She kept praying
She kept praying
That she would understand
What she was saying
Only so many songs can be sung
With two lips, two lungs and one tongue
He kept dreaming
He kept dreaming
Of the day they'd realize
What he was feeling
Only so many songs can be sung
With two lips, two lungs and one tongue
Rags And Bones
Well, Christ was married on the cross
My father was married to my mother
And I am married to a cigarette butt lying in the gutter
And I am married to a cigarette butt lying in the gutter
Oh, that's too bad, isn't it
Rags and bones, are we finally alone?
White Man, you, you just starting to get the blues
I said, White Man, you, you just starting to get the blues
The blues
Rags and bones, are we finally alone?
The beast has arisen, all sins are forgiven
The beast has arisen, all sins are forgiven
In the belly of the beast I shall be released
In the belly of the beast I shall be released
She rises, Captain! She rises, Captain!
Captain---dive, dive! Captain---dive, dive!
If I could choose to believe or not to believe
You know I would choose not to
If I could choose to believe or not to believe
You know I would choose not to
But I can't choose
Not to
Rags and bones, are we finally alone?
Any old rags and bones?
Who would have thought that I would be
A sailor on the deep blue sea
Any old rags and bones?
Oh No! Bruno!
Too much, stay out all night
Too much, but that's alright
Too much, do it do it
Too much, now do it again
Too much, play for stienes
Too much, play for cash
Too much, put up or shut up
Too much is not enough
Oh no! Bruno!
Too much is not enough
Too much, hit hat e nightclubs
Too much, drink champaign
Too much, double bullseye
Too much, do that again
Too much, stay out all night
Too much, but that's alright
Too much, such a big guy
Too much is not enough
Oh no! Bruno!
Too much is not enough
Too much, no escaping
Too much, you've been framed
Too much, the cops are knocking
Too much, no not again!
Oh no! Bruno!
Too much is not enough
Ten... twenty for two... thirty for six
You son of a bitch! Go!
Oh no! Bruno!
Too much, too much, too much, too much
All Lies
Lies are the words that I use
When you look up hopefully
All of the things that we feel
Are a trick, a fantasy
What is the end?
It is love I pretend
It's calling, it's calling
And I'm falling, I'm falling
And she said, pray to me, pray to me
All the love you see, it comes from me
She said, pray to me, pray to me
All the love you see, it belongs to me
She said, I see, I see
She said, pray to me, pray to me---but it was
All lies, a pack of lies
It was all lies, why don't you fuck off and die
It was all lies, a pack of liesIt was all lies, all lies
Lies are the light and the hope
In your eyes as they shine on me
Tie up my hands with your chains
They are bound to set me free
I'm singing, I'm singing
And to that I'm clinging
The words that I say only drag me away
And I said, pray to me, pray to me
All the love you see, it comes from me
I said, pray to me, pray to me
All the love you see, it belongs to me
I said, I see, I seeI said, pray to me, pray to me---but it was
All lies . . .
Lies are the hopes and the chains that have dragged me here to you
All of these hopes and these chains I will gladly share with you
It's raining, it's pouring
The old man is snoring
It's raining, it's pouring
And I'm falling, I'm falling
And he said, pray to me, pray to me
All the love you see, it comes from me
He said, pray to me, pray to me
All the love you see, it belongs to me
He said, I see, I see
He said, pray to me, pray to me---but it was
All lies...

