A tip if you are going to make a dual boot with BCD: Use the legacy boot menu, that way you don't need to wait for windows 11 to boot before booting to other systems. I don't know the command for that as I use EasyBCD.

@@zapzap7458 my windows 98 rig from 1999 had 32mb graphics card and could play vice city. 4mb is fine but why go that low if you don’t have to. It’s not really how fast the card is but what era it’s from and if it has compatible drivers for 98 that aren’t slow or buggy.
In my opinion you shouldnt go over pentium 4 when installing windows 98. Also you shouldnt install any new hardware, especially fast graphics cards. Just some pci 4mb card. And don't install any directx. Not even 7.0. There you go - glitchless windows 98
One of my favorite little tricks with modern Windows bootloader is that you can go into "advanced startp options" and reboot into the older OS from there in order to avoid that second reboot :)

Theoretically possible, but not fully. Someone actually tried doing this once, but they only went down to 95. Why? Because the compatibility was toooooooooooooo fucking high for versions lower than 95.

However, my knowledge can be wrong since I haven't tested yet. Edit: Windows 11 require 312MB to just create RAM Disk (used to use the (part of) hard drive as temporary storage. However, just 512mb can run Windows 10 with start menu and taskbar works. 1GB is the minimum you could go for just simple tasks.
Well let's be honest, the Windows 9x (95, 98) product line was pretty unstable by default. I remember my Windows 95 getting bluescreened even 3 times a day.

I hated how 98 wanted a reboot for everything, that was the thing that got me to upgrade to XP initially back in the day :) Sounds silly now, but when you had a CompaQ PC with 366mhz Celeron and 64 megs of ran with Quantum fireball HDD each reboot was a coffee brake :D
@@SKCro. Even if you "bypass" the limits, 1 GB of RAM won't be enough. Idk about Win itself but you won't be able to launch any app with that amount of RAM.
This is interesting also apparently the installer limits windows 11 currently not the OS so using shift+f11 and dism should work, hoping that mess is solved by release otherwise they'll be leaving it again to third-party users to plug the holes.

The question is, will windows 11 update and modify your boot files, leaving you no way to get back to windows 98? Windows 10 does that to linux pretty commonly.
Windows 10/11 only does that if you follow the Linux advice on how to use grub, if you use the Microsoft boot menu you never hit that problem, strangely using the Microsoft menu is supported by Microsoft & doesn't get stomped, plenty of tutorials how to do it if you google them. Just ignore the nay-sayers on the Linux forums. To answer your question, no the 98 entry won't get stomped on by updates either.
Windows XP and Windows 7 are pretty good. Windows Vista is kind of nice looking too. If you're talking about the logo, then yeah, I definitely agree. Windows 98's logo is simply amazing.
IMO, Win7 with it's aero theme is very gorgeous, and still modern. If only modern hardware were to support it, I'd definitely use Win7. (Even ignoring Linux, which I absolutely love)

Absolutely great job with this. I now have a dual booting, Win98SE and Win11 HP Probook 6570b (4GB RAM), which is absolutely too new for Win98 and absolutely too old for Win11. I had to do things slightly differently in the Win98 install: When I get to the change to C: drive and run \win98\install -- I get: "Unable to control A20 line- XMS driver not installed." -- This is because old Himem.sys doesn't work on modern architecture. So... -- I used a SATA-to-USB adapter which allowed me to flash the HDD with FreeDOS using Rufus ( Because FreeDOS has a competent embedded XMS driver). Then copied the win98 folder from the CDROM to the HDD. Then I installed the HDD to the laptop -- was able to boot from it and install win98SE. Other methods failed me -- creating a flash drive and booting from it always resulted in the flash drive being C: (big no-go) -- or -- the setup.exe of WIN98 would just not run the win98 setup (varied excuses) when executed -- or some other fail. Thanks much....
going into startup settings isnt spamming f8 now, hold shift then press restart, go to repair, troubleshoot, show more options, startup options, hit restart and finally you can choose how u wanna boot.

The win11 installer appears to have detected the 98 install and offered the ability to upgrade it! It even refers to it as "A supported version of windows". I wonder if that feature actually works, it's likely gone untested since the xp/vista/7 era.
This Upgrade Button does not function regardless of function. It has been in windows since vista but only worked on XP when running the vista installer on XP (or in the case of 7, vista) and was grayed out when in WinPE. However, Windows 8 got its shiny new installer when running from within an existing install, but the WinPE one was never changed (well beyond some colour and branding changes). This upgrade option remained and was quietly ungrayed out by microsoft adding to confusion.
Windows XP, Vista and 7 has a classic theme which is look like Windows 95, 98 and ME. On Windows 8, classic theme was removed and Aero was replaced with Metro.