Foolish girl in swelling woman
Here's a blunt knife for your bosom
Here's the devil's hand to shake
Watch what the other tries to take
Hell
Life in Hell
By your loving disposition
You let him get into position
And train his rising gun upon
The cervix of your inner sun
Hell
Life in Hell
Can you not distinguish pain?
Red nail and red shame
Woman, world in one complete
Your heart's awake, your mind's asleep
You spread your inner sun to make
A den for some sly, basking snake
Which burns stronger?
I can't tell
The gowing sun?
Or fiery Hell?
Hell
Life in Hell
Am I Wrong
Am I wrong for thinking out the box from where I stay?
Am I wrong for saying that I'll choose another way?
I ain't trying to do what everybody else doing
Just cause everybody doing what they all do
If one thing I know, how far would I grow?
I'm walking down this road of mine, this road that I call home
So am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real?
Now am I wrong for trying to reach the things that I can't see?
But that's just how I feel, that's just how I feel
That's just how I feel trying to reach the things that I can't see
Am I tripping for having a vision?
My prediction, I'mma be on the top of the world
Hope you, hope you don't look back, always do what you decide
Don't let them control your life, that's just how I feel
Fight for yours and don't let go, don't let them compare you, no
Don't worry, you're not alone, that's just how we feel
So am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real?
Now am I wrong for trying to reach the things that I can't see?
But that's just how I feel, that's just how I feel
That's just how I feel trying to reach the things that I can't see
If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong
I don't wanna be right, right
If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong
I don't wanna be right
So am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real?
Now am I wrong for trying to reach the things that I can't see?
But that's just how I feel, that's just how I feel
That's just how I feel trying to reach the things that I can't see.

2 likesi saw them first as a two piece opening for doa back in like 84 and have seen them countless times since....believe it or not this record doesn't do them justice.
15 likesHow tf have I never heard of them, actually the most underrated band I've ever listend to.
2 likesAmazingly talented band.
1 likeFantastic album for sure - but my highlight is the first bonus track (while the second one is a real spoiler). Just voice and bass but what a raw intensity, lyrics that really dig deep. Much better than their later recording of State of Grace.
1 likeThis makes me feel both very young and very old at the same time.
16 likesbest punk album ever made
13 likesI saw these guys in 1986 open up for Husker Du at the University of Washington. Believe it or not, as great as both those bands are, THE U-MEN blew them both off the stage.

2 likesNever heard this w/bonus tracks. Truly a masterpiece...the drums just don't let up, ever. Seen them live twice, the last time in 98? or '99 at Emo's in Austin, TX...I was so psyched I threw up in the sink in their bathroom. Now THAT'S music!!!
1 likeOne of the most amazing 3 piece bands of all-time.
4 likesSounds great. I used to listen to "Two Lips, Two Lungs and One Tongue" over and over when i was a kid.
0 likesThis is a great album.
1 likeSaw these guys in a rinky dink venue in Poiiers, France in the early 90's. They were actually pretty upbeat and fun.
2 likesWhen I first got this album, my brother and I were cribbage addicts. We're talking 10-15 games per day — more if we were drinking. So my first day having this album, I had it playing on a boombox in the background while we had a match. When it got to the score calling at the end of "Oh No! Bruno!", our heads exploded. A goddamn punk song about cribbage. Fantastic.
1 likeI just discovered this by accident and it's blowing my mind! I'm on the last song and I've sat here and listened to the whole thing straight through. I can't believe this album got past me all these years. My God! This is incredible! I haven't been this excited about discovering a band in years. Wow! just wow.

2 likesFirst CD I ever bought....right at the concert!
1 likeBest punk record ever made. Perfect in all aspects.
1 likeI discovered NMN with this record in 1989.

9:42-9:48!!! I have no words to accurately describe this band & album, arguably the best & most talented/creative/intelligent in punk rock. "Punk rock" doesn't even really fit, or do them justice. As if justice is needed. Wow, I'm in shock.

0 likesI LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONE OF THE GREATS MY FELLOW CANADIANS
2 likesClassic album... definitely brings me back.

1 likethe technical aspect of things.
8 likesNomeansNo had their days, not really popular but not underground either ... now that you´re comparing it to Voivod and looking back at the mid/late 80s when I was into both bands , both had solid fanbases, they just weren´t any Metallica but they sure weren´t too underground either .
2 likesBoth on the edge , neither ever broke up into the Soundgarden, Sonic youth mainstream type of audiences .
Don't forget the Devo influence. John I am pretty sure said so :)
1 likethe bassist sounds extremely similar to the one from dead Kennedys. its just fast and insane. i love it

Same! Well, I grew up in northern alberta, so I got a hold of Voivod a little earlier. When I moved to Calgary, the first cool cats I met (they were also big into Voivod) showed me Nmeansno. I was blown away. still am.
6 likes@Genre Slur I did not notice how similar both bands are until a year later (1991) I played Nomeansno to a couple metal/grunge guys and they mentioned Voivod sounding similar. They said NMN were the punk version of Voivod. I got into both these bands at around the same time (a couple months maybe) and did not notice. Duh.
9 likesVoivod is from the gods. Listening to them in the early 80's was as good as taking acid. So far ahead of the game.
14 likesTotally agree, two bands with my favourite bass players.
2 likesgaziltapig Voivod was shockingly a very punky band. Legit took cues from Die Kreuzen, Sonic Youth, Killing Joke, and probably this band aswell.
3 likesThePaperPrince - I like all the bands you mentioned here, I highly, highly doubt that they
0 likeswere influenced by any of them though.
Reg Rock I mean I know they took their dissonance from Die Kreuzen and in an interview somewhere they admitted to ripping them off I believe.
2 likesThePaperPrince -cool, I never knew that. I’ve talked to Rob a couple times, his influences that I know of are kind of surprising, but not entirely. He’s one of MY personal influences, not only artistically, but sonically and gearwise.
1 likeI saw them on this tour in DC with The Ex opening. As tight as this album sounds, they were tighter live.

0 likesThis is like a perfect mix of Minutemen and Dead Kennedys.
41 likesGod forgive me, I haven't listened to this album in years & it is so damned good. I had been to busy listening to all their other stuff as this was always their most accessible album for the non NMN fan, a pioneer album in what we then called the pop punk world but just a little better (musically) than most.
0 likesAlso one of the best live bands I ever saw on each tour that I saw (Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Whistler. People say they broke up but really they retired and deserve the rest after kicking ass from 1979 -2013. (I know they announced the quit in 2016 but that's because they took their time, last time I know that they played was 2013, not including the Vancouver music hall of fame ceremony)
I must listen to this more often. I still know every note on this record though...thanks poster!!

0 likesPunk evolved... Did it evolve more after this? Brutal, furious, disturbing, sophisticated, well played and real.. NomeansNo. NOW WHERE CAN I GET A MASK LIKE THIS???
30 likesReplies (3)
Alex Zith punk evolved far past this album. In fact, for experimental punk this album was pretty grounded in punk's sound. It's recognizable as hardcore. Try out the Cardiacs - Sing to God, the Blood Brothers - ... Burn Piano Island, Burn!, if you want post/art punk that came out after this and stuff before this that's good are the Fall, This Heat, No Trend, DNA, Foetus, Wire, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, James Chance and the Contortions, I could probably go on for hours with examples.
5 likesAlex Zith of course not all of those bands go as hard as NoMeansNo DO, but they all carry that same vein of progression past punk's boundaries. Post Punk in its purest form.
5 likes@Enzo Almada or just Art made by talented artists who have a lot of truth to tell...

0 likesMy FAVE album of ALL TIME
0 likesGot to see them live 3 times, the first was when Wrong came out.
0 likesThey had a concert tour towards small clubs in Belgium in the 90's. I saw them 5 or more times, that was cool. Drunk some beer with the band. Different times... :D

0 likesReplies (1)
0 likesYou ought to check out their alter-ego band, The Hanson Brothers. It's more of punk-rock parody poking fun at the Canadian hockey fan stereotype. Good shit.
superlative album!
0 likesWow, those are some drum chops.
1 likeFor over 30 years these geniuses have simply shat out the bad and boring constraints found in both prog and hardcore. For those about to rock, we salute NOMEANSNO.
0 likesThis album is the cure for Covid 19
4 likesI Love It
0 likesActually from what I can gather this album was first released with only 11 tracks, "Life in Hell" and "I Am Wrong" were added on one of the earlier rereleases. With this newest remaster they also added tracks 14 and 15. So there are either 2 or 4, depending on which version of the original album you are comparing the remaster to.

Rob Wright is the most underrated bass player , and Nomeansno is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Their musicianship is second to none!

1 likeStill great
0 likesSo I've managed to totally ignore this band for 30 odd years, remember the name but never gave it a spin.