First try Windows 95 to 10, then 3.1, then 1.0/2.0. Make sure you have at least Pentium 4 or newer, 1GB or RAM or higher, and a 256GB storage or higher. (I guess?)
If you're encountering Windows 11 performance issues on the laptop, disable HVCI and VBS because your laptop's processor doesn't have MBEC. (mine still lags even though it has.)

1. I keep my task bar in the middle. It's not an insult to windows fop (whatever that means) and it's useful for ultra wide displays. 2. The set up process is literally the antithesis of stale. They completely overhauled it with fancy animations and asthetically pleasing visuals that I think were long overdue. As someone who hates Microsoft and windows 10, I greatly enjoyed windows 11 and it's UI overhaul finally making the OS usable and pleasing to the eye. Snazzy labs does a good explanation on this.

could use a headless linux install running virtualbox/vmware with the extensions and set it up to run an x-server on boot without a gui that will automatically boot into a windows 98se vm whenever the computer starts up with a shell script. potentially, you could have working gpu acceleration with sound drivers and network drivers and automatically mount usb devices, thumb drives etc.
I do have a Dell Precision M6400 laptop PC that I was able to set up as dualboot Windows 10 and Windows Vista. I know that the Dell Precision m6400 laptop is the best laptop for late 2008 to early 2009.

Your BIOS was the most helpful, I have a HP laptop and it doesn't have any advanced settings only boot options, Virtualization, TPM settings and just a fan always on switch which doesn't do anything
Windows 11 requirement are completely useless , its just the same as Windows 10, I installed it easily on my Pentium G640 computer from 2012 and an AMD athlon 64 notebook with only 2 GB of ram from 2007 (Also I ended up to install Linux Mint 20 and Windows 7 on both of these because Win 10/11 lagged too much After a week)
why do all that when you can use VM. When you disk install or usb install, you must make sure your BIOS is unlocked, meaning, you can't do this on a normal machine.

No sound nor network? That's no Win 9x multimedia PC! Still impressive it actually boots on such a "recent" model, makes me wonder if sound, network (and a vintage PCI-E GPU) would works in a i5 Desktop if the motherboard has PCI slots (it does on my LGA 775 system with an unsupported P35 chipset).

You're absolutely right using emulation is the less painful and more effective way to go in many scenarios :) And yeah 256 MiB is probably already overkill but based on my notes, I didn't encounter any issues with 512 MiB during installation or use (over that you have to set the MaxFileCache and/or apply other fixes).
If you want to run actual Windows 9x software, then run it in a VM. You will get much better performance. Give it one CPU thread (Windows 98 doesn't know how to use more than that), and 256MB of RAM (I think you can go a little bit higher than that without problems but 256MB is more than sufficient).
It's actually pretty easy, use Rufus to make a Extended Windows 11 USB that skips UEFI, CPU, and Secure Boot. I run 11 on fully unsupported hardware with no issues!
Win98SE doesnt seem to want to install my GTX1060 drivers!! I found out a strange solution. On my Win11 running PCem and simulating a Pentium III + Voodoo 3 3000.
I've tried to dual boot before, but for some reason I could never get i to work. I've installed 2 operating systems on a computer before, each one on its own partition, but I try to go to the OS selection screen and it just never shows both, and screws up the original OS to the point where I have to use system restore or startup repair.

You can't boot flash as if it were an OS but you might be able to make a special version of Windows that replaces the login/explorer with a flash runner and the swf file (and maybe change the boot animation as well)

Because games, especially DOS games which won't run under NT/2K, since compatibility with obsolete software is the only reason beyond just proving it can be done that you'd dual boot with a legacy unsupported OS to begin with.

lol you don't need a license key to use Windows 10, just click "I don't have a product key" during setup and Windows will work just fine (aside from a watermark)

If one wants to play older games, which only run on older windows versions because of lacking backwards compatibility, then one can just use a virtual box or somehow use the compatibility tool inside the windows property settings, or am I wrong?

I did a video about multibooting almost all the major versions of Windows before, including Windows 11 and Windows 98. However I didn't know I could just use PATCHMEM instead of limiting the available memory in system.ini so Windows 98 can have access to 4GB of memory
I want to dualboot Win10 and WinXP, but every tutorial I see will tell me to install XP before 10, despite the fact that 10 is already installed on my machine.
Just run the Windows 1.0 in D-Fend Reloaded or DOSBox. That way, it is possible to run DOS, Win 1.0, Win 1.0 Premiere Edition, Win 286, Win 386, Win 3.0, Win 3.1, and Win 3.11on my Win 11 computer without having to reboot. Newer versions of Windows run in virtual machines, again without having to reboot when I change the operating system. I used to dual/multi boot until I got too many operating systems, and didn't want to keep splitting the disks into smaller sections.
A tip if you are going to make a dual boot with BCD: Use the legacy boot menu, that way you don't need to wait for windows 11 to boot before booting to other systems. I don't know the command for that as I use EasyBCD.