What have you been listening to that gave you that impression? I could probably point you in the direction of some more technical punk/punk-inspired music
10 likes@Rectangularification I'd like to hear the names of some bands to which you are referring?
0 likes@***** Minutemen. Fugazi
5 likes@*****
2 likesFaraquet. Barkmarket. Unwound.
big black.
6 likes@ToadHonda Snapper You must be referring to pop punk.
2 likes@Liam Keane
3 likesMainstream punk... which is hardly punk.. otherwise known as pop punk. Like umm... idk.. someone name a few... james brown?! or Blink 187!
why dont they just call it rock???
0 likes@Liam Keane
3 likesBecause it aint rock and roll .. in my opinion. It aint punk either.. hence poppy punk poop... or pop punk.. its a derogatory term.. its not like people aim to be pop punk... well at least I hope they dont! lol
I guess punk became a cool thing among teens? idk but i guess theyre just looking for a reason to say that they like some sort of "punk"
0 likes@Liam Keane
0 likesYou wouldnt believe the people who call themselves punk today! Its ridiculous! Moreover, its funny how todays punk scene is infiltrated by liberal politics! If a band hates george bush, a pack of kids hates george bush. Why not hate bush and clinton! They cannot think for themselves, which is what being punk is all about!
@6laderunner what about Bad Brains? (by the way, best album ever released, along with Hunky Dory by David Bowie)
0 likesyea, they were great
0 likes@6laderunner Idk I always dismissed Bad Brains because it sounded like standardized punk... but do they use their jazz training and incorporate it into their music? Is there a good example of this? NMN has more of an avant garde touch to it.. which is what made me like the band... havent heard all their stuff but this album has some good songs because of the way they compose their music... im aware the above was a loose and crappy attempt at saying what I mean.
0 likesI dont know guys....checked out Bad Brains - ok. Big Black - ok, barkmarket - ok, but nothing like these guys - they have that avant garde sort of touch with punk... its fuckin awesome! Gotta check out the rest you guys posted...
0 likes@bishop101010
1 likeGotta say.... Fugazi is pretty fuckin cool...gotta hear the rest of their stuff... I like how they structure their music at times...
@bishop101010
1 likeIts a little softcore tho...the first track on 13 songs was ok... but then the tracks started getting a little... not punk. recommend an album? Their music is good but... idk... a little softcore...
I wish there were something like Strife mixed with No Means No mixed with Primus then Buckethead!
0 likesall Fugazi is good. The Argument or In On The Kill Taker are good places to start.
0 likes@***** Shellac and The Jesus Lizard are great
2 likesVictims Family
1 like@bishop101010
0 likesDude! Victims Family is pretty fuckin bad ass!!
@***** Die Kreuzen, Ramones, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, actually Ramones have simple guitar but if you watch he plays most of the time only on the down stroke....simple but far from lazy.
1 like@6laderunner -
0 likesI don't know if Greg Ginn was necessarily jazz trained, but I know he grew up next to a jazz club and he said it influenced him.
2 likes@Pabs Correa Passion and feeling have always begun with learning scales... since the classical music era- they didnt just rub a bow across the strings and then said to themselves - who cares what paganini did - mine still sounds great from a subjective standpoint... subjectivity in music is ridiculous - thats why we have madonna - taylor swift - jay z- insert endless list here
1 like@***** i agree with knowledge can also be passion.
1 like@Pabs Correa
0 likesPeople who feel like music has no standard and so long as it sounds good to them - it is good, such people like the aforementioned - they will defend their music by saying its my music and it sounds good... but there should be a standard in all music...
@Pabs Correa
0 likesSrry, wasnt clear.. those are the "illuminati puppets" I refer to whom justify their crappy music - mainstream music often has no standards and is subjective - like the puppets if you want to call them that
@Greg Pasquier Growing up next to a music club must be how Greg Ginn learned to rip off bands!
0 likes@***** How about Buzzcocks ? Pop Punk ?
0 likes@***** Fugazi - End hits - Red Medicine
0 likes+StaySkeptic thats why i like Television, all the complexity of art rock but the rawness of punk in the playing. kind of why i can't stand solo albums by world-renowned shredders that just have clinical session musicians behind them lol
0 likesExplore post punk some more, you're in part correct but also a bit wrong.
3 likesPunk is always about rhythm so lead guitar usually takes the back seat
0 likespunk is a way not a sound
1 like@Naneaux PeeBrane it is however Epic beyond most peoples ability to comprehend.
0 likesMy favourite band hands down is Stiff Little Fingers, may not be proper punk but they have such energy and rhythm.
0 likes@Rectangularification well my knowledge of music has grown considerably since five years ago. lol. I believe in my 16 year old brain I was referring to bands like Green Day and Offspring which are terrible of punk examples. I have tried older punk and it's not for me. NoMeansNo is by far my favorite punk band still though.
0 likes@MaxiMachine (Mishka) That's exactly what I was referring to when I was sixteen when I posted that lol
0 likesI just have to say, when I posted this comment five years ago...my God I am getting old, I was a stupid 16 year old.

0 likesTHANK YOU!
0 likesThese guys should be getting royalties off of other bands who essentially ripped off their sound to become famous. Damn flapjack asshats.
2 likesWere these guys an influence on Primus?
8 likesReplies (19)
I believe Nomeansno made Primus out of play-do.
25 likes@Charles Chalmers Who would you say is better?
1 likeI love both and I think they are two completely different things.
0 likesBut who listens to weezer so do not expect an objective analysis.
@koi oik Whats wrong with Weezer?
6 likes@Brian Rickert I like nomeansno more, but then, I also listened to them more, saw them live a couple times, and they are my hometeam.
3 likesI don't see the comparison, other than both bands have the bass right up front (and rightfully so) in the mix.
16 likesBut the styles are too disparate: Claypool prefers 5 and 6-string bass, and plucks, strums, and slaps.

0 likesI like both Primus and nomeansno, saw Primus live about 2 years ago. Great experience.
0 likesI think primus is more influenced by rush.. but who knows ;)
2 likesPrimus=1984 and NMN=1979
5 likes@gregory cantin It´s both very hard in a similar way and nevermind where they are influenced by! i lovem all ;)
0 likesMaybe, but I don't think directly. However the first no means no song I ever heard had me exclaim "this sounds like Primus" seconds into the song. I dont recall which song it was. I do know it was on one of their later releases.
0 likesBoth good bands! With Solid bass line! = )
0 likes@Brian Rickert I think this album is more consistent than anything Primus has done.
1 like@Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub I think this album is amazing about as amazing as frizzle fry, both have that crunchy hard hitting bass and drums
1 likeCharles Chalmers Ha ha ha!
0 likesDean Du Pont I do believe though that they are are both SF Bay area bands. I'd be astounded if both didn't borrow little bits here and there as they must have been aware of each other and their stuff is too cool to not be inspired by each other for somebody to not want to know "how the fuck did he do THAT? Gotta figure it out".
0 likesI appreciate your diplomacy, but I'll be less than diplomatic--Nomeansno is better--much better. I also saw each of them live exactly once, and NMN was phenomenal, while Primus was...actually prettty boring live. I do rather like the "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" album, though, but not nearly as much as several of the NMN albums. To each their own, though.

2 likesYes, but it wasn't their first output and also...you talking about social hardcore punk or SoCal (Southern Californian) as I'm pretty sure was meant with the original post I commented on. Fact remains that this band predated most of even the majority of the "original" hardcore bands and therefore most likely did the influencing rather then the other way around. 0 likesI don't understand the hate on Jello Biafra.
2 likesAlso this album is fucking brilliant.

0 likesHell yeah. Cheers mate, have a good one.

2 likesHow is Bad Brains superior or even comparable?
3 likesKinda hard to box up, bad brains, yeah?
1 like@Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub They're not comparable. To each his own and yada yada, but even I have my limits

shadow knight360 how do you find their music? I can’t even seem to find any information on them.

Come back to it in a year or so and you might change your mind, it worked for me. I didn’t like it too much at first but now it’s my favorite album of all time.