Windows 10/11 only does that if you follow the Linux advice on how to use grub, if you use the Microsoft boot menu you never hit that problem, strangely using the Microsoft menu is supported by Microsoft & doesn't get stomped, plenty of tutorials how to do it if you google them. Just ignore the nay-sayers on the Linux forums. To answer your question, no the 98 entry won't get stomped on by updates either.

I had to do things slightly differently in the Win98 install: When I get to the change to C: drive and run \win98\install -- I get: "Unable to control A20 line- XMS driver not installed." -- This is because old Himem.sys doesn't work on modern architecture. 0 likes-- I used a SATA-to-USB adapter which allowed me to flash the HDD with FreeDOS using Rufus ( Because FreeDOS has a competent embedded XMS driver). Then copied the win98 folder from the CDROM to the HDD. Then I installed the HDD to the laptop -- was able to boot from it and install win98SE. Other methods failed me -- creating a flash drive and booting from it always resulted in the flash drive being C: (big no-go) -- or -- the setup.exe of WIN98 would just not run the win98 setup (varied excuses) when executed -- or some other fail. Thanks much....

0 likesThe win11 installer appears to have detected the 98 install and offered the ability to upgrade it! It even refers to it as "A supported version of windows". I wonder if that feature actually works, it's likely gone untested since the xp/vista/7 era.

This Upgrade Button does not function regardless of function. It has been in windows since vista but only worked on XP when running the vista installer on XP (or in the case of 7, vista) and was grayed out when in WinPE. However, Windows 8 got its shiny new installer when running from within an existing install, but the WinPE one was never changed (well beyond some colour and branding changes). This upgrade option remained and was quietly ungrayed out by microsoft adding to confusion.

0 likes2. The set up process is literally the antithesis of stale. They completely overhauled it with fancy animations and asthetically pleasing visuals that I think were long overdue.
As someone who hates Microsoft and windows 10, I greatly enjoyed windows 11 and it's UI overhaul finally making the OS usable and pleasing to the eye.
Snazzy labs does a good explanation on this.
While I don't approve of the hardware requirements. They weren't a problem for my oldish PC and my Ryzen 3 2300x or even my Ryzen 5 5600x so ..

could use a headless linux install running virtualbox/vmware with the extensions and set it up to run an x-server on boot without a gui that will automatically boot into a windows 98se vm whenever the computer starts up with a shell script. potentially, you could have working gpu acceleration with sound drivers and network drivers and automatically mount usb devices, thumb drives etc.

Windows 11 requirement are completely useless , its just the same as Windows 10, I installed it easily on my Pentium G640 computer from 2012 and an AMD athlon 64 notebook with only 2 GB of ram from 2007 (Also I ended up to install Linux Mint 20 and Windows 7 on both of these because Win 10/11 lagged too much After a week)

You're absolutely right using emulation is the less painful and more effective way to go in many scenarios :) And yeah 256 MiB is probably already overkill but based on my notes, I didn't encounter any issues with 512 MiB during installation or use (over that you have to set the MaxFileCache and/or apply other fixes).

It's actually pretty easy, use Rufus to make a Extended Windows 11 USB that skips UEFI, CPU, and Secure Boot. I run 11 on fully unsupported hardware with no issues!

Because games, especially DOS games which won't run under NT/2K, since compatibility with obsolete software is the only reason beyond just proving it can be done that you'd dual boot with a legacy unsupported OS to begin with.

@@c_sea1n Good Point. But I genually don't see a reason to Dualboot two windows systems. If one wants to play older games, which only run on older windows versions because of lacking backwards compatibility, then one can just use a virtual box or somehow use the compatibility tool inside the windows property settings, or am I wrong?

Just run the Windows 1.0 in D-Fend Reloaded or DOSBox. That way, it is possible to run DOS, Win 1.0, Win 1.0 Premiere Edition, Win 286, Win 386, Win 3.0, Win 3.1, and Win 3.11on my Win 11 computer without having to reboot. Newer versions of Windows run in virtual machines, again without having to reboot when I change the operating system. I used to dual/multi boot until I got too many operating systems, and didn't want to keep splitting the disks into smaller sections.
